Bought this to supplement 3 identical drives, each with more than 40,000 hours of run time. I've had mixed experience with WD in the past but the Red series seems good.
Dec 03, 2021 16:32These drives are rock solid. Popped them into my unRAID server with 24/7 uptime and haven't hit a failure yet, these are my go-to drives for any long-term storage build for clients.
The Packaging is hassle free as well.
Nov 09, 2021 17:26I had to replace some of my old NAS drives and it works great,
Nov 27, 2021 08:45It's the heart of a Network Storage device. Reliable, Performant, and Efficient.
Sep 30, 2021 14:25I purchased 6 of these for a NAS system. They work great and are perfect for what I needed.
Aug 20, 2021 02:45Great, quite and fast, comes in nice retail box not oem.
Aug 25, 2021 10:06low noise and low temperature.
6TB for the data storage is awesome.
Aug 13, 2021 16:36Bought two of these for a Raid 1 setup to store my photos. Setup was quick and easy and no issues so far.
Mar 05, 2021 16:06Only at Best BuyEnjoy high-capacity storage while on the go with this Western Digital 5TB easystore portable drive. This Western Digital 5TB easystore portable drive features an easy-to-use auto backup software that manages drive settings conveniently.
Great device so far. Connected to daughters PS5 off recommendation from friend that used the same HD for his PS5 with no issues. Great for storing and playing ps4 games on PS5. Formats quick, runs quick. Only thing i dont like, but its not a big deal, is power light is small and on the back so its hard to see when i want to check to see if its powered on.
Apr 27, 2021 10:49Was running out of room on my PS4 Pro and wanted to expand the memory so I can store more games. Looked at several external drives and decided on this one. WD has a great reputation, and this particular model was on sale. Easy set up. Quiet while running. Been several months and have had no issues. Got my boyfriend the same one a few weeks later to expand his storage and he loves it. Highly recommend!!
Jul 24, 2020 15:32Easy just plug in and format. I use this for my iPad Pro 12.9 for extra storage. Had to buy adapter cable (usb-micro b to usb-c) then used a mac to format and ipad recognized it no problem.
Jun 01, 2021 09:02I use this external drive for my Xbox One X. It's perfect. No issues. I have another external WD and thought I'd continue with the brand. So far I don't regret this purchase. I'm going to purchase again for my external laptop.
It's quiet. My other old WD is big and I am not able to travel with it. This is just the right size to slip into a pocket.
Dec 16, 2019 06:32Well, it’s a hard drive so unless something gets corrupted it seems to be working great. It’s very small and yet it’s 5 TB. I purchased it on Black Friday so instead of being $169 it was $89 which I was very excited about.
Dec 27, 2019 16:53Directions were very straight forward almost self-explanatory.
I had no problems plugging into a USB Hub.
It started right up and I had 5TB ready to go.
I liked it so much I got a second one a few days later.
Jul 09, 2021 19:03When it was working, for the month it was working, it was working. The cord was secure and didn't easily disconnect unlike some other external drives I've had. But after awhile it became harder for my computer(Macbook pro) to register. I also tried plugging it into my windows computer and no luck either. The light would come on and the disk would spin but western digital would say there was no usb attached, while WD drive utility would read it but there would be no volumes found on the drive despite having 1.5TB of info placed on the drive and attempting to run test on the drive failed. I'd say you're better off going for one of the bulkier drives that aren't portable. For those drives you'd be able to take them out of their casing a pop them in an external drive reader at least, this one you're kind of completely out of luck. I ordered it June 24nd and yesterday on July 21st it stopped being able to be read. It seems to already be bricked.
Jul 22, 2021 05:22This HD works well. Have not had any problems with it so far. I recommend buying it.
Nov 10, 2021 18:26Find a reliable storage solution for large files with this WD easystore external desktop hard drive. The USB 3.0 interface and backward-compatibility with USB 2.0 offer broad connectivity, while the automatic backup solution reduces the risk of data loss. This WD easystore external desktop hard drive features a 8TB capacity to provide ample space for videos and photos.
I bought a few of these 8TB externals. It's common knowledge now that these externals have 8TB Western Digital Red drives inside of them. It's the reason why I went with Western Digital, and specifically not Seagate (with their shingle technology). They are very easy to "shuck," allowing you to run them internally using SATA. However, the reason for the 4-star rating is that most consumers will not shuck them, and they do run hot inside of their casing. Temperatures exceed 45c at idle, and do reach 50c with use. Given they are WD Red drives, I'm confident they will survive those temperatures within the warranty period (2 years), but it's been tested and proven that hard drives do not do so well in terms of longevity with temperatures in excess of 40c. If you do shuck them, they run very cool; and you don't even have to install them internally. Just popping off the outer casing, and running a small fan on top keeps temperatures within 32-36c. I personally have 140mm fans blowing on top of mine still running on USB. My internal 8TB actually runs hotter due to less ventilation in my computer. Just keep in mind that if you shuck them and break the case, it will void the warranty. So outweigh the pros and cons before, and do your research on "proper shucking" :) Overall very satisfied with these 8TB Red NAS 256MB Cache drives.
Aug 19, 2017 22:18I usually don't like writing reviews cos there are always pseudo techies somewhere telling people what to do and what to do. Funny enough, 90 percent of them leave reviews that either ruin a product's rating or ruin other people takes or experiences with them. Fortunately, I'm a high IT Systems Admin with a dozen of years experience under my belt, so I move through these chuff deemed helpful reviews.
I bought 8 of these drive for my FreeNAS build and they have been perfect so far. Shucking them was very easy and I can honestly say the cases or enclosures are all perfectly intact with not even a single scratch on them. All I used was a simple flat head screw driver, some patience and a sprinkle of common sense. There's no need to force these puppies open. Took less than a minute to open each enclosure. I kept all the internals, closed it back up and boxed for potential warranty purposes.
See below for photos.
In terms of whether you'd find Red NAS 256mb drives in these, that possible as well. I got 8 of them; 2 and then 6 from two different locations. All Reds! The secret is in the serial numbers. Hopefully you can pick that up from my photos as well.
These work very well and have been working for me for almost 6 months now. They start off slightly noisy, but as you start to fill them up they really do quiet down. I have 8 in my case and I hear my low rpm fans before I hear these puppies. I am running all eight drives off of a P20 IT Mode flashed IBM ServeRAID M1015 card. Average read speed for all eight drives at full throttle is around 800mb/s and works superbly in FreeNAS 9.3+ in raid z configuration. The total raw storage of 58TB (not 64) is used to house my Plex library. I keep my OS and Plex Jail on separate raided SSDs for performance and redundancy purposes. My FreeNAS OS runs on two raided 60GB Corsair Force GTs and the Plex Jail runs off of two raided 180GB Intel SSDs. The OS runs pretty fast and Plex does all its work without having to access the Red drives for nothing but library updates and video playback.
My server motherboard houses three Intel Pro 1000 gigabit NICs, but I added another Intel quad i350 NIC with LACP enabled for a more balance network access of the drives. I even added a HDHomerun Quattro for Live TV and DVR option to my Plex server thanks to the tons of space these drives provide.
My Plex library is almost 22TB large and comprises of over 3000 movies in 1080P or better, tons of collected TV Drama, Anime and Sitcoms. Friends and family here and abroad stream videos off it and these drives handles them all flawlessly. Multiple users usually streaming at a time as well. They are great and haven't broken a sweat. Only issues I had was some data corruption when my server lost power during a rainstorm while data was being written to the drives. A quick zpool scrub was all I needed to fix that. They are flawless, trust me. I need to buy 2 more when they get back on sale.
I guess I could only add 2 photos max. LOL
Jun 16, 2018 07:43A bit slow for nowadays thought the capacity is the contemporary one. It's not the 7200 rpm certainly. Forget it. It's the 5700 rpm one(still not the fastest experienced in this class writing speed).
The primary reason I deducted stars from the rating however is due to the units poor heat management. This drive runs much hotter than other units I have previously used and consistently sits at or above 50C even when idol, and well over 60C when writing any medium to large data transfer or tasking which if not addressed has been found to directly lead to higher instances of drive failure as well as significantly reduced drive.
Personally I addressed this by 3D printing a custom fan shroud which fits an 80mm computer fan to the top of the unit , fully circulating air throughout the drive as pictured below. Overall great functionality and aesthetic compared to others I have previously used & would plan on purchasing more in the future/ recommending to a friend for increased storage needs.
Jul 20, 2021 14:14Great still holding up.it powers on when u need to use Storage space. Speed is OK no you’re fastest storage drive works well with 4K footage/ photos
Mar 27, 2021 17:02This is my second 8TB Easy Store. I have 0 complaints. Cheap, quiet and they help me increase my media collection. Best bargain around.
Jul 13, 2018 20:36Bought 6 to shuck for a RAID10 for $180 each. Bought a 7th one for $160 on Black Friday to add as hot spare. The drive inside retails for $250 at the moment.
Nov 28, 2017 12:02I've had no problems with this storage drive. this is my second "easystore" and I'm ready for a second larger one. Nice having all my movies at a cords reach!
Feb 17, 2021 19:30Packaging and everything looked fine. Opened up Speccy to check the SMART values, saw that the drive had been powered on 510 times and was on for 107.4 days.
Let's put that in perspective. If the average computer is on for 8 hours a day, that is nearly a year of use. This was supposed to be a new drive.
Jul 16, 2019 20:45The WD Blue everyday internal SATA hard drive delivers reliability for office and applications. The drive is designed for use with select PC and Mac desktops for storing a wealth of games, movies, music, pictures and more. Data transfer rates up to 6 Gbps ensure efficient performance.
I waited to long to check the drive as it only formats to 1.6 TB instead of 6TB.
Nov 26, 2021 18:24For storage, it is excellent. You only get 5.6TB and took about 18 hours to format normally. I didn't use quick format option because I wanted to see if any errors would come up. I rather see them now than later.
Oct 12, 2021 12:23Overall its a good buy . Using it for my surveillance dvr system to record. Its perfect
Dec 06, 2021 15:14Just wanted to make clear to anybody looking for a 7200RPM hard drive that this is not it. It's a very good hard drive, but if you're looking for a faster performance, there are other options to consider. BestBuy is listing this as 7200RPM, I already asked them to correct it so others don't make the same mistake.
Mar 27, 2015 17:07With hard drive prices so high right now, I felt the price per TB was decent enough to replace a dying drive.
Nov 20, 2021 08:59best buy search filters get ZERO STARS. Searched for 6TB SSD and this was in the results. Not actually helpful
Oct 29, 2021 19:50so far so good. Easy install and plenty of room. I'm pleased.
Nov 19, 2021 18:29Great value for this much data storage. Will probably purchase a second HD
Nov 01, 2021 14:10Increase functionality at your desk with this Seagate Backup Plus Hub. It provides 6TB of external storage, letting you keep videos, photos, documents and presentations without clogging your computer's file system. This Seagate Backup Plus Hub includes two front USB 3.0 ports for connectivity and charging devices as you work.
I have used the 8 TB size of their drives for years. These 6TB size are useful when the 8's are unavailable. When I travel, the 6TB size is fine for saving and backing up at my location. Later transfer to the 8TB bank when I return and weather keeps me indoors.
My work and leisure involve being in many different environments shooting photos and video up to 4K. Outdoor hiking, biking, kayaking, climbing and diving... Florida's underwater cave systems, rivers, springs and and ocean bays and reefs.
I seldom go outdoors without a camera. My diving always has me wearing a camera on my mask. I shoot tourism related events and have accumulated terabytes of photos and video over the decades.
As editing software has improved I've found that formerly unusable photos and video now can be brought back to life. This includes WWII era movies converted to video, then enhancing that video to be sharper than the original.
I have been using these hard drives for storing raw media, edited and produced videos for my use and client use since these first came out. I now have twelve drives with power strips that allow me to toggle them individually on and off and all connected in two 7-input powered USB hubs that then connect to my working laptop in two USB 3.0 ports.
So I am constantly saving media backups and backups of backups. I do it manually. Not religiously enough. But I'm always balancing my adventuring time outdoors and my editing time indoors to weather, seasons and travel. Every time I return from the field, I immediately save raw imagery to the drives, leaving the files on the camera media until I review and backup the hard drive.
Jul 14, 2021 10:04Bought this HDD to save movies, music and pictures for Plex Media Server and it is holding up very well so far. Plenty of storage and very easy to use (Plug & Play) I also like the backup feature should anything happen (fingers crossed) I have the ease of mind knowing that all of my data is safe. If your looking for some extra storage I think this is an all around great option for the price and value.
Jul 31, 2020 18:16Excellent drive. Love the two USB ports in the front of the drive.
Nov 06, 2021 05:32Bought this to use as a 3rd external drive for XBOX one. Yes, you can use 3 drives and Xbox recognized the 3rd one with no issues.
With this one plugged in front, the front two USB ports can be used for charging your controllers.
Jul 31, 2021 13:38My old back up disk failed. I like this one because it has ports I can use to charge my phone or my headphones. Nice size it can be mounted flat or on its side.
Aug 27, 2021 16:02This is my SECOND purchase of this 6TB Backup Plus Hub. The first one - connected to another Windows 10 computer - has worked quite well over the past four months so I decided to buy another one for another Windows 10 computer as I like the convenience of having the extra USB ports so easily accessed. However, THIS unit would either not be recognized by the second computer at all OR would somehow disconnect from the computer on its own (a few nights ago I checked to see if it was connected, the next morning it wasn't yet nothing had been done in the meantime). I have tried three different cables and "wiggled" the daylights out of them to, sometimes, get a connection made. I also hooked it up to another computer and the problem still remained. I was lead to believe that I could exchange the unit at a Best Buy store but the closest one didn't have any in stock plus checking on-line established that Best Buy had none in stock. I was told by a Best Buy employee to contact Seagate directly and have returned the unit to them. Fortunately, I do NOT trust computers and have a great fear of losing data that is important to my business (website, two catalogs, shop production info, etc. ) as I have had numerous computer-related failures since I bought my first one - an IBM PC AT in 1983 (?). I have other extra hard drives already connected to my computers for backups so this singular failure will not hurt me - it's just disappointing to waste so much time trying to figure what is wrong.
Apr 04, 2020 12:48You can't go wrong with Seagate, they put a stamp on their products and guarantee to be the best. This item speaks for itself.
Sep 19, 2021 09:40Easy setup and quiet . Works with my iMac easily..
Oct 29, 2021 16:13Mainstream option for SoHo (Small Office and Home Office) applications in 1 to 8-bay systems with light to moderate workloads and extended idle time (excluding ZFS). Build a robust shared storage system with this Western Digital Red NAS hard drive. Its NASware 3.0 technology provides for reliable performance in purpose-built NAS systems and RAID environments, and its error-recovery controls secure shared files against system failures. This 6TB Western Digital Red NAS hard drive is suitable for installation within up to eight drive bays.
Great hard drive! Used as a replacement for a drive that failed in my RAID. Most importantly, this drive uses the CMR standard which is a higher quality method of saving data to the drive. Definitely worth paying the extra $ for a CMR drive if you will be using this in a NAS/RAID system.
Jul 17, 2020 21:57I needed a replacement drive to replace one of my two 6Tb drives that failed out of warranty. Funny how that happens right when it ends!
Since these MyBook Duos look for real WD drives, I had to get a WD Red and this fit the bill perfectly. I opened up the case, dropped it in, and fired up the WD utility to let it rebuild the raid1 mirror. Sure, that part took hours, but I let it go overnight and now it's all set. Hopefully it will continue to go for another 2 years without issues.
Oct 18, 2020 20:526TB, what else can I say? Large storage, a solid Drive, I have 6 of them running in my NAS and need to replace two more 4TB. So far very reliable, no errors.
Oct 23, 2020 17:53Bought 4 of these for my Synology NAS. So far read/write speeds are great. No issues out of the box. I would highly recomme d.
Nov 06, 2020 15:47Bought 2 for home server network. Works great with WD WiFi network drives. Good value.
Oct 16, 2020 23:07I have bought several of these for my four Drobos and these are the best for them. The y hold up the best. I have upgraded them from 3 to 4 to 6tb as needed.
Mar 08, 2020 09:45Bought 4 of these drives to use in my Synology DS415+ and it is working great so far, no issues or complaints!
May 14, 2020 23:04Great nas drive. No issues after installation. Installed in drobo as a 5th drive and it works great.
May 03, 2019 16:21Backup up your photos or important documents with this SanDisk Professional G-DRIVE desktop hard drive. The sturdy all-aluminum enclosure withstands bumps for lasting durability, while the 6TB capacity provides plenty of storage room. This SanDisk Professional G-DRIVE desktop hard drive supports data transfer speeds of up to 5 Gbps for easy transfer of large files.
I have two of these G-DRIVE 4TB. So I bought this one for the new technology since I have a new Macbook Pro. The idiots at Best Buy tried to sell me an inferior hard drive they don't even know what they're even doing. I have never had any problems with any of these hard drives.
Nov 06, 2021 02:17I purchased this because I wanted an external HD with a power on switch. I do not need the drive on the entire time or have to disconnect the HD usb cord to turn off this drrive.
Oct 08, 2021 10:52Super Fast, Works Great! Bought this last minute for a documentary project, only one available was in the Houston area. I see why these are super popular, outstanding performance!
Sep 15, 2021 10:18Super solid feel. Have always gotten G-Drives for external storage and cold storage and this feels just as solid as always.
Oct 08, 2021 16:05Works well to backup work saved on the computer. Haven't had any issues.
Oct 16, 2021 14:47Work as good and fast I like speed and it stays cool
Oct 27, 2021 21:35Such a pain to try and install on a Windows Computer. Such a bad experience I returned it!
Oct 25, 2021 15:59Improve the performance of your computer with this SanDisk Professional G-DRIVE PRO desktop drive. Compatibility with your Mac or Windows operating system allows for transfer speeds of up to 250MB/sec., enabling fast data transfer across devices. This SanDisk Professional G-DRIVE PRO desktop drive has a 6TB capacity for ample storage space, and the Thunderbolt 3 and USB 3.2 ports deliver seamless connectivity.
Back up video and photos with this My Cloud Home personal storage device. It holds up to 6TB of content in a central location, and you can upload files via USB or wirelessly. Access files stored on this My Cloud Home personal storage device remotely by using its mobile, desktop and web-based apps.
This a replacement for my older WD cloud that I have almost 10 years old. I chose this 6 TB because I believed would be enough to store my family's personal files. That includes photos, videos and other stuff worthy for keeping. I liked this newer unit because it's way faster to access than the older one that I have which is slower but still keeping up saving automatically. Until now still working so I assumed this WD 6TB would last for at least 10 years as well like my older one. WD's cloud storage really durable so I am a repeat customer. The only thing that I never figured out yet with this newer one is how it save because I have 3 phones on same account. The older one saved everytime on the specific name I created. This new 6TB it mixes everything old and new files and I don't know now to have it sorted. I don't see any options there, only the modified date.
Overall I like it, hopefully it will be there if WD send an update for their software.
Mar 12, 2021 18:44I bought this to retire my apple time capsule, hoping its transfer speed is better than the old stuff discontinued by apple. Actually, I got the same speed as the old time capsule, which makes me to take one star off. Other than that, I found the backup of photos from Iphone is very helpful and convenient. HDD makes a little more noise than apple time capsule. I made a cushion under the bottom of it to reduce the noise. PLEX is very good. I can see my video even out of home now.
May 30, 2021 15:22Great product. I didn't want to pay for extra cloud storage so I bought this instead and I'm glad I did. I did notice that it gets a little warm but works great. I like how you can have different accounts for others as well.
Nov 01, 2021 11:20Is able to back up my device with ease. I can even plug in my other usb devices to the back it seems.
May 30, 2021 12:06Pro - Much easier to connect with and sync with my new LG 2021 laptop than the MyCloud I purchased many years ago. The network connection is consistent and uploads/downloads are fast.
Con - Hard to use with my old (4+year) laptop, so if using this to back-up an older computer you need be patient.
May 28, 2021 17:43THIS IS AN AMAZING PRODUCT THAT I LOVE MOST ABOUT THIS PRODUCT IT VERY FAST AND IT HOLDS ALOT WITH 6GB DRIVE YOU'LL NEVER RUN OUT OF SPACE
I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS TO A FRIEND
I WILL BUY ANOTHER ONE
KEEP UP THE EXCELLENT WORK
I LOVE THE PLEX FEATURE
May 07, 2021 20:47Failed in a few months. Software isn’t very good not very user friendly lost everything that was saved on drive. Totally dead
Nov 17, 2021 18:40Made the save to the cloud so easy and seemless and automatically
Aug 20, 2021 15:08
