Overall super amazing player, love the PQ and AQ!!

I felt compelled to write a review of this marvelous player. It blows away my previous player, the Sony X800. Though that is a very solid player, the PQ isn't as good and the sound isn't as good either, and no DV (dolby vision). The X800 has a better build quality with more metal but that's where it stops.

After hooking up this player, I threw in Baby Driver, which the first chase scene with his red car looks and sounds reference. I've also watched The Office on blu-ray and the upscaling on this player is second to none. It upscales blu-rays and makes them really look close to 4K. Next we watched Prisoners and having seen this movie several times on blu-ray, it was easily the most detailed and crisp it has ever looked.

The network streaming is also right on track. I have the Simpsons and Seinfeld ripped to my network hard drive (don't worry I own the discs) and both look great. Now it's standard definition but the network interface is nice and works just fine.

I would recommend this to anyone willing to spend a little extra to get the best audio and picture quality for your 4K set. I have a TCL 55" that does DV and it just looks so sharp with this player. It also upscales beautifully.

    Highly recommended!!

One of the best UHD BR players

It is one of the best BR players from Panasonic but, but have some issues for example: all movies in Netflix streaming are converted to Dolby Vision and this affects the original quality of the movie. If you have a decent AV receiver and good speakers then the sound and surround is amaizing.Super UHD TV+DPUB 820k+Surround System and you don't need to go out to the theater.

Watching BR movies is also amaizing to almost 4k.

    Best 4k blu ray player

Picture is better than any 4k player I ever seen or purchased. It especially looks best on the the 4k blu-rays. But you have to play with the settings of the player for the collars to really come out. Once you get everything set up the way you like it looks excellent for reals. It's a real keeper for reals. I can not be happier for reals. Thanks for everything bestbuy.

Main Unit Fine, Remote Almost Unusable

This 4k UHD Blu-ray player is fine except for the layout of the remote control. It absolutely defies one-handed operation. The layout places the most common keys back over the middle of your hand and the thumb can not bend in that direction. The solution is to hold the remote so close to the butt end that it is uncomfortable and easy to drop. Or use two hands. To heck with that! This seems like a petty complaint, but this is flat out the most uncomfortable remote I can remember ever using. It's bad enough that I am focusing my review on it.

I imagine I will get used to holding this remote but, right now, it makes me upset.

    Picture quality is great

Well I here everybody saying good things about this player so I bought it. And my Sony x800 player stopped working after 3 years. First thing the shipping was bad my box was beat up when I got it. So I'm not sure if thats why I had problems with it. I played 7 movies in it in 3 days. 2 movies locked up and I had to start it over and the one movie locked up 2 times. Then the last movie I played in it the sound cut out half way through the movie. So I decided to return it I had enough. I had them reorder a new one for me so I will see if I will have the same problem with the next one. If so then I guess I will try the high end sony. But the Sony doesn't like my anthem the well. I'm not sure what else to go to. I will say picture quality top notch. Functionality could use a little work for a higher end play to play disk better.

Took a while but it grew on me

At first I didnt really see much difference between this and my Sony x700. I mean, both do look amazing and I recommend that one if you dont wanna spend this much on a player.

The best is that it auto switches to Dolby Vision. The x700 made you manually turn it on and off. Sometimes I couldnt find details on the disc packaging to let me know if it even had dolby vision. If it does, you wanna watch it that way. Of you dont care about DV or your tv doesnt have that feature it's no big deal to you.

The UB820 has this awesome HDR button that allows you to brighten the HDR more if youd like. It has like 4 settings. Now, you're probably thinking that's something you can just adjust on your tv. It's not. I tried to do that and mimic thos feature bit no settings are the same and if they are it's way too many different adjustments compared to one button push.

This HDR button also works on streaming 4k sites like Amazon and Netflix.

You can also change the wallpaper on your homescreen which is cool. I have a Halloween one on mine right now.

I do wish the image of the movie appeared when a disc was in. My Samsung player does that and I love it. Shows a picture or mini poster of the movie.

The bad is really just that it doesnt have many apps. It's a shame too because I think it would make this player stand out more. I use the built in apps or firestick most of the time bit then I cant use the HDR button. Also I wish it had an input to run something else thru it.

Great player and the price is a little higher than I'd normally go bit if you're ok with it you shouldn't be disappointed.

And yes, I still do use that HD-DVD player in the picture.

    Budget Price, Pro level Performance

    - 4K playback is fantastic and picture is crisp and vibrant but still realistic

    - HDR playback including Dolby Vision and 3D

    - Separate HDMI audio OUT port (2 HDMI out total. 1 A/V and 1 Audio only)

    - Smaller size takes up less space

    - Upscaling quality is decent

    - Dolby Atmos and DTS-X supported as well as just about any other format

    - SDR conversion for non HDR TV’s for better SDR picture

    - Included HDMI cable is actually a decent cable, not low quality. ([email protected] 18gb)

    - Audio settings needed some adjustments to function properly for my setup

    - Network apps are limited to the popular few and probably not worth setting up if you have access already from a different source

    - Privacy Policy agreement (to use online apps) can not be undone without factory resetting

    - small remote with close proximity buttons

The Sony UBP-X700 is a smaller sized, budget friendly 4K player that behaves like the pricier, high end players and better than any other budget player in its class in my opinion. I tested the Sony x700 with a couple of newer 4K Blu-ray disks, remastered (older) 4K movies, as well as some DVD’s to upscale, and some audio CD sources. In every test, the player performed amazing and even better than my main 4K player in some categories. The picture quality is superb and colors are bright and vivid without looking unrealistic or overdone. Dolby Vision playback only makes this better and the ability to convert HDR sources on an SDR TV providing a better SDR image (think HDR lite) is a nice bonus if your TV doesn’t support HDR. But like most products, it’s not without its downfalls as well. Though minor and somewhat opinion based, I’ll cover these faults in more detail later. My biggest issue was audio in both quality and performance, but with some tweaking, I was able to fix most of my issues and get the player to work the way I wanted.

I started by testing Marvel’s Ant-Man and the Wasp in 4K dolby Vision with Dolby Atmos Audio. I have the 4K player hooked up to a fairly new (2020) Hisense 4K, top tier, 60 inch smart TV (with dolby vision support obviously) and the Vizio Elevate soundbar with atmos support. I ran a separate HDMI directly to the soundbar out of HDMI 2 on the Sony player and the video passed through an HDMI switch out of HDMI 1, before heading to the TV. This is all done with high quality HDMI cables and I had no issues with getting Dolby Vision and 4K resolution as well as Atmos signals sent out. With the specs out of the way, let’s get to the details.

With the player hooked up, I powered on the unit and was able to watch after a “quick start” walkthrough of settings. But I’m the kind of guy that likes to go through all the settings in the menu and make sure everything is set correctly for my system. I did have to change a few things from their defaults so checking over settings should be your first area of troubleshooting issues, but more on that later.

The picture quality was great for ant-man and the quantum realm was particularly vivid and bright. But the more natural scenes were not overly saturated or unrealistic looking, leaving a nice mix of quality, realistic picture without the “too vivid” feel some HDR players can give to more natural set scenes. The Dolby Atmos audio worked with no issues as well and my soundbar was able to decode the signal easily. One thing I did have to do was adjust the A/V sync on the player for 4K ultra HD blu rays but that was easily done with the options menu. When I played DVD’s later, this was not needed. I prefer to adjust A/V sync manually but your system may have an auto function and you could attempt to use that if you prefer.

While we’re talking about audio, my biggest issue I had with this player was getting the audio input source to stop switching to the ARC channel and instead stay on the HDMI 2 Out from the 4K player. I fixed this by changing the HDMI out setting from “Auto” to “HDMI 2” only. This stops the audio from sending over HDMI one and after changing this setting, I was able to stop my system from switching audio inputs throughout playback. This was a fairly easy fix once I found the issue and has been working ever since. Note, if you’re not using the second HDMI audio out from the 4K player, then this should not be an issue for you.

Moving on, I next played John Wick 3 to get a look at a darker, much more colorful movie full of action and superb colorist work and the results did not disappoint. Much like Ant-Man, The colors were vibrant and full without being too much. Skin tones still looked natural but brighter and the contrast, even in dark scenes, was really well represented. The atmos playback on John Wick put me right in the action and combined with the gorgeous picture, made what used to be my casual movie watching location rival my go to movie screening room in quality.

But what about upscaling DVD sources? Again the Sony X700 did not disappoint. I threw in my digitally remastered DVD of James Bond Goldfinger and the upscaling looked as good as my more expensive, pro level LG player and even better than my older Sony player. The picture was crisp but not overly sharpened and even being upscaled all the way to 4K, it was still a solid image and the colors were still vivid and bright. Obviously DVDs that are not remastered or just lower quality in general do not look AS good, but they still upscaled nice which is saying something for a budget player like this. The areas that usually struggle to perform on a budget 4K player just don’t seem to be a problem with the Sony X700. Even the older, pro level X800 lacks some of the features and quality of the newer. smaller, and cheaper X700.

Lastly I played a few audio sources like CD’s (yes those are still a thing) and USB audio files which all played nicely and without issues. It’s probably not really a feature most people will use, but for those few that will, you will also not be disappointed.

The network apps are a bit disappointing but also probably isn’t the main reason anyone buys this device. Most likely you will have a smart TV to use internet apps or a streaming stick etc. If you are planning to use this device for your streaming sources, note that there are not really a lot of apps, just the basics; Netflix, hulu, youtube, etc. Nothing like plex or crackle or other less popular apps. One last note on the apps, you have to agree to the privacy policy (like any other online access these days) to use the apps. Obviously I clicked agree so I could test the apps, but after realizing I wouldn’t use any network features and preferred not to “agree” to the privacy policy that shares data and info with “third party” sources, I tried to switch my settings to “disagree”. This is how I realized you can not undo your agreement to the privacy policy without a factory reset (which also resets all your personalized settings). This was not a deal breaker, but it is a bit annoying and says something about the new way your personal data is handled. Recently we’ve seen companies make moves to be more open and honest about the use of your data as well as giving you more control over what is shared. Unfortunately this device does not allow you to easily disagree with the policy after already agreeing.

Other than those few downsides however, the Sony UBP-X700 is one heck of a 4K player packed full of quality and features jammed into a smaller, sleek body ready for any home theater system. The picture is comparable to pro level players at a budget friendly price and you can’t go wrong with the Sony name. They know how to make a quality product and you won’t be disappointed.

    One word, really... WOW

I’m old enough to remember when VCRs were invented. They seemed magical. By today’s standard they had a laughable resolution, but then TVs weren’t any better, so they matched well. Then TVs started upping their game to 720p, and DVD players overtook VCRs, and from there, 1080p and Blu-ray disks to keep up, and now 4K TVs are the norm. Many of us have become used to streaming movies over wifi into our TVs, but what many may not know is that even if you are watching a 4K TV, you may not actually be getting a true 4K stream. Smart TVs are quirky in how they handle streams, and not all give you the best they can, and if your satellite or cable boxes are more than a couple of years old, they may not actually be capable of sending true 4K signals to your TVs. Enter a 4K DVD player such as the “Sony UBP-X700m Ultra Blu-ray and DVD player”. I’ll refer to it as the Sony X700 for short.

The Sony X700 looks like many other standard disk players over time, but packs a ton of features into it. It includes an 18 Gbps HDMI cable to make sure the video stream is high quality going into your TV. It can play pretty much any disk from old DVDs to Blu-rays, audio disks, and the newest 4K Ultra disks. It will upconvert your older disks into a higher resolution as well, so they look better than they originally did using Dolby Vision. File and disk formats it will play include FLAC/WAV/ALAC/AIFF/HEVC/AVC, etc. Two HDMI ports on the back are for video and audio, and Dolby Audio cranks out clear sound, and with the right equipment, Dolby Atmos and DTS-X surround sound will give movie theater quality sound. Smart features allow you to stream popular apps like Netflix and Youtube (there’s a dedicated Netflix button on the remote) and you can add your own favorites to the streaming menu as well.

Setting up the X700 was a breeze. I didn’t even have to look at the instructions to get the basics going, and it only took a few minutes to enter my wifi password for the machine to get fully set up. It’s quiet, too – playing the test disk I bought, there was no rattling or clanking or loud fan noises from the machine (something not every machine can say). So, I put in my 4K Planet Earth disk and I’ll have to say – the X700 blew me away. I tested it on a 65 inch 4K TV and the picture coming directly from the Sony was amazing – BETTER than what the TV on it’s own cranks out when using satellite or streaming. Colors and details were very vibrant and stood out, and the sound quality was equally as good. I could not rate it better in this regard.

When streaming Youtube and Netflix, likewise, the X700 seems to get more detail info from the streams than my TV does on it’s own – the streams again, looked better, too. Sony says it’s because this model uses “MIMO” technology which basically boosts wifi signals getting you better speeds and quality. The remote is small, but the major buttons are larger and easy to find. It’s easy to navigate the menus, videos, and DVD controls and it doesn’t feel cheap. No complaints there. Audio disks play just fine, and sound great on my TV’s speakers, but you can rig up other equipment via the ports as well for your needs.

So, yes, I recommend the Sony UBP-X700m. If you’re coming from any kind of old regular DVD or Blu-ray player, you’ll definitely see major upgrades using this machine. My ONE complaint… the power plug is very large that plugs into your strip or outlet, and I think they could have done better having a normal sized plug and a brick halfway up the cord so you can keep it out of the way better. But I won’t knock a point off for that – it’s rare I give 5 stars unless something is perfect or near so, but the X700 is near so… so yep, 5 stars!

Does more than just play Blu-ray in 4K

The Sony Ultra HD Blu-ray DVD player plays standard DVD, Blu-ray, 3D Blu-ray, and the Ultra HD 4K Blu-ray. It also plays music CDs, and a front port offers a USB A port for playing music, video and photos. Then you can stream wired or wireless (2.4GHz) internet (should have 5G WiFi too) with the 9 Movie/TV Apps: prime video, Fox News, hulu, NETFLIX, tubi, VUDU, YouTube, YouTube Kids, and yuppy TV and the 6 music Apps: Berliner Philharmoniker, pandora, Sirius XM, Slacker Radio, Spotify and iHeartRadio. Unfortunately those are the only ones and no way to add others. At the moment anyways. I hope they add more. I have Dish Network and have to change sources to access the steaming features on our Samsung TV. This is a much easier way with a more direct way to access my streaming at least the prime video, hulu and YouTube included. I updated the software and no more Apps were added. If you have Amazon Prime it’s as simple as using your smartphone and an on screen QR code to enable the built in app. We have Hulu, YouTube and SiriusXM. All worked fine with the player.

Setup was easy to do. Just follow the instructions. There are several ways to connect the player to your TV as shown in the instructions. However, I have a Samsung 4K TV and Samsung sound bar that is fed from input 2, HDMI / ARC. ARC means Audio Return Channel. In my case I connected the player to the HDMI input on the soundbar which now acts as input 2 to the TV. The Sony Ultra HD Blu-Ray player comes with a Digital out (coaxial) jack, two HDMI jacks one is for video/audio and the other is audio only, the USB A jack is on the front of the player. To program the remote to access the TV input, power and volume controls was literally 2 seconds to program. The remote has a Home button to access the streaming features as well as a NETFLIX direct access button. Making hulu a favorite direct access button on the remote was easy to set up. I would like to have been able to choose a second one vs the NETFLIX preprogrammed one. The four yellow, blue, red and green are shortcut keys for interactive functions. They didn’t do anything for me regardless of what I was doing. Disk or app.

Player comes with a Power Adapter, HDMI Cable, Remote with batteries included. Feels pretty solid. All black.

I put some 4K videos from my Samsung Note 10+, photos and 4K videos from Canon EOS R on a USB thumb drive and enjoyed playing them from the player. Having the USB A jack on the front of the player sure beats trying to access USB on the back of a TV hanging on the wall just out of reach. One of us uses this player every day for music or streaming. It responds faster to navigating its apps than the TV does. Too bad the number of app options are limited.

Also of note: Of all the picture quality features and options that this player boasts of, what you will actually get depends on high end your TV is and what its picture settings are. Obviously the higher end the better to take advantage of HDR.

Conclusion is it worked perfect for me for its primary purpose. Playing 4K Blu-ray and other Disk Media. I consider the streaming apps a bonus so I'm not counting off for it lacking apps or no 5G WiFi.

    Worthy upgrade!

I just recently bought a 4k DVD player made by a different company, and after testing this Sony one, I'm kicking myself for overlooking it. I've always had great luck with Sony DVD players in the past, and I feel like this one will be just as reliable as others I have owned. Out of the box, my first impression was how pleasantly small this player is, especially compared to the other one I just bought. Set up was a breeze (the player walks you through everything), and the player was up and running within a few minutes of hooking it up to my tv. The only issue I had during setup was that I never got the DVD player's remote to sync with the TV, but my TV remote automatically synched to the DVD player.

The picture quality with this player is excellent! I use a sound bar for my tv and I felt that the sound quality was better than normal when watching a 4k UHD DVD as well. One sound issue I did have was that there was a noticeable delay in sound when playing the movie after it was paused. (The movie would start without sound for a couple seconds.) The player loads discs very quickly, and navigation throughout the menu and apps is quick as well. The wifi connection with the player is also excellent. I had no connection problems with it running off the wifi, but there is a built in ethernet port if needed.

The remote is very handy and I love all the menu option buttons on it. Don't lose your remote though because the buttons directly on the face of the player are limited to an on/off button and an eject button.

The player does come with quite a few built-in apps (see attached picture), but you can't add additional apps. To me, I feel like this kind of defeats the purpose of having a "smart" DVD player. Additionally, in order to access the built-in apps, you have to give permission to having your data tracked -which I'm not a fan of, but is likely happening with other devices I use either way.

Overall, I am very happy with this 4k UHD DVD player. I do think it's performance is superior to the other 4k DVD player I just recently bought, which means the value is definitely there with the higher price point. The player offers many playing options which makes for a very versatile player for any household.

    -Excellent picture and sound quality

    -Excellent wifi connection

    -Compact size

    -Quickly load discs

-Numerous playing options plus included built-in apps

-Quick response when navigating menu options

-Remote control buttons include menu options which is super convenient

-TV remote automatically synched up with the DVD player (even though it's a different brand)

-Delay in sound from pause to play

-Limited buttons on the face of the player

-Can't add additional apps to player (apps are built-in)

-Have to agree to data tracking in order to access built-in apps

-Remote control didn't synch with TV

-Resume playing feature lacking (It doesn't automatically start from where you left off. A pop-up selection option to resume play appears when the movie is first started back up, and if you don't select it, then it seems you're out of luck as it will start from the beginning.)

    Compact and Easy to Use

If you need a blu-ray player, this is definitely the one to get. It's versatile, works flawlessly and is easy to use.

I hooked up this player to my QLED 4K TV and high-end soundbar which has Dolby Atmos capabilities. With that setup I needed a good blu-ray player to make use of it. Setup is very easy, plug it in, attach the included high speed 18Gbps HDMI cable and turn it on. It walks you through a few steps to get WiFi and everything all set up.

First thing I did was put in my Ultra HD Avengers Endgame disc. The picture was amazing and made full use of the TV's capabilities. One of the reasons I like having a blu-ray player is that even with streaming services pumping out 4K content, it's still not as crisp as a disc.

Using all the features was really intuitive as well. I was able to fairly easily figure out how to use the menu's, try different options, skip scenes, etc.

Of course not all movies are available on blu-ray. I have a few older DVD's that were never released in a newer format, and this player is fully compatible with all the other DVD's I tried. Same with CD's. I actually still have a few laying around and was able to pop them in and play them. And with the old DVD's, it even seemed to put out the best picture it could with what it was working with.

Between all of the formats, the outputted audio quality is excellent as well. With the Ultra HD Avengers Endgame, I had full Dolby sound coming out of my sound system. DVD's and CD's were both clear and smooth.

Of course it also plays digital content through WiFi so you can still stream Netflix or other streaming apps through it, and still with excellent audio and video quality. Altogether, this blu-ray player is more of a media center. And even though everything's going digital, you just aren't going to get as good of use of your TV's 4K capabilities like you will with physical media. Best of all, you're not relying on Internet. So when the internet goes out, you can still play all those discs you have.

Overall this is probably the best video player of any kind that I've had. I honestly don't have one negative thing to say about it. It's sleek, compact, sets up in just a couple minutes, easy to use even without reading the manual, and produces some of the best picture that's ever played on my 4K TV with great audio to boot. I whole-heartedly recommend this player if you're in the market for one

    Entertainment Powerbox

Physical media is still a thing and not everyone is into streaming and may have a preference for disc based media.

As most modern Blu-ray players and media devices it isn't uncommon for them to be a "jack of all trades" where it does a little bit of everything and by that I mean it's primary purpose which is to play disc based media but thus Blu-ray player has streaming capabilities with support for current media consumption.

In this review I'll be discussing the Sony 4K HDR Blu-ray player and all that it has to offer.

    ::Initial impressions::

My unboxing experience was pretty much what you would expect a fairly simple process. The Blu-ray player, a pair of batteries, remote control, and an 18gbps HDMI cable which is good at displaying 4K content at a maximum of 60Hz if my memory serves correct.

It was a relief to see an included HDMI cable in the box but as far as I can remember Sony is typically generous with their devices and include what is necessary to enjoy their products.

    ::General thoughts::

Setup was a breeze and this device has a minimalistic UI (user interface) while it is tried and true I would love to see Sony try something new and use an updated UI perhaps they can adopt the one that's used on the PS5. The UI that Sony is using I believe is similar to that of the PS3. I guess "if it ain't broken don't fix it". I'd love to see Sony adopt Android TV OS, or even Google TV into their Blu-ray players much like they do on their televisions. I believe it is much needed and possibly may even improve sales because it would essentially become more like a high end media streaming device.

The simplistic design is appreciated it isn't a total fingerprint magnet and that's awesome. And it doesn't feel sluggish which is great. You pop in a disc and the film or TV show starts up in seconds.

HDR can be subjective but in what sense you may wonder? Well to best explain that your Television would be doing the processing so if you bought a TV with mediocre to non existent HDR implementation then you will not get the best results.

The old saying goes you get what you pay for. My Television is pretty good and gets really bright. When your Television is properly calibrated and you watch Dolby vision content you can really enjoy content on your television whether it be a disc or via streaming. I tried out a few movies and watched some Netflix. I really enjoyed watching Batman VS Superman and I also watched the Snyder Cut of Justice League. I am impressed with the HDR capabilities it is what you would expect bright scenes that pop and dark scenes that set whatever mood that was intended by the director.

    ::Pros & Cons::

    - Fast

    - Excellent HDR support

    - Small form factor

    - included all necessary accessories

    - Trusted brand

    - Outdated UI

    - Needs more apps

    ::Closing thoughts::

Overall this 4K HDR Blu-ray player is a solid device and is near perfect. It is fast and has streaming capabilities which is plenty for most consumers. The thing that holds it back from being perfect are the lack of an app store that offers lots of the popular apps. The UI can be overlooked because that's minor in the grand scheme of things.

If you don't have a 4K Blu-ray player consider this one it is fast, solid, has HDR and will do all that you want it to do.

Great Compact, Budget Friendly 4K DVD Player

So it's 2021 and you're wondering, why should I even think about getting a DVD player? My kids only know about DVDs because of the discs I put in my PS5 or Xbox Series X. Well, if you're like me and care about having the ultimate picture and audio quality (and making your 4k TV really bring out its capabilities) when watching movies, a 4k DVD player is the answer. Coming in as a contender, the X700 is a great budget and compact 4k DVD player.

A little larger than the size of a piece of 8.5" x 11" printer paper, it comes in a hard plastic housing with the front having a lint attractive glossy look. On the back it has 2 HDMI ports (has the option to separate video from sound if you prefer to), an ethernet port, a coax port, ethernet port, and power port. On the front it also includes a USB port where you can connect an external hard drive or flash drive to watch out listen to video or audio content. The X700 comes with everything you need to get started watching movies and shows. Plug in the power cord and the 18Gbs HDMI it comes with (allows for a full 4k UHD 60fps/Hz signal) and you're ready to go. The X700 supports 4k UHD (upscale to 4k 60p as well), HDR10, and Dolby Vision for video and Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, and Dolby True HD for audio features. It also comes equipped with popular streaming apps Netflix, YouTube, Hulu, Vudu, Prime Video to name a few. After connecting to your Wi-Fi with the X700s built in Wi-Fi, you could then start using the streaming apps. Additionally, you also the capability to cast your mobile device screen or laptop through Miracast via the X700 (if they support it).

The quality of watching movies with the X700 is stunning and amazing. Compared to watching 4K HDR movies from streaming services, through the X700 video and audio shows to be clearer, colors are more vivid, and there are also darker blacks. This is due to the DVD player having the bandwidth to display all of the data from a 4k UHD disc while streamed movies only use about a fifth of the data, give or take. Another great thing about the X700 is the ability to play older DVDs, Blu-Ray DVDs, and CDs on it.

Although the X700 has many great features, there are a few downsides to it. The biggest downside for me is that it does not come with other popular streaming apps like Disney+, Paramount, Noggin, and others (and has not released an update to include them). While most 4k TVs are also smart TVs and have these apps, it would've been nice to have the option to use them from the DVD player as well. Another downside is that it doesn't include the latest HDR10+ technology (essentially a brighter display) as well (although there isn't much content out that is using it).

Being at a great price point and offering many features, the Sony X700 is a great buy for those looking to get the most out of their 4k TVs picture quality and wanting to get into 4k DVD watching. Because it comes in a smaller form factor and supports HDR and Dolby Vision technology, it makes it an even better buy.

    This don’t have Dolby Atmos!

I set this up with my LG CX65 tv and LG Dolby Atmos Sound bar and I was unable to get Dolby Atmos sound. Went to VUDU and even though is saying Atmos the sound is not showing on either the tv or sound bar. I knew that for this price is too good to be true. Heading back to Best Buy tomorrow afternoon

    Great Economical Blue-ray Player!

I got this to replace my old bedroom DVD player and to update to Blue-Ray. First of all, I really like the form factor. Its only about 6 inch by 7inch in size, so it’s very compact and fits nicely under the tv’s short stand. This ensures it stays somewhat hidden but also maintains a clear line of sight for the remote to function efficiently.

As for the primary purpose here, I tried a couple Blue-rays and was blown away. I have Blue-ray on my primary TV but I guess not having it on the other TV makes the upgrade much more dramatic! Full 1080p HD makes a huge difference. I also put in a couple older Christmas movie DVD’s and wanted to see how well the upscaling was. It did make a significant difference on a few couple that I tested. On some of the others ( maybe older), there was less of an improvement.

Sound quality was excellent. I tried it with the tv and also with my smaller soundbar and the soundbar definitely took advantage of the Dolby and DTS-HD. One minor thing, other than the HDMI for sound there is only a digital audio jack and not an optical connection. Not that big of a deal, just know that you will need that type of cable if you expect to use it.

Streaming was as expected, smooth and simple. I tested both Netflix and Youtube without any issues. One thing to do during setup is make sure you select the “Quick Start”. It basically speeds up the power up and access to the menu. There might be a very tiny increase in power consumption but if you use this player frequently, you will want that turned on.

Options abound in the setup menu, very customizable. You can set it to notify you if there is a software update. Mine updated at least twice I think after setting it up. It also comes with an HDMI cable that appears to be a good quality which is a nice feature, especially at the price point.

I did try the “casting” from my phone. I am on Android and use chrome to “cast” to the blue-ray player. There were a couple glitches but after two tries, I was able to quickly cast a youtube video from my phone to the unit. That is always nice if you want to quickly take advantage of the big screen without having to stop, fire up the app, search and then display.

Overall I am very pleased with the unit. Other than the casting and a couple times the menu seemed to pause, everything else worked as described. I would recommend this unit.

GOOD THING (Sony Blu-Ray) in a SMALL PACKAGE

GOOD THING (Sony Blu-Ray player) in a SMALL PACKAGE (bdp-bx370)

The Sony BDP-BX370 is a solid well-built and easy to use blu-ray (and DVD) disc player, that also is a good all-around streamer. As physical media slowly goes the way of the dodo, it is important to have a reliable player for your existing (legacy) media as well as a device that supports modern streaming needs. Or another way to look at it, for less than the price of many dedicated media streamers, you also get a blu-ray player. One area where Sony has really come a long way is being able to support DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance), and MKV (Matroska Video) format for local streaming from my NAS (Network Attached Storage) server. My Sony TV, which is not that old, actually locks up when I play most MKV’s and has to be unplugged and rebooted to start working again. This is a must have for me, as I always watch my videos from my NAS and put the physical media away for safe keeping. Now I can play MKV’s and other formats with ease through the Sony BDP-BX370.

    - Compact Design, yet sturdy enough

    - Compact but well organized remote (also can control Sony TV)

    - Fast Start Option (when enabled)

    - Included Cable

    - WiFi enabled (ALSO HAS LAN PORT)

    - USB Port for local media

The Sony BDP-BX370 was easy to setup, like any other device, just connect to your systems and configure your wireless network. The remote automatically recognized my Sony TV and soundbar so I am able to control both from the included remote. I was able to play almost anything from my NAS server, with the exception of UHD 4K (expected) and HD Dolby Atmos Tracks (hopeful, but expected). Music was fine, no issues but I would have liked a PLEX app.

The Sony BDP-BX370 does everything you need / expect from a name brand Blu-Ray Player as well as streaming most popular platforms and local devices through DLNA support. Do note that it is not a 4K device. This means that you are streaming at HD (not 4K) and that it is not upscaling to 4K, when connected to a 4K TV. For most people this does not matter, as your 4K TV will handle the upscaling for you. You just might not be able to stream “native” 4K content at highest resolution. However, also note that to get to a 4K UHD player you might need to invest 3X or 4X more. (I can also highly recommend the Sony UHD 4K player, which I also own).

I could not think of anything more to ask from a blu-ray player at this price point. It does everything I can think of.

Great Disc Player but Outdated Steamer

I would only recommend this player if you are looking to play CD, DVD or non-4k Blu-ray disc . If you own a 4k TV or 4k Blu-ray disc then you definitely want to pass on this model. Also the streaming capability is very limited due to the lack of common apps – no Amazon, Spotify, Hulu, Discovery, Disney or many other popular apps that you can find on the vast majority of streaming devices today. Because of this I would not recommend this player for streaming purposes.

Setup And Streaming: Getting the player operational was fairly straight forward. Once I connected the hdmi cable and powered it up I was able to connect it to my wireless network without issue. This is where the disappointment started because the home screen has very few of the popular streaming apps and there is no way to add ones that are missing. I also noticed that the app selection process was slow and tedious, its definitely not in the same class as even the lower cost Roku or Amazon sticks available today. The remote control’s size and functionality were good and it worked well with the player.

Playing: This is where this player really shined. The DVD and Blu-ray load times were very fast. I was able to play music CDs that were purchased as well as created on my pc. I was able to play every type of DVD including home videos I created on DVDs using my pc. The player did a reasonably good job upscaling the DVDs to HD but it was definitely obvious that it was being upscaled due to the clarity of the resolution. I was also able to play Blu-ray content and the HD resolution was fantastic. The clarity and colors were great and typical of what you would expect from a Sony device. The player has a USB port on the front of the unit and I was able to play music, display photos and play videos from a USB drive. The only downside of this player is that there are no controls (play, stop, fast forward, rewind, pause) on the front of the player so you are totally reliant on the remote control. If you ever lose the remote any universal remote should work but its definitely an inconvenience to not have the standard function buttons on the front of the player.

    - Played every CD, DVD and non-4k Blu-ray disc that I tried.

    - Played music files, photos and video files using the USB port

    - Compact design and small footprint

    - Fast at loading DVD and Blu-ray disc

    - Supports wi-fi as well as hard wired ethernet connections

    - Doesn’t support many popular apps and there is no way to add them

    - No front panel control buttons (Play, Stop, Fast Forward, Rewind, Pause)

    - Doesn’t upscale to 4k or support 4k content

    - Streaming functions were tedious and slow

    Good Mid-Range Blu-Ray Player

This affordable Blu-Ray player has great picture and sound quality in a compact size. I was impressed WPS as an option to quickly connect to the Wi-Fi. There are some down sides to a sub-hundred-dollar player, but I believe Sony hit the correct balance in giving the user the best experience for the price.

    Easy Wi-Fi setup with WPS

    Fast bootup

    Compact size

    Netflix and YouTube app loaded

Lacks ability to add apps such as Disney+, Hulu, or Amazon Prime

    Disappointing app loading speeds

If you still use Blu-Ray or DVD discs or do not have access to high-speed internet and are on a budget, I would highly recommend this player. If you are hoping that this player can add smart functions to an older TV and want to use many popular apps, I would first check to see if your desired app is included, or consider buying a Roku instead.

Inexpensive DVD Player With High-End Features

Because of the Pandemic and Self-Quarantine my wife and I ordered many full DVD series of our favorite shows to escape boredom. We ordered them 'on-line' from Best Buy and had them delivered to our home. Some of them included the complete DVD series of Frasier, Everybody Loves Raymond, Golden Girls, and Becker to name a few of our favorites. Our decade-old DVD player did a decent job of playing these DVDs for the most part, but would constantly skip when I least expected it. Even though I ran the sound through my AV Amplifier it was disappointing, not energizing or full-bodied.

So, when I had an opportunity to review the Sony Blu-Ray Disc/DVD Player, BDP-BX370 in exchange for the actual product I was excited. What was interesting for me to note is that this Sony cost only a third of what my older DVD player did. And, it is a high resolution, Blu-Ray with numerous other features and updated sound codecs. We can now play Blu-Ray Discs, which would NOT play on our older unit. WooHoo! My wife bought the complete Downton Abbey series from Best Buy and all of the 21 Disc-Set was Blu-Ray. Our older DVD player read these discs as an 'error' in the reading process. This Sony allows us to play them in high visual definition (1080P) on our 'Smart-TV'. My wife is 'super-happy'. What is also impressive is that the sound connected through my high-end AV Receiver is dynamic, robust, and fully adjustable using my 'equalizers'. LOVE IT!

The footprint of this Sony Blu-Ray player is amazing. It is a scant 9 1/8 inches Wide by 7 ¾ inches Deep, and only 1 and 9/16 inches High. It weighs approximately 1 Pound and 13 Ounces. The 'Learning Curve' of this unit is so intuitive and simple. It took me all of ten minutes to take this unit out of the box, read the directions, and hook-up. YooHoo!

Here are the 'Other' Features this Sony Blu-Ray Disc/DVD Player, BDP-BX370 offers:

    * NETWORK CONNECTION– Using a Hard-Wired LAN connection from Sony unit to Home Router.

    * Wi-Fi CONNECTION – Using Wireless LAN built into this unit just follow the simple instructions in 'Settings' on the Home Page. Have your router password handy. This is ONLY a 2.4GHz Wireless connection. However, if you plan to do a lot of 'streaming' over the Internet using this Sony I suggest you hard-wire the LAN connection directly from this Sony to your Home Router for more bandwidth.

    * APPS– You can choose from a multitude of Apps categorized in 'Settings' on the Home Page. Nice! However, many popular Apps are NOT available at this time.

    * REMOTE – Easy to use and responsive. Can incorporate TV settings if applicable code settings are listed as 'controllable' TVs.

    * ENHANCED SOUND – I connected my Sony directly to my AV Amp through HDMI cables, but a coaxial digital cable can also be used. With the 'updated' sound codecs I am impressed with the sound reproduction.

    * SOFTWARE UPDATE – As long as this Sony is connected to the Internet through the 'settings' it an easily be updated.

    * CHILD LOCK – This is important to me concerning my younger Grand Children.

    * SCREEN MIRRORING – An image, video, or other media can be displayed to my Smart TV through this Sony from a compatible mobile device. How cool is that?

In summary I highly recommend this affordable, feature-packed Sony Blu-Ray Disc/DVD Player, BDP-BX370. Outstanding video resolution and sound. You can spend a lot more money on a higher end Blu-Ray player, but in comparison for features this Sony is a bargain!

    Good 1080P Blu-Ray Player!

The Sony Blu-Ray/DVD Player model BDP-BX370 seems to be a great deal for the features you get at the asking price. I had no problem setting it up with my other hardware which includes my TV, soundbar with subwoofer, and Dish receiver. I was easily able to add it to my remote via my harmony hub by plugging it into my PC and adding the device into the Master bedroom setup using the watch a movie button on my remote to activate the necessary hardware. The Player comes with YouTube and is miracast capable which is great but when I tried using it from my wifes phone and casting to the TV via the Blu-Ray player the picture looked bad. I ended up just signing out from the phone and signing her into her YouTube account on the player and then used a wired connection for the internet. It should not have been a problem with wireless considering we have gigabit fiber service and Netgear Orbi’s all over the house. It could have been due to some type of interference, not really sure but I expected better. The Sony BDP-BX370 has a good user interface that was easy to navigate and it also has a nice controller as well as a decent assortment of available apps for streaming. My wife wants to use it for dance exercise videos and I was impressed by the picture it produced from a regular DVD. It was very sharp and clear! I did notice the sound was not as loud compared to when we are watching TV through the Dish system for some reason but we can just turn it up or I may be able to change some settings for that. I put it on surround so maybe I should set it to stereo and try that. It has other sound settings as well like PCM and Dolby so there is a comprehensive settings menu. I would say for the price you can’t go wrong if you are looking for a 1080p Blu-Ray/DVD player; it has to upscale built-in for older DVDs to make them look close to 1080p. Overall it is very feature-packed for an item at the price point it is set at and I would not hesitate to recommend it to someone.

This little blue-ray DVD player is Good

I have to say when I opened the box I was surprised at how small this Sony Blue Ray DVD player is. It is real small and very light, but it packs a punch. It comes with all you need to get started in terms of a remote and an HDMI cable. It was very easy to set-up and the unit has the ability to connect by wi-fi. On the menu are a number of the well known apps. The DVD player plays all the standard disc formats and also offers screen mirroring which has become popular by way of the fact that it seems to be offered on many products these days. The wi-fi connection worked flawlessly for me. The unit and our wi-fi found each other without issue. Screen mirroring from the cell phone works quite well too. The DVD player starts almost immediately after the disc is inserted and the video quality is quite good, but remember video quality is also tied to the quality of your HDMI cable as well as the device. The remote is pretty standard no great features, but it works well and is responsive. Sound quality is also very good. If you are like me and you still feel the need for a DVD player and you have DVDs near and dear to you then this player is a very good choice. The Sony name and the Sony quality make this DVD very attractive. Small yes, but mighty indeed.

    Great compact design

For those of us that like to stream content, but still also like to enjoy our DVD and Blu-ray libraries, this is a great option.

    - Plays DVDs, Blu-Rays, and CDs perfectly well

    - Menus function well, with fairly low lag when going from screen to screen. Apps load well and function without issue.

    - An HDMI cable is included! Some manufacturers try to save a few bucks by not including them.

    - Disc tray is nicely hidden to give the unit a very sleek look.

    - Despite having a disc drive, the form factor is excellent. You can fit this device nearly anywhere. I've shared a photo with a deck of cards for scale.

    - Has a standby feature that helps you turn it on and off very quickly.

I have not come across anything that I don't like about this Blu-ray player yet. It should come in nice and handy when we want to watch some of our old favorites or if our internet service ever goes down!

    Dvd Satisfaction

I bought it thinking it was like my older one that broke, but I'm glad with this purchase cause it's much better than the one I had. Plus in the remote I can open and close the dvd tray, like with the other one I had to manually press a button on the player to get the dvd out. And it plays the movies clear. I'm very happy.

The remote control did not work

I purchased this open box. I already noticed the remote does not work properly. But I thought nothing of it because the pandemic hit and thing s became chaotic in the house. I have not used it for a while and I did not have any new DVD to play. Lately, I started to use it again, but the remote does not work. I thought it was the battery. So I bought some new batteries. Did not work. I used my mother's remote. The same kind of DVD player . Her remote worked on my player. But now it is too late for me to return this item. I will try to contact Sony and see what will happen.

    Good DVD Player

This is a good DVD Player. It is very inexpensive, yet provides excellent picture and sound quality. My only dislike is the fact that there is only a single, very small light on the front to let you know the unit is turned on. It does not have a display, like my previous Sony DVD player, that showed the status (e.g., playing time, etc.).

Okay for the price, horrid blacks

    The good:

    - Acceptable battery life

    - Sound is ok

    - Easy to use

    - Screen decent during bright scenes

    The bad:

    - Feels cheap, particularly the buttons

    - No picture controls

    - Need to use the remote for most functions

    - Absolutely horrid blacks. Dark scenes are basically unwatchable

The last point is what causes this to get 2 stars. Dark scenes are beyond terrible. Easily the worst blacks I've seen on any screen. Far too much backlighting washes out the picture, leaving everything a grey blob. And on top of that, there's no display controls.

If you only watch bright movies, it's fine. Otherwise, look for alternatives.

No Frills. Simple & Easy To Use.

I genuinely appreciate that this LG 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray player has no frills and no gimmicks. It focuses only only playing whatever disc is inserted. There is no WiFi and there are no Smart apps cluttering the menu. Insert a CD, DVD, Blu-Ray, or 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray and it loads and plays quickly. You can also play content from a USB drive (if you so choose).

My only minor complaint is that the player is about 17 inches wide - which is too wide for a lot of media cabinets. For me, this means that the player must sit on top of the cabinet. It is slim enough to fit under my HDTV, but then it gets in the way of my soundbar. Make sure you measure your cabinet/shelf before you purchase so that you can plan on where it will sit.

NOTE: If you want access to Dolby Vision, WiFi, or apps (such as Netflix) you have the option of spending about $50 more to purchase the LG UBK90. But honestly, so many devices already provide access to Netflix, Hulu, Spotify, etc that most users will probably appreciate the simplicity and lower price of this UBK80.

+ Very Simple Menu / User interface: Plays 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray disc quickly & easily.

+ Loads discs quickly (which is something that is often an issue with Blu-Ray players).

+ Ability to download updates through the wired internet connection (you do not need to plug in a USB drive)

+ Backwards compatible: Can play Audio CDs, CD/DVD ROMs, DVD, Blu-Ray discs etc.

+ Comes with a full function remote that is able to power on your TV's and adjust the input & volume level.

+ Does support 3D content - Although 3D HDTVs are no longer produced.

+ Able to play content from a USB drive.

    - No WiFi connection

    - No smart features / apps

    - 17 inches wide (which does not fit in many media cabinet shelves)

    - No streaming option for Music. You can only play files from a disk or a USB drive.

    - Difficult to control without the remote (as the face of the player only has Eject, Play/Pause, Stop, & Power buttons.

    - Does not support Dolby Vision

    - Has only 1 HDMI output

    - Does not come with the required HDMI cable (or with audio or Ethernet cables).

Decent UHD player without the streaming apps...

This is a good 4K BD player at it's core, but outside of playing BD's, 3D BD's and UHDBD's, it doesn't offer much more. This comes as a shock, seeing as how most devices today, are equipped as a smart device.

When I first opened the box and read the instructions, I was surprised to discover, that this UHD player doesn't have access to the LG App Store.. In fact, this player doesn't have any apps at all. That's not an entirely bad thing though.. While, there are no apps, this player does let you stream media over your local internet. Not only that, but there is also a USB port that lets you play a very wide selection of media files. The LG UBK80 even plays FLAC files for High-Res audio. Another surprise was, this player is not WIFI enabled. It does have an ethernet port for connecting to the internet for software updates and BD live content, but that makes for a nuisance if your player isn't located near a router.

After I connected everything and set up the wired network, I decided to take it for a spin. I popped in Wonder Woman UHD Blu-Ray and pressed play..I will say, I was extremely impressed with how fast this player loaded the movie, it loaded almost instantly! The picture quality was very crisp and colorful, everything you'd come to expect from watching a 4K BD. The sound quality was good too, Dolby Atmos really comes to life on a 4K BD.

Overall, I would say that I am pretty happy with the LG UBK80 as a stand alone 4KBD player. It's a straight forward 4KBD player, that loads very fast and looks good. Although, if you're looking for an all in one streaming multimedia player, this might not be for you.

    Very fast loading times.

    Good picture quality.

Easy to set up and operate.

USB port for multiple media playback.

    FLAC HIGH-RES playback.

    No WIFI (Hard wired only)

No built in video apps or App Store.

    Solid no-frills 4K UHD Blu-Ray Player

In a time where it feels like every video device on the market is capable of playing Netflix, and other streaming services, LG has chosen to make this 4K UHD BluRay player simply a... 4K UHD BluRay player! This is a no frills, does one thing and only one thing player. It also does this one thing fairly well. Insert a disc, wait a couple seconds, your in the movie's menu. Hit play, watch and enjoy. It is very quick and simple to use. LG has gone with a very clean and simple box layout. Just the essential buttons on the front for play, rewind, eject, stop, fast forward. There is also a USB port for plugging in a USB drive to display videos of photos. I found the internal video player supports most video files. mp4, mkv, mpeg2, avi, it plays them all with ease. It does not however, support PGS subtitles, this is limited to the blu-ray disc drive only. You need SRT files for such playback if you are one to be looking to play these types of files and subtitles.

Video quality seems to be on par with the UHD standard. Colors and HDR playback looked great and well presented on my LG C8 OLED. LG has made a huge omission however by not supporting the Dolby Vision standard with this player. Given my TV supports Dolby Vision along with HDR10 (and some others) I am only able to watch HDR10 tracks from my DV bluray discs. This will not worry most people as most discs today are in the HDR10 format and most TVs still do not offer this support. For myself personally, this is a massive oversight and this player will not be staying in my main AV cabinet and will likely make it's way to a secondary bedroom TV.

My other gripe with this unit is the power LED. When off, the LED is red. Great, I have no issues with this. However, when powered on, this LED goes green!!! I have an open media cabinet and when watching a movie with all of the lights out, and with the infinite blacks of my OLED, to have a green light illuminating below is ridiculous. They should have omitted the "ON" light and have it completely off. LG did this with their TV, soundbars, etc... why not with this player?? Most people won't care about this either, but to any videpphile and home theater enthusiast, this is a complete deal-breaker. Granted, tape, or a closed cabinet fixes the problem as well, but annoying none-the less.

There is an ethernet port on the back for updating firmware. This unit does not have wireless so you need to hard wire to update it, or, download the updated from LGs website, put it on USB drive and plug in a USB drive to the front port.

Overall this is a solid, no frills player. It does what it is supposed to do, and does it decently. This is no reference grade, 100% color accurate player, this lacks more advanced features such as Dolby Vision. Lacks wifi capability and has an annoying green LED light that is always on when watching movies. For these reasons I will likely not recommend this to any of my friends as most of them are theater / quality nuts like I am. If you are on a budget, don't aim for reference grade anything, and just want something simple and overall solid, this is a great player for you.

Needs more options like select button left right up and downs button. Just in case the customers can't find their remote. LG customer since 2014. : -(

Great No Frills 4K HDR Blu-Ray Player

I had to do this review in two stages 1) with a 1080p 3D TV and 2) 4k HDR tv.

I think it is great that LG kept the 3D functionality with the 4K setup as it is a really good blu-ray player for 1080p quality. I'm assuming that the market is moving towards limiting the need for DVD, Blu-Ray, and 4K Blu-Ray players as the technologically advances it is backwards compatible. However, 3D died in 2016 (no new tv's have sold with 3D feature) thank you for giving me hope or just rubbing it in that is dead?

For 3D purposes I used my 7 year old LG 55LW5300 3D TV Full HD, @ 24p frame rate. TV Still works great and was made even better by this new blu-ray player.

Watching Avatar 3D definitely noticed a crisper picture and better motion versus the Panasonic 3D player that was rated best at the time and still using today.

The LG UBK80 is very basic in its use...disc content only. Your TV is already smart if its a 4K from the past year or so and to have a disc device smart seems a little redundant as there are better options if you are looking for smart capability.

The UI is the same as the cheapest LG DVD player you can buy, or the Blu-ray Player that I had 8 years ago. That's not necessarily a bad thing as it's easy to navigate and very simple to get to settings. You can get customize the features to do 24p if the disc and tv support it and a few other settings.

It does have a LAN port so the Blu-ray online features can be accessed. Pretty much the only purpose is for the previews. Blu-rays have a neat ability to update previews, so when watching an older movie you can actually watch a new preview for a yet released movie or other ad content relative to the today date. May be able to do a firmware update as well didn't look closely enough. But not necessary as it also has a usb port.

Hooking it up to an LG 55U6100 4K HDR TV it had superb picture quality. At this point only been streaming 4K HDR content and I can definitely see a difference in it, no to mention for me lately Netflix sound has been a bit off, and so I am also getting the higher fidelity sound and higher quality picture. I used Hacksaw Ridge for my content and I did have to tweak the settings just a bit on the tv as it was a little too dark for my taste in a couple scenes. A group of men are sitting in a circle in a mortar crater, its at night, and in the distance are burning fires in barrells. The flames while not in focus drawing attention to the men, doesn't bloom around those images. Its hard to see the mens faces, but the whites of their eyes show up and the reflection of light from the sweat and oil on their skin. It is a really dark scene, one used for tests such as these.

Now, most of what I spoke about has to do with the TV, but because of reading other reviews about this TV, I know the Blu-Ray player is allowing it to reach its potential.

For the price this is a great Blu-Ray Player for both 4K HDR and 1080p/3D viewing.

I don't think you can go wrong with this choice.

And if its a smart functionality you want then I'd suggest going with a dedicated player, you will get a better experience. As the saying goes, "right tool for the right job."

A quick note on size its a bit bigger and thicker than I would have thought it would be this far into having 4K Blu-ray on the market, but it could be a cooling feature for more air movement. I never heard the disc spinning in quite scenes, but my ears may have been buzzing still from the sound of war.

This player is a base model feature wise. No bells or whistles, No clock or digital display, no apps or video programs for streaming. It comes with a nice remote. So simple Grandma could set it up and use it. It's very slim and compact. It doesn't take up much space which is nice. Great disc-playing machine

The LG - UBK80 4K Ultra HD Hi-Res Audio Blu-Ray Player is a great disc player that delivers superb quality regardless of the media type you are playing. This includes standard DVDs on a 1080p TV but it makes much more sense to purchase this unit if you have a 4K TV and 4K Blu-Ray discs.

It should be noted that although this device has an ethernet port, it only seems to be for firmware updates and it does not have WiFi, built-in apps, or any other “smart” features. It is purely a disc playing device which actually makes sense since most 4K TVs already have “smart” features and it would be redundant to have these things built-in to this device. It would have unnecessarily driven up the price so I would say leaving these sorts of features out isn’t really a negative aspect of this product.

Disc loading times seem to be about what I expected: it’s not lightning quick but it’s also not unbearably slow. The UI is pretty basic but it gets the job done so it isn’t really a negative and it actually makes the device relatively easy to operate.

There is a USB port on the front of the device which can be used to play digital content but the main function of this machine seems to be playing actual physical discs. Since this is the case, it is best suited for those with a large library of discs already or someone who is planning on starting a large library of disc-based media. If this sounds like you, I highly recommend this product and hope you enjoy the sights and sounds as much as I do!

Sony ubp-x800m2 Sets the Bar High for 4k Players

This is no ordinary 4k bluray player, this is beyond that. The Sony ubp-x800m2 4k UHD bluray player is superb in all facets of 4k and more. It is a great addition to any entertainment system and will perform amazing 4k upscaling. The picture produced by the Sony x800m2 4k player is pretty much flawless and the sound has two options including a second audio HDMI. Of course it has built in Wifi and an Ethernet connections for additional options.

    • Here is the list of 4K movies I have watched so far on the Sony x800m2: X-men Days of Future Past, Avengers Infinity War, Mission Impossible Fallout, Spiderman Homecoming, Matrix and Spiderman into the Spider-Verse. I really wanted to get a feel for how the Sony x800m2 lays out how good/bad films on a 4k HDR picture, sound and overall movie experience.

    • When I held the Sony x800m2 in its packaging, it was on the heavy side for sure. It was about 10 lbs. Then I unpacked the 4k player and found it to be heavier (8.4 lbs) than previous 4k players and bluray that I have had. That is great sign of quality because the 4k player is built with a special “frame and beam” construction to it. This is why the weight is significant. The rigid frame helps to eliminate even the least bit of playback noise including the actual 4k disc drive (which is specially built getting rid of vibration). I was impressed as none of the movies I watched produced any vibration or noise. A big plus when watching a movie because no one wants to hear the disc spin or any other slight mechanical movement.

    • This Sony x800m2 is pretty big. It is the biggest I have ever owned. The opening for the shelf is 17 1/4 inches, which is pretty standard on shelf openings in my experience. The Sony 4k player just fits (17 inches). But the large 4k player is probably as big as it is because it helps to disperse the weight and balance. The dimensions are Height: 2.25inches, Width: 17inches and Depth: 10.5inches. It should fit most shelf units.

    • The connections on the back of the Sony 4k x800m2 are a follows: Coaxial digital out, two HDMI 4k connections (one dedicated for audio), and ethernet connection and it is also has Wifi. One missing connection I believe is a Digital Optical out. Most media components will accept Digital Optical ports so I wonder why Sony didn’t include it on the 4k player? Well they did include the Coaxial Digital out which is nice because they didn’t have the Digital Optical connection. The dedicated audio HDMI is great to produce better sound. When both HDMI ports are plugged in, the HDMI connect to video and the other to audio. Does this make a difference? Absolutely the sound improves. Do you have to do it? No, the sound still has great playback from the HDMI cable for the one slot labeled video/audio. I am very happy with the sound range of the Sony x800m2 just through the one HDMI connection.

    • The picture on the Sony x800m2 is outstanding with HDR! The HDR options are HDR10 and Dolby Vision. The HDR10 option is 100x brighter than a picture without it. It really releases colors that are brilliant and enjoyable to watch. The Dolby Vision option has deeper darks and explosive highlights and rich color. If I had to choose one or the other, I would choose Dolby Vision because it really brings to life the picture quality that is hard to match. (The 4k HDR TV needs to have Dolby Vision option too). I uploaded a picture of Doc Octopus from Spiderman into the Spider-verse in Dolby Vision. The picture doesn't do it justice, but in person the picture is honestly amazing.

    • Now the Sony 4k x800m2 has amazing upscaling on regular blurays. The picture is upscaled to about 4k level with the bluray. The picture really does look great and sounds great too. 24p true cinema and 4k 60p help the upscaling go to another level. The upscaling on this 4k player is the best I have seen. I was really surprised it looked so good.

    • Bluetooth is available on the 4K player for Bluetooth Headphones and/or Bluetooth speakers. When you want to watch a movie and keep the sound at a minimum, use the Bluetooth feature that allows you to hook up your Bluetooth Headphones. You alone can listen to the 4k movie playing. Also if you have Bluetooth speakers, you can hook up them to the 4k player with Bluetooth. There is also a feature to help your Bluetooth sound better. The LDAC transmits 3x data more than a regular Bluetooth. Just another great selection on this 4k player.

    • There is a USB drive on the front panel of the 4k player. Uses can be for stored pictures, media and films. Just another way this Sony 4k x800m2 rises above the rest.

    • Some of the listening options that can be played back are Dolby Digital, DTS-HD, Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. Each of these settings are excellent but you may prefer one or the others according how the sound comes out of your speakers. Dolby Atmos provides an immersive sound that is object based that moves around you, even from the ceiling (if you have speakers there). Dolby Digital has been around awhile but in my opinion I think it is still the best. The sounds also move around seamlessly through the speakers back and forth in a 5.1 setup. DTS provides a adaptive sound in 3D through your speakers. The best way to pick the right coding setup for you, is to try them all.

Overall, the Sony x800m2 is outstanding! No noise vibration, a heavy chassis, upscaling blurays to 4k 60p, HDR with Dolby Vision, Bluetooth, and built in quality components make this Sony player an incredible step up in 4k players.

    looks nice

I read a lot of reviews on this player and it sounded great. Got it on sale which made it even better, otherwise I would have bought a different one for cast. Dimensions and design match perfectly with an Onkyo receiver.

First time I played it for a few minutes just to test the connections it froze. Second time I played it to watch a full movie it did fine, but while watching the extras, it had been playing for about 3 hours and maybe it overheated because it froze again. After just these two uses I'm starting to lose confidence. This was to replace a very low end Sony blu ray player that quit working after just 2 years. Not sure if Sony is as good of quality as they used to be.

    Good features

It was easy to set up, however I wish Sony would provide better guidance about the PCM setting. We sold a inexpensive Sony Blu-ray player thinking that a higher end model wouldn’t have the same issues. We had rented countless movies only not to be able to watch them because we were unable to hear voices, only background noise. After googling and reading numerous articles, many of which I had no idea what they were talking about as I’m not an avid audiophile, I discovered the importance of the PCM setting. Other than that, performs exceptionally good!!!

The Ultimate Blu-Ray, SACD, and DVD Audio Player

This fantastic Sony product allowed me to consolidate two dvd players into one. Previously I was using another Sony Blu-Ray to take care of dvds and SACD audio and a Samsung Dvd player for my DVD Audio collection. Now I have one that does it all and at a very reasonable price and one less piece of AV sitting on the shelf.

We bought this as an add on to our Sony Bravia OLED. This absolutely stands up to each other with the 4KHD. Hard to understand how we were watching things in the past. This is a BEAST! Sound quality is as good as the theaters!

Amazing 3D, Great Picture and Audio Outputs

I have been looking to upgrade my old blue ray player (PS3) to a newer one for some time now. I decided to go with this player as it also plays 4k bluy rays. I was very impressed with the easy of use, simple menu navigation and amazing 3D picture quality. Keep in mind that I only have my Playstation 3 blue ray player to compare it to so my review will be based on that comparison.

::: Interactive Operating System (IOS) :::

The iOS is very sleek and simple which I personally love. After having to navigate the PS3 menu and long load times, it was a welcome change to have a simple turn on and launch option. The streaming services are very limited however since I am mostly going to use it for 3D movies I am ok with that.

    ::: 3D/4K Picture / Sound Quality :::

The picture is amazing along with the ability to modify the settings to match your expectations with newer tvs. I enjoy the 2 HDMI outputs in the back to be able to dedicate one for video and other for audio. This way it is a clean band for each. The 4K looks great to the naked eye, I do not have any professional tools to test the colors however looks great with no tears. The 3D quality is amazing, there are no tears, slowness, delays, freezing or saturation in colors. I am probably one of the few that still love 3D so am extremely happy with how this players handles 3D picture. It is very smooth, the active lens glasses that I use has no trouble interpreting the picture. I would strongly recommend this player if you are one of the forgotten 3D enthusiasts like myself!

Overall love this player for the 3D quality and sleekness. Keep in mind that I only have my Playstation 3 blue ray player to compare it too so most of these features are very impressive compared to that.

    Above average, but not amazing.

It's better than say a GPX, Craig, Sylvania, etc brand, but not as good as a Sony. I got it solely because they were sold out of the Sony's at my various department stores. Still, for the price, features, etc there's really no valid complaints. It's just one can't help but compare it to the competition and so they simply end up falling into second place, but then that's hardly bad considering all of the available choices. Note, if you get the DP132 and the DP132H and do a side-by-side comparison, there's 2 things that might be of interest to some not mentioned by the company. Ok, 3 technically as they do note and tell you about the upscaling HDMI port, that's why there's a cost difference. The other 2 things are an ever slight size difference. Check the specs too on Best Buy's site. The HDMI version is approx one inch wider. Not a big deal, but it is a difference. The other actually may be a big deal to some. Again, check specs and pics on Best Buy's site to verify, but they each come with a different remote. Very similar design and button layout, but the remote that comes with the HDMI version is actually surprisingly larger. Not huge, but put side-by-side with the remote included with the standard version from LG and trust me, you'll most definitely instantaneously notice quite the difference between the two. Night and day difference really. The remote with the basic version feels like what you'd expect to come with a cheap branded DVD player. You know? It'll work alright, but definitely not preferable for most. Whereas the remote given with the HDMI version feels like what you'd expect and want a DVD remote, or even a TV remote, to feel like. It just feels right. Without a doubt if getting a LG DVD player get the HDMI version if only for the remote, that alone justifies the price difference between the two.

    Best bang for your buck!

Is it the best picture quality? No.

Will the extra features blow you away? No.

Is it a cheap DVD player that’s easy to install and gets the job done if you still have a few old dvds you watch? Absolutely!

The only issue I had during set up ended up being the need to reset my TV. Thankfully not a serious issue however I was extremely disappointed in Best Buy because they refused any type of service beyond me bringing the computer to them or paying excessively steep charges. Very glad to have a wonderful cable provider to swing by the house and took care of everything which is especially appreciate it since I was a cancer patient who is an able to drive I can’t leave the house nor do I have the budget to pay for geeks quad. If you have issues with this DVD player and a smart tv, save time just reset your tv and try again!

This was a perfect purchase for me. All I wanted was a simple 1080 dvd with hdmi output. This one ended up being perfect.

No menus to navigate through except what’s on the dvd you are playing. I am not a big fan of all the extras that come on the big ticket players. It also integrated perfectly with the LG tv it was connected to...and the remote works on both right out of the box. Couldn’t be happier.

    Won't play TELARC DVD-Video discs

I have some Telarc DVDs that are 2-sided, One side is DVD-AUDIO, the other side is DVD VIDEO/DVD ROM. This Panasonic model will NOT play either one. For example, TELARC-DVDA70541 Tchaikovsky 1812 Overture, The liner notes say "A DVD-Audio player is required to play the high-resolution surround and stereo programs on this disc. This disc will NOT play on a CD player. This disc also contains compatible DVD-VIDEO programs." The disc can play in dts surround and dolby digital surround. As expected, trying to play the DVD-Audio side results in the DVD displaying a message to flip the DVD over and play the DVD Video side. Done. Guess what? "Cannot read disc." Even after firmware update. The disc is not damaged, it is in pristine condition, and these aren't cheap. My old cheapie Sony played the DVD-Video side. R.I.P. If you have a collection of discs like this I suggest you keep shopping. I am forced to decide if I recommend this item. CONDITIONAL yes. NO if you have a collection of discs like mine.

My only problem is with the remote. The arrow buttons are too close to other buttons. If I’m not looking at the remote there is a good chance I may accidentally hit the wrong button. Other than that, I love this player!!

Panasonic DP-UB420P-K Blue ray disc player

I had recently bought a 70" 4K TV for the house and I also bought the Panasonic blue ray player for it and it works great. What I hadn't noticed was that this player is 3D compatible. Well I have an older LG 47" in the den that is 3D and my 3D player had quit working some time ago and so I wound up buying another one of these for that TV and now I can watch 3D video's again. I hope they keep this model around for a long time to come.

It works, but the disc door doesn't close fully

This replaced a Sony unit that was hit by a surge through the Ethernet or HDMI cables from the cable box. It ran every thing well for five + years. I wanted the same unit, but it wasn't being made. This one is close to it. This one has a door that folds down when the disc is loaded. There is a good size gap along the top of the door and the top of the drive box. Quality control was bad on this unit. The unit box was not packed in another box. The box looked like it had slid from one side to the other in the truck. I don't expect this one to last as long.

our first one crapped out (it did not have the internet capabilities) the blue ray quit working. around Christmas we got another one with internet/wifi abilities and the blue ray on this one is getting glitchy, freezing, and no longer finding certain mobile hotspots. I have kept software up to date and it hasn’t dropped or anything. We will definitely not be purchasing another. It was also expensive for a poor quality product.

The current model we have BDP-s6700. We may not even buy another Sony. Our Samsung player lasted yeaaaars with streaming abilities and little kids watching dvds/blue ray all the time.

I am reviewing the Sony - BDP-S6700 Streaming 4K Upscaling Wi-Fi Built-In Blu-ray Player. Although I have access to Netflix, Amazon and such I did not want to stop viewing my dvd collection. This is the easiest player to work with and the image is perfect. It is small and light and includes its own remote. I printed the image with the price before going to the store and although the price was higher in-store, the lower price in my online copy was honored. I consider that good service. If you are searching for an inexpensive, quality Blu-ray player; this is it.

    Good, Basic Blu-ray Player

Good player and haven't had any issues. Some basic things to keep in mind are that the steaming functions are very basic with no ability to add more apps, it only has Ethernet, no WiFi, and the tray could use some improvement.

The tray has only 1 spot to reach in and grab the disc which often leads to popping the disc out some and sliding it around before you actually get a hold of it. It works best if your finger is small enough to reach through the middle of the disc and also grab the edge where it is designed to be grabbed. Not recommended for those with larger fingers.

As for the apps, it only has 6 and no ability to download or add more. The 6 apps are Vudu, Prime Video, YouTube, Netflix, Pandora, and Napster.

Overall, it's a good player and I would recommend it. It's perfect for my computer room.

    It has DLNA

After reading the box and the owners manual, I still was not sure if this unit has the DLNA feature, which allows it to play videos stored on the hard drive on your home network. I know that the Sony unit which is directly competing to it does not. Still not sure, I bought it on spec to test it. I was pleased to find that it does, despite the owners manual not saying that it does. The owners manual says that you have to use proprietary LG software for file sharing, but the manual is WRONG. At least, with Windows 10 DNLA works out-of-the-box without downloading and installing any additional software. The manual and box should make this clear without having to guess.

On the other hand, it does not have as many streaming video apps as the competition, but it does have the necessary ones: Netflix and Hulu, as well as others. But if one wants a multitude of apps, add a Roku Stick. The Roku Stick, on the other hand, cannot add DLNA to a Blu-ray player missing that feature.

It is also smaller than its competitor from Korea, if space is important

    Great DVD Player!!!

I'm really happy with this dvd player. All the buttons work perfectly, unlike the Sylvania 13" dvd player. I need to use the remote to make the functions work on that one. With the Insignia 10" dvd player, it works fine through all the functions with out the remote. I suppose I'll use the remote eventually, but for now, just haven't had a reason to. If Insignia ever gets around to making a 13 inch dvd player, I'll be very interested. One more thing, The Insignia also has a memory to return to the place I last viewed. A low battery warning too. I really like those features. I'm very happy with this dvd player! A satisfied customer!!!

    Great Player

Needed to replace older cd/dvd player for portable use. Liked at the offerings from all of the other stores (ie Walmart, and local electronic stores) and although those unit was a few dollars more the quality and features of the Insignia 10” player made a worlds difference. The feel of the unit and the controls are far better than the others

    Beautiful Picture; Limited Features

The LG UBK90 is a worthy successor to LG's previous player, the UP970. It is Dolby Vision-compatible out of the box and should be an excellent 4K Blu-ray player for most users. However, it's missing a few features that some A/V enthusiasts would enjoy.

    - Easy set up. Simply connect an HDMI cable (make sure it's a Certified Premium cable), plug it into a power outlet, and then follow the on-screen instructions.

    - Very fast and responsive. Discs are fast to load and the unit responds to commands from the remote quickly.

    - Dual HDMI outputs. HDMI 2 is reserved for audio-only output. Perfect for those with older soundbars or receivers that can't pass through Dolby Vision or HDR signals.

    - Beautiful picture quality. I've tried several UHD Blu-rays, 3D Blu-rays, regular Blu-rays, and even some old DVDs. All look very nice. For UHD Blu-rays, the player automatically engages Dolby Vision or HDR10 depending on the format of the disc. Unlike some other 4K Blu-ray players, this player supports Dolby Vision out of the box -- you don't have to wait for any firmware updates.

    - Quiet operation. A common complaint of the previous UP970 model was that the disc drive sounded like a jet engine. The UBK90 has been extremely quiet during all discs that I've played.

    - Solid build quality. It's not as sturdy or hefty as some competing models, but it feels noticeably heavier and more solidly built than the UP970.

    - The remote control is lightweight and comfortable to hold.

    - There is no "subtitle" button on the remote. If you want to turn on subtitles during movie playback, you'll need to press the "info" button and then turn on subtitles via an on-screen menu.

    - The user interface design of this player is archaic - like something out of the early 2000s. It works, but I personally think it's time for LG to add a bit more polish.

    - The settings menu is extremely limited. There are no advanced audio/video settings. No Bluetooth connectivity for wireless headphones. No obvious way to stream media from a home network.

    - There is no advanced playback information while watching a disc. Some other Blu-ray players are capable of displaying detailed video/audio codec information as well as bitrate during disc playback. Likely not a big deal for average users, but advanced users might miss having this information available.

    - Only two streaming services - Netflix and YouTube - are available. It doesn't appear that anymore will be added.

    - There is a known issue with Dolby Vision over HDMI on LG OLED TVs. During certain movies, black levels (particularly the black bars above and below the picture) will appear as a murky grey rather than perfect black. Usually, the black levels will flicker back-and-forth between perfect black and grey during the entire movie. I tried to watch The Matrix 4K disc (with Dolby Vision) on the UBK90 connected to my LG OLED C6 TV. The elevated black levels were so distracting that I had to stop watching. Unfortunately, there is no way to force the UBK90 into HDR10 mode for discs that have Dolby Vision, which would solve the black level issue (at the expense of Dolby Vision). So in order to watch The Matrix, I had to reconnect an older 4K Blu-ray player that does not support Dolby Vision. Some discs do not have this issue: Black Panther and Saving Private Ryan appeared to play in Dolby Vision with perfect black levels. Regardless, LG has acknowledged that this is a problem with its OLED TVs, but still has not fixed it. It needs to be fixed ASAP.

If you're looking for a no-frills 4K Blu-ray player to go with your new Dolby Vision-enabled TV, this is a great option. However, competing models in the same price range offer more advanced features and more streaming services that some users will enjoy. Perhaps most importantly, LG needs to address the elevated Dolby Vision black level issue via firmware updates ASAP. Otherwise, the benefits of many Dolby Vision Blu-ray discs will be lost on owners of LG OLED TVs.

    Full Five Stars

Picture quality is excellent as I suspected it would be. Very, very nice. The experience is more like looking out a window rather than watching a video display. The 4K movies I watched and the upscaling job the player did on regular Blu-ray discs was top notch in my opinion. Regular DVDs I watched were not very satisfying however and I have to believe this was due to the source material rather than any deficiency of the UBK90.

The remote control has a number of buttons made of translucent rubber, but are not backlit. In this day and age I find it puzzling that manufacturers of televisions and source hardware do not provide remote controls with back lighting. A lot of my TV watching is in a room with no lights or low ambient light and quite often I want to pause or “rewind” programming or perform some other function and I often struggle to find the correct button on the remote. This LG remote does provide some tactile clues to help you navigate in the dark, but I would still prefer full backlighting. The remote takes only one AAA battery - seeing this in a remote is a first for me, and the battery is provided.

An HDMI cable is not provided with the player. The power cord is attached to the chassis and is not removable - this might be inconvenient for some installs when swapping out equipment with concealed wiring.

The front panel controls on the unit are basic: power, drawer open, play/pause, and stop. The buttons are raised symbols that are impossible to tell apart by feel and none of them are illuminated. There is a faint green light on the front panel to indicate the power is on. I miss the old days when there was a digital counter on the front panel, but on this LG there is no display of any type. There is a front panel USB port to allow you to connect other devices with content on them.

The unit makes very little noise when running. The top of the case is flat which makes it possible to stack hardware - some makers have had case tops that were not flat and I would find that annoying if I wanted to sit something on top of the player.

Provided apps are only Netflix and YouTube. This is probably of no real concern since most 4K televisions are probably smart TVs with a multitude of built-in apps. Menus are easy to navigate, unit responds to remote commands crisply, setup is easy, wi-fi connection and firmware updating is simple.

This player supports a wide variety of optical disc formats and file formats…I can’t believe there are any more out there that are not on the list of supported types, nor did I even know this many existed.

The LG UBK90 is a moderately priced Ultra-HD Blu-ray player that should satisfy most anyone looking to update their hardware to 4K capability. The only thing that disappointed me was the lack of remote illumination, but that is probably the case with 90+ percent of current remote controls, so I don’t feel right dinging this player a full star for that.

Pretty good 4 K blu ray player

I've had the LG UBK90 for about two weeks now, and so far it has done a very nice job on playing regular blu rays and 4K blu rays, not to mention listening to 3 or 4 cd's.

My LG is hooked up using both of the HDMI out's on the back of the player. HDMI #1 goes directly to my 2017 LG 65" B7 Oled 4K tv and HDMI #2 goes into my Marantz SR7008 for the audio. My Marantz is about 5 years old, so it will not pass 4K signals through the receiver to the tv. If you have a newer receiver, and it allows the 4K signal to pass through your receiver, then you'll only need to use one HDMI cable from the LG which would go into your receiver, then from your receiver another HDMI cable to your 4K tv

The LG UBK90 unit is pretty basic. There is not any type of digital display to show movie progress. Something that not necessarily missed, but very strange to see a player without any display. On the front of the unit, there are buttons for eject, play/pause, stop, and power off/on. Next to the off/on button there in one tiny light that will glow red when the power is off, and green when the power is on. You can see the green light in my first photo. And, next to the red/green light there is an uncovered USB input.

The rear is pretty bare bones as well. LAN port to connect to the internet. You can connect to the internet wirelessly as well. HDMI #1 out and HDMI #2 out and optical audio out. So, since this is a pretty bare bones 4K player, it is very simple to hook up. But, my player came with just a tiny sheet of paper for the manual. Not much info on it. I'd recommend going to LG's website and downloading the owners manual. It's 61 pages long and goes into much greater detail on the player.

This LG will play 4K blu rays, standard blu rays and dvd's. It will up convert standard blu rays to near 4K quality and does it pretty good. It will also up convert dvd's, but I did not try that as I no longer have any dvd's. I was pretty disappointed to find that the LG UBK90 will not play SACD's or DVD-audio discs. The player is 3D capable which is nice, but my Oled is not, so I could not test that out to see how well it does 3D playback. While I use my Roku to stream content, the LG is again bare bones in this department. It only has Netflix and Youtube. Youtube did very well at streaming, and I don't have Netflix to test that app. Hopefully in the near future more apps will be available for this LG unit.

A big plus for this player is that it supports BOTH Dolby Vision and HDR10. Dolby Vision will come in the near future in a firmware update. HDR (High Dynamic Range) reproduces a greater dynamic range of brightness levels, bringing greater contrast & wider color spectrum to your 4K tv. Go into a Best Buy store, and just about every tv displayed, especially the Oled's, will show the difference between HDR on and off. When on, the colors and contrast will blow you away. Almost like comparing a black and white tv to a color one. The HDR is more important in my opinion than the 4K resolution.

The remote control is not back lit. Something that almost all consumers want, but the manufactures don't listen. I'd willingly pay $5.00 to $10.00 more for something if it included a back lit remote. The remote is pretty standard, but something I found neat, was that it only takes one AAA battery instead of two batteries. One AAA battery comes with the player by the way.

Overall, I'm giving this LG UBK90 4 stars. Personally for the regular price of $299.00 I think it's overprice by maybe $75.00 or so. It's a pretty bare bones 4K player, but it plays 4K content very well, and up converts standard blu's very well too. Now we just need that firmware update for the Dolby Vision. Overall, I'd recommend the LG UBK90 4K player.

    The Theater Experience

I love movies. Movies are escapism for a lot of us. When I purchase a movie for my collection, that means that I REALLY enjoyed it and want to experience just like I did when I watched it in the theater.

I purchase physical copies of movies knowing that they come with the digital copy. Digital copies are great for on the go or for quick access when using a smart TV. However, digital streaming relies on the internet and a strong connection. With physical copies, I simply place the movie in the player and watch.

When I placed John Wick Chapter Two into my LG 4K Ultra HD player, I had no idea of what I was missing. The LG Player enhances and compliments my sound bar in a way that I didn’t know was possible. It was as if I was hearing and watching my movies for the first time.

Movies are delivered in a sharp clarity that you’d expect from a 4K movie, and again, I have to mention that it communicates a rich Dolby sound that impresses me with each movie I put in. Even standard Blu-Ray movies are incredible to watch on this LG Player.

The design is slim and modern with tactile buttons on the face of the player and a USB port in case you want to share your own videos. YouTube and Netflix are able to be streamed through the LG Player as well in case you just want to utilize the player as a movie hub. However, you’ll have to upgrade your Netflix subscription in order to enjoy their 4K offerings.

If you have been putting off getting a 4K player like I had then this player will prove that the wait was worth it.

    Excellent player!

Great uhd bluray player. Its silent, doesn't have any problems playing uhd blurays (no noise nor skips or other problems). It supports HDR and Dolby vision out of the box! There was a firmware update right away, so always check and keep it updated. I tried a couple of uhd blurays and dolby vision played fine and the blacks where on point. The interface is a little bit dated, however its usable and works fine. It also has 2 hdmi out ports, just in case someone has an older audio receiver with no hdmi 2.0, so you can still output dolby truehd or dts master hd to it. Video quality is great, upscaling of regular blurays is great too! I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to jump into the dolby vision bandwagon without paying an arm and leg like other brands.

    Excellent, with caveat

I bought this player mainly for dolby vision playback, which the xbox one x cannot do. This LG player can play dolby vision content automatically. Some of the players at this price range from other companies required going in the menus to change to dolby vision, which is undesirable. This is a bare bones, good player. The menus are basic, with limited settings; but for this purpose that is good with me. I already have multiple stream players and devices, I bought this just for the 4k bluray playback.

I found the quality to be virtually identical to the xbox, but this one does noticeably better with the discs. It more quickly seeks a scene, and some discs that had issues with the xbox (star wars 4k uhd movies) had no problems whatsoever with this LG unit.

The one caveat that LG needs to address with a firmware update is the lack of ability to disable CEC. I have a entry level, but new Denon AVR which has most of my devices connected, and this LG hijacks the entire system with it's CEC. The player randomly turns on and asks the AVR to change the source to Blu-ray, and the player will sit at the home screen pinging the AVR with more cec requests. I don't know why it turns itself on like this, but it causes issues that none of my other connected devices do. It is unrealistic for me to disable CEC on my avr and/or TV. This problem is easily fixed though with a CEC-LESS adapter, buyable on online stores. LG needs to add a setting to disable CEC in case of compatibility problems such as this. I notice that even with my cec-less adapter, the player still randomly powers on sometimes, but now it cannot ping my TV/AVR, so it's essentially solved for me, and even better if I can figure out how to keep it from randomly powering on.

I’ve watch 2 dvds on one charge, then run it on a device I have. The only disappointment is that price recently has dropped on it making me feel slightly skunked.

Sony DVD Player - DVP-SR210P - It works great

First I really liked Best Buy and the pickup process was so organized and easy - I just had to buy some other stuff. I bought this Sony DVP-SR210P based on its reviews, features, reputation and my past history with SONY products. It replaced a Panasonic DVD Player that really lasted a long time and worked great. The Player has worked on everything I have put in it. Original Disks, Copied DVD's in various formats, and even damaged old DVD's. The display is amazing, must be 1080p. It was a 5 minute Plug and Play install. It is a Ultra Slim Design, and pretty small. Not good to set other devices on. I am very careful with putting disks in and only use the Remote to Open / Close. I would think twice if you have a bunch of kids playing DVD's. They will break it. Tender disc tray.

It went good after the fact I had to come back the 2nd time (45 min drive) to get video cables for it! I will send two pictures! I had to come back because, I had sound but no color or I had color but no sound! It would have been nice if I had it the first time. Oh well it’s ok!

    Perfect for my needs

As my old DVD player went south , I headed to Best Buy for a new one and a laptop as well . The integral part of my decision to shop here at this location is that every associate / sales rep never makes me feel like an idiot as I am not tech savvy and never pressures me into high ticket items . They are knowledgeable , respectful and very helpful as to finding an item that you want to fit my budget . The DVD player is a perfect match for my budget and living arrangement . Easily programmable remote with batteries inclusive in purchase as well . Win - win .

A little shoddy, could be better

The DVD Player isn't too bad but is shoddly made. The controls for the DVD Slot takes several times to open and close, I had a large fan about 4 feet to the right of the Player and when I would turn the DVD Player on the fan would start working as well. I would have to manually to off the fan. I have since moved the fan. It still works but not as well as I hoped.

    Does its job

Sure glad I kept the remote from my old one (on the right)! Apparently Panasonic intends this for the kid's room-very little kids-you know, with tiny little hands! And the old one has tv volume buttons!

I found setting it up a little confusing, but it does what it's supposed to do with no bs!

    A very, VERY, simple player

I thought I wanted a simple Blu ray player. And this indeed delivered. Delivered great 4k quality. The menu is lightweight with no bloatware. Panasonic commits to bringing updates to it over time. Not flashy in anyway.

Unfortunately, it was so simple it didn't fit my use case here at home. I wasn't able to use it to access my digital copies of my Blu ray collection. So I am upgrading to the magnolia version of this one.

    Totally worth it!

Wow, this 4k player is awesome! Standard DVD's are upscaled, Blu Ray are also upscaled and 4k movies are like your right there on set in real life! Excellent price plus I had a coupon, this player can do it all, no need to spend way more than you need to, this is it for me. Pictures included in review. (Some say the remote is way to small, it's the exact same size as my new 4k tv. I have zero issues with the remote size)

    Bang for your bucks!!!!!!!!

Money well spent! For the price I paid for this player it provides just what needed. The picture quality and Dolby atmos puts you definitely into theater mode. The only tiny thing I don’t like about this is the fact it doesn’t have the digital audio output it just have the orange optical. And yes it’s just basic! No Netflix and YouTube here but who needs that anyway. I have plenty of devices to replace for those apps. But all in all I love this player so far and I forgot to say how quiet the player is not like that loud garbage disposal Sony.

    Great product!

This works great. Besides just being an UHD Blu-Ray player, the front USB port will also work with external hard drives. I rip my DVD and Blu-Ray collection down to hard drive for convenience, and I can attach my USB hard drive to the front port and watch the DVDs and BluRays through this player. The USB port on my TV will *not* support USB hard drives, only flash drives, so this was a nice discovery that this player works with USB hard drives.

Excellent! No need for fancy features. This works.

I do not need a fancy player with features my tv or streamers already have. I just need a box to play a disc and pass the signal to my tv and sound system unfiltered and unchanged. This worked perfectly for my HDR10+ and Dolby Atmos, and etc etc. No need to spend money on extra "features" when I only want a disc read and data passed to TV (unfiltered and unchanged). Worked perfectly with my 2021 "top of the line" Samsung model. I recommend. This review is after 3 months of use, and well evaluated.

    Very user-friendly.

I was very impressed by the size of the screen and all the ports that can be used to watch a video or see a bunch of pictures. Or whatever your needs are with entertainment. I say it's user-friendly because my mother has Alzheimer's and she's able to use this Sylvania DVD player portable. It has very good sound quality. It's not heavy so that you can take it from place to place. Buttons are very clear and understandable. It also comes with a remote that is very useful so you don't have to keep getting up and down. I've had another one that was smaller but this one outshines them all.

Check your item before leaving store!

Bought this item online & picked up at store. First problem, they gave me a previously returned portable DVD player! That should have never happened especially with Covid still happening in our area! I could hear the player sliding around in the box, there was no packaging around the items, the headphones looked like they had been used. Had to go back the next day & exchange for one that was not returned before. The new one was nicely packaged & untouched, player works great, quality is not great like blu ray but it does it’s job! Also the player looks different than it does online, first 2 pictures are of the returned player. The rest are of the new player.

    So far seems good

I just got it in the mail and tested it. First thing is packaging could have been better; they legit sent it in it’s original box! The neighbors could have stolen it if they noticed what is was; mail man left it in plain site. Box was a little damaged, could have easily been stolen or fell from box; the item so far does seem ok. The screen is huge so that’s great; picture a good size laptop. The sound is great with the DVD I tested. The downside to the remote is that it won’t work if the screen is closed like when the screen it facing out. The layout of the item is not as seen in the pictures but it’s ok. I haven’t tested it on the road so I will update my review based on whether it skips or how battery life lasts. One thing I will point out when the screen it facing and it’s closed, when you reopen it the movie will briefly pause then restart where you left off. Not sure why.

    Outstanding Blu-Ray Player

This replaced an older Oppo Blu-Ray player. The Panasonic will load the video disc more quickly and gives an excellent video and audio output. It enhances a regular Blu-Ray or DVD. I do regret it will not read SACD's, but in truth i did not have that many. When used as a CD player the sound is full and rich. I have not played with customizing the settings yet and suspect i can improve it a bit, although the factory settings work so well I coukd be wrong. The player is very well built and silent in operation. Very pleased with its performance so far.

    Great 4k player

This thing is a tank. Easily twice the size and 3 times the weight of the sony player I am replacing. My first test I watched Waterworld. Picture was so clear it seemed like I could dip my hand into the water. I have surround sound speakers, but at the time I had only my soundbar on and I had to turn it down from where I usually keep it because the sound was so much louder, but still very clear.

Great sound and picture, issues within a week.

Great picture and sound when it was working. Bought this about a month ago, lost sound on Netflix after using it for 5 days. Next day lost sound on all apps except DVD, and the only way to restore full functionality both times was to unplug it. I ended up returning it the next day and trading it for a different brand that offered the same set up options (separate HDMI for video and audio).

I used to own Samsung 4K DVD players and loved their home screens. The homescreen for the UB9000 seemed like something from the 80's, and the fact that it defaults to DVD playback when you turn it on with a disk in the drive was annoying. To watch Prime or YouTube is a 3 step process onless the drive is empty. Also the fact that there was no info displayed when pausing a movie about how much is left without pushing another button on the remote was rather disappointing.

I did a lot of research before purchasing this DVD player and was set aback about the antique homescreen and basic operation. If any review would have mentioned that, I still would have bought it with different expectations and probably would have exchanged it for the same model after it started acting up instead of returning it.

And if it was a few hundred dollars less I would recomend it, but the DVD player I replaced it with was less than half the price, sounds and looks just as good and has been working flawless for three weeks as of now.

    Great 4K Player

I own a Panasonic UB820 but I was interested to see why this unit cost 2X as much. As soon as I pulled it out of the box, the differences were obvious. It's rock solid, heavy and built like a tank. Quality internals and separate power supplies for audio and video output. It's THX certified. It has an HDR optimizer, that helps with tone mapping. All of this produces the best picture from a 4K player I've ever seen. I watched these two decks side by side, and while the UB820 produces a great picture, the 9000 is a step up. The colors are more realistic. The sync between lip movement and voices are spot on, but if an adjustment is needed, there is a setting for it. It automatically switch's to Dolby Vision unlike my Sony 800 M2. This was one of the reasons I replaced my Sony. My Blu Ray DVD's look better on this machine which auto up-scales to 4K. It has high grade 32 bit DAC's to give it a full rich sound. There's a must go into settings to turn off the digital out to allow the analog audio to play. It's the only way to utilize the DA's. Another take away is that it doesn't play SACD's or DVD-Audio. However, If watching 4K DVD's is your main reason for getting this machine, and you want the best picture, and great sound, this unit delivers

    Very disappointed

I am disappointed with my purchase. It advertised that it had Netflix Prime video YouTube Hulu Apple music Spotify and Pandora. Those seven preloaded apps were not on my Blu-ray player. What was preloaded on an already were voodoo Napster Pandora Netflix Prime video and YouTube. I was hoping to have Hulu not voodoo. I'm very disappointed in that. Also the Wi-Fi connection on it is horrible horrible horrible. The DVD player part of it seems so far to work fine. But yeah I'm very disappointed in my purchase I want to take it back. Now I need to figure out how to return this. So disappointed.

I got this so that I can stream and watch my bluray movies. The bluray works perfectly however the streaming is awful. I thought it was maybe the app so I tried all of them and all movies and shows freeze. I thought it was the internet so I tried other devices and they worked fine. It was this LG device that did not work. Once it freezes you have to unplug to reset. I also got it to watch HULU but it’s not one of the apps on there. The remote is so light weight I feel like I may break it. I will return this.

Great addition to a non-smart TV

I tecently purchased a 32 inch 1080 TV which is not smart, for a spare bedroom. My DVd collection is mostly Blu Ray so this lightweight compact unit does an excellent job of completing both functions in a confined space!

Works well but the remote has very tiny characters

Have used if for streaming Netflix and DVDs and has worked well. The instructions were pretty minimal and so I had to go online to figure out the set up. After that is was fine

    Unreliable & Nothing Spectacular

I liked my Sony player with generally the same features and price a little bit better, but the Sony has some kind of flaw where it locks up and never works again (Sony s3700). Sony replaced it three times before I gave up.

The Sony has easier and quicker Netflix and YouTube access than this LG. More apps in Sony player than the LG.

Was also able to program Sony remote to control my tv, LG remote has a very small list of TVs that it can control. LG remote also only works at very close range, pointed directly at player with NO obstructions.

The LG remote app for your phone is worthless and doesn’t work most of the time.

lG freezes frequently and can only be unfroze by unplugging.

Although LG player works more often than not (in my opinion it should always work and freezes too frequently) I am generally not impressed with this unit.

There simply does not seem to be any players in this price range that are actually reliable.

A nice little blu-ray player for the price

Overall a good Blu-ray player. Easy to setup with the TV, and easy to connect the streaming apps to it as well. My only gripe, and this isn't specific to LG or this player, is the price. They are still too expensive in my opinion considering the prices of everything else. And playing like $10 more for a wireless vs wired player is crazy since everything is wireless now...

    Nice but could be better

Make sure you don’t lose the remote cause it would be hard for a Kid to use without the remote.

Car port adapter needs some love

Keep a warranty. They work great for a while then the car port charger seems to always break and I mean actually fall into pieces. Or it will stop charging one of the tvs like a short in the wire. The sound is great and I love the remote controls and being able to share movies. And insignia doesn't have the car adapter so you cant call them so your only choice is find a substitute somewhere or return back to best buy for a new one

Perfect for long trips with kids

I looked at a lot of these, not sure what to get for long trips with my boys...ages 6 & 3. These are perfect. They come with a split line so you only have to plug into one port in your car. I love that they can be connected so they can watch the same thing or they can stay separate and watch different things. They work on CDs too in case music is a better option. The wires don't really get in the way too much in the car. They don't come with headphones but that's OK since I prefer to buy the better kids set anyway. They also don't have a battery but that's also OK with me since they are primarily for the car. They do have AC adapters for hotel rooms etc. and there is a little stand on the back that comes out so they can stay up when you're not in the car. The car mounting setup it comes with is made more for cars with broad, square headrests but you can criss-cross the straps and it stays just fine. I am able to open the device and change a disc while it's strapped up so I don't have to undo the mount to change the movie. Overall a great buy for the money and TOTALLY worth the peace in my car on long trips. :)

I have been looking at buying these for a year or more and thought i was getting them as a present for christmas last year. I didn't! So, i purchased them myself and do not regret it! They have a decent sound, but not loud enough to play over the radio in the front seat. We use wired headphones with them and it's better for everyone. I haven't tried to bluetooth any headphones yet. I know we drove 4hrs with them in the car without being able to play them because the batteries in the remotes were dead when i got them and so i couldnt' reach back to figure out how to play the movie. Just so you know, you have to hold the play button down. I would reduce the rating by 1 star because of the battery remotes, but these are really great devices and it is simple to change the battery.

    Very good unit

Nice product and the grandkids love them. So far they work well. Three downsides, for me at least. Headrest straps were too small to get over my super duty headrests. Each unit must plug in separately when using AC. Some might find this a benefit but my truck only has a single AC outlet. It does have a dual DC outlet jack but I find that it came loose quite often. Finally, complete operation is dependent on the remote controls. It is much easier for a 5 yr old to hit play in the actual unit. As I said these are my opinions based on a comparison to a previous dual unit I owned and became accustomed to, you may like these differences.

    Works great!

Worked well and suited our needs for a traveling car DVD player- love that if our car gets replaced we can just take the players with us. You do notice a slight difference from one screen to the next- your main screen projects to the secondary and it does dull the color but the kids haven’t complained so I am fine with it!

    Great for $

The product is great for the money. It allows both dvds to play separate movies, each with their own remote. My only reason for not giving it 5 stars is the volume isn’t very loud. It’s not terrible just hard to hear if you have anything else playing in the car. Lastly the mount on the back of the seat sometimes slides off. Minor issues that wouldn’t stop me from purchasing a second time.

Bought these when I was pregnant with my second child for my suv. Almost 2 years later and both are working amazingly. I did buy a longer a/c power cord from amazon to plug them up in my car since i had a rear facing AND a forward facing car seat the cord it came with was too short. But if youre setting the player up on the same aisle then the cord is plenty long. The remotes work great for me to use while in the driving seat so i dont have to pull over or stop anymore just to press play or turn up the volume. AND since each come with a wall power adapter the players are perfect for traveling anywhere and keeping the kids occupied. We use them when we visit family and even when we have bad weather and loose power the players are small enough to run off a generator. Trust me! You need these!

    Don't waste your money!

We bought this DVD player for our granddaughter's birthday and upon removal from the box the catch for the door was broken and would NOT stay closed. Time had expired for return to store so we were advised to contact the manufacturer. We did and provided them all requested information, but we told the unit had sustained physical damage which voided the warranty, which it had NOT!! VERY UNHAPPY with this purchase and WILL NOT be purchasing from this company again.
