Saramonic 2.4 GHz Wireless Clip-On Mic System w/ Lav & Dual Lightning Receiver for iPhone & iPad (Blink 500 B3)
    Description

The Saramonic Blink 500 B3 is an incredibly compact, lightweight, and professional sounding wireless microphone systems for the Apple iPhone and iPad. The included clip-on transmitter is small enough to clip directly to your shirt collar, and the included RXDi MFi Certified Lighting dual-channel receiver is so lightweight and unobtrusive that it won’t get in your way at all. It can easily be used on devices that are mounted in handheld gimbals, and the receiver is even capable of accepting the signal from two microphones if you add another Blink 500 TX transmitter (sold separately). The Blink 500 B3 is impossibly compact and lightweight, yet it delivers crystal-clear professional sound quality. The versatile transmitter features an excellent sounding built-in microphone that captures voices perfectly. Small enough to clip to a shirt or slide into a pocket and versatile enough to set on a table or podium, or even used handheld. It also operates as a traditional bodypack transmitter with the included SR-M1 professional omnidirectional clip-on lavalier microphone, providing an even more professional and visually discreet miking solution. The sleek, featherweight RXDi receiver plugs directly into the Lightning port of your Apple device and doesn’t require any batteries or charging to operate. There are no controls to fuss with, either. You just plug it in, and it works. Some wireless microphone systems are complicated to operate and require detailed knowledge of their menus and settings, but the Blink 500 B3 is so technically advanced that it couldn’t be easier to use. Even though there are no controls to adjust, behind the scenes the Blink 500 is doing a lot to ensure excellent performance. It operates on the interference-free 2.4GHz spectrum, and automatically hops channels to avoid static noise and audio dropouts. Pairing the transmitter to the receiver is simple, and all of the complicated aspects of using wireless microphones happen seamlessly in the background with the Blink 500, letting you concentrate on storytelling and getting a great shot. One of the tricky aspects of capturing sound for video is controlling the audio levels. Some people speak very loudly, while others speak very softly. That’s why Blink 500 transmitters have easy-to-use gain buttons to raise or lower the levels at the touch of a button, and an intelligent LED display shows you where they’re set. The transmitter’s internal Lithium battery gets 5 hours of life from a charge with the included charging cables, and the USB-C port can be used to power or recharge the transmitter in the field with portable USB battery packs. The 10-milliwatt power of the transmitter gives you an impressive range of 98 feet (30 meters) with obstacles, and 164 feet (50 meters) in open spaces.Handheld gimbals have the amazing ability to deliver cinematically smooth video footage that makes it feel like the camera is floating, but one area where they suffer is audio. It’s simply too difficult to attach external microphones or wireless receivers without throwing off the balance of the device. The RXDi receiver, included in your Blink 500 B3 kit changes this story. It’s small and lightweight enough to remain mounted to your Apple device and won’t interfere with the motors or arm of your gimbal. You can finally capture perfect sound with your mobile gimbal footage, and if you add a second Blink 500 TX transmitter (sold separately) you can easily put mics on two separate people.

    5 Features
  • Ultracompact Wireless Mic System for iPhone and iPad with Lightning: Amazingly lightweight, ultracompact and easy-to-use wireless microphone system for iPhone and iPad that provides broadcast-quality sound
  • Compact Dual Receiver is ideal for Handheld and Gimbal Filming: RXDi dual-channel MFi Certified Lighting receiver is extremely lightweight, space efficient and works perfectly when used in handheld gimbals
  • Use Built-in Mic on Transmitter or with Lavalier: Clip-On Transmitter has a great sounding built-in mic and it’s small and light enough to clip to shirts and clothing, or you can use the included SR-M1 Professional Lavalier Microphone
  • Easy-to-Use, Just Turn on and Record: No technical knowledge of audio is required to use. Operates on the interference-free 2.4GHz spectrum and automatically hops to free channels to avoid static noise and audio dropouts
  • Add Another Blink 500 TX Transmitter Anytime: Dual-Channel Receiver can handle mics from two separate people by adding a second Blink 500 TX transmitter (sold separately)

    Amazing wireless microphone

I bought this recently to do videos for my business. One of my pet peeves is listening to people on facebook that sound like they are a mile away from their phone. I had to remedy this so I wasn't another person doing the same thing. I loved how easily it connected and how well it sounds on live or recorded video. This is by far the easiest and best sound you can get before actually getting professional equipment and paying a fortune. Don't hesitate to buy it.

  • TASCAM - 4-Track Audio Recorder for Select DSLR Cameras - Black
    Description

Create professional audio to accompany your DSLR videos with this Tascam four-track recorder. The stereo microphone lets you record crisp vocal or environmental sound without additional equipment, and the compact design makes it easy to hide from view while filming. This Tascam four-track recorder has a preamplifier to ensure clean tracks with minimal distortion.

    9 Features
  • Two built-in omnidirectional mics: Allow easy recording of natural stereo sound without using external mics. Used in combination with one or two other mics, the DR-70D becomes a compact setup for recording interviews and ambient sound at the same time.
  • Four XLR/TRS combo jacks allow a variety of setups: The four-channel design enables combinations of shotgun microphones, lavaliere mics, and a built-in stereo mic to be recorded individually.
  • Dual recording mode: Can be used to create a backup file that is simultaneously recorded at a different level to prevent clipping when levels exceed the maximum input.
  • Built-in four-in/two-out mixer enables four-channel and stereo recording: Each of the four inputs is sent to a stereo mixer. This allows each input to be recorded individually for post production, while the stereo mix is sent to headphones and the camera guide track.
  • HDDA (High Definition Discrete Architecture) mic preamps: An NE5532 op-amp was selected for its outstanding effect on audio quality. Through a mix of discrete architecture and hand-picked components, Tascam has achieved an equivalent input noise level of -120 dBu.
  • Compact, rugged design can be attached above or below the camera: The bottom of the unit has tripod screw threads for mounting under your camera or on a follow focus cage. A removable camera attachment screw and hot shoe for the top of the unit are also included.
  • Camera out jack: A stereo mix of your audio is sent to the camera output for later synchronization in your editing software. Simply drop your audio and video into the multi-camera feature of most editing software, and audio will be automatically synced.
  • 3.5mm stereo mini jack input: Allows the connection of consumer video camera mics. This unit can supply plug-in power to the microphone and has a maximum input level of +10 dBV.
  • Camera in jack for monitoring and playback: Enables playback from your camera to evaluate a take. Either the camera signal or DR-70D can be monitored through the headphones.

    Excellent entry field recorder

I have been making short recordings for youtube and working in different environments which meant I needed something to handle audio that gave me more control and better quality that the camera's ability. I was using a directional mic fed into the M50 mirrorless camera, but the audio was always garbage. The DR-70D field recorder provided me with all of the flexibility I need for my small scale projects and the quality is awesome! I can utilize 4 different mics while providing some with phantom power and others without. The interface is simple to use (expecting you know something about audio) and the gain control on the front provides you with easy controls for each mic. The additional line out for headphones is great for monitoring the recording and making adjustments so I don't miss anything. I also really like being able to record the audio as either stereo by combining channels 1 / 2 and 3 / 4 or I can record each one as a mono channel and gain more control in post production.

    Powering the DR-70D:

Although it can run off of 4x AA batteries, I run it entirely off of my usb travel charger. With a 25,000mA capacity, the battery requires charging if I use 4 mics on phantom power after about 40+ hours of recording. Without using phantom power, 40 hours of recording dropped the battery percentage by only 2%! I'm not a huge fan of running devices off regular batteries if I don't have to and the option to use an external battery was a requirement.

    Who is this recommended for?

If you are just getting into recording, understand things like gain, peak, bitrates, XLR vs 3.5mm, phantom power, and such, this is a great entry level field recorder that provides great audio. If you don't know what any of those things are, this is NOT for you. If you have a small studio and want to have better audio than the camera's mic, or you use an external mic and would like to improve the overall audio quality, this is a great option. Finally, the built in stereo, omni-directional mics provide a great option for capturing ambient noises, or you can use them to capture the room noise and use that profile to help filter unwanted noises from the recording.

Keep in mind, this recorder does NOT do the editing for you, it simply records the audio. You need to do the editing yourself in a program like Premiere, DaVinci Resolve, Blender, etc. While this will improve the overall recording quality, if your mic is not good, you can still get bad audio. Each piece of recording equipment should be designed to do what you need it to do! In other words, if you plug in a cheap mic, expect cheap sound. The DR-70D can only record what is sent to it.

Tough to beat for the price and what is included

Exactly what I needed. I tried something else before this, and the audio would cut out periodically. I haven't had that issue so far with this unit. Also, I needed a lavalier mic, so having that included was great. Finally, the wireless charging case is also a huge plus if you are on the road or moving around a lot. For this price range, I feel like it is tough to beat this system.

Will be buying another as soon as I find reason to

The sound quality at this price point is spectacular. From here on up pricing for audio equipment starts to increase exponentially with only marginal gains. For how versatile, detachable, mountable it is, I don't think anything comes close. The quick features paired with the manual dial really let you key in on what you want to get picked up without everything you dont.

Great and Versatile Mic for the Price!

Versatile and easy to use microphone for DSLRs and iPhones. This is the 2nd Rode mic I've owned and it is a big improvement over the older videomic I own. I really like that it has an internal battery that lasts all day and can also be used as a USB mic for your computer. I highly recommend also buying the SC15 Lightning to USB-C Cable that Rode makes as it allows you to plug the microphone into your iPhone.

I use it for out of frame zoom and singing recording to replace Blue Yeti. This is amazing! Wow. Night and Day difference. yes i understand that Blue is supposed to be used near your mouth and this is a boom mic. for my purpose I should use a boom mic. I'm very happy with this purchase!

    5-Star product but only gets 4 stars....but gets 5

So I wanted to give this product a 4 but it wouldn't be fair to the product because it actually does sound good. I made a video review on this microphone here...https://youtu.be/dkR4_8QKHJk

To give a brief review using my words, this microphone sounds good and is an easy plug and play product. It is quite small In size so concealing it under clothing is easy.

Other then it's very short 4'2" cable length, I couldn't figure any other bads about this microphone. It is pretty sensitive to picking up ambient sounds depending on the DB levels.

Of all the microphones whether wireless or shotgun styled, I almost never find myself using this Lav mic. My ratings are strictly based off the microphone's performance which is rather excellent.

Rode never said this microphone came with a long cable, they never advertised it as the best lav mic on the market or anything false. In my personal opinion, I would say this microphone is best used for settings where the ambient noise is below 78db. It works fine in noisier environments, just be ready to hear the backround noise in your output when playing back the audio.

I want to be clear that this lav microphone is a "close range" microphone. What that means is whatever you want to connect this to needs to be within an arm's reach. I've used this for vlogging with my GoPro having it directly connected and with a 22" selfie stick fully extended, I've reached the cord's max length "when concealing the cable inside my shirt".

This lav microphone works very very well with my Rode wireless Go incase you guys were wondering. It allows more flexibility with microphone placement of you don't want to use the Wireless go's transmitter itself which I have a video on that microphone as well.

    - yes you can use this with a personal recording device (as long as it has a 3.5mm input jack for you to connect this in)

    - yes you can use it for your DSLR or point and shoot camera (also as long as it has a 3.5mm input jack)

    - I use this with my Samsung note 10+ using the "Voice recorder app" and with my GoPro Hero8 inside the media mod. A special adaptor is needed to use this with your modern samsung and apple phones that no longer have a 3.5mm input jack.

    - I am not sure if you could use this with a laptop as a dedicated microphone for web chatting or anything relative but if your device has a didicated microphone input, I'm sure you could.

You guys could always reach me on Snapchat, Gmail or on my YouTube channel @ Jonasegway. I like to do random test with equipment of all sorts with as many different scenarios as possible, grabbing as much information as possible so hopefully I am able to answer your questions or concerns you may have on this product. Enjoy your day and hopefully you'll find good use of this mic.

    RODE delivers (again)

WOW...made the upgrade from using a shotgun mic (also by RODE) to using this lav GO mic (along with a RODE Wireless Go II + Canon 70D DSLR). This little mic is AMAZING! I got so used to doing more post-processing than I'd like to remove background noise with the shotgun mic. I have to do absolutely NONE with this lav mic. I couldn't be happier. Another win by RODE!

This Mic bundle is a GAMECHANGER

I’ve been a long time user of the Rode SmartLav lapel mic. I use it all the time recording field audio and video. I’ve been in the market for a wireless microphone system. When Rode announced the Wireless Go microphone system at the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) show, I jumped on it immediately. Slim form factor, simple setup, and a name I trust.

    Summary

I recommend the Rode Wireless Go. I’m happy with the form factor, quality, and audio results. Key wins for me:

Transmitter & receiver are pre-paired out of the box. You’re up and running in minutes.

    Super-slim form factor

Flexibility with the built-in microphone or external mic (like the SmartLav)

    Good range in the field

    US$199

The only gotcha is maintaining line of sight between the transmitter and receiver. This is called out on Rode’s website. I was a little surprised at the sensitivity to line of sight. Watch the video for more.

Love it, but you need extra parts!!

Great microphone! I use it for teaching yoga outside and virtually. You do need extra pieces though to make it work the best. You will need the SC7 cord for use with a laptop, camera, or smartphone. You will need a lavalier microphone and headset in order to use it best for fitness. It can be clipped to your shirt, but I have found it doesn't pick up sound as well without the headset.

Great product after you figure it out.

This is a very nice product, high-quality and compact. Works perfectly with my DSLR camera on video mode. Unfortunately it has very incomplete technical documentation or explanation of how it can be used with different types of equipment, so I was left using the trail-and-error approach. After I purchased it I found that I needed to also get an audio mic/headphone "splitter" in order to use it with my laptop. The sales associate in the store did not know this either. Also he sold me an external lavalier mic with usb-c, but that was not compatible. It requires a traditional 3.5mm microphone jack.

Powerful Mic Quality in a small package!!

This is one of the best wireless mics I have ever used. The range is great, but just like anything else, once you start having objects in the way, you will lose audio. You have 3 different decibel settings, the best one in my opinion is setting #2. And make sure you adjust your audio on your camera to around 6 or 7. The battery is great as well. it can easily last over 5 hours straight. Although the rode wireless mic has a new model out, I don't see the need to spend an additional $100 for what I need it for. I do recommend this item.

    Great wireless mic

Great mic! Works like a charm and from quite a distance. If you’re using it with a phone, you’ll need a different cable than the one it comes with. I couldn’t get it to work initially, but called Rode and they knew right away what the issue was. It works perfectly with the new cable. 4 stars because I feel like it should come with both cable options… Lots of people film from their phones these days.

good but awkward to charge, carry, and program

Overly loud, even with the adjustments, then it is quite muffled at times, not the clearest from the unit itself with the built in mic. No controls but the basics and only on the receiver, which is ok. Finally they made an app for it on android / iOS, but still it's very awkward to use a computer to modify this. No charger, just 3 usb-c cables make it a chore, the carry case itself is a sewn slip cover that looks like it was made for reading glasses.

You can get lav mics, but they're overpriced at $79+ each on top of $300 for this 11-06-2021, and then you have to think about the transmission quality. Even if you're too far away, you can program these to work on their own as they have their own dram to record 7 hours uncompressed and 18+ hours as mp3 I believe, so that's nice to match up if there's noise in the air so to say.

It's a mixed bag. It's almost a 5/5 over the top awesome, but not with those things to worry about and fiddle with.

    Good and ultra light

It has been working great for me. Quality of the audio captured is really great. Easy to tuck in. I have a Senheisser AVX, but the clip from the mic keep disappearing, and the transmitter is bulky. This is so easy to use. Just clip it on. Only gripe is, immediately you cannot use it on a professional Video camera. It needs a 1/8th to XLR. Have not done very long time tests to check the battery capacity, but 2 hours is easy.

Shure Motiv 88+ USB Condenser Microphone Review

This microphone for smartphones delivers crisp and awesome video and audio. Through the Motiv app which is free from Shure, I can adjust settings of the microphone for recording speech, singing or instrumental recordings. Without this microphone, recording with the built-in mic of my smartphone delivers distorted sound. For video, I can adjust lighting, lock the setting, zoom in and out with no difficulty. I recommend this product for any serious musician who wants to post their recordings with professional quality sound.

Bought to record my own acoustic music

I bought this not really understanding its use, at first other than knowing I wanted to film myself practicing and playing music.

Here's what I learned and what I wish for to be changed:

    - I wish to be able to power the mic outside of the camera as the mic is dependent upon the phone's battery.

    - It's my understanding the software App changes aren't saved in the software but rather in the speaker itself and the software reads that information. As such, I wish the mic could be used separately from the phone.

At $250 - $300 it doesn't have the cleanness of a $200 ZOOM H4N PRO Field Recorder given distance to the mic, but at the same time, the ZOOM isn't three mics with a large area of control for those mics and it's not integrated with a camera either.

Personally, video aside, for better audio quality (less noise), I would prefer a field recorder. If you need an all in one package, then this is a great package and you'll probably be most pleased. It's pretty impressive what SHURE had done with this package.

The Shure MV88+, definitely has its place for less equipment carry around, fast results - audio and video together, etc. but you're limited with it because you're tied to the phone. I understand this is what it was made for but the question really boils down to this; Are you in the niche market of making videos with the upper smartphones/tablets that this product caters to? If so, you'll probably be most pleased. If not, then you may find that despite its amazing feature set, this device can be claustrophobic in relation to other audio equipment given cost to price performance.

I'm looking forward to Shure's future with further developments of this type of technology.

RODE SC7 gets a thumbs up

This is a well made cable that works just as described. I had to order this cable so that I could connect our Rode Wireless Go receiver to our laptop computer for our live-stream sessions. I really like the fact that each plug is a different color which makes connection to our laptop less confusing. Be sure to check out the RODE webpage for video's on how to connect their Wireless Go to your computer as you may need an additional cable to convert the 3.5mm plug to a USB on your computer.

It you're recording with your iPhone.

While simple, I'd been having problems connecting my iPhone to my Rode microphone. I tried almost everything and this was my last resort. Fortunately it worked and the audio sounded good. Will also say I love the black and red color scheme and the curled wire. Good buy.

Great cable but a little expensive

I bought this to connect my RODE VideoMicro external microphone to my Samsung Galaxy S20.

The cable that comes with the mic is a TRS to TRS cable that works fine with my DSLR but for smartphone connectivity, you need a TRS to TRRS cable and this does the job. The black end goes into the mic and the grey end goes into the audio jack of the 'USB C to audio jack adapter' (bought separately from BestBuy)

Great alternative to built-in camera mic.

This product was sent to me for the purpose of this review. I am not being paid by Shure or BestBuy for this review. The opinions expressed are my own and are not influenced in anyway by either source.

From the company that makes two of the most iconic microphones comes a pretty good Camera mic with built-in SD flash recorder.

First this mic comes packaged very well. It is in custom cut-out foam inside the box to secure it in shipping.

Yes, batteries are included as well.

A rare feature of any manufacturer is the included full-size manual written in several languages.

Also included is paperwork for the warranty, a safety and warning paper an addendum written in what appears to be Chinese and a sticker.

Not a huge fan of product stickers. Shure save your money on printing and do not include them please.

Mounting the mic is as simple as mounting a flash. It attaches to the flash shoe on top of the camera.

This mic can be used with cameras with or without a mic in jack as it has an internal recorder that uses a microSD card. This is a nice feature as it also gives you a backup recording of the audio if your camera for some odd reason did not record a good audio track.

The LCD screen on the back provides access to the menu for adjustments of the mic settings, which there are several and it is very user friendly. There is mic gain, headphone volume, camera output volume, low-cut filter (to remove low frequency rumble) as well as setting for screen brightness and contrast.

However setting the proper gain level can be quite tricky if you are a solo YouTuber or other platform creator. It is trial and error until you find the right level as you cannot see the screen while you are standing in front of the mic/camera.

Also on the back, there are power and record buttons as well as a joystick that allows you to move around the screen to set various settings like mic gain and headphone output.

The mic also has two output jacks for monitoring with headphones and an output for connecting to a camera. It also runs on 2 AA batteries which are included. Shure did not cut corners here, they are using name brand batteries to power the mic.

The sound quality is pretty good. If you are recording in a room in your house, be prepared for a bit of room echo. As with any recording at home this is to be expected unless you have sound treatment, even cheap moving blankets hung on the wall will help with this. If you are planning to import the file into a video editing software that allows you to tailor the audio, this really will not be an issue.

If you can mount the mic closer to the source you are recording it helps lower the gain needed to record an acceptable audio sample to sync with the video later and help cut out unwanted room noise.

The build quality is what to expect from Shure. The mic body seems to be aluminum mounted in a shock mount to help stop vibrations from entering the sound recording. Seems to be built like a tank. They also have included a foam wind screen/ pop filter. You call also purchase a separate fur style wind screen that cuts wind noise by 25dB, according to the Shure web site.

I have only recorded a short video to test this mic out vs. the onboard mic that is in my camera. Any external mic is better than what Is built into the camera.

Overall impressions of the mic are rather good. The downsides I had found were where the battery polarity indicators are located. The front of the body opens to reveal the battery compartment and SD card slot. The battery compartment has its own door as well and when opened it covers the inside of the main door that has pictures of batteries to show which way, they are supposed to go in. I did not notice this at first and reading the instruction was of no help to show where to look for the polarity markings for proper battery placement. Also, the LCD screen is of no use when standing in front of the camera with the mic attached and trying to set the proper mic gain.

These are not major faults to knock off any stars for this review, just a couple of minor annoyances that I found that needed to be pointed out.

    Stellar Audio Camera Recording

At first glance, this condenser microphone will leave video and film fans intrigued. Known for their audio quality, Shure is a reputable brand that had me wanting to try their VP83F camera mic.

Its shotgun-look but barrel-integrated design with Rycote Lyre suspension (touts zero vibration and mechanical noise caused by microphone mount movement) will call the attention of anyone seeking a compact, high quality, professional recording microphone. The Shure VP83F LensHopper has the ability to attach to your camera or to a mic stand. The packaging includes a windscreen, AA batteries, and an audio aux cable that connects from the left side of the microphone base to your camera’s mic input to record audio. Also, a headphone output is located on the other side of the microphone so you’re able to monitor the sound as you’re recording it. Over on the front (or on the opposite side of the tip of the microphone), is a bright backlit LCD screen, a joystick, and what I call simple buttons to power the microphone on and to record. The button also has a small light in the middle and above to indicate a recording is in progress.

The backlit LCD display on the mic is a big plus. Using the joystick on the mount, you’re able to set a time and date to help better label or locate your audio recordings. On the display, you can also set mic gain adjustments from 0 to 60, depending on the sound and levels you are trying to capture. The headphone volume levels can also be adjusted from 0 to 60. The Shure VP83F also has a low cut filter, which you are also able to turn on or off through the settings available on the display. Setting the low cut filter will help minimize any background humming or electronic feedback noise.

The most important feature of this mic for any film or video fan, is the ability to record audio at 24 bit 48kHz quality on a microSD card by simply inserting up to a 32GB card and pressing the red record button. Your camera will still be recording audio through the mic. However, using a microSD to record your audio at the same time will allow you to have an audio backup, in case your camera’s audio recording was to become corrupted or to be able to conveniently edit audio later.

While testing the mic, without setting the low cut filter and with the volume at 28, the sound level picked up was louder and much clearer than I expected. While recording at an outdoor presentation of my child’s kindergarten choir concert, I greatly enjoyed the details of the voices picked up from the mic. From hearing the children’s voices and instrumental track, to the hand claps and parents’ shouts, the footage and audio recording will help bring this memory back to life in the future.

Overall, I recommend this microphone for anyone looking to record not only clearer, better audio for professional recordings, but to capture more detail in their camera audio recordings. There have been times where I connected an external mic to my camera expecting more from my audio. With the Shure VP83F, I am not kidding, there was a huge upgrade and therefore recommend it.

    Versatile High-Quality Shotgun Microphone

The Sure Lens Hopper VP83F Shotgun Microphone is a high-quality microphone for your DSLR camera or even as a secondary audio source should one need it.

This review will be done in 3 parts – features, usage impressions, and pros/cons:

    Features:

The features of this Microphone are simple but effective. It is a compact but relatively common-looking shotgun microphone for use with DLSR or HD video cameras. It has a built-in Rycote® Lyre® shock mount so that the recording is isolated from vibration and mechanical noise. The Mic has both a headphone out for monitoring and an output port for the microphone port on your camera. What is unique about this microphone is that it has its own integrated Flash Recording feature (uncompressed WAV capture at 24-bit/48khz sampling rate) that allows for high-quality audio capture that in my testing has been better than the audio that is captured via the camera – even when the microphone is plugged into the camera. The microphone has a very small LCD display that is amazingly readable that can be used for monitoring as well as setting up the recording options to be used. The manual states that it supports up to a 32GB micro-SD card, however, I have been using a 64 GB card during my testing without issue. The menus are controlled via a 5-position control joystick/lever.

The microphone comes with a foam windscreen (fur windscreen available as an accessory), 2 AA Batteries, and a 3.5 mm detachable coiled cable for connecting to your camera.

This microphone has a Supercardioid/lobar pattern to avoid unwanted audio.

    Usage Impressions:

The audio quality of this microphone is top-notch. It is very easy to use, and the feature and capabilities of the flash recording system are impressive, especially with the small LCD screen.

The options available in the menus on the microphone include File List, Mic Gain, Headphone, Low Cut, and Utilities (SD card options, backlight, time/date, battery type, camera out, contrast, reset defaults, Device data, update firmware).

This Device is a high-quality, versatile shotgun microphone that can be used as a primary audio source or even as a secondary source on a boom or stand when needed. The only challenge here is remembering to start the flash recording and the camera recording when using the integrated flash recording feature.

Pros: High Audio quality, Uncompressed Flash Recording, shock mount, monitoring features.

    Cons: None

    An excellent sounding versatile microphone

As an avid photographer and videographer, I am always looking out for the best tools to get the job done with a professional end result.

The first and arguably most powerful feature that drew me to the Shure VP83F, was simply the “F” part of the name. The F stands for flash recording using the Shure preamp (as opposed to the camera preamp) via direct recording to a micro SD flash card (up to 32GB). This is a very useful feature. It not only sounds MUCH better through the Shure preamp (uncompressed 24 bit WAV files), but it also gives you the ability to record simultaneously through the included 3.5mm cable to the internal camera file, thus giving you a backup audio file if needed. Awesome!

I mostly use this on top of my mirrorless camera that is flying on a gimbal for fast paced recording. While this mic does add a little weight considering it is mostly made of metal, I don’t find it to be overbearing at all. Especially once everything is balanced properly at initial gimbal setup. That said, I also have a cage for my Hero 9 which enables me to use this microphone on top of my GoPro. Again, since the Shure records to a micro SD card, this is an excellent choice if you are wanting to massively upgrade your audio recordings with a GoPro. In fact, since this is a cold shoe mount, you really could use it for just about any audio recording you want. You could place it on a tripod or light stand, set it just out of frame for voice tracking while using a zoom lens, or even fly it on a boom. A very versatile all-in-one audio recording device.

Another great feature that I find helpful with this microphone is the fact that you can use headphones for monitoring with their own dedicated input. You can also set the gain level for your headphones quickly with the center joystick.

The visual display menu is extremely small but also very welcome and useful. Here you can set the gain level for recording (including a visual peak warning), set a separate gain level for your headphones, view your track numbers, preview pre-recorded tracks, view battery status, view remaining recording time in minutes, and see at-a-glance if your low cut filter is on or off. If you click the center joystick left/right/up/down, you can also very quickly change any of these features. You can even do any of these adjustments on the fly while you are recording. From the same center joystick, you can also go further into the menu system to format your SD card, update firmware, and even select what type of AA batteries you are using, Alkaline, Lithium, NiMH. It’s great to know you can use rechargeable batteries if you prefer.

As a guitar player, I own and use several other Shure microphones for different scenarios. I fully trust the Shure name for audio recording, so it really was a no-brainer for me to use a Shure microphone on top of my camera as well.

Ultimately, this is a very feature packed, versatile, and sophisticated (albeit easy to use) microphone. The sound quality is crystal clear and so much better than all of the other camera top mics I have tried, that I can easily and highly recommend the VP83F.

Lastly, while the design is rugged, I would have liked if there was at least a zipper clam shell case included for travel. As it stands, you will need to purchase a small case separately. This is a minor gripe and doesn’t change my views of the package whatsoever. If you want to take your camera, camcorder, or even GoPro audio recordings to a way higher level, look no further than the Shure VP83F!

Clean, crisp sound, durable build, wide stage

The Shure VP83F is an easy-to-use camera-mountable condenser shotgun mic with built-it flash memory recording capability. It weighs about 10 oz as the body of the mic is made from a durable metal, and it comes pre-fitted with a foam windscreen and mounted on a Rycote Lyre shockmount. The mic requires 2 AA size batteries but can use various types including alkaline, Li-ion, or NiMH rechargeables. On a pair of alkalines you can expect about 9-10 hours of recording, NiMH 12-15 hours, and 17-23 hours using Li-ion batteries. While a bit on the hefty side, the build quality feels premium.

I’m using this mic primarily with my compact mirrorless camera which nearly always produces noisy or unusable audio when recording video. I like that I can attach the Shure mic directly to the hot shoe on top of my camera. The sound captured from the Shure VP83F is clear and more focused with less noise and better clarity than the built-in microphone on my camera. While there was still a bit of ambient noise, even with the low-cut filter enabled, there was far less than what the camera mic picks up. Note that it captures mono audio only.

Unfortunately, when used in the hot shoe of my camera, I cannot use my camera’s flip-up LCD for selfie-view nor can I use the electronic viewfinder that also requires the use of the hot shoe. Since the mic can also be mounted onto any ¼”-20 threaded mount, I’ve found that using a flash bracket and attaching it offset to the side of the camera, or simply on a tripod, works better for my particular setup. While the super cardioid/lobar polar pattern is supposed to reject unwanted off-axis sounds, I found that it doesn’t eliminate a whole lot of sound from the sides and back if they're not super quiet, so the sound stage is actually fairly wide for a shotgun style mic. Therefore, the closer you can be to your subject when recording with the VP83F the better, to get that really dialed-in focused audio. That’s why it’s great to have the option to mount it on a tripod off-camera if your camera is far away from your subject.

You can output the VP83F’s audio directly into your camera (if it has a mic input jack) using the included AUX coil cable via the red jack located on the left-hand side of the mic and this will replace the onboard audio from the camera’s mic in your video recording. You can simultaneously record the LensHopper’s audio separately to flash memory (microSD card, not included) and sync the audio and video in post-production. The benefit here is that you have a backup copy of the audio track, and the audio recorded directly on the mic may offer better quality since a camera’s preamp could introduce some noise even when using an external mic. Output level to the camera can also be reduced by -20 or -40 dB in the settings depending on your camera’s pre-amp sensitivity. The max card size it can use is 32 GB which can store up to 64 hours of recorded audio in 24-bit 48kHz WAV format.

The mic has a second output jack on the right-hand side for headphone monitors so you can listen to the mic’s audio feed live. The live monitoring is great because you can adjust some of the mic’s settings on-the-fly while recording as recording conditions change like mic gain, low-cut filter, and headphone volume (0 to 60). You can also adjust the mic gain from 0 to 60 dB and use the levels meter on the LCD to determine when you’ve got the optimal level of signal to reduce background noise (too little gain) but avoid clipping (too much gain). The levels meter will display when it detects clipping, so you can adjust your settings or distance to your audio source. Of course, if you’re a solo shooter and are also the subject in front of the camera, this feature isn’t as useful since you can’t see the LCD on the mic. I liked that you can also use the monitor headphones to listen to tracks recorded on the microSD card in playback mode right on the mic, so you don’t have to pull the tracks off the card in order to review them, saving me time if I need to reshoot right away.

While I thought the tiny LCD screen would be way too small to be useful, I actually was quite impressed with its user-friendliness; it has a bright backlight and the 5-way joystick makes it easy to navigate the menus and settings on the screen to make adjustments. I wasn’t a fan of the shape and feel of the record button though because I found it a bit hard to press and more so when pressing and holding to end a recording since the microphone tends to shift in the shockmount when you try to press the button.

The low-cut filter helps reduce low frequency noises and ambient sound like rumbling trucks passing by, machine hum, handling noise, and even wind noise to some degree, which I thought worked pretty well. If you record outdoors though, I highly recommend getting the optional fur windjammer (aka “dead cat” windscreen) to further buffer against noise from wind. Overall, I’m pretty happy with the improvement in sound over my camera’s onboard mic, though the sound in my opinion could be more directional, however, the feature set of the controls gives you a lot of flexibility and customization options to optimize the sound in different recording conditions.

    Solid sound, slightly dated design

    Pros

    Long battery life

    Uses regular AA batteries

    Can record to microSD

    MicroSD recording bypasses preamp issues

Can dual record to camera and microphone

    Includes audio monitoring passthrough

    Can record audio independently

Low-cut filter option filters out camera noises

    Excellent off axis sound rejection

    Excellent RF protection

    Integrated shock mount

    Cons

Small, recessed screen can be difficult to read

Using click buttons on isolated microphone is awkward

Battery door latch is hard to release with larger fingers

Battery orientation graphics are hard to see

Screen and button design feels antiquated

Screen is angled an inset making using at or near head level hard

Shure was around long before vlogging was a thing. While there are an increasing number of new vlogging products and microphones, the Shure VP83F is a seasoned offering in camera mounted condenser microphones with the design going as far back as at least 2013. It is uncertain if any changes have been made over the years. It seems unlikely as even the firmware hasn’t progressed beyond 1.0.9 during this time. This might be concerning except that Shure has been designing microphones for so long they have mostly worked out the general design. It has an integrated shock mount system and includes a foam windscreen. Unfortunately, the Windjammer (dead cat) isn’t included.

    Setup and Performance

Getting started is pretty straightforward. Just add batteries and, in most cases, attach it to the hot shoe mount of the camera. The main choice you have is if you want to pass the audio through to the camera for recording or use an SD card to store recordings and bypass the in-camera preamp. If you decide to record the audio in camera, others have recommended turning gain as far down as possible on the camera an only use the gain control on mic. Others have said it is possible to pass audio through as well as record it to the SD card at the same time but it’s hard to find a use case to do both. That said, having the option is nice. In either case, the base of the camera has an audio monitor out so you can hear exactly what the microphone is picking up.

The controls are traditional tactile buttons which require a fair amount of force to activate. This might be good for preventing accidental changes, but it has a downside. With the integrated shock mount, button presses either require you to hold the body or press the button until the shock mount binds and can’t move. While operation is reliable, the interface feels dated with a tiny, angled screen set deep into the body. This means not only are changes to gain during recording a bit tricky, seeing the screen without holding it below your head is a bit of a challenge. If you are vlogging solo, you are going to need a have a camera that has a forward-facing screen, hopefully you already do, that can show audio levels.

A bonus of having integrated storage is you don’t have to actually use the VP83F on the camera. You can even hold it in your hands if needed as a makeshift microphone. It might seem a bit odd, but it can be really helpful to have one less thing to carry with you.

Performance is very good. Off axis noise rejection means you can record audio even with a significant amount of background noise. One setting you must turn on if you are going to be using it mobile is enable low-cut. If you don’t, any adjustments or movements while holding the camera will be recorded as well as some wind and motor noises. Sensitivity is excellent with speech being very clear and rich. In fact, if you have the gain on the higher side, you could inadvertently create an ASMR video as it will pick up breathing and mouth sounds of the subjects you record so some initial setup is a must.

    Final Thoughts

If you are a vlogger looking to improve your audio quality, don’t ignore the veterans of audio looking only at the new kids on the block. Shure might not seem as interesting, possibly even dated, but the functionality is definitely there. Having built in recording also makes getting clean audio far simpler. While the interface could use some modernization, once you get your setup dialed in and just use it, you will find the feature set and audio quality hard to beat.

Internal SD recording is a game changer!

    Pros:

    - SD recording in unit (Easily it’s best feature!)

    - relatively small and lightweight

    - easy to navigate menus

    - quickly adjust levels while recording

    - cold shoe and 1/4in threaded mount options

    - great recording quality for the average user

    - a run and gun staple

    - low cut filter (can be turned off)

    - adjustable camera out signal dependant on your camera preamp

    - headphone out for monitoring with separate volume control

    - Fine gain adjustment to get that sweet spot dialed in

    - Line out to camera with provided coil cable

    Cons:

    - AA battery vs a rechargeable in body battery (can use rechargeable AA though)

    - screen is a bit small for those with poor eyesight or in bad viewing conditions

    - battery compartment is not labeled for + and - (it’s a small detail but annoying and easy fix)

    - maybe not top quality audio you’d expect from Shure but 99% of ears won’t notice

    - without a “dead cat” windscreen, you’re going to get a lot of wind noise, even with a low cut on, so if you’ll be outside, you’ll need to purchase this separately. (Pretty common issue)

    THE GOOD:

The Shure Vp83F lensHopper is a fantastic shotgun for anything from run and gun to boom mic-ing interviews. This little thing can be used in a ton of situations and can be your main audio source or a backup, or both when you use the optional SD card internal recording.

And let’s talk about that available SD recording for a second. This adds so many possibilities to your setup that it’s really worth the extra cost vs a similar mic without internal recording, even the Shure VP83, which is basically the same mic, just without the SD recorder.

Having available internal flash recording allows you to not only get a direct, clean recording, but also allows you to move the microphone away from the camera and use it to mic talking head interviews or lock down the camera for a wide shot, away from the subject, and boom mic over or under frame. Once in the editing room, you simply sync audio with your on board camera reference audio track and you’re all set. No longer are you tied to long mic cables or the limits of keeping your mic and camera in the same location. This also negates any bad preamp your camera body may utilize. (More common than you think.)

Ok, awesome, but what if you’re doing more of a run and gun, or vlogging on the streets, maybe a walk and talk? The LensHopper is still a great option for that as well! You can mount it to your camera's cold shoe or a standard quarter inch thread anywhere on your camera rig and you’re ready to go. Keep in mind, if you use the cold shoe, depending on your camera body, the mic may block the flip up screen if you are trying to vlog in a “selfie” style shot. In this situation I would recommend an external monitor or moving the mic to a different mount. Regardless of how you mount it to your camera rig, the VP83F is perfect for youtubers and run and gun shooting like wedding receptions or events where you don’t have time to use a lav or set up your better audio equipment. And thanks to the aforementioned SD internal recorder, you can still record directly to the SD card AND into the camera with the provided coiled mic cable. Keep in mind, depending on your camera and the preamp on it, you may need to adjust the camera output levels on the microphone menu to get a good sound into your camera. For my setup with the A7iii (which has a controversial preamp debate) I was able to still get a good clean sound recorded in body but I still chose to use the SD direct recording because in theory, that will always be better. This does however give you a good backup, two audio source redundancy, so if you have a pop, drop out, or corrupt file, etc, you won’t lose your audio and have an embarrassing conversation with your client.

    THE CONS:

A quick note about some of the “cons” I found while testing this mic. One very tiny detail but just bugged me; everywhere I looked, I could not find a little + or - for the battery compartment. I did see two springs at bottom and figured usually negative end to spring, but that didn’t work. I had to arrange the batteries a few times until it was correct and the power came on. Once you figure it out, no problem, but it’s just odd they didn’t bother to mark it. Also with the batteries, I’ve seen other reviews say the compartment is loose and will probably break open in the field. I don’t know if Shure has updated this or other reviewers were testing in earthquakes, but there are TWO latched compartments holding the batteries in and they are pretty tight latches. I don’t see how those could pop open on accident.

Battery life seems like it may be an issue and unfortunately means my camera bag will once again be full of AA’s rolling around. The manual includes a general life expectancy for battery type and you’ll definitely want to get rechargeables or at least NiMH to get decent life out of them. Just remember, having extra batteries is the difference between newbies and pros.

    OVERALL: (TL:DR)

I have only had this microphone for about 5 days so I haven’t tested it in EVERY real world situation but I did run it through a lot of simulated tests to avoid surprises out in the field and can say, overall, this is a fantastic little shotgun mic for the everyday user, youtuber, vlogger or run and gun videographer. So often audio is forgotten or done poorly, and this mic won’t make you magically sound better, it’s still a piece of professional equipment and requires professional training and expertise to use correctly. But if you take the time, learn how it works, what it does, and how to get the best out of your gear, then the Shure VP83F will give you nothing but good, clean, quality audio. Stop looking like an amateur by using your on camera mic and get this microphone to dive into the world of pro audio!

For those of you looking for specs, I included a picture of the manual specs page with all the juicy details. I won’t get into them here because I think most readers don’t care or understand, but the info is there if you want it.

Overall, I love this mic and will be taking it with me everywhere I shoot. It’s compact, powerful, and versatile with a beautiful sound representation for voice capture to help bring better sound to your videos.

    Time for an upgrade

I’m currently using this on my Canon 70D. My passion is photography and videography. But I’ve been doing my best to up my videography game for a while and recently started shooting with a more cinematic vibe in mind, and wanted to upgrade my mics to have even better sound and control. It’s easy to use and attach to the hot-shoe mount. It doesn’t take much to setup, as you can use this straight out of the box, but the benefits and advantages of using this mic goes far beyond just plug and record.

The build quality is superb. It has a metal body construction. Its much smaller than my other mic but it weighs slightly more due to its metal construction. It has a solid premium feel and look. It’s also less intrusive sitting on top of my camera or in front of me when on a stand as a boom.

It’s a directional mic so it will pick up on sounds directly in front of it. It won’t eliminate background noise but does a heck of a job minimizing it. Most of my footage, is of me speaking or using the audio as a voiceover on certain parts if not all of my footage so this type of mic is always perfect in those situations. And this one does not disappoint.

It features a built in recorder. It’s a bit of a learning curve when it comes to adjusting your sound on the mic, especially if you’re use to the old plug and go mics. This one sports a display on the back of the unit to track just about everything when it comes to your sound output/input. This has two jacks; one for input and the other for a headphone. The headphone Jack is useful if you’re behind the camera where you’re able to track, set levels and listen to the sound being recorded. For me I’m usually in-front of the camera so I won’t use the feature as often, but I’m glad it’s there if or when I do need it, if I’m recording footage where I can be behind the lens.

A pro for me is that the cord isn’t permanently attached to the mic, like my other one. I can use a much longer cord without having to join multiple extenders together. So I’m able to use this on a boom much more easily. This is useful for background sounds or sounds I want to bring attention to, like pouring tea into cup, cutting vegetables, or similar to highlight my footage.

The quality of audio is crisp and clear and the sound is great. It’s not that much of an improvement over my current setup but there is a difference. I’m sure it’ll be even more noticeable once I fine tune my audio settings even more. The Rycote Lyre mount is great for stabilizing and controlling accidental knocking or bumping sounds from being picked up by the mic. When I use this on my cameras hot-shoe it will still pick up the sound of the lens micro adjusting its focus. Which isn’t something I don’t think will go away no matter what mic you use. Luckily, there are different options to eliminate that which isn’t focusing on the mic itself, and I won’t get into, as it doesn’t benefit this review.

Another benefit is it has a slot for a micro SD card, which means that the sound can be recorded as a backup and saved. That’s awesome, especially if the sound drops out of your footage at anytime you have a backup ready to go.

One immediate negative is that I hate the battery life. Estimated 10 hours on two double A’s. I haven’t ran it for that long to confirm this data. I don’t use my camera continuously for that amount of time, however, I’ve been known to accidentally leave my mic on for days. My other mic uses a 9V and lasts ultimately forever and even when the battery life is low it will still turn on and record quality sound for months. Shameful me, I know, lol. I find myself changing it maybe once a year, if that. So I’m not too fond of the possibility of having to change this out much more frequently.

Another negative is that the screen is quite small. I feel like there is room to improve the screen size just a little, but it isn’t a major downside. The display is readable, the backlight is nice and bright and the menus are somewhat easy to navigate, especially once you go through the options several times. It displays everything you need to know right up front so this outweighs the screen size.

I’ve been playing with this mic and adjusting the settings to find my sweet spot. Like I mentioned it’s more involved than your regular plug and record mic, but you also don’t need to change a setting out of the box. It’s great. I recommend this mic, if you have the extra bucks definitely upgrade your old mic or if you’re new to this gear, this is a great start as this is one mic you’ll get real use out of.

    Worth The Price

Even with its $400 price tag, this wireless lav kit from RODE is worth every penny. Don't torture yourself and try to save money with cheaper wireless lavs from other companies. This unit looks professional and more importantly sounds professional. I primarily use it hooked up to an external audio recorder with the optional XLR adapter for the best possible audio quality, but even when I have used it hooked up directly to my DSLR the audio quality was still very clean and crisp. Make sure to pick up a set of rechargeable AA batteries though as the RX & TX units can eat up batteries fairly quickly depending on how much you use the kit.

Wish I had a negative, but I have yet to run into a problem or have a bad experience with this (knock on wood). The only thing I regret is not purchasing it sooner.

Simplest mid-range priced Wireless Lav Mic system

RODELink Filmmaker Kit Digital Wireless System is the simplest mid-range priced Wireless Lav Mic system around, had them up and running in under 3 minutes. Sound quality is excellent and the range in exceptional. Not fond of the included Lav mic. I found little disturbance. When i used my other mic it was excellent. Overall i am satisfied. Right wireless mic system for my project

    Good for the price

I'm a professional videographer who uses company bought, high end professional gear daily. I needed this wireless system to shoot projects on the side for personal use (I'm not allowed to use my company equipment for that purpose.) Overall, this product has fit my needs. The transmitter is a little bulkier that I would prefer and the microphone wire is very thin. I haven't had any problems with it yet, but I'm hoping it doesn't break because of it's thinness. This mic system has worked for me as I had hoped. I like Rode products for my DSLR use and have not had any issues with any of them. I've only used this for short distances, so I'm not sure how good the range is on it.

    An Incredible Mic

I shoot stills professionally and occasionally shoot video. When I do, Rode Microphones are my go-to choice for audio capture.

The hotshoe mount on the VideoMic Pro works great when I'm using it on my DSLR when shooting on the go or with an adapter so I can hang it over a subject as a boom mic.

They're solid and I love the fact that they're powered by a 9V battery.

The only reason I replaced my older version of the VideoMic Pro was that I was finishing the first of three days of shooting video and stills, tripped on a sidewalk and my mic flew off the rig and hit the ground, breaking apart (yes, I'm a clumsy idiot). The good news is that the updated design of this model blows the older design away.

Even if you're a semi-pro who wants to start working with external audio recording, this product is well worth the money.

Good mic. A bit pricey. A bit large.

Very nice addition to my Canon DSLR. Sound has always been tinny and noisy with the Canon's built in mic. This is a massive improvement. I can pick up dialouge from 15 - 20 ft away without a problem.

It is a bit pricey for what you get. There may be less expensive mics out there that will get the job done. Its also a little on the large side.

Good small mic, good quality, and good sound!

This little mic does a better job than I thought it would when it comes to picking up sound and recording voice.

    - Sound Quality - This part is good and for such a small device it does well and would be good to keep around if you have a small camera and want to use it to vlog or something like that. It picks up good quality sound I can use for sure.

    - Build Quality - Well I do like the size of it and I know its cheaper than some others but I don't like the plastic part that attaches it to the hot shoe mount on the camera. But I have been using it a lot and have yet to break it so maybe it will hold up pretty good and is just soft plastic to keep vibrations and extra noise down. Maybe its better build quality then it looks when you first open the package, and it also has a spot to screw in a tripod mound or other accessories to hold the mic!

    - Size and use - This was the reason I got this mic originally was the size and how easy it was to use and pack around because it doesn't require batteries like a lot of other camera accessories. So no need to worry about it not working because the batteries die or it not being turned on because if its plugged in it should be working. Then the portability on to of that easy access part, it fits in any bag and doesn't look just crazy keeping it on my Mirrorless Camera if thats what I'm using. So very quick and easy to use and set up no extras needed, comes will the wind breaker thing to keep noises down and just works. I think over all its a good device and the only thing I would like to see it have is 4 points attached to the cold shoe/hot shoe mount so it didn't move so much and worry me about messing it up.

I would for sure buy again and think it is a really good addition to any camera bag and it works good along with being so quick and easy. That means that even if you have some other mic this one could end up being your quick go to for the ease and size!

Great microphone for recording videos and meetings

I really didn't want to spend $100+ dollars on a "brand name" microphone when I'm not recording songs or professional videos. This serves its purpose of being significantly better than the mic that comes with my laptop. Now if you have a PC with no mic, this one is a no brainer. Yes the $100 dollar ones will make you sound like a rock star :) but if that's not what you need this is perfect. Also, it is smaller than the more expensive ones, desk mount make it very convenient and it is threaded with a 1/4" hole like a tripod thread which greatly increases it functionality.

    Great price to value ratio

There many more expensive USB microphones you can buy, but for function and easy, you'll find it hard to beat the Insignia USB Microphone.

My need was simple, I needed of a good quality microphone to dictate to my computer and give commands. It needed to sit on a flat surface with some adjustment features for position, at the same time it needed to be big enough that I wouldn't have to fumble with it being in the proper positioned, but not so big that I wouldn't have the space for it on my already crowded desktop. I didn't need it to be wireless, as I'm only going to be using it at my desk.

The Insignia, USB Microphone fit the bill, it does everything I need to it do, without having to pay for bunch of additional features I don't need or will likely never use. I don't have dreams of being a podcaster, I just need functionality for what I'm doing. It's not bad looking either. ;)

I'm very happy with my purchase and would buy it again.

    Great value USB Microphone!

I've been using my Insignia USB Microphone for around a week now and I must say I absolutely love it! After opening the package I was pleasantly surprised on the build quality and looks. The microphone is heavy and the stand does a great job supporting the Mic, and its fully adjustable. Plug and play and you're off and running. I would highly recommend this microphone to anyone starting off with blogging or recording YouTube video's- For under $50 this is a great value with very nice sound quality!

Great starter microphone, no immediate cons

Excellent microphone for high quality zoom meetings, or voice narration or recording.

Installation and drivers all went very smoothly simple plug in with USB to micro USB on the back of the mic. Microphone range seems good, speaking within a foot or two comes across clearly; you do not need to be right against the mic to get a good recording.

Minor detail, but the mounting screw at the base of the mic is somewhat shallow (only get one or two complete turns), but still mounts easily and securely to any camera mount, tripod, or clip-on quarter inch screw mount (standard mounting for any camera etc).

I have very limited experience with microphones and recording, but this serves my needs for some voiceover work and meetings online.

    Great for teleconferencing from home

I got this last week to teleconference from home. I did not want the headset and boom mic if I could avoid it. This thing works perfectly. I can hear other attendees through my PC speakers, and talk in a normal voice with this mic on my desk, just in front of my monitor. Others tell me my voice comes through clear. And there is no echo from the PC speakers. And my head is unencumbered with a headset, boom mic, and cord! This was a very good purchase! Oh, and windows 10 recognized it immediately on plug-in. They're was ZERO setup. Volume levels, etc were perfect - out of the box.

    No Nonsense

The Shure - VP83 LensHopper shotgun microphone for cameras and camcorders is all win and no nonsense.

Was eager to try this mini-boom out for myself. It connected up to my Canon XC10 perfectly. The XC10 already contains a very capable built-in microphone but handling bump-noise and occasional fan noise pick can be a bit distracting. The Shure - VP83 LensHopper does a proper job of solving both of those issues.

The Shure - VP83 LensHopper comes with a printed, easy to digest user manual. It is powered by an AA battery and on disposable alkalines, will operate for up to 130 hours and a nearly mind blowing 190 hours on a lithium formulation.

I found the completely understated design appearance of the Shure - VP83 LensHopper to be perfect. It is slender, doesn't stand too tall, has a solid shoe mount lock, doesn't protrude off the back of my camera - even without the loop attached and its build quality is what you would expect from Shure.

Unlike many of the competing mics, the controls are located on the back, tail end of the unit and that - honestly - is where they need to be.

In my experience the gain offset (mic sensitivity) within the camera needs little to no adjustment when using this microphone at its default "0" setting. Certainly different shooting environments will impact this but for general usage, it just worked ... plug & play. The Shure - VP83 LensHopper does an excellent job of pulling the sound in closer while keeping the center of attention focused, clean sounding and full bodied. The onboard low-cut filter helps but does take a bite out of the low end - so use it carefully.

This shotgun microphone is certain to elevate any cameras recording capability with respect to sound.

My only gripe - and it's really just a nit - is that at this price point, Shure should have included a basic, dead-cat wind suppressor. But other than that, this microphone is completely No Nonsense. And on sale, this accessory is a complete no-brainer if you're needing to up-your-game or just needing to replace a worn mic you've had for a while...

    Highly recommended!

    Good On-Camera Shotgun Mic

The Shure VP83 LensHopper has a strong durable metal body. This gives it a solid feel, but adds a little weight to it. Overall size is small compared to other similar style on-camera condenser microphones. I was overall pleased with the audio quality of voice with the mic. In my testing, off axis audio sources were picked up a little more than I would have liked. For example, when I was 90 degrees directly to the left or right side of the mic, the volume of my voice should have been significantly reduced. The volume of my voice was reduced, but not as much as I have come to expect from supercardioid microphones. It uses one of Rycote's lyre suspension systems. It's good for an on-camera mounted mic to help reduce noise from camera movement. Rycote is known for quality suspension systems and this one is no different. This was a good choice by Shure for the VP83. You can use one AA, NiMH, or lithium battery in it. The runtime varies depending on which type of battery is used. 1 AA battery will last up to 130 hours of runtime. Unfortunately, it doesn't have auto on/off. The mic requires that you turn it on and off each time. Some people will forget to turn off the mic at some point and end up returning it to the camera bag while it is still powered on. The power light is a bright green, so maybe that will reduce the chances of forgetting to turn it off. The power light lights up green when you have 100% down to having 13 hours of battery life left with an Alkaline battery. Once it gets down to 13 hours of battery life left, the light will turn red. This should give you ample time to get to a stopping point to change out the battery. The indicator turns red when you have 2 hours left when using a NiMH battery and when you have 1/2 hours left when using a lithium battery. The mic has a low cut filter that helps reduce noise at 170 Hz and lower. The power switch has 3 positions: Off, On/Low Cut Filter, and On. This makes it easy to turn on for the filter when you need it. There is also a gain switch which allows you to select 3 gain settings: +20 dB, 0 dB, and -10 dB. The gain and power switches are easy to enough to move to the positions you want so I had no problems there. It does come with a foam windscreen which works ok, but if you are going to be in breezy conditions, you may want to get a dead cat. I tested the mic in 3-5mph wind and found that there was too much wind noise with just the foam windscreen. According to Shure, the A83-FUR Rycote Windjammer will work with the VP83 and you can replace the foam windscreen if needed (Part# A83W). It has a brass cold shoe instead of plastic. This probably adds a tiny bit of weight, but is more durable than plastic. The 3.5mm audio cable is built in. I'm not sure how you would change out the cable if it were to be cut/pinched and needing to be replaced. The upside is that you won't ever loose the cable. Cable quality is good and the 45 degree angled 3.5mm connector worked out great with both of my cameras. It has a 1/4" hole on the bottom. Most on-camera mics will have a 3/8" but the VP83's 1/4" mount point will allow you to mount the mic on many common mini tripods where as with most mics having a 3/8" mount point you would have to get a 3/8" to 1/4" adaptor. That is a nice feature and thankfully Shure thought ahead on that. I would recommend this mic, but would also recommend getting the dead cat for it if you are going to be recording in breezy or windy conditions.

    Pros:

    Durable Metal Body

    Brass Cold Shoe Mount

1/4" Mount Point (bottom of cold shoe)

    Rycote Lyre Shock Mount

    Audio Quality

    Run Time

    Bright Power Light

    Low Battery Indicator

    Low Cut Filter

    Small Size

    Cons:

    No Auto On/Off

Picks up off-axis audio sources a little too much

    Built-in Cable

Excellent microphone for my mirrorless camera.

Nothing gives a good video an amateur feel as much as lousy sound. The built-in microphones on even the best of today’s DSLRs and mirrorless cameras are too small to properly capture quality sound and can’t help but pick up every bit of camera noise.

On the other hand, strap a great microphone to the top of your rig, set it up properly and you can bring your videos to a whole new level. This Shure VP83 “LensHopper” microphone is a huge step up from the built-in microphone on your camera and has some fantastic tricks up its sleeve. After I took the microphone out of the box and felt how sturdy and well-made it is, I started to get a good idea for what an improvement it was going to make in my videos. I attached it to the hot shoe on my camera, plugged it into the microphone input (make sure your camera has a mic jack!), flipped the power switch to turn it on with the low pass filter engaged (middle setting on the power switch) and set the gain to “0”. I did a little sound check with the camera and microphone about four feet in front of me and was surprised to see the indicators pop up into the red. I flipped the gain switch down to “-10” and I was set to record a short test video. Wow was I impressed with the results! The sound was crisp and clear with no background noise whatsoever.

Moving back from the camera/microphone several feet, I was finally able to set the gain back up to “0” on the microphone without distortion. I haven’t had the need to set the gain up to “+20” yet, but I can see the need if you’re trying to catch a quiet or distant sound. For my purposes the lower gain settings are just perfect.

The design with built in shock mount and metal body is incredibly sturdy, the switches feel like they will hold up and the foam cover (non-removable) does a good job of minimizing pop and wind noise. For really breezy outdoor shooting, you might want to invest in a fur windscreen, which is sold separately. The only thing I could think of to complain about are the three-position switches. I will always find myself wanting the middle setting and flipping back and forth past it a few times before I dial it in. It’s a minor quibble, though. People with more manual dexterity than I have will likely not even notice.

Finally, I wish I could say something definitive about battery life, but I’ve only had the microphone for a week and haven’t managed to kill a single AA battery yet. I have no idea how long a single battery will last, other than to say it’s a surprisingly long time.

In all, this is a truly excellent microphone to mount to the top of your DSLR or mirrorless video-shooter and get some great sound without a lot of weight or bulk. One AA battery will last a lot longer than your collection of memory cards ever could and a backup AA battery is easy to carry around, giving you at least another week of backup power. I’m beyond thrilled with this little microphone!

Perfect balance between price and features

This shotgun style microphone is thoughtfully designed with everything you want and without things you don’t need.

    Pros:

    • Light even with a full metal body

    • Premium feel

    • Easy gain and low-cut filter switches

    Cons:

    • Foam windscreen is tough to place on and off

    • Manual is lack luster

First impressions are that Shure makes high quality mics. The body of the LensHopper is metal and the shock absorbing mount is well thought out. The battery compartment is super easy to access and can be opened while mounted on a camera. The mic feels substantial in the hands without overweighing your camera down.

The manual isn’t very helpful but you will need to essentially turn down the gain within your camera and use the gain control on the mic instead. This will help eliminate any unwanted noise and the Shure LensHopper performs exceptionally well. It may not perform as well as a wireless bodypack but 1000x better than the camera’s built in mic.

I do recommend the LensHopper for any level Vlogger due to the simplicity and design. Just 2 buttons and it just works. No frills but gets the job done!

    Loud & Clear

I use a Sony Handycam AX43 4K camcorder when I film and I really didn't feel like I even needed a condenser mic until I got this VP83 LensHopper. The sound quality is and reach is above all my expectations. Just connect, power up and shoot your video. The condenser drowns out a lot of the background disturbance, while recording. It picks up the my voice with incredulous acuracy when I'm in front of the mic on the basic settings . Itcan be turned up to reach further or turned down for less white noise. I have nothing but positive things to say about this mic. It runs off 1 AA battery( included) and is very light-weight, making ot very easy to pack around. I can mount it directly to my camcorder or to whatever gimple mount you may have. If you stand behind it while speaking, you'll notice it through the recording, as it is a forward facing mic aiming at catching whatever sounds are in its path. It's well built and has shock obsorbers built right on it to keep from having that rattling noise in your videos. This is a really good purchase. I recommend it to anyone with a mic mount on thier camera. It literally fits just about every cam with a mic mount option. Get this thing.

Great addition to my Sony ZV-1

I've gotten into the practice of recording video with my Sony ZV-1 camera, but the audio quality on the built-in microphone has always been a concern, especially shooting outside. I have a Shure MV7 that I use on my iMac at home, and have been happy with it's performance, so I felt good trying out the VP83 LensHopper.

I was happy to learn that even though it's marketed towards people using DSLR cameras or audio recorders, the VP83 worked great on my ZV-1. The mount piece appears to be a standard size and fit snuggly into the bracket on my ZV-1. The VP83's sole connection is a 3.5 aux line. If you're connecting it to a camera, then the cable is probably fine, but if you're connecting it to a dedicated audio recorder, then you'll probably need some kind of extension cable.

The controls on the VP83 are fairly straightforward. There's only 2 toggle switches on the back: the top one controls the amount of gain and the bottom one controls the power to the mic. The top toggle's gain settings go from a +20 dB boost, flat (0 dB boost) or -10 dB cut. In my uses, the -10 cut produced the better sound when recording someone with a louder voice. If you're dealing with someone quiet, you'll probably want to use the +20 setting. When I tried the +20 setting at home, there was a ton of extra white noise.

It runs off a single AA battery, and I was a little concerned when I first set it up because the battery casing seemed to not want to accept the battery, but after some gentle wiggling, it went in fine.

The overall design of the VP83 is geared towards people who need a better mic than what's built into their camera or recorder, but don't want to go into analysis paralysis with extra features. This is pretty much a set-it-and-forget-it type product, which I appreciate because it makes the learning curve much smaller.

All in all, I'm happy with the microphone. It works for my use case of making videos on my ZV-1 and the audio comes out cleaner than the built-in microphone. Only downside to this is there's no extra aux connection for headphones to monitor sound, so if you're shooting outside, I recommend doing a test recording first, listen to the playback, and then record what you intend to.

I learned that the hard way, shot my first video and had to redo it because I didn't realize how it sounded until I got home and started editing the video.

Perfect for Run and Gun setup

Shotgun microphones are popular microphones used when you want a small and lightweight setup for run and gun video. There are a couple things that make this microphone stand out from the rest. The first is size. It seems to be just the right size and weight to work on any camera and not add much extra weight or get in the way. I was even able to use this microphone on a GoPro Hero 9 with media mod and it did not get in the way of the video. The next thing I liked about this Shure mic is that it is powered by a single AA battery. There is nothing like shooting video and running out of battery in your Microphone. I am not sure how long the battery will last but either way if you keep a few extras you should be fine. It powers on via a switch on the Back and this could be the only downside is that there is no auto on/off so if you leave it on you could drain the battery. Or forget to turn it on before shooting and have no audio. Overall it has a simple design with only a power button and a switch for +20, 0, and -10 db. The Rycote mounting system is great so that it can freely move around without noise getting into your video. The only downside is that my Mic is slightly off to the side and it appears the Rycote system was compressed in packaging (picture below). It is only slightly deformed and does not change how it functions so I think it is alright. The last thing I will mention is the sound quality. I tested it on multiple cameras and the sound quality is much better than any built in microphone. I would highly recommend this to anyone who wants to up the audio in their videos and make professional quality videos. Having great audio can make or break if people want to watch a video.

Sony’s answer to Rode Wireless GO

I purchased the Rode system before I even had a chance to get my hands on the Sony version. Comparing the two, I really like the Sony system, but the Rode system has one nicer thing about it. It is that the gain adjustment on the Rode is located on the receiver, so if you need to make an adjustment, you can do so from your camera. The gain adjustment for the Sony is on the transmitter, so you can’t adjust the gain when you’re already rolling. One other benefit of the Sony is that the receiver can run on the hot shoe of Sony cameras. I really like how small and portable both systems are. I especially like how the Sony receiver and transmitter attach together so that losing one of them is harder, although if they are attached and you lose one, they’re both gone. Another big thing is price. The Sony gear was about $20 less. (You have to buy the lavalier mic separately for both systems, 280 before tax for Rode, 260 before tax with Sony) Another downside to the Sony is that the mic on the lavalier looks rather bulky, especially when you put on the pop filter. But it also has a rotatable clip and interestingly enough, it has a specific left and right channel. With the Rode lavalier, it is lower profile, but you do have to remove the pop filter in order to change the clip direction, and it can be fairly difficult to get that off. Although the lavalier needs to be bought separately, both systems’ transmitters are microphones already and come with addition pop filter if you don’t want to go the lavalier route. (It just won’t look as clean) I tested the connectivity for both and both seem to perform equally as well. The last area the Sony had the Rode beat out is more options on the receiver. (Minus the gain adjustment I mentioned earlier) You have the option to run the mic analog or digital, although the digital setting was not compatible on my a7iii, which it may just need a firmware update; I’m not sure. But, there is also the option to run the the transmitter as the mic, the receiver as the mic, or a mix of both. Both come with an optional short TRS cable and carrying cases, although I’m a fan of Sony’s more, because it’s a larger velvet sack that can fit everything. You’d have to get a separate one for the Rode system to fit everything. Last thing I will mention is that the gain on the Rode is naturally higher than the Sony. At the highest gain on the Rode, it almost sounded like I was about to shout. On the Sony system, the highest gain was more normal sounding and went down from there. Maybe it’s brand loyalty to Sony, but I really like the Sony more overall, however, the one thing I can’t get past is the gain adjustment being on the transmitter instead of the receiver.

    Good Mic but Short Cord

This mic is good and brings the quality that you expect from Shure, one of the best microphone manufacturers in the world. My only problem is that the cord is too short. I tried to find one with a longer cable but none available and so far I haven't found an extension.

This is a problem when you want to record a subject a little further away than the cord will allow. People will say that I should use wireless mics instead but I tell those people, "Hey People, I don't have the bucks to buy a wireless mic with the audio quality of this one. So get off my back."

Anyway, that's my review. The mic is good. The cord's too short.

Get this if you buy the Rode videomicro microphone

If you buy a RØDE VideoMicro On-Camera Cardioid Condenser Microphone, you'll need to buy this adapter. I'm so glad that I bought my microphone at my local Best Buy store and that the sales clerk told me that I need to purchase adapter. I wouldn't have known. It would have been nice if it was included with the microphone. But, all in all, this adapter does what it's supposed to do.

With the adaptor it ended the chance of the headphone being accidentally hit and damaging the headphone and/or the device it was plugged into. Several of the devices i use do not the

Bluetooth option so direct connection is my only choice. With the adapter the chance this damage is eliminated.

Bought it for my iPhone 8 for backup audio recording using a micro mic. But silly me, I lost the 3.5 adaptor so now it’s just collecting dust on the shelf. Borrowed this product few years back and paired it with my iPhone 5. Worked fantastic but now it’s just good for other devices which I don’t own that has a 3.5 jack input. Not worth the $15 price tag though.

I really did not noticed a difference in the sound with this microphone. Or just maybe I wanted just to return it because I was broke lol. No really I did notice a difference in my volume having the microphone on my camera or off. Not to say it did not work because of the quality of my camera. However it sure did make my camera look more expensive and professional.

Best Microphone EVER buy for my DSLR

After read a lot and see a few videos to find the right Mic for my DSLR i found this amazing mic to replace the built-in mic of my dslr. I realized that in order to eliminate ambience sound/noise I needed to get a shotgun mic so i buy Rode videomic and with my Canon 70D is the perfect combo for all my audio recording needs. You can also connect the video mic directly to your dslr camera but you will not be able to monitor the audio levels, unless of course your camera has a designated headphone output BUT with the Zoom H1, you can monitor the audio levels from the videomic. I also purchased the Sescom LN2MIC-ZOOMH4N 3.5mm Line to Mic cable to be able to route the ouput audio from the Zoom H1 to the camera. I noticed that by using this cable it reduces hiss noise. If you're looking into buying the Rode videomic, definitely go for the Rycote Lyre Mount. It is sturdy. No need to replace rubber bands unlike the previous Rode model. I have the videomic attached to a ALZO Multi-Mount and it does reduce noise and I can't barely hear the camera lens. Hope this feedback can help some of you out there. Of course there are other better shotgun mics out there, but under $200 the Rode videomic with the Rycote Mount is a great choice if your budget is tight,BEST choice you can ever make !

Made big difference on one camera but not another

I got this to use with my new Canon VIXIA HF G50 4K Premium Camcorder, but it turned out the camcorder's native microphone actually got better sound quality than this external mic. But, when I put it on my older camcorder, it made a huge difference and gave much better sound. So I guess it depends on what camera you want to use it with.

    Excellent entry level microphone

I am not an expert on sound engineering so I can't compare this to other models but I needed it for a simple video project and I really liked it! In the room there was a loud clock ticking but it didn't pick it up and distract from the talking in the video. Overall I am very pleased with it and would recommend it! The only negative I have so far is the the battery case seems like a cheaper quality plastic, I was just surprised of what it felt like.

    OK for small space

I purchased this as an alternative to my Rode Wireless Go system. I liked the idea of two transmitters with one receiver. The quality of the connection just does not compare to the Rode Wireless Go, so I returned it and got a second Rode set instead.

I think it would work fine for interviews in a controlled, small space. But the connection gets lost too easily when subjects are moving.

Good! Used for rehearsals & street recordings

Lots of field use. Works great for quick recordings (rehearsals, no crew, etc,) and also used transitory use (street news).

I have a very high boom microphone for my professional work when working with a crew.

Good for amateur and work where high fidelity isn't required.

Avoid at all costs -- massive interference

Microphone has no shielding and picks up wifi and bluetooth interference from nearby devices -- so unless you're going to the jungles, miles away from anything electrical, your audio will sound terrible. Rode has known about this problem for years yet continues to sell this mic without offering a fix....and it can be mostly fixed. You only need to tape aluminum foil to the back of the mic to shield it. Why would you pay this much for a mic and then have to wrap it in foil to get it to work? Rode, this is bad.... Why do you keep selling this mic for years despite knowing this limitation?

    Decent Mic

Great shoe mount mic. It’s really good for small productions by yourself, but I’ve noticed a weird high pitched electronic noise on my videos sometimes when using it. It’s still better than the built in one, so it’s well worth it imo

Besides the fact that it looks semi professsional. It’s perfect. Great enhanced audio and works perfectly with the go pro 9. Had it connected at universal studios and I was asked to remove it because there is no professional recording equipment allowed. Well it’s not but it at least sounds professional

I'm a beginner so what do I really know.

I just go this to add sound to a few videos for work. I'm new to this so its possible that I missed a setting somewhere in setup. The interference with this is intense. Again I have to point out that I'm a novice so there could be something I missed in setup. I'm doing this review to inform other consumers of my experience and (hopefully) get a response that has a resolution. Thank you for your time.

Tested on a A7II. It is much better than the built in mic and adds a zoom function as well. If you have a camcorder with a multi-interface shoe under a door, a bumper is included.

The zoom function does not work with all cameras. Check Sony's documentation for more details.

This microphone is perfect if you are interviewing someone, as it will lower the voice of the person behind the camera, and slightly raise the voice of the person in front. It only works on the Sony HX-400 in one setting called GUN, NOT for long distance ZOOM.

    Did the job!!! Happy customer.

I purchased two of these to amplify a dulcimer into some speakers located 100 feet away and needed to keep the latency very low - which is not possible over bluetooth. This setup (2.4 GHz Radio) worked very well. The only "negative" would be not being able to get more amplification on the microphone input side - but it still sounded very nice with moderate volume (total of 360 watts of speakers).

They are durable, clear, NO STATIC !!, I can control when to unmute and mute, especially helpful while using ZOOM at work since my boss/teacher will unmute us at times when we aren't quite ready to speak yet! Comfortable comfortable comfortable !! Volume level is perfect for high and low mode. The button control lights up blue and is really, really cool, man !! It blinks for alerts and even has a button to click over and answer another call. I can always be heard and no set up required. Just plug it in and TALK!! OR LISTEN !! No apps or anything to hassle with! I would recommend you all don't waste your money on some super fancy pair like my spouse did for $50, and they are broken in less than one month! Perfect for what I need

I bought these 2 months ago to use with my phone and PC, for an online Spanish course I am doing. I wanted an over the ear headset with a decent mic. After 2 months of daily use, I can say they are ideal for what I want. They are also good for listening to music. My only, somewhat petty, observation, is that the lead, which is long enough for most scenarios, is prone to tangling. I have coiled mine up now to take up the slack I don't need, which has helped. That aside, you won't get a better product for 20 bucks anywhere. Highly recommended.

It can also be connected to smartphones and tablets with an included cable and dramatically improves the sound quality of your mobile productions. . . The all metal construction and precision cut body of this microphone is a work of art. The size makes it ideal for use with small format DSLR, Mirrorless and video cameras as well as smaller mobile devices. Its ultra-compact size allows the mic to be placed in areas that larger shogun mics just won’t fit.. . Using the Vmic Mini is incredibly simple. You just plug it in and you’re done. There are no batteries to install or charge, and there are no buttons or switches to operate. It’s truly plug-and-play. A great choice for anyone creating video content on a budget but looking for high-quality gear. Vmic Mini is a lightweight and ultraportable shotgun microphone that will give all of your videos excellent sound.. . A stand out feature of the Vmic Mini design is the unique microphone shockmount. The integrated shockmount of Vmic Mini is robust and features a sleek, sweeping and stable design. . . An advanced uniquely designed bullet like windscreen is included, giving the Vmic Mini its unique and interesting look. It features a sturdy gasket which aids in blocking wind noise, helps to protect the microphone from things like weather and dust, and keeps it securely fastened in place while on the go.. . Every aspect of the Vmic Mini’s design is top notch, and the built-in locking camera shoe features a metal 1/4 20 tripod thread at the base that gives you near limitless mounting options. Two output cables are included: one that connects to cameras, and another that connects to the headphone jack of smartphones and tablets. Great option for your recording projects

I bought this mic instead of the RODE Videomicro on camera microphone - Why? This mic is metal construction, comes with a TRS to TRRS cord, which allows you to use the mic with your cell phone, tablet, etc. The cord would have been an extra $15 purchase, if I had bought the RODE mic. The sound recorded with my Galaxy S8+ is great, which will be nice for Facebook Live Streaming on the go! The shock mount looks better than the one that comes with the RODE and it works very well using the 1/4" tripod mount or a Hot Shoe Flash Mount found on many camera tops and my JOBY tripod accessory (See Pic). You will have to be patient and careful when putting the wind screen on as it is a bit tight at the mic entrance point on the screen, which is a rubber stretchy port (See pic). I would not hesitate buying another of these mics.

    Lives on my camera

For the price this is a really good deal. I used to buy really expensive ones and they would sometimes not turned on and I would have like a bunch of clips that have no audio. And now whenever I fire up my camera this audio I don't have to turn on the mic there's no on button no off button it just flows. Like when I used to use Amazon ones there was this button that you had to push to start recording sound and guess who always forgets to push that button. This guy here has years of footage that's in the silence but not with this one this one here this mic right here can't go any better. For the price of course.

Overall this has been probably the best value shotgun mic that I have used. I love that the cable coming out of the mic is a detachable in case something happens to it, or just to be compatible with different devices.

My only gripe, and this might just be something in my case, but it seems to pick up a high pitch whine whenever I use it in certain end or situations. I don't know if this is just wireless interference, or something else. Whenever I don't experience that the quality is pretty much exactly what I expect.

The reason I think this might be wireless interference is because in my situation in an apartment it does pick up that noise stronger some places versus others, but when I've used it in different locations I haven't heard it at all.

Great for v-meeting, family movie, vlogging!

This was the best addition I've made to my Canon DSLR! The camera shoots great video, indoors or out, and now it picks up the sound FAR better than the built-in mic. I've used it for live broadcasting, family movies, and at my desk with virtual meeting platforms. I love it!

    Great little portable mic!

It took me awhile to figure out that the two cables it comes with were not the same (one is for cameras and the other is for phones if I remember correctly) but other than that, it works great!

Works as intended, but can pick up wind noise

The microphone plugs directly into my DLSR and when used indoors works great. Despite the windscreen, it picks up a lot of wind noise outdoors.

As advertised, it does improve significantly over the built in camera microphone.

    GoPro and Osmo Pocket Approved!

The best thing I like about my Osmo Pocket and my GoPro Hero 7, is that they can do some pretty impressive things for being so small. Both of those companies require you to buy their adapter for a mic, but this mic works super well with them. I like being able to tilt it towards me if I'm filming myself, and the other way when filming others.

    Works well

This mic is pretty much universal for computers or phones. I used it with a stereo extension cable and my PC. Very sensitive microphone with decent quality. It will be an upgrade over most standard phone or PC mics.

The mic can come apart fairly easily, so I will call the build quality a negative. It would come apart in your pocket probably.

    Great mic

I was truly surprised that this mic could record the sound it did. I originally bought it to record my daughter's performance in a musical that was in a church with extremely poor acoustics. Many kids weren't individually mic'd and the music overpowered their voices. I placed the mic onto my ipad on a tripod in the back of the church, and was shocked at how good the recording was.

    Solid Mobile Mic

I purchased this for a last minute mini-doc I was asked to film - it was my first project of such and I didn't want to rely on my phone microphone, or I at least wanted to have options. This condenser mic did the job, I used it for a handheld interview portion. Would recommend for amateur filmmakers, or mobile filmmakers. The only negative is that I can't use it simultaneously while my phone is in the gimbal.

    Meh on usability

I went back and forth on whether to purchase this microphone. Because it was a RODE that receives such great reviews, I broke down and finally purchased it. I must say that I am not impressed at all. I thought having an IOS compatible microphone for my iPhone would be awesome, however, the fur windshield blocks a lot of the screen including the button for activating the recordings. I use my phone for podcasting and other things, and it's just more cumbersome than it is worth. I had broken my Samson Condensor microphone when it tipped over, but it has an IOS adapter and I loved it. For RODE, the microphone isn't as clear as I like and even with the windscreen, the clarity is much better on the Samson so I've decided to repurchase that one instead.

Quality Recording from a Light & Portable Package

    ==== Summary ====

The Samson Go Mic Mobile is a great mobile recording device with excellent audio quality, flexible mounting & connection options, and long battery life. It is ideally suited for YouTubers, Vloggers, and both casual- and prosumer-level audio & video productions.

    *Pros:

-Flexible & versatile audio connections available.

-Comes with all necessary accessories & tools to get started recording right away.

-Offers various mounting options for different recording equipments.

-Both the Go Mic Module Receiver & microphone Transmitter units are lightweight & easy to carry around.

-Comes with a nice, solid carrying case.

-Recording quality is great - much better than smartphone microphones.

-Receiver range is good & didn't drop any sounds (tested up to ~40 feet).

    -Works with iPhone seamlessly.

    -Long battery life.

    *Neutral:

-Losing line-of-sight results in slightly garbled audio.

-"USB Audio" function didn't work on any of my Android smartphones & their default "Camera" apps.

-The charging port on the GMM isn't USB Type C but the older mini-USB connector.

    *Cons:

-Compatibility with Android phones & their default "Camera" app is poor.

    ==== Design ====

The Samson Go Mic Mobile (GMM) is a cleverly designed recording equipment that is simple to operate, lightweight, and very versatile.

The adjustable mounting arm extends widely enough to easily clamp onto big phones such as my Galaxy S9+ and Galaxy Note 4. The rubber grips on the mounting arms offer secure holding power and the rotating knob locks tightly together the mounting arms to the attached device.

Thanks to the numerous accessories & tools included in the box, one can also attach the GMM to a tablet, a tripod, and a cold shoe adapter.

The rubber Power Button, which can also be used to pair the GMM with up to 2 different transmitters, is very tactile and responsive (one pre-paired transmitter is included in the box).

All the other control sliders on the GMM work equally well and are frustration-free.

I say that the Samson GMM is very versatile because it can connect up to 2 different transmitters, supports 3 different Analog Outputs, supports digital USB Audio for higher-quality audio recordings, and it can even output sound to an audio device such as headphones and speakers.

When it comes to compatibility with my phones, however, I had mixed results.

When I paired the GMM to my Galaxy Note 4 running 6.0.1 Marshmallow and used the default "Camera" app, I was not able to get any audio recordings. I had tried with both the 3.5 mm audio cable & the microUSB-to-microUSB cable through the USB Audio port on the GMM.

I also received no audio on my Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact (Android Pie 9.0) from its default "Camera" app when using the microUSB-to-USB Type C cable.

On my iPhone SE, recordings worked perfectly with the microUSB-to-Lightning cable and the default "Camera" app.

On my Galaxy S9+, audio recordings only worked when I used the 3.5 mm audio cable in the default "Camera" app.

On the Android side, choosing the correct third-party app that supports USB Audio recording is very important. It would've been nice if Samson had some app suggestions in the User Manual.

When it comes to charging the GMM receiver, it is done via a mini-USB cable and the AC adapter, both of which are provided. It would've been nice if the charging port was either microUSB or USB Type C instead. Still, it's no deal-breaker.

Connection strength between the GMM receiver to the transmitter was strong and instantaneous. I never once lost connection between the two during my video & audio recording sessions.

The transmitter, which runs on two AA batteries, is lightweight and easy to handle. The omni-directional Lavalier microphone, which connects to the transmitter, worked very well and recorded high-quality audio free of echos, static, and other noise.

Besides the issues of compatibility on some Android phones, the Samson GMM is a great product that offers flexible mounting options and direct connections to smartphones and other A/V devices for high-quality mobile video & audio productions.

    ==== Functionality & Performance ====

When testing the performance of the Samson GMM, I used my iPhone SE and my Galaxy S9+ with their respective default "Camera" apps.

On both devices, my voice sounded very clear and robust with no digital noise. It was clean, rich, and very clear. The quality of the recordings from the Samson GMM, when compared to smartphone microphones, was much, much better and of higher quality. There's simply no comparison. If you're serious about producing quality videos for YouTube or vlogging, you definitely want something like the Samson GMM. Your audience will appreciate the higher fidelity audio.

When it comes to transmitter range, I tested up to ~40 feet away from the receiver. At that distance, the audio recording quality was excellent and sounded fantastic. It sounded as if I was sitting right next to my smartphone.

I also tested the GMM by purposely losing line-of-sight from the receiver. When the distance between the GMM and the transmitter was below ~25 feet, the audio recording continued to work with no drop-outs. At about ~40 feet away, however, the audio recording had some garbled noise when line-of-sight was lost.

Overall, I'm very happy with the quality of the audio recording capability of the Samson GMM system.

    ==== Closing Thoughts ====

Despite some compatibility issues with some Android phones, I still like the Samson GMM a lot. Once I found the right combination of which type of audio connection to use & the appropriate recording app on my smartphone, producing high-quality audio and video was super simple and consistent. Samson has created a unique, versatile, and powerful audio recording system that I can easily recommend.

Great Tool To Make Professional Sounding Videos

The Samson Go Mic Mobile Lavalier system is a great step forward for those of us trying to make professional sounding videos right from our mobile phones.

When I make my YouTube videos, I used to rely on the microphone that’s built into my phone and the sound is never optimal. It bounces back and forth from left to right channel and gets louder or quieter based upon where I am standing in relation to the phone. Now I’m able to record video the exact same way on my phone, but the sound is picked up from the Samson Go Mic instead of my phone’s mic. The Go Mic is attached to my shirt, so it goes where I go and the sound remains even and clear. It also cuts down wind noise quite a bit. Such an improvement! I’m so glad that this product is out there for people like me. The mic transmits the signal to the receiver, which clamps to my phone. The receiver also has a screw hole in it so the whole thing can attach to a tripod.

The package comes with everything you need to make it work. It has cables for digital recording from ios or Android phones, as well as an analog cable to record through your phone’s headphone jack. I wasn’t able to get the digital cable to work with my Android phone, and the instructions gloss over how this may or may not work without a third party app, but it records just fine through the headphone jack. I wish the instructions were a little more thorough. After all, this product is intended for non-professionals who could use all the info they can get. If you are able to use one of the digital recording cables (which are usb type-c and lightning), you can hook up a pair of headphones for monitoring which is great.

Everything included comes in a very nicely made, compartmentalized case which looks like it will hold up well over time.

I wish this mic had a companion app which monitored audio gain for quick adjustments. There are third party apps out there that can do this, but it would be nice if Samson had its own.

Overall I am super happy with this mic and look forward to using it often.

    Samson Go Mic issues

The Samson Go Mic Mobile Lavalier Wireless mic system is a great concept. But here are some of the issues that I had while using it on a Canon 5DMkii DLSR.

During an interview, the audio cut out. A Samson factory support rep I spoke with said that it is possible that in a Wifi atmosphere that it is possible that the signal will get interference from 2.2-2.4 Gigahertz signals. Additionally, if the mic is not on a belt or in the open and under any clothing or at a distance to far from the camera receiver the signal cuts out.

    Portability, Reliable Mic

I have been in a market for a reliable mobile mic for when making videos and decided to try out the Samson Go Mic Mobile. As the name implies it is very mobile and was impressed at the amount of accessories it provided for easy connections.

    Pros -

    Mobility

    Accessories Provided

    Mounting Methods

    Mic Accuracy / Sensitivity

    Distance / Range

    Quality

    Cons -

    Battery Life

    Price

    Environmental Interference on Mic

    ::Setup ::

It was very easy out of the box to setup as all connections and unit is mostly charged. You will need to have 2 AA batteries for the belt pack Transmitter readily available as it does not come with it. Afterwards it is pretty much plug in play onto your device of your choice. I used my Note 8 and it connected , worked seamlessly.

    ::Mic::

The Mic works great indoors with the range being very impressive. I was able to go impressive distance without distortion. However when outdoors the mic is very perceptible to high winds / environmental noise so be sure to accommodate for that with voice recording software. The Mic itself is a simple one, with a clip that attaches easily to clothing that wont move / fall off. However the teeth on the clip is very sharp. I would caution on clipping directly to clothing as it will leave a mark or may ruin the nice fabric. A nice feature that I really liked was including a hidden tool inside the belt pack transmitter that allows for quick and easy adjustment to the gain. This came in very handy for windy days.

    ::Battery Life::

In my situation it felt as if the battery life was average. I am not sure if it was due to me testing for hours on end without a break or using software the amplify the Mic which results of more power usage. I decided not to remove a star on this as I do not feel "normal" usage would have an issue. One recommendation, I would NOT use rechargeable batteries. For some reason it caused odd interference with my belt pack transmitter or at times performance drops. I would recommend using reliable / good AA batteries.

    ::Accessories::

I was very impressed with the accessories it included along with the hard case to help protect your equipment. It even includes a section for a future long neck Mic if you decide to purchase one (Not Included. You are able to mount to a smartphone, mount to a tablet, mount to a Tripod and Mount as a cold shoe adapter.

Overall I have really enjoyed this product and would recommend it to anyone looking for a mobile Mic that has adaptability to whichever device you use.

Finally Utilize Your Phone's High Def Camera

Samson’s lapel microphone system is definitely worth it for any person who is unable to remain stationary in front of their camera while they record. The wireless range is listed at 100 feet, and while I didn’t test it at quite that distance, it did not have any trouble recording clear audio at any distance appropriate for filming / podcasting. It did a good job at recording through one or two walls. Line of sight eventually does become an issue, but I don’t think that this is truly a problem as the intended use is for video (where the subject is in view – which will definitely be less than 100 feet).

The system is designed with the iPhone in mind, but it will work for android devices, just not by using the USB C cable. I had read that users of the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 were able to record digitally (using the USB C cable), but I did not have any success with the native Samsung camera or voice-note apps. Android users will instead need to connect the receiver using the 3.5mm audio cable – which works well. The main difference being that you must disconnect the 3.5mm cable when playing back the video/audio as the phone will think you have headphones attached (due to the cable being plugged into the headphone jack).

The included lapel microphone works quite well and records clear audio (regardless of where on your shirt it is clipped). Even when it was attached to my shirt collar (tucked under my chin) the recording was perfectly clear. Though the microphone has a foam shield, it did not seem to block any background noise. I was able to hear footsteps, people talking in the background, and a fair amount of wind when recording outside.

I appreciate that the system comes with a nice case, but I was slightly bothered by the size. The case is designed to hold the lapel mic, the receiver, and also a full-size hand-held wireless microphone (the Samson HXD2) which is not included. The empty space for the full-size microphone almost doubles the size of the case. The full-sized HXD2 is nearly $100 on its own - and at that price, it should be the device that comes with the larger case. Or, perhaps there could be a free case that we could request by mail once we have purchased both. That way, those who only want the lapel microphone can have an appropriately small and portable case. I understand this is a small complaint, but it feels as though they are trying to push customers into spending the extra $100 on the full-sized HXD2 microphone.

Ultimately, I feel as though this kit is quite useful as it comes with everything you need. Not only does it do a great job at recording clear audio wirelessly to your phone, but it also comes with the attachments required to mount your phone to a tripod – making good use of the excellent cameras contained within most cell phones these days. Or, if you have a DSLR, you can use the system to record wirelessly to that device. All of the bases are conveniently covered.

    Great mic for any setup

This lav mic set is ready for almost any setup: camera mount, shoe mount or clamp on a smartphone. I used it with my Android phone and recorded audio while using my dslr to shoot. The audio was good and I was able to get ranges from 40+ feet away with line of sight. The quality of the audio was good too. Though, with this setup, you could use a different mic as well. The mic itself came with a windscreen, which may not sound like much, but are so helpful in the outdoors. The quality of the audio may not be the absolute best, but it's still good, and you could always upgrade the mic if you wanted to. The transmitter and receiver are well made and easy to use. And it comes with the necessary cables to connect to aost any device. It also comes with a nice case to house all the pieces.

Pros: loads of connection options, easy to use, good recording quality, good range

Cons: mic could be better, but is uogradable

    Not just for mobile

I create cooking videos and having a lavalier microphone was on my wish list to keep the vocals consistent. Along comes the Samson Go Mic Mobile. I record on a camcorder not a mobile phone but the clever group at Samson made this product usable by mobile phones, camcorders and DSLRs. It took a bit of playing but I got the mic locked in so it works great. I ended up turning the gain all the way down and setting the volume on the receiver to about 1/2 way. If I go with more volume then I'm pegging the meter on the video and getting distortion. I've recorded about an hour of video and it has been perfect except for one video where the sound dropped for about a second. It was definitely a shame but hopefully it's very rare. The majority of my work is done just a few feet from the receiver. I did do a quick distance test and it worked at least 20 feet away AND through a door.

Let me touch upon the hardware and packaging. The receiver feels solid but small and light. It has a rechargeable battery that's supposed to last 7+ hours. That's plenty enough for my needs. The receiver takes two AA batteries. I put in a pair of rechargeable batteries and other than the one drop mentioned above, it worked fine. The package contains all the wires and connections you'll probably need. It has cables to connect to Lighting, mini usb, 3.5mm and more. By default the receiver comes installed with the mount to fit on a mobile phone. The package comes with a teeny screwdriver that allows you to take off that mount and put on a hot shoe mount which is what I use for my cameras. So cool. The only issue I had was when I was using the camera hot shoe for my light. I then had to figure out how to mount the receiver. I was able to drop it in the hand grip which is fine if I'm not hand holding the camera. I'll need to figure out something more flexible though and it doesn't seem to be a fault of Samson.

Bottom line, this microphone is what I've been wanting and definitely delivers.

    Cheap USB mic

You get what you pay for I guess. This was the cheapest option they had and it had really poor quality sound if you're going to be filming in a setting with a lot of loud noise going on all around you. I had to make a second trip in the store because he guy that helped me find it gave me the iphone version even though I said about a dozen times I have a Samsung. But I didn't read the box either until I got out to my car so I guess that's just as much my fault lol

    Great for use with smartphone

So far works great, I'm using it with my samsung s21 ultra and have zero compatibility issues, all you need is a TRRS to Type-C for samsung or (Iphone charge port) dongle or adapter since the phones these days don't have headphone jacks. Make for certain its a TRRS 3 banded 3.5 mm headphone jack and not just a TRS 2 bands the difference is that extra section on the head phone jack is for microphone.

I noticed the BOYA seams to pick up the lower range better then the Rode which makes it perfect for my speaking voice. I'm making how to videos to go along with my in person classes and this fits the bill perfectly, the sound difference with this vs my in phone mic is night and day, went from sounding like a robot to a in person quality sound. If your waffling on which to get this is an incredible value for the price.

    Decent considering it's low price

The dynamic range of this BOYA MM1 Cardioid Condenser Microphone is not great, but it's OK. I've also noticed that the audio levels it produces are a bit low when recording on my smartphone, perhaps because the mic has no internal battery to boost the sound levels. However, you can probably boost the audio levels using a smartphone app or else boost them in post-production.

This mic comes with a removable "dead cat" windscreen. It also comes with two cords that have 1/8" connectors on each side.

One cord is for a normal audio input on a camera or audio recorder. The other cord, which has one side with a TRRS (tip, ring, ring, sleeve), is for use with a smartphone's 1/8" microphone/headphone input jack.

This mic also comes with mounting hardware (as seen in the product photo), but beware that the bottom of the mounting hardware has a screw hole but no screw coming out the bottom. So depending on your tripod or mount plate, you may need to get some kind of adapter or threaded connector. The mic also comes with a small, black carrying pouch.

All in all, it's a decent buy because the price is fairly low.

Cost was low about $30 but the quality of the build was extremely poor. The microphone holder (red) split when I popped it into place and then the jack plugin in the rear didn't hold the cable firmly it just kept falling out, no grip at all . . . save your money and buy a better brand. Do not recommend.

Use only to record. NOT for meetings.

Mic works - improves the audio quality BUT there is no speaker within. As much as I blame myself to not dig deeply before buying it, I didn't see a clear mention of 'No speaker function'. I have bought webcams and they come with mic and speaker function but this product disappointment me. Giving 3 stars because it does make sound better audible in meetings.

Since it’s listed as omni-directional I shouldn’t expect much from it, but it did fine with what I needed it to do, it is definitely not a directional mic but worked well in my phone and my iPad.
