Great NAS and easy to use

My second Drobo in 12 years. I love these NAS devices. They are so easy to setup and use. They make it easy for expanding to larger disk for more storage than the traditional NAS. Just pull the 1tb drive and slap a 2tb in. It auto rebuilds and distributes the space. Drobo's tech support has been great when I had to call them on my first drobo. They are a tad slow compared to normal NAS but not a show stopper for me.

    Slow, WILL NOT STREAM PLEX!!!

Bought this to replace a mac mini plex server that was using a USB 2 HD. This unit will not stream plex. Its so slow, that a 15 year old Mac Mini beats it. Do not waste time or money on this horrible piece of WD junk.

HDD Config users folder privileges in Great

I have purchased this disk after 5 previous ones including the 4T seeking capacity and web capabilities.

I only miss a software like like the Great Dropbox as part of it and I would buy 2 more to have a live backup at home and at the office.

The rest, speed and stability of the product is Great.

Quick & easy set-up + fast file transfer.

WD My Cloud EX2 Ultra storage is the way to go. This is my second of such WD external devices (an add-on to my home office NAS). The upgrade, beyond additional storage capacity, was a much faster file transfer rate and no delays with set-up. Simply set at RAID 1 (mirroring the two drives) and sleep at night. Great design WD!

    Overall good product

Setup instructions didn't work on Windows 10. Instruction included doesn't make sense !! No instructions on how to backup your computer or iphone. had to search internet for detail setup. If you are not tech savvy you could get stuck.

Does great. Fan is loud when indexing files

So I got this due to not being able to afford a Synology. I would have wanted to get a Synology drive over this. But for the money, I couldn't pass it up. I love it and it's not hard to use. there are some tweaks to the OS in it that I would have done but overall it's good. The one complaint is the fans run really high when you upload stuff for the first time due to indexing the files. Once they finish indexing then you are good. It only index's new files. If you have a lot of files to upload then it could be running and indexing and fans are loud for a day or 2 again depending on what size you're uploading. It worked me up during the night when I first got it and didn't know it at first till I googled it and that's what people were complaining about. But still like it. Have not used any apps on it yet. That's why I gave it 4 stars but still great and does what i need it to do.

I bought this for my file backup for both PC and phones. It works well and is easy to setup. The only issue I noticed is the fan noise. It is not that loud but definitely the loudest thing in my office room.

    Great value

Great small NAS box. I have it setup to mirror the drives and it works great. It's quiet and fast enough for my needs. Would be better if it had more of a cooling fan as it just radiates the heat out. Really like being able to set up to email or text alerts.

    Can't beat Western Digital

I had an older Linksys NAS that gave up the ghost. Needed something to store my media collection, had plenty of hard drives kicking around, did the research, and went with the WD My Cloud. I really like the setup instructions that came with it. Very clear, very little chance for confusion. It all went together easily. Configuring the device on my home network was a piece of cake.

    Fantastic for large storage

I bought this without hard drives only because none of the models with drives were in stock. Made a separate purchase of two 4TB Western Digital Red drives and put them in Raid 1. I wanted redundancy for my purposes. Once the drive is online, it just works. Lots of options and plenty powerful enough for storage. Also has options to runs apps. Plex is a nice option, but this unit can't transcode a lot of formats so you may run into limitations there. I don't use the cloud services and was really interested in access outside my home. Works great for access from a MAC or windows. TimeMachine backup works great as well.

    Nice Backup Device

I purchased the WD - My Cloud EX2 Ultra 0TB version after upgrading to a new desktop PC that didn't have room for two Western Digital high performance disks that I was previously using in a RAID configuration for backups. The fact you can buy the My Cloud EX2 with no disks (e.g. 0TB) is awesome as you can either use existing disks you have or decide which disks make sense for you.

The setup was mostly quite easy aside from the fact that the Microsoft Edge browser wasn't supported and I had to download Chrome. This might not be an issue for many but I personally like Edge and the fact it's included with Windows 10 and therefore on hundreds of millions of PC's, would make me think it should be supported by Western Digital.

This won't be an issue shortly as Edge is being updated to use the Chromium engine from Google Chrome.

I'd definitely recommend this to anyone wanting onsite local backups.

If you use OneDrive on your PC you may see warnings in the backups for files on OneDrive that you don't have locally. This is because the Western Digital software cannot back those up. Hopefully they will work with the Microsoft OneDrive team to fix this or imprve the experience.

EX2 Runs Great, But Drive Must Be Mapped to PC

So far, mechanically/electronically it works fine. I've managed to get all of my data loaded by mapping the drive to my laptop file directory. My only beef is that this is unlike the other great WD external hard drives, in that the instruction manual (download) and the quick set-up instructions (in-box) are too basic and other documentation is not helpful for anyone less than an engineer. If you use a PC, you are going to need to Google on mapping your EX2 to your computer file system. After completing that, it's easy. But nowhere does it tell you that this must be done.

    Great network storage solution

My old NAS drive (2TB) was running out of room and I decided to go big (or go home ;-) The WD EX2 Ultra came pre-configured as RAID-1. This means extra protection for sensitive files, but only 8TB of usable space. It also supports disk spanning and RAID-0. However, the disk interface also lets you reformat as JBOD ("Just a Bunch Of Disks") that allows access to all 16TB. Using JBOD each drive becomes a separate partitions.

Allowing remote access is a bit tricky since the disk is "self-certifying". In most browsers (I have tried IE, Chrome, and Firefox), attempts to connect for the first time are met with dire warnings about the validity of the certificate. Opting around the warnings finally gave me (and 3 family members) remote access. WD support assured me that there were no security issues either for the drive or the users.

    Great mass storage with redundancy

This a great product for beginners that need to store lots of data, have redundancy (not backup) and simple to configure. The My Cloud EX2 already comes configure in Raid 1 so of the 16TB, you have 8 TB of storage with 8 as redundancy. If one drive fails you just buy a new one, replace the bad one and it copies the files for you. And this version is upgrade-able to (2) 14TB hard drives.

    Perfect solution to at-home storage

Not the easiest to setup, but not the hardest thing I've ever setup. The device works perfectly, WD's website and tutorials are a bit confusing and took some time to navigate. I'd estimate it took me 10-12 hrs to setup. Mapping computers to recognize the device was a bit of trial and error, but ended up working out. I would say this is a intermediate device to setup.

not many NAS to choose from so got the WD EX4100

Under powered CPU for this NAS type of product. It runs under some kind of Cent OS Linux so something Debian like. It doesn't let you poke around at the OS level. Many 3rd party add on apps like Dropbox or Transmission, so it can run autonomously. No Snapdragon or ARM, just some kind of limited Intel Atom. Well built WD Red drives got the largest maxed out capacity ones but the rest of the product really lacks. Dual 1 Gig Ethernet that can link but doesn't work right. No 10Gb Ethernet.

Value wise I've seen better for the price, but this is what BestBuy carries.

I recently purchased this server. It is an investment but if you need a home server to store files, movies, music, etc., this is a solid option. The unit comes with 4 pre-loaded hard drives and is fairly easy to set up for non-computer savvy people. Once set up, you can easily access your data via your computing devices and/or streaming apps. Additionally, you can access files remotely via its Cloud functionality. It has worked smoothly and I haven't had any issues to date.

Nice concept that needs more options

Attractive design can be placed nearly anywhere

    Fanless ventilation is quiet

    Provides access to files anywhere

Backs up certain cloud storage and mobile devices

    Provides multi user access

Fingerprint login option to control access

Offers a dual drive option for improved file safety

    Setup is very easy

Remote access doesn’t require knowledge of networking

    Cons

Each user can only have one login per cloud system

No indication of progress of backups except email when complete

Can only backup photos and videos from mobile devices

Desktop program offers several applications without telling you they require a purchase

Legacy desktop program mostly just redirects to website

    No matching modern desktop application

Drive letter on desktop fixed at Y

No main account for viewing and controlling all files on drive

No option to encrypt all files on drive

No pin access control option like on mobile

Very limited compared to a traditional NAS

Software is overly basic and different between desktop and mobile

The Western Digital My Cloud Home is the latest iteration of a series of network-attached drives. With the addition of the name Home in the latest version of the product, there is no doubt should be left what audience Western Digital is targeting. Tech products for home typically have a greater emphasis on appearance. Although style is subjective, most would likely agree the My Cloud Home has a subtle and attractive design that most people would not object to placing out in the open. It has ventilation slots on the top and bottom to allow passive cooing, meaning no annoying sound of fans running. For the size, it feels quite heavy. Judging from what is visible in the cooling slots, it appears to be due to large heatsinks. Hopefully, this should translate to a long service life.

My Cloud Home seems to be more smartphone oriented which makes the initial setup easy but rather odd. The reason is that the unit comes with a setup card that includes an activation code. The sheet instructs you to set up the drive on a computer. It works just fine using the website on a phone but the process could use some refinement. If you have a previous generation My Cloud, you cannot use the old app. It is strange and confusing that the new unit, which shares many of the same features as the previous generation, requires a new and only slightly differently named app. There are a few extra functions which can be added including Plex, an import tool from a legacy My Cloud, and a backup tool for different cloud storage options.

You can configure the mobile app to backup your camera roll but not files stored on your mobile device. Cloud backup is a handy option to put final control of your OneDrive or Google Drive documents back in your hands. With each account, you can configure one of each type of cloud storage to download and backup onto your My Cloud Home. Once configured, your files will be downloaded for backup locally so if for whatever reason you lose access to your cloud storage you will still have your files. Unfortunately, there is no status of your sync provided except an email upon completion. Files are accessible via the app on mobile with photos and videos having a dedicate section that works fast but offers little organization. If you have many photos and videos, be prepared for a lot of scrolling. For traditional computers there is a program available although it is essentially a link to the My Cloud website and a list of programs you can install. What is not apparent is that most of the applications require a purchase of a product or subscription until you install them. Unfortunately, there is no corresponding modern Windows App in the store that is battery aware and touch friendly.

The software strives to keep things simple and to that end much the complication of standard file and folder sharing is not present. If you want to have the options to share the way it is done at work, this is not the one you will want. The way the system works is once the owner registers via email, others can be invited via email to use the My Cloud Home. Each account is separate from the others giving each person their own private space. Each user has a way to share files based on email accounts but options are much more limited.

If you have read this far, you will notice that each feature comes with what could be considered a negative. The My Cloud Home attempts to be simple but the problem is each feature seams either unfinished or overly basic. Overall, it is a solid unit with good performance. In testing, it backed up 125GB from a OneDrive account in less than a day. Stability was good with no occurrences of lockups or freezes. Remote access worked without any special knowledge required greater than entering in an activation code. If you are looking for a network storage for home with advanced features, it might be best to wait and see how Western Digital updates the software or use another option. If your main need is for a hands off device to backup your important files, the My Cloud Home will happily work in the background without needing any further work.

Easy, quick, flexible storage for most home users

I recently installed a Western Digital My Cloud Home 4 TB for testing purposes. This is a single drive, home backup system for PCs and mobile devices. It is a very easy solution to setup for most home users that have simple backup requirements.

Your data is actually stored in multiple locations: your device/pc, the WD MyCoud Home device, and in the WD MyCloud online storage solution. If you don’t already use solutions to backup your phone photos/videos, this device is drop-dead simple to setup and a must have to keep your memories safe!

Seriously – just plug it into your home network, create your free WD account, install the app on your mobile device(s) or PC(s) and start backing your stuff up! I can’t tell you how many people have asked me to recover photos or lost them because they’ve lost their phone! Unless they’ve got a recent backup, they are out of luck! Just setup the “Auto Backup” to automatically backup your photos to our MyCloud Home device so they are protected. If you don’t have unlimited cellular data – no worries, you can configure it to only use Wifi for the auto backups!

Another cool feature is the ability to backup your other cloud services like Dropbox, Google Drive, Facebook photos, etc. Now you have them all in one place (well two including the cloud) nad are safe and secure!

There are lots of features that I haven’t setup up yet – like PC backup,Desktop Sync, Plex (music, videos, etc) and IFTTT.

I would definitely recommend the dual hard drive option (the Duo) versus a single drive option – after all the purpose of the device is to make sure you don’t lose data.

    Easy and Simple Cloud Storage

The Western Digital My Cloud Home is the company's latest offering in personal cloud storage solutions. It's a small, compact rectangular, unassuming device measuring 6-7/8” high x 2-1/8” wide x 5-1/2” deep, with a stylish two tone color of white and metallic silver plastic exterior housing the spinning hard drive inside the unit. Yes, it is a spinning drive. It would have been nice if it were an SSD drive, but that would have cost a lot more. The unit must connect directly to a wireless router via an ethernet cable. The cable is included in the box. The cloud drive is powered by an ac power adapter.

The My Cloud Home is a feature rich personal cloud storage device. I will highlight some of the prominent features and functions (the positives) I found to be most useful as well as some of the things I did not like (the negatives).

    Positives

+Easy and simple to set up. Plug in the power, connect the supplied ethernet cable from the Cloud Home to your router, proceed to mycloud.com/hello webpage to create an acccount. The next steps are simply to download the My Cloud Home app from the Google Play or Apple App store. You're done.

+Versatility: You have three options to back-up and sync data. Use the mobile app, use a web browser to access the MyCloud.com web based app, or use the desktop app.

+Automatically syncs and back up photos and videos from your phone onto the drive. Depending on the speed of your wireless connections, the My Cloud Home quickly makes a copy of the photo onto the drive. You don't have to worry about running low on storage on your phone.

+Syncs online cloud content from Dropbox, Google Drive, One Drive, Google Photos, Box, and Facebook. Once I granted permission for the file transfer, all of my Google Drive documents and Google Photos pictures all magically copied over to the Western Digital Cloud Home drive.

+Files from a desktop or laptop computer are also easily synced. Using either the desktop app or the web based app, files can easily be moved by dragging and dropping in the Windows desktop environment. With the Desktop app you have the most flexibility in the Windows environment. You can do things you normally would do like sort by filename, by date, by size, open and delete files, re-name files etc. The My Cloud Home drive functions like an external hard drive, only it is not physically connected to your computer, but wirelessly through your router.

+Allows multiple users to create accounts where the data is private so that users do not have access to each others data unless they provide permission to share it.

    Negatives:

    - No power button on the drive. You can only remotely power down the My Cloud Home using the Shut Down function on either the mobile app or the MyCloud.com web based app. Once powered down, the only way to turn it back on is to unplug the device and plug it back in. There is no way to remotely power on the drive. Would be nice to be able to power on and off remotely so that the drive isn't constantly running.

-No standby mode. Since the drive functions as a personal server, it remains on and continuously spinning until you power it down. If the drive is on all the time and spinning, this brings into question the longevity and durability of the unit.

-The mobile app syncs only photos and videos from the phone. All other files do not sync. This means that if you have any text documents, spreadsheets, or pdfs on your phone, there is no simple method to sync or upload to the My Cloud Home. I could not find a way to manually upload a non-picture/non-video file to the My Cloud Home using the mobile app. Western Digital should fix this via an app update.

-You cannot use the drive by plugging it into your host computer like you would with an external hard drive. If for some reason your internet wifi connection is down, you have no way of accessing your data from the My Cloud Home. Western Digital should consider including a way for dual functionality as both a Cloud drive and as a traditional external hard drive.

-Simple set up, but no supplied user manual. You must find and download the user manual online at Western Digital's MyCloudHome product webpage.

In summary, the Western Digital My Cloud Home provides the ease and flexibility of having your own personal cloud base storage solution and a viable alternative to 3rd party online cloud based storage such as Google Drive, Drop Box, and many others. There is good value in having your own personal home based cloud since you are able to access all of your digital content anywhere in the world without the storage limitations imposed by cloud service providers. Plus you have the comfort of knowing that all your precious digital content is stored in your home network cloud drive instead of in some server half-way around the world. Despite some of the minor negatives that I listed above, the My Cloud Home is a very good drive and the negatives should not deter you from making it one of your top considerations.

Remote Access and Fast Data Backup

The ultimate backup. The unit works great. Eay to set up. My wife and I are able to backup all of our images and videos from our smartphones and Digital Cameras the moment we walk in the door of our home seamlessly especially while not having any of our computers turned on.

Also being able to access our files from the web using a VPN at any time makes everything so simple and safe.

    Useful

Potentially very useful product. I bought this to replace a hard drive I had connected to my router through a usb cable, and then I accessed wirelessly through the router and wifi. Apparently that's not the kind of thing people do any more as when I replaced my router I couldn't find one that would connect to the hard drive through a usb cable and was unable to kludge together a connection using various transition fittings. I found this personal cloud drive as an alternative for my hard drive and eventually was able to use it for my purpose. WD made it very easy to transfer the data from my hard drive-albeit WD's instructions on its web page weren't always clear and some of their internal links to further instructions were expired links, so it required some help through WD customer support. The support tech was helpful, but the only method of communication allowed was online chat and not telephone, so there were some communication problems. Also, (and it's possible I simply haven't yet discovered the correct and easier way to do this) saving data to the cloud drive requires me to access my cloud account dashboard (my term, not their's) on my computer or other device, and then from within my account dashboard find the data file wherever it is (e.g., saved on my computer or other device) and then save it to my cloud drive-this requires me to save the data file someplace (on my computer or other device, usb drive, etc) and copy that data to my cloud drive. Using my old hard drive, on the other hand, I could save a pdf or other data file directly from its original source to my remote hard drive without saving it first-this was particularly useful when saving pdfs of books from Gutenberg or archive for example, or other files downloaded from the internet. So, with some workarounds the cloud drive can do what I want, it just isn't as easy to use as my previous system for most of what I want to use it for; there are some features, such as remote access from anywhere through the internet rather than only when in range of my prior router, that for some will be better than my old system-it's just that the advantages I am presently aware of don't totally offset the disadvantages I am currently dealing with.

Anyway, with some workarounds, the cloud drive is usable for what I want even if it doesn't do so as conveniently as my prior system. But inasmuch as the hardware for my prior system is no longer available, the Personal Cloud fills my needs adequately and so is useful.

    Not like a NAS.

First one that connects by LAN to network. Thought it was going to be like a NAS, but was a little different. Haven't used it too much yet. Don't like that it is based mainly on photos and videos and files. Can't just mass copy from folders on PC to this.

    EXCELLENT BACKUP

This product is fantastic. I love that I can upload anything from my computer, phone, ipad, etc. from anywhere. Love the ability to upgrade storage, love that it saves my data on two different drives, etc. Upload speeds over wifi seem excellent, given the bad internet speeds in my area. The only downfall so far is the app - crashes all the time. Wish you could power down the drive remotely.

Much better than My Cloud Personal Cloud Storage

I original bought the "WD - My Cloud Mirror 4TB Personal Cloud Storage" and to me that should be taken off the shelves and have this one replace it. The other one did not have nearly enough memory/processing power for the features that were supported. So far this one is much snappier and I've had no issues.

To be fair this is my first experience with personal cloud storage but it has everything I wanted supported with minimal configuration.

Bad NAS, can store fine, but cannot stream at all!

If you want to store pictures or files then this is the drive for you. But you cannot stream Plex at all on it. I tried using the App in WD NAS and it freezes and buffers after 4 minutes. I tried to use plex on my server and just streamed the movies from the NAS as storage only, and the same thing! When I put all the movies on my PC Hard Drive, and install Plex it runs great!! And the PC is upstairs on a USB wifi adapter. The NAS was plugged directly into my 1GB Switch, and the TV I was trying to stream from was 10 feet away from a 5GHz Wifi...so the drive just can't process fast enough. Very upset and don't even need this thing. I can store crap on my USB I don't need a $300 unit that can't even stream.

    Western Digital

The hardware itself is great but the software has web access timeout that cannot be turned off which the maximum timeout is 30 minutes. If your out of the house and not continuously logging into the software your locked out. Opened a ticket with WD but don’t think any changes will be made do to this issue has been going on for awhile and other people had opened tickets for the same issue. If I knew about this issue I would’ve looked at other brands. If it wasn’t for the software settings on the web access timeout I would’ve given it a five star rating.

Need patience to setup WD Cloud

First, to be clear Best Buy's service and delivery were great. The problem I had was with the WD Cloud device. The first night I set it up it worked great and I moved files to the My Cloud to back them up. I noticed it was doing updates and so I Iet it update overnight. The next morning the drive's power light was blinking fast blue and offline so I couldn't connect. I went through all the reset options and after two days of trying to no avail, I reached out to WD for help. That's a whole different story of bad service from WD, no help at all by their "techs." After TWO weeks of trying with WD they told me to take the drive back to Best Buy even though they initially said they would initiate a return on WD's end but when I asked about my files they said they couldn't help me! In one last effort I tried to reset by unrecommended procedures of continually disconnecting the power while the unit was booting up. After about 10 minutes of repeating that process the drive finally reset and the red light came on and finally turned solid blue. Since that point the drive has worked great and been stable. I am still slightly concerned about backing up everything on the drive so I am slowly testing and transferring files. I would recommend Best Buy but WD's service was awful so I wouldn't want a friend to struggle through this process as I did.

    When Working, Great

Why the one star with such a stark summary? The drive and software worked really well until I needed a document remotely. The drive only stayed remotely operational for seemingly minutes at a time...Really disappointing. WD could use some serious work on their tech support too. I explained that the drive was online through my router and through the local admin but still offline remotely. Unbelievably they still decided to recommend I check the network cables are attached. (In the event you’re not tech savvy reading this, it would be impossible to see the device in either location if there was an issue with the cable.) They sent me to forums to find the answers on my own (to no avail). Longest time it I got it to work properly was about 2 hours after way too many hours of tinkering. To say they were no help would be a gross understatement.

    Faster than the older model

This a replacement for my older WD cloud that I have almost 10 years old. I chose this 6 TB because I believed would be enough to store my family's personal files. That includes photos, videos and other stuff worthy for keeping. I liked this newer unit because it's way faster to access than the older one that I have which is slower but still keeping up saving automatically. Until now still working so I assumed this WD 6TB would last for at least 10 years as well like my older one. WD's cloud storage really durable so I am a repeat customer. The only thing that I never figured out yet with this newer one is how it save because I have 3 phones on same account. The older one saved everytime on the specific name I created. This new 6TB it mixes everything old and new files and I don't know now to have it sorted. I don't see any options there, only the modified date.

Overall I like it, hopefully it will be there if WD send an update for their software.

    Good NAS, but hoping better

I bought this to retire my apple time capsule, hoping its transfer speed is better than the old stuff discontinued by apple. Actually, I got the same speed as the old time capsule, which makes me to take one star off. Other than that, I found the backup of photos from Iphone is very helpful and convenient. HDD makes a little more noise than apple time capsule. I made a cushion under the bottom of it to reduce the noise. PLEX is very good. I can see my video even out of home now.

    Replacement MyCloud

Pro - Much easier to connect with and sync with my new LG 2021 laptop than the MyCloud I purchased many years ago. The network connection is consistent and uploads/downloads are fast.

Con - Hard to use with my old (4+year) laptop, so if using this to back-up an older computer you need be patient.

    "Maybe" hold off!?

So, I had an original WD MyCloud (2TB) NAS unit which had started to fail - had it +/-4 years and for the most part performed well - although I'm not sure how long they should last.

At any rate, I went to my local BB store and was directed over to this unit - which I assumed was a newer (larger) upgrade - it said WD My Cloud on the packaging - and I bought it.

Soon to find out, the WD My Cloud "HOME" and older WD my Cloud are two completely different drives.

WD My Cloud is a NAS unit (Network Attached Storage) and in short functions like a network server attached to your PC. You need to setup users and can give anyone/no one access to any part of the drive (short version)

The WD My Cloud "HOME" is (for a lack of better terminology) an supped-up external USB drive with cloud access.

Immediate problem I see is limited shared access. We use Dropbox (a lot) and love the fact you can share "folders" across different users (again simplified). With WD My Cloud Home you could share a file but not pieces of a whole directory.

Again, I'm over simplifying the differences but if you want a "personal" cloud drive that works like DropBox - THIS IS NOT the answer.

Not sure how to rate this

I am really unsure how to rate this drive. I bought it solely to use as a NAS drive for Plex. Plex is one of the pre-installed applications that comes with this drive. For whatever reason, I could not get Plex to work properly. I spent a good deal of time over a period of four days with Western Digital support. The support representatives were quite helpful, but in the end, things were still not working. On a follow-up call to WD, I was told the drive was defective. I returned the drive to Best Buy and got a new one without hassle. It has been working perfectly for Plex since. However, the drive loses Wi-Fi connectivity even though it is plugged directly into my router. I have reset the drive a half dozen times over the past couple weeks. This is disheartening, and I hope it improves as it is probably too late to return the drive a second time. I would say that Western Digital support is helpful and friendly and I had no problem dealing with them.

    not a NAS

This is a home device. For the IT Techy folks, no, this is not a NAS. NAS is something different; it is a device that is hardwired into a local network. This device, as advertised, is Cloud SAN....a local backup with Cloud sharing and laptop and phone Apps, so it is not intended to be used or operate like a NAS. If you're looking for a NAS, spend the extra $200 to $300 for a NAS device and do your own NAS coding and configuration. Don't try to go cheap and then complain that it doesn't work just like a NAS.

    Garbage.

If you're looking for a network storage device, DO NOT GET THIS.

To access the drive, you have to run a special app on your computer that maps it as a network drive. There is no other way to map the drive. You can also use a special Android/iOS app, but since you can't set up shares on the drive itself, you can't browse the disk with any app that can access Windows/SMB shares.

Unlike its slightly older cousin, the WD My Cloud, there is no web interface for this device. You can't rename the device. You can't connect by FTP or SSH. The only way to change settings on the device is by going to the MyCloud website, and God help you if that ever goes under.

It has a USB port, but 1) you can't use that to copy files *from* the device to a USB disk, and 2) the only thing you can do with it is plug in a USB disk and transfer *every file on that disk* into a backup folder on the My Cloud Home. You cannot choose specific files or folders, and you cannot browse the plugged-in drive on your computer.

And last but not least: the god-awful speeds. I have a gigabit home network, and even with that, it took 5 hours to copy 150GB to the disk and *16 hours* to copy it back *off* of the disk. And the case is basically impregnable, meaning that if you want to return the disk, you have no choice but to transfer your data back over the network. I couldn't even play media off of the disk because of how slow it was; it just kept buffering.

I return this within 2 days of purchase.

    Great for storing Photos

This is awesome... I was using an external hard drive with my laptop and having to drag it around and try not to drop it... was a PITA... now I got this tower which sits by my router. I can access it from anywhere - even when I'm out of town. Easy to load and has a great search engine. I mostly store pictures and it will find all of my flower pictures if I wanted it to. I don't worry about running out of space or dragging it around. Would recommend it!

Stay away if you want to use this for Plex

Purchased this for ability to play home movies and saved DVD via Plex on my Nvidia Sheild. WD promotes this device as being Plex capable but they havent updated the Plex software in over a year so literally you can't play a single movie if you are operating on Andriod. Support tickets are pointless and you can easily search for other users reporting the exact same issue with no help from WD. The product would be solid if there was actual support that updated thr software like they should. Like I said, stay away.

    Not Compatible with Mac

I purchased this to use as a time machine back up with my 2018 Mac mini. I was running Mac OS Big Sur 11.6 in October 2021. the installation for the desktop application hung at th 50% "extraction" point in the progress bar. I combed through the troubleshooting on the WD website, with no luck. when I contacted support I was sent links to the trouble shooting I had already performed. I ended up returning it after the painful waste of time it took to learn it's not compatible with Mac.

    Don't buy this product

I did some research before buying this product hence I was fully aware that it was an entry level NAS. Based on the specs posted at Buffalo's web page, my expectation was to get WD Red or Seagate Ironwolf hard drives at a minimum. For my disappointment, the unit shipped to me came with WD Blue HDD. I immediately called Buffalo tech support for clarification. The rep confirmed that the unit I received is what Buffalo has been shipping these days!!! Really? This is sub-entry level. Aside from being the lowest grade hard drive you can get (model number ending in "Z"), it is NOT intended for NAS use. So... I already returned it and bought another product from a more reputable manufacturer. Do not be fooled by misleading Buffalo.

    Great product, poor documentation.

I thought this would be an easy setup on my small business network. The hardware install went super smooth. My computer found the drive with the Navigation utility. However, I was unable to find the device share to create the mapping. Had to do a little google searching to find my way past the problem. Hint: make sure SMB 1.0 is enabled for file sharing in Windows 10. Documentation provided and on their website is not very detailed.

Easy to setup, but too simple minded.

Had My Cloud for many years, and decided to replace with My Cloud Home, as support for the older product was expiring. Though I was impressed with the ease of setup, I was disappointed by how little control you have over the device via the web interface. The sharing is totally different, and does not allow for an administrator to control all of the shares and backups. Would hope that WD could incorporate those features in the newer product.

    So so product

I will give 3 stars as few times it either stopped responding or didn't complete showing all files in the apps, so I had to reset it. I guess you try to save a recurring cloud storage fee, it's something that you have to deal with occasionally.

Contacted manufacturer’s tech support, they wanted me to reset. It won’t reset! Hellooooo. All my pictures saved in this thing are all gone. Real upset.

    Throw your money away

I bought this NAS device. It worked about 2 months. I have 2TB of information on it. Been on the phone with WD for more than 40 hour, not one out of 20 customer service reps could fix it. It disconnects from the IP address and won't reconnect until you reboot it, if you are fortunate. This purchase is the worst waste of my money in a lifetime. If you want to purchase anything with WD on it, give your money to charity, relieve yourself of the frustrations and by a different product.
