We love our new LaserJet printer. We had a couple of hiccups getting it to connect wirelessly to devices at first, but discovered that the problem was corrected by restarting the device (so it likely wasn’t a printer issue). I should also note that while you can print from devices without connecting them to the printer, the printer itself does not connect wirelessly to your network. It was not an issue for us, but I misinterpreted the specs and did not expect to have to connect via Ethernet.
Sep 04, 2020 16:22Nice printer. The price is price good for this kind of printer.
Nov 12, 2021 15:47Good quality. Prints pretty quickly. Networked via LAN. Can network wirelessly and also setup for direct wireless with a network.
Aug 30, 2021 03:02This was only a copier and we needed an all in one printer.
Jan 28, 2021 07:01I had an inkjet printer from another brand, and was disappointed by the print quality. If you print infrequently, the nozzles tend to dry up and you end up cleaning the printheads far too often. I decided to get a color laser printer, and I'm very pleased with my choice. Being that it's an HP, it's well-supported on all my computers. Time to first page is surprisingly fast, even when the printer has gone to sleep for days. The print quality is excellent for what I'd call "business graphics", and color photos are respectable. It's true that the per-page cost is high due to expensive cartridges, but for my use it's ideal. It prints the handful of pages I need a few times per week promptly and clearly, and I don't feel like I have to pamper it for that to happen. It also prints surprisingly fast for a color printer. It's been a good investment for me in my home office.
Jan 29, 2021 20:58I was sold a product which did not meet any of the specifications the salesperson said it would.
Aug 22, 2021 14:29Low cost, easy set up, fast two sided color.
Great !
Aug 08, 2020 20:47Perfect printer for home or office. This is my 3rd HP laser printer, switch from Dell a couple of years ago. Works great on both PC and Mac as I have both. Setup was easy enough. Haven't had any printing issues and unlike ink jet printers, it still prints even if you do not use it for awhile.

Our older (~10 years) HP LaserJet printer went out without warning. So I did a ton of research on black only LaserJet printers online and found that this particular HP printer was always at the top of the list. I decided that was enough to buy it and I’m so glad I did!
Sep 25, 2021 20:59I was delighted to learn that it is completely non wireless. It prints rapidly. The page that I told it to print is ready before I reach to my lower shelf to get it. It hold plenty of paper. I would recommend it to a friend.
Nov 01, 2020 06:01Great printer for home use. better print quality than ink jets
Nov 05, 2021 16:46Very good B&W wireless printer. Very easy setup quick!
Nov 05, 2021 18:13Perfect printer for what I use it for. I don't need color and it's is rock solid and reliable.
Oct 15, 2021 15:35We ended up returning this printer to Best Buy because it did not scan or copy and we were told that it did before we ordered it. It was a good printer if that is the only function you wanted. We had difficulty figuring out how to print envelopes and were never able to get it to do so. Our main concern was that it was not the functional machine that we were looking for.
Nov 05, 2021 16:30Ishmel was fantastic. Full of energy and information. He makes you feel welcome and is willing to take the time to help you with anything you need. Thank you Ishmel and Best buy'
Jun 19, 2021 08:03This is an awesome printer. We love it. We highly recommended

This all in one printer works perfectly, my only regret is I didn't purchase one with a feeder tray.
Mar 01, 2019 16:10Getting a refurbished item from a website is always a risk, but the Best Buy store clerk assured me that I can always return the HP laser printer to the store for a full refund (in the form of a store credit).
I received the unit via UPS in just a few days. I thought it odd that the toner cartridges were already installed. Perhaps HP must be very confident in their product to ship it that way.
It was easy to set up and I was pleased to see the ink level display showed four full cartridges. I was expecting much less since toner cartridges are not cheap.
My first project was to print 52 weekly calendar pages. The job was done in 4 minutes. I also printed several full-page color pictures. All of them were flawless magazine-quality on 20 lb paper. The toner levels didn't budge from their full marks.
I'm so glad I chose not to replace the ink in my old inkjet printer. Not only is it expensive, but it streaks and empties so quickly. It also dries out when left unused for several weeks. Lasers are much more dependable.
I'm very pleased with this purchase. I should have bought another as a Christmas gift, but I gave my friend the old inkjet.
Dec 24, 2018 13:37Even though a little hard to understand all the symbols on the control panel, it works perfectly for all of my needs.
Mar 09, 2019 16:57This Is a perfect upgrade from an inkjet printer. 3 in 1 wireless machine.
Mar 29, 2020 10:42The printer does very well now that it is installed and a few kinks are out.
Mar 01, 2019 16:31This printer works fantastic and the print quality is perfect! The only negative is that it can be finicky if you don't have super fast wifi. Otherwise, our family LOVES this compared to the multiple piece of junk Epsons that we have owned in the past! Never again! The toners may be expensive, but they last forever and will never gunk up the printer. So glad we coughed up the money to buy a quality printer....so worth it in every way!
Aug 01, 2020 15:01The setup was easy. It's a nice low cost Color laser printer
Jun 17, 2020 16:38It was delivered on time and packaged well. Easy to set up and use. I haven’t used it much yet, but so far really liking it.
Sep 13, 2019 17:38Winning in business means working smarter. This HP Color LaserJet Pro M479fdw printer is designed to let you focus your time where it's most effective - growing your business and staying ahead of the competition.Prints up to 27 ISO ppm*, up to 27 ISO ppm* in color
This is my first color laser printer that I’ve used outside of a corporate office environment, and I think it performs every bit as well as the behemoths in the workplace. This printer responds quickly to submitted print jobs and initializes/starts printing within a few seconds of hitting print on my laptop. The prints also come out fast, so you won’t be waiting a long time at the machine unless you’re printing hundreds of pages. Black and white prints and text are crisp, dark, and consistent and color prints are bright, vivid, and fairly true to color. I will say that with photographic prints, I noticed some slight banding in solid color areas, the colors were somewhat less saturated than what you see on a screen; if you look closely you can see grains of distortion in finely detailed portions of the photo, though that could be a combination of the resolution of the original image, print scaling, and the kind of paper used. In general, I thought color photos printed on plain white paper came out looking great. When scanning and photocopying, all colors, including black are somewhat lightened/faded. It’s slight, but if you scan or copy the copy, each pass will make the text and images lighter, and the edges of text and images are softened.
This printer is fairly large, bulky, and heavy, so I suggest finding a permanent place for it to live in your home or home office that gives you access to all sides of it. It needs a lot of extra space because the paper tray slides out the front and the back panel may occasionally need to be opened to clear paper jams (at least an extra foot clearance front and back). The scanner bed lid raises the height requirement an extra 10 inches as well. The printer was pretty easy to set up if you follow the quick start manual directions closely. WiFi setup took only a few minutes, and I was able to connect to it wirelessly and start printing after downloading and installing the software to my computer. The only part that was not explained well was changing the IP address of the printer to static versus automatic so that it would be consistently found on my home network. After I did this I stopped having the issue where my computer wouldn’t find the printer on the network after the printer went to sleep or was rebooted.
Controlling everything using the touch screen is straightforward with taps and swipes just like on a smart phone or tablet. I like that there are a lot of ways to send jobs to the printer. With Web Services turned on, you’re assigned a unique email address that if you send a document to, the printer will receive the document as a print job from anywhere with an internet connection. You can also use a USB stick and print files directly off of it, or scan documents and save to it as well. If you prefer not to print documents right away when sending jobs over the network, with a USB thumb drive installed in the back of the machine, it can store jobs that you can retrieve and print at the machine instead. You can also password or PIN protect those jobs so they won’t sit unattended in the document retrieval tray if the documents are sensitive and the printer is located in a public area.
There’s also the option to connect directly to the printer via USB, WiFi-direct, or Bluetooth if you don’t want it to be network connected. The mobile app was straightforward and simple to use to print documents and photos from mobile devices. You can even select files from online storage like Dropbox, Google Drive, and social media like Facebook and Instagram. The one thing that I don’t like is that the genuine toner cartridges for this printer are pricey (there are 4 of them) and can be exorbitant if you want the high capacity cartridges, but as it is, with my printing needs, the starter cartridges will last me a couple years as they’re supposed to be able to print upward of 2000 pages each. If you print a lot, you may want to invest in the 3rd paper tray (stacks onto the bottom), which is sold separately and can hold up to 550 sheets of paper. The two included trays can only hold 50 and 250 sheets respectively; both can house a variety of sizes of paper and even envelopes. I just wasn’t a fan of how extending paper tray 2 for legal paper made the drawer stick out from the machine about 2 inches. Seems like a dust catcher, though practically, I don’t think I’d ever leave legal paper in that tray making that point moot. Not sure who uses fax anymore, but that’s an available option as well with both a dedicated phone line and pass through phone jack in the back.
The printer does not put out a lot of heat, has relatively low toner odor after printing, and is fairly quiet during operation. I have it set to go to sleep after 1 minute of inactivity to save electricity. Overall, this printer has all the bells and whistles that you’d need for an office printer and can handle small to medium volume professional and home business printing. It’s easy to set up and use and gives you flexibility with internet connected apps and security with various types of job handling. The print quality for black and color are great, as are digital scans, though photocopies may end up slightly lighter than the original document.
Aug 02, 2019 15:14Upon reviewing this new HP Color laser Jet Pro MFP M479FDW, I have some experience with wireless printers. At work we have a lot, somewhere around 18 of these laser units. They mainly consist of Brothers MFC and a Few Color Canons so I compared this HP to what we are using now, just to name a few.
Brother MFC-L2700DW
Brother MFC-9330CDW
Canon MF624CW
Now it’s tough to beat Brother and Canon but I had an open mind. I’m not no expert in Wi-Fi copiers but I’ve had more than my share of frustration setting copiers on the Wi-Fi before. I did purposely did NOT look at the setup instructions. I literally opened the box, placed the Copier next to our Canon MF624CW, removed the protective films and plugged it in. Weight and footprint (size) was pretty much identical to the Canon and Brother 933. Its footprint is 16 ½” Wide 18” Deep 15 ¾ “ High at 51lbs but keep in mind there is a rear paper feeder which would increase the depth , with the top door open its 26” high. Holds 250 sheets of paper capacity and can hold 50 sheets for scanning on its top feeder. Opening up the trays and toner storage, it felt well-built and sturdy, like a business copier should. It comes with a phone cable and a USB printer cable. Trust me in this, you won’t need the USB cable unless you don’t have Wi-Fi.
The control screen is large for a printer and a breeze to navigate and tilt-able. Unlike the competitors, you don’t have to tap to go to a next page, just swipe left or right as you would do on your cell phone. It was bright, clear, easy to navigate and self-explanatory. Within MINUTES I had it connected to our Wi-Fi, a first. I then scanned for wireless networks, found the HP Printer and connected to the printer directly with a simple password. Next step I did a search for wireless network printers, found the HP printer and windows installed it. Once done I reconnected my PC to my Wi-Fi internet and all was done! It WAS that simple.
Loaded with features such as double sided printing, 1 pass double sided scanning so you can scan a double sided page in just 1 pass, impressive. It’s equipped with a walk up USB slot as well as a rear USB for Storage. It can handle up to 7 PC’s connected wirelessly. Printing was fast and clear. I then installed The HP Smart App on my cell and within minutes I was printing from my cell directly to the HP MFP M479FDW, so easy a caveman can do it. Once sent, it woke the printer and was printing within seconds. The quality of the color prints were amazing for a color laser and I was using regular stock 20 lb. paper, I wished I had photo paper to really get a feel for color.
This is the FIRST printer I ever had to deal with where I could not only connect 1 but up to 7 PC’s so easily and wirelessly. Not To leave out it has Apple Air and Google Cloud print, first page prints in 9.5 seconds and 28 PPM which these specs beats all of our in house laser printers. A check on price when comparing, this HP is a bit more expensive than the competitors BUT you get Blue Tooth print, Apple air and Google cloud which others don’t support. I just noticed it’s on sale, a bargain and a no brainer loaded with options and ease of use.
It outperformed ALL our in house laser printers in EVERY aspect. Speed, resolution and especially in ease of set up. I can stress enough how easy it was to set up! After a little reading I see HP designed this copier with small business in mind and HP got it right. No fuss, no Cat lines, just plug and connect. Everyone in our office has taken notice and has spent a little time with it. Several have connected to it and are using it. Everyone has been impressed. Time will tell how rugged it is but as of now, HP has a winner. I took my company Black and White Brother MFC-L2700DW Laser printer off, gave it to my boss and said I’ll use my new HP printer thank you!
Aug 12, 2019 11:19In terms of general all around performance, you can’t do much better. This HP Laserjet Pro does everything really well, with the exception of scanning (could be better) and photo printing (which it’s not built to do). It’s ease of use, after initial setup, is another feather in its cap. The only real downside (and it’s a function of what it is) is it’s footprint and weight. That’s not a con, but something to keep in mind depending on your space. The other downside, again, common to all color laser printers, is the cost of the toner.
IN THE BOX
After getting the printer out of the box (which is a chore given how heavy it is) you will find a power cable, USB cable and ethernet cable. Nothing special. The color toner is already installed, so in terms of physically putting things together, there’s not much to do. You just need to find a space in your office/home that’s big enough to handle it.
SETUP
For whatever reason, I struggle with getting printers to work the first time. Especially wireless ones. A lot of my struggles relates to getting the right drivers. Windows will find the printer but it just won’t work. Luckily, the touchscreen on the printer itself is helpful. It directs you to the website where you can download the printer’s software on your computer. For me, I am using this printer connected to my desktop via USB cable. So I plugged the cable into my computer and printer, and after the HP software was downloaded, my printer was registered and the proper drivers downloaded. I can’t speak to the Wi-Fi set up, meaning, set up via Wi-Fi only (although I did easily connect the printer to my Wi-Fi, made easy via the touchscreen). More on printing via Wi-Fi in a moment.
All in all, I thought the set up via USB cable was easy and straightforward so points to HP in helping this printer-setup challenged guy.
EASE OF USE
Now the first time I used it, I was printing a Word document. The printer was listed in the menu, but it wouldn’t connect and print. Luckily, after a few tries it just worked. From there, it’s been like magic. Whether I’m printing from my Android phone (NOTE: you have to download HP print services from Play Store) or from a Wi-Fi computer (again, after downloading the HP print services program) I can print anything from anywhere. I’ve printed double-sided without issues. Changing color to B/W is easy in the menus itself. The touchscreen is intuitive and easy to use. Truly, this is one of the few professional printers/scanners/fax machines that is really easy to operate. Having it do what you want is no problem.
After downloading the HP software mentioned above, I was able to find the printer on my laptop while connected to my wireless network (again, after connecting the printer to Wi-Fi network). The printer appeared as if it was plugged directly in to my computer and I never had any issues printing while on the same Wi-Fi network.
When scanning, you have the option to email the scan to someone or you can save it to your computer. I typically scan documents to myself, so saving them to the computer saves me the time of having to find the document in my inbox. When you’re done scanning the documents folder pops up and the PDF you just scanned is already there.
QUALITY
As a laserjet color printer, I expect great results. I was not disappointed. The quality of both B/W and color text is above-average in my humble opinion. The speed of printing is pretty good too. I don’t recall the actual PPM numbers, but that doesn’t matter. This will print B/W, color, and double-sided fast enough for any use. Even if it’s a large document. Printing color pictures on the other hand, wasn’t anything special. It was good, don’t get me wrong, but I wasn’t too impressed. But I didn’t get this to print pictures so that’s okay to me.
Scanning, however, I was left wanting more. Before I get into quality, I do want to say that the auto feeder for scanning works well even on folded pages (as in, they scan straight and don’t get too skewed one way or the other) and my guess, can handle about 50 pages although I haven’t tested it. In other words, it can handle most things you need to scan in one fell swoop. Quality however, was a different story. I was underwhelmed with the scan quality both on the scanning bed and the feeder. The text and pictures were left jagged and the colors muted. It’s not so bad for me to say that you shouldn’t get it, but if scan quality is a top priority I might second guess it. For me, I mostly scan to save digital copies of hard files for filing purposes and for that, the scan quality is fine.
CONS
While I’ve mentioned a few already, the cons can be described as: 1) size and footprint and weight (again, it’s not surprising, it’s just something to keep in mind); 2) scan quality (below average, if you must have great scans, look elsewhere); 3) noise (this baby is loud when it’s working and warming up, louder than other multi function use printers I’ve used in the past). I would also add having to download HP software on your phone and laptops to print wirelessly. It’s not really that big of a deal, but the printer itself doesn’t tell you that it’s necessary (neither do the instruction manuals, which could really use some help in the readability department). I didn’t know to do this until I did some Google searching. Again, it’s not a deal breaker, but having clear instructions is important to me and HP fails in regards to showing the user how to take advantage of ALL of the functions and abilities of this very capable printer. But once you figure it out and how to use the features, it works great. Lastly, the cost of toner. Toner is ALWAYS expensive regardless of the printer, but when you add in color, the cost increases exponentially. It’s probably $200 to replace these. I haven’t gone through all of the toner yet, but it will sting my wallet when that time comes. But again, it comes with the territory. I only mention that for the people who might not have known about laser toner costs.
CONCLUSION
While it’s too much printer for the average home, if you do a lot of printing and/or have a small business, this printer is a terrific option. It prints in high quality at fast speeds (except photos) and the scanning and fax functions are adequate enough for most purposes. Best of all it’s simple to use after it’s all set up (which might require some Google searching). All in all, I’m very happy with the printer.
Jul 18, 2019 12:23HP Color LaserJest Pro MFP M479fdw
Full disclosure: I received the HP Color LaserJest Pro MFP M479fdw as part of a program where I receive products in exchange for an honest and timely review.
The printer came in a good size box that was fairly heavy. Some people may require or desire help with lifting it.
The instructions recommend laying the box on its side after opening the top, so the printer can be pulled (slid) out via the conveniently provided tape in the stop.
The foam packing was broken in several places, but there was no apparent damage to the printer.
The printer display, doors and trays were all well secured for shipment. The tape was thoughtfully folded over on one end making it easy to remove.
The printer comes with a power cord, USB cable and telephone cord, but no network cable. I suppose since most people will connect the printer to their wireless network, HP didn’t think a network cable was needed in the box. I have a good collection of network patch cords of various lengths, so that wasn’t a problem for me.
I also own an M477fdw that I purchased two years ago, so I am able to do a nice side by side comparison. Visually, they are nearly identical. The only difference I could see with casual observation was that there is a little graphic on the left side of the M477 showing two concentric circles with what looks like perhaps an RFID tag touching on the corner. The M479 does not have this graphic.
After unpacking, removing the tape and plugging in the power and my network cable, I powered up the printer. It went through a brief first prep cycle of some sort and then displayed the setup menu on the screen. I selected English and USA from the first two menus. The 3rd menu displayed the correct date automatically, but the wrong time on the next screen. I correct the time and moved on.
The next screen asked me to select a printer setup environment. Self-Managed or IT-Managed. I selected Self-Managed since this will be installed in my home and I don’t have a management platform installed in my home IT environment. This then resulted in the display letting me know that LaserJet Update had been set to “On”..presumably for automatics software/firmware updates. The next screen was the last, telling me to finish the setup online and to get the latest software updates at 123.hp.com/laserjet
After this, the printer completed a calibration and turned off. I touched the display and it came back on.
The menus are similar, but clearly different on the M479. It is brighter with more color and a new ribbon at the top. The power saver seems more aggressive also, since it turns off quickly as I stop to type my setup notes.
I looked though the menus to see my network setup and to turn off “direct print”, since I don’t use it and don’t want to see yet another SSID on my WiFi list. Next I printed an email message from my iPhone. I just selected print and then chose the new printer from the choice of the two MFPs I have here. The printer awakened and printed a nice crisp color copy of the email message. Then I grabbed my iPad and printed a copy of the note I used to type this product review. It behaved the same. Printing was very fast even for double sided printing. One reason I prefer laser printers is the lack of needed wait time when doing double sided printing. Laser toner doesn’t require time to dry before flipping the page to print the other side. That’s a huge time saver for long double sided documents.
Fax setup appears good. I set up my fax number, header information, auto-answer, telephone line type (several options including traditional phone (POTS) lines and VoIP). I don’t have a phone line in my home office yet and I didn’t need to send a fax, so I did not test faxing. I found a setting for two sided fax printing, so incoming faxes can be printed on both sides of the paper.
Next I inserted a page in the Automatic Document Feeder to try scanning. I was directed to do some setup via a web page or via the HP app. I used a Windows PC for this and quickly added the printer and scanned the page. I then moved to my MacBook Pro, added the printer and scanned a number of documents from the ADF. This all worked great. Scanning was fast, high quality and the pages were well aligned. I have not yet configured “scan to email” on this printer, but I have done that on my 477 and found it works ok. I assume it will be similar on this printer. You can also set up scanning to a network folder.
A datapoint that I have from my two year experience with the 477 model of this printer is that I am still using the original toner cartridges in that printer. Unlike inkjet printers which need to go through cleaning cycles or get replaced periodically due to lack of use, the laser printer appears to just keep going and going even with relatively light usage and that was one of the reasons I purchased a laser printer two years ago.
There is a lot more functionality built into the MFP M479fdw than I’ll ever use, but there is likely something there for everyone.
I’m really happy with it so far and I would recommend this printer to other people with similar needs. It is nice looking, fast, high quality and functional. I look forward to using it for many years to come.
Jul 19, 2019 08:31The HP - LaserJet Pro M479fdw Wireless Color All-In-One Printer sets a new standard to maximize business productivity in a modern, fully equipped machine. I replaced a similar Brother printer that performed well for 5 years but the interface was getting dated. Here are the differences that jumped out at me:
1- The HP M479fdw clearly deserved it's Energy Star Award. Starting the printer is quiet & uneventful compared with the Brother & similar 5-year old printers. Press start on those & the lights in the room dim as the laser starts up. This HP draws far less energy; no visible light dimming in the room during start-up & the HP is much quieter.
2- The scan speed of the HP is amazing & it is virtually silent! Easily controlled by the onboard color touch screen or on a Mac OS or PC; touch scan & the image is available in a couple seconds, 5 times faster than the Brother.
3- Print Quality is superb; colors are vibrant & black is crisp.
4- Fast Print Speed: up to 28 pages / minute.
5- Easy to Set-up. Simply select the WiFi & enter the Password. Within 2 minutes the machine is fully functional.
6- Equally Mac OS & PC Friendly. I use Mac OS & my wife uses PC. We were impressed that this HP was equally accessible on both platforms. Printing & scanning is super intuitive on both Mac OS & PC.
7- AirPrint directly from the iPad & iPhone. Effortless.
8- 5ghz Wireless capable. The WiFi is State-of-the-Art & the machine performance reflects that with ultimate flexibility & speed. Whether you have a basic 2.4ghz WiFi or a faster 5ghz speed, this HP will operate the fastest possible, based on what you provide it.
9- Easy-to-Read Large Touchscreen makes printing & scanning a simple, one-touch process. See attached photo.
10- A Full Complement of Business Features: Scans to email; print from an email; even a login can be required to print, just one of many security features built-in.
CONCLUSION: The HP LaserJet Pro M479fdw is the very BEST all-in-one Laser Printer I have ever tested. It easily commands 5 Stars & is positioned above all others that I have tested to date. It earns my HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION.
Jul 21, 2019 08:52Overview
The HP LaserJet Pro M479fdw is a multifunction device, it can print in color, scan, fax and copy. Its big and a bit on the heavy side, 50lbs and sits 16” tall. The box advises you to tip over and pull out on its side, good advice! My printer arrived packed very securely, all the flaps and covers were taped to minimize movement during shipping. This is my first laser printer in a long time. I noticed you no longer have to pull out a strip on the toner cartridges and risk getting ink powder on the floor. Once the packaging has been removed, just plug it in and setup.
Setup:
The LCD screen is a pleasure to use, unlike my current printer, an older inkjet, this LCD screen is large (approximately 4.25” corner to corner), bright (brightness adjustable), the on-screen keyboard is precise and the screen feels sturdy, doesn’t flop around when you press the buttons. Basic setup was simple, type in your WiFi password, follow the prompts. In addition to setting up the printer on WiFi, (I didn’t use USB cable), I also enabled HP ePrint (under “web services”). This feature allows you to email print jobs to the printer from anywhere by simply emailing your unique HP ePrint email address. The printer will provide you with a unique eprint email. This feature is great especially if you have technology challenged family members you need to occasionally send stuff to, like I do. Rather then calling and walking them through how to print an attachment each time, I just email the printer.
Setup to “Scan to network”:
I have a NAS (network attached storage), I wanted to set up scanning directly to a folder the network drive. I found this to be not as straightforward as it should be. All the printer settings can be access through a web browser, simply type the printer’s IP address, for example, 192.168.1.100. In the “SCAN” – “SCAN TO NETWORK” you can set your default scan settings, such as paper size, double sided, file name prefix or suffix. But it doesn’t have the “folder path” here. To set up a folder to scan to, you have to go to “ADDRESS BOOK” – “CONTACTS” and create an entry here under UNC Folder Path. I think it would’ve been more intuitive to have put this setting under “SCAN TO NETWORK”. ON a side note, this scanner can scan both sides of the page with 1 pass.
Performance:
The copy, scan and print quality of this printer is excellent! The text on the print outs are very crisp and sharp, exactly as I expected from a laser printer. I was surprised how nicely pictures print out, although I’ll probably keep my inkjet printers for that. Air Print works flawlessly with my idevices. There are many different ways to print from the printer, you can connect directly with WiFi Direct, Bluetooth, air print, USB drive, Google drive, Dropbox and perhaps the most common, USB cable, WiFi or wired ethernet cable. There are almost too many options, if there’s such a thing. I printed a test page from https://printatestpage.com/ to compare my current inkjet to the color laser, the text is sharper and the images more saturated on the laser. For home usage, the difference isn’t a big deal. The inkjet is fine for most if not all printing tasks of a typical household plus inkjets still print photos better.
Overview:
If you need a printer for high volume, this multifunction laser printer is an excellent choice. With print speeds of 27 pages per minute and monthly cycle of up to 50,000 pages, this printer is suitable for an office environment.
Pros:
1. Excellent print quality
2. Myriad of connectivity options
3. Many options of there to “Scan to” (email, network folder, USB drive, dropbox, Google drive)
4. Nice display screen, intuitive menu’s
Cons:
1. Printer cost.
2. Would be nice if the 3 buttons (Return to prev, Home, Help) under the display screen lit up.
Jul 22, 2019 23:34I am replacing my 6 year old Epson Printer with this.
It print fast for what I need it for. I just recently went back to school and needed something I could print more with and had been looking for an upgrade.
Wow setup was really fast and easy. I am using an Android phone that I had wireless print set up for before. All I had to do was add this printer to my list of web print. Did i mention its fast at printing? My main reason for changing to laser jet was the yield from the toners. Lots more pages per print. But that is also a downfall, they are pretty expensive. I recommend only if you run a small office or have the need to print a lot. I am doing lots of printing so my need had me in the market. Print from any device i own is fast and accurate. have not tested pictures. But pages that had color and small images printed quick and no runs.
Just as a test I printed out doc with pictures about 14 pages in total. Fast and clear took only seconds. You would have thought it was printing black and white only. The color is super fast also
Highly recommend anyone looking for more printing capacity need to give this a look.
Jul 21, 2019 13:17While I can do with a smaller and cheaper printer, this one worked out perfect for my home needed. No complains
Nov 20, 2020 15:35Print crisp text and clear images in your busy office with this HP LaserJet Pro printer. Made for high-volume use, this printer comes with a preinstalled HP Original toner cartridge so you can get started right away. With a 65 ppm yield, this HP LaserJet Pro printer keeps up with the demands of your business.
I decided to pay the extra ten bucks to get the HP laser, and I have been so happy I have. It is the cadillac of printer brands and is fast, quiet, so easy to set up a baby could do it (or an older person!) I think it will last beyond my years behind a computer.
Dec 07, 2018 16:07Great feature set and 550 page tray for an SMB or School.based on monthly volume. Our clients love this unit.
Jun 02, 2018 09:11I have been extremely pleased with this printer for well over a year and a half now. I do a large volume of customer invoicing daily and this printer does the job in record time.
Aug 29, 2018 19:43I have had prior versions of the same printer in the office several times. And this time we also purchased several. All of them work as they should.
Jun 23, 2017 18:12Using this printer in a business setting and it is performing flawlessly.
Oct 17, 2017 16:21seems to be working fine. Haven't had any complaints yet about it.
Jun 01, 2019 12:21Very pleased with printer and it working as expected.
Mar 01, 2019 15:45Printer was bought and used. It works well. Ink may cost some but with it.
Aug 04, 2017 17:20HP OfficeJet 250 Mobile All-In-One Printer. Take a printer with you wherever you go using this HP OfficeJet mobile multifunction printer. The long battery life lets it print out a variety of media anywhere, so it's ideal for mobile offices and invoicing in particular. Speeds of up to 20 ppm make printing with this HP OfficeJet mobile multifunction printer a seamless experience.
Love that I can take anywhere an easy to set up on the run
Jan 05, 2021 11:30I'm a trucker and I use this printer/scanner on the road. First the good: It is a well made printer and so far it has handled the shaking and bouncing of being in a Big Rig, prints quickly and quietly. Easy to connect to my mobile hot spot and finds my laptop and cell phone with no issues. The not so good: Battery life is just ok and the power cord that's included is a bit on the short side. Print quality is also just ok. The printer is pricey an missing(in my opinion) a slide out paper guide on the output side(at bottom of printer). The scanning if good but the paper feeder can be finicky. So far the printer has performed well trouble free. I will update this post if the printer fails the Big Rig bounce test long term.
Nov 22, 2019 16:41This printer is a good option for those looking to downsize from a larger printer and have the ability to relocate it as needed. Love the wireless capability and the print quality is great! Double-sided printing is not a problem. I wish it could catch printed documents and I haven’t tried scanning photographs through the feed. I also like the fact it can run on its battery. Software is a little quirky at times, resulting in configuration tweaks here and there, but works as well as it needs to. Definitely recommend this mobile printer.
Oct 21, 2021 16:55Definitely a 5 star on this printer, it is light weight, compact and you can take it anywhere; prints fast and gets the job done; one of the best things that I love about this printer is that I don't have to keep it plugged in, which is convenient when you are on the go; I can print in the car, on the train, and even on the plan; moreover, when I say print, I don't mean wifi, this printer has a direct connect which gives you the ability to directly connect and print; this would be great for those in college
Sep 15, 2021 09:20It is a workhorse printer as it can print multiple pages at one time. It is convenient for transporting to and from meetings. It produces a quality printed page. Well worth the full price or discounted amount. It is not of a flimsy construction but a good strong construction. Its multiple usage such as printing and copying makes it an extremely necessary piece of equipment for any business big or small.
Jun 29, 2019 01:40Purchased this printer to use for traveling. I originally bought the Officejet 200 and quickly returned it to get this one with the built-in scanner. My only complaint is that if you want to use it via wireless in a hotel you will need to have your own router or set your phone as a hotspot. Other than that it is a great printer.
Jul 19, 2018 16:38I travel for work. I was so
happy to get and use this printer. Downloaded the hp smart app to my phone and print my documents right off my iPhone. I purchased the case and packed it in my suitcase and it flies with me on the plane. I love it!
Jul 10, 2020 20:41Love this printer. Works amazing for what i do. Traveling over the country.
Sep 11, 2021 20:32Enjoy crisp, clear printouts with this HP OfficeJet 200 mobile printer. Its compact footprint lets it fit neatly into your backpack or briefcase for on-the-go printing, and its long-lasting battery keeps charging interruptions to a minimum. This HP OfficeJet 200 mobile printer produces up to 10 pages per minute to keep productivity high.
Purcahsed this handy unit for work on the go situations. primary usage is to print on thin NCR type paper.
The printer goes without a hitch, out of 30 sheets there was only 1 error which is a misfeed of the thin paper.
Tips:
- do not over load the paper tray, load 30sheets max it can take i up to 40 maybe 50 but any more and you risk a paper jam on the first 5-10 sheets
- it prints faster when using the USB chrod, wiFi direct connect print speed will depend on your laptops ability to send info.
- setup is easy but a little cumbersome at times, i think it's has more to do with Windows 10 interfacing with the printer. It does not always pick it up right away. you have to go into settings to make sure the laptop sees the printer. (wireless situations only)
-Black ink is good for about 600-700 sheets of paper.
Nov 19, 2018 10:50We use these to print directly from tablets out in the field. Wifi direct has made it really easy to do so while simultaneously being able to still use mobile data on the tablets which was an issue on the old HP 100s, where you had to switch wifi on and off to print and browse internet respectively.
Another upgrade from the HP 100 is the battery is no longer external or protruding from the device and they have figured out how to fit it in the body of the printer.
Only thing that could make this better currently is if they figure out how to make it smaller.
Great deal when you buy them on sale if you have a need for mobile printing
Apr 12, 2018 09:02This printer is just what I needed, something small enough to fit in my back pack so I take with me when I’m traveling, but also prints quickly and very nicely
Mar 14, 2020 00:13work fine a slight challenge setting it up but I got ti done
Oct 23, 2021 09:11I love it. It’s exactly what I needed when I’m on the go and have to wait fir an extended time. Now I can do something constructive. Best purchase in a long time.
Jun 04, 2021 17:40Great printer. I absolutely love the size. Wish the part where the printed pages come out had more of a tray—they get spit out. Maybe I’m doing something wrong
Jul 03, 2021 10:30I use this in my office/vehicle. It has always worked in extreme hot or cold weather. I only need it for black ink. When using color, I would go through cartridges every 2 weeks, so now my invoices are pre-printed & the black in cartridge lasts about 2 - 3 months. The battery lasted a year, so til new battery arrived I used power cable to cigarette lighter adapter, worked perfect for the 3 days I needed to use electricity! Happy printer owner here.
Feb 22, 2018 11:57Works awesome dpi quality is pretty good for something so tiny and being mobile, and being a copier tech haven’t had the pleasure of fixing it yet cuz it’s going hard still!
Apr 11, 2021 23:00Get fast printing that fits your space and your budget. Produce professional-quality results, and print and scan from your smartphone.Prints up to 19 ISO ppm* in black
I would give this 20 stars if I could.
This is by far the EASIEST printer I have had in the last 5 years to install. 1. Removed it from the box, plugged it in, downloaded driver ( I don't have a CD tray on my laptop) put the paper in, print.
It's on my desk and when not using it takes up 7 1/4 " w by 13" long. The best part, it is a Laser printer. This was the most important decision because Insta Ink seems to be a big rip-off.
Aug 14, 2021 09:06I'm very pleased with the printer. It's compact and fits nicely onto a small cubby shelf on my desk. Very quiet operation, excellent print quality. Set up was easy but I'm NOT using Wifi and the only little annoyance is that the blue Wifi light blinks as in "searching" even though I did NOT set it up for Wifi. My neighbor's Wifi showed up as an option during set-up but was obviously ignored so I'm not sure why it searches for the connection (maybe it's just built-in to do that). But all in all this was an excellent buy and I recommend it to anyone looking for a compact and quiet monochrome laser printer.
Dec 13, 2020 18:11Product tiny but vibrant, easy to store, good for small enterprenuers!!
Mar 29, 2019 18:50The HP LaserJet Pro M15w laser printer so far has represented not only a great value due to its availability at under $100 price, but also the cartridge drum refill kits are available for 2 for $25!! . The printer was a snap to setup on Win10, my iPhone and Chromebook w/o Google cloud, which is being discontinued.-It also has good performance with a pretty fast first page printing speed. I also like its ease of use, small footprint, and quiet operation. No complaints so far, only similes.
May 14, 2021 15:43My son's brother printer died while at college. It was an old hand me down but a great small printer. During COVID, printers were in demand and no affordable printer was available but this one. It's just ok, the print cartridges are more money than the brother cartridge. He likes the printer and says it works fine but he did not load the app onto his phone. He does not print wirelessly either, probably just too lazy to figure it out. He plugs the printer cable into his lap top to print and it works for him. He did say the printer does not hold a lot of paper at one time, about an inch of unprinted paper. You pull down the front panel to load the paper. A pull out tab guides the paper in place. There is no true paper tray. To save space you can put the front panel back upright but then you can not print. The printed pages print out of the top and you extend a pull out tab to catch those printed pages. One time the printed page fell off the top of the printer and landed back into the area of feeder paper. The design of the printer is not the best but when not in use you can take the paper off and fold up the tray to make it smaller. Its fine for small use at college.
Dec 03, 2020 07:03Great size, minimal look, acceptable print quality for my needs (shipping labels, monochrome documents).
AirPrint works great once i got the printer to connect to the WiFi.
Connecting was frustrating. Note- scan the barcode on the single page setup leaflet, NOT the manual. Doing it incorrectly will download the wrong app, a useless troubleshooting app requiring creating account etc.
Well worth the money. But hey HP. We’re not in the 90’s. Ditch the CD and provide clear directions for WiFi. Maybe use words instead of just pictures. This isn’t an IKEA bookshelf. Thanks.
Mar 05, 2021 13:35I had to buy a printer since I am now working at home - the inkjet I had just could not handle what I needed to do. I use the WIFI function and it works great. It is so compact I was able to put it on a book case shelf. Definitely compare it to others and in the end if you can't decide get this one - you will not be sorry.
Apr 10, 2020 17:49Small foot print; wife has it on her studio and it sits on small coffee table. Initial toner doesnt last much but it helps while you get used to it.
If using fully wired configuration; its a breeze. Yet wifi connection and HP + Windows 10 bugs still need to be cleaned up it took a little troubleshooting to make it work.
Jun 20, 2020 06:24Winning in business means working smarter. The HP Color LaserJet Pro M454dw printer is designed to let you focus your time where it's most effective, helping you grow your business and staying ahead of the competition.
I am so excited to share that my HP - Laser Jet Pro M454dw Wireless Color Laser Printer is one of the BEST printers that I have purchased. It very easy to install, the quality of the prints are of course amazing and it was delivered quickly! The ONLY hang up I have is that the size of it was bigger than I expected, so I had to make room on my desk for it. So if you have room for it, be sure to look at the size, great purchase for the price and quality!
Oct 05, 2020 12:18Great print quality, easy to setup and use. Doesn't require much space. Multiple connections options.
Oct 15, 2021 16:15I use this for home use and for my children for school. So, I need quality prints, quickly, and I want it to do so without a lot of mechanical noise. This printer does all of that. I also will print on both side of the paper ( I haven't tried this yet). Cost per cartridge is very shocking! Looking at cost per printed sheet 0.023 / sheet for this printer VS my older HP (CP2025DN) which is 0.038 / sheet using black toner. I'm very happy with this printer. Note plugging in a wired network cable will turn off the WiFi. Since I will not use WiFi this was a plus for me.
Jan 01, 2021 19:58I bought this for my office and I love it. Perfect size and quality.
Oct 18, 2021 19:26Great product. Quality and quickness are outstanding. Liked it so much purchased one for my home office. Wireless connection is great and always reliable.
Dec 20, 2020 12:36Uses ink well. Added a second tray and have no issues. Use these in 22 of my offices and they all work perfect.
Aug 02, 2019 15:29Excellent Printer, quality is the best, and it connects very easy to the wifi
Aug 17, 2021 20:36Excellent printer. Been using it for over a month now in my home office and it is as advertised. Don’t second guess this purchase!
May 21, 2021 15:27The HP OfficeJet Pro 9015e delivers faster color printing, auto 2-sided scanning, and enhanced security features. It includes the optional HP+ Smart Printing System that keeps itself up to date, secure, and ready to print from virtually anywhere at any time. Optional HP+ system requires an HP account, internet connection, and use of only Original HP Ink for the life of the printer.
This machine definitely has the performance part down pretty good. All the main features work great. I am including some pictures I printed from my phone, slightly edited with the HP Smart app. Some pictures that I scanned and printed with all the default settings, the originals on the left, and the reprints on the right. A comparison picture of a photo printed on photo paper vs plain paper. As well as a print out of some of the Alexa skills that can be used with the printer.
The convenience is missing during the initial setup, but restored afterwards. The printer is pretty easy to use, once everything is set up. Which makes it difficult to understand why setting this printer up is such a hassle.
The entire setup process is kinda tedious and forced. If this printer came with free ink for 5 years, then I could understand the extra hoops for setup and use. With that said, I am a little offended by the lack of freedom surrounding some aspects of this machine. Which is a complete shame, because the printer really is quite nice. It prints extremely fast text documents, and full color glossy photos. You can fax to and from the machine, with a landline, and send faxes directly from your smartphone. It is even pretty easy to add to Alexa or Google assistant. It took less time to set it up with Alexa than it did with HP+ . Linking your printer with Alexa adds the ability to print lists, and some documents on your phone or stored with Alexa. You can even activate some tasks like scan and copy with voice control. With the addition of some more skills, you can print coloring pages, comics, games, puzzles, and recipes, through Alexa's voice control features.
As soon as you turn on the printer, it asks you a few simple questions, then it prompts you to download the HP Smart app on either your pc or smartphone, to finish the setup. It appears that registering your account with the printer is the only way to move forward from here. If you already have an HP account or don't mind signing up for the HP+ service then it shouldn't be a big deal to finish the setup. Afterall you get an extra year's worth of the manufacturer warranty, and 6 months of free ink( to support 100 pages per month of printing). If you prefer not to register right now, you can bypass this screen by pressing the "?" on the bottom of the touchscreen, then pressing "cancel" on the next 2 screens, and then follow the next few prompts to get to the main menu. Here you can set up your wifi and change any setting you want. The register prompt will pop up again soon restricting some functions, so you will probably want to just register to make things easier for yourself.
One of the good things about the HP Smart app is that it is close to the same layout and function on the computer as it is on the smartphones. Everything is split up by tiles, and has access to account and individual printer settings. Here you can check your page usage for the month, change plans, and review subscription information. All the printer functions like scanning, printing, and faxing can be activated by the tiles. You can even create and activate shortcuts directly from the app tile. Creating shortcuts is actually very easy and can be done in seconds. I'm usually emailing whatever I have to scan, so I made 2 shortcuts for scanning items as searchable PDFs, and emailing pictures.
Another drawback to this printer is the price of ink - if you choose not to join HP+ , you could be spending around $100 for all 4 cartridges.Just as an FYI 3rd party ink will void the HP+ benefits, and most likely disable your machine( if the software can detect the non-HP ink cartridges). So if you enjoy or think you will like HP's instant ink program, then this is definitely the printer for you. The HP+ program claims to be able to save up to 50% off on ink.
I have been printing for a few days, and I am almost out of yellow ink, and the other color cartridges are half empty. To be fair, I have printed 12 ( 8.5x11 photos ) , 10 ( 4x6 photos), and about 50 text document pages, so I am already near my max pages printed for the month.
If you print more than 100 pages per month, you might want to buy the next plan up, otherwise you spend $1.00 for every 10 pages over the 100 for the month.
The Best feature of this printer is the speed. It can print just about any full size photo(8.5"x11") at high quality in 1minute and 30seconds, give or take a few more seconds based on the photo. For normal quality settings, it only takes 23 seconds to print an 8.5"x11" photo. It will also print 4"x6" photos in 30 seconds, at high quality.
Even scanning is fast for this machine, it can scan at 300dpi, a 8.5"x11" photo in 10 seconds. It even offers double sided printing and scanning. With scan resolutions of 75, 150, and 300dpi.
Part of the reason this printer is so quick is because of the 1.2Ghz Processor ,and the 512MBs of memory.
This machine can print black only, or color pages in draft quality at 32PPM. On normal to high quality, it will print black at 22PPM, and color at 18PPM. In contrast most other printers print black at 13 to 15PPM, and color at 11 to 13PPM.
The HP 9015e prints HD quality prints, with 1200x1200 rendered dpi -black and 4800x1200 optimized dpi -color(using HP Advanced Photo Paper). The printer can use any media sizes from 3" x 5" up to 13" x 18", at 16lbs to 110lbs. This leaves it open to a lot of different potential projects.
Print from anywhere works pretty good, as long as your printer is registered and linked to your account and app. There is a printer setting in the app for "print anywhere" that you will have to enable to use the service first, and it's that easy. Just use the HP Smart app like you would normally and select what and how to print it.
Scanning from the PC gets you three automated features, Auto-enhancements , Auto-heal, and Auto-orientation.Advanced Scan is coming to the mobile version soon, which will let you scan multiple objects in one picture shot. Each item will be saved as it's own page, and can be saved as searchable text files. The Advanced Scan also lets you scan books, and will automatically correct curved pages to separate and straighten them out. Auto Heal will remove distracting marks and any other imperfections in your photos.max scan size is 8.5" x 14" with ADF
and 8.5" x 11.7" flatbed
Faxing is pretty simple, just like with most machines, you enter the phone number and hit send. If you don't have a physical fax cover page, you can create one from the touch screen. You can fax from the flatbed scanner, your phone, or the ADF.The ADF will hold up to 35 pages for faxing or scanning, just keep in mind that if any of your papers are warped or crinkled in any way it might cause pages to stick together when running through the ADF. I always double check my page count, to the printed fax summary reports, to make sure everything went through ok. The 9015e has an impressive 100 speed dial slots, and can store up to 100 pages to fax, just keep in mind it takes about 4 seconds per page to fax something. The fax resolution can be adjusted up to 300 x 300.You can send unlimited faxes from your phone for the trial period, after the trial period the faxes will be limited for free subscriptions.
You are also eligible for free incoming faxes for 12 months. To save paper on incoming faxes you can enable the 2-sided fax printing.
Overall the print quality and speed of this printer is really exceptional for an office printer, and very good even compared to a photo printer. The HP Smart software is pretty easy to use, to resize, crop or edit files or pictures. ( just make sure you are using the right print settings before printing for either a document or photo ). The addition of faxing from your phone, creating searchable pdfs, and tailored shortcuts really add back to the convenience of this printer. I am still pretty impressed with how accurate the color matching is on prints compared to original scanned images.
Apr 19, 2021 03:46Printer’s are a necessary evil for home life and can be difficult to work with. This HP 9015 Printer really breaks that mold by being so easy to use that it doesn’t feel like a nuisance to use!
PROS:
- The Printer is very well designed! I like the white/gray design and although it has a lot of features, it still feels compact and just blends in with your home or office by not being an eyesore.
- Setting up was very easy! After turning on and putting the ink in, I used the HP Smart App from my iPad. This App made it very smooth and easy to use. Very happy with the setup!
- After setting up, this printer is easily accessible through WiFi from any Windows 10 computer as well as my phone/iPad with the HP Smart App. So printing/scanning was very easy after that!
- To be clear: you do not NEED the HP Smart App to print from a mobile device. I was able to print over WiFi with my iPad Pro without using the App. So you can print without the app but using other features via a mobile device you need the HP Smart App.
- Can confirm this printer prints double sided!! Nice feature!
- Overall it has a lot of nice features needed for a home/office printer. Print’s fast with no errors, scanner, and copier. It will be very useful.
CONS:
- I like how everything is wireless but if for some reason you wanted a hard connection (which you can do), you would have to buy the cord separately . The Printer only comes with Power Cord and Ink.
- I can’t think of many. For the price it takes care of everything I need.
BOTTOM LINE: For my uses, this printer hits everything on the head. It’s ease of use is truly great and makes printing/scanning a seamless process.
Feb 24, 2019 16:18HP+ gives you 6 months of free ink and 1 extra year of warranty, when you register for HP+.
This printer is good for the small business. The 9015e scans your documents faster and does duplex scanning and printing. The black and white documents print at about 22 pages per minute. The color is a bit slower at 18 pages per minute. The 9015e comes with a document feeder. The 9015e is either wireless or USB. The setup is easily completed using the HP Smart App. Open the app with the computer and printer on the same Wi-Fi and follow the on-screen directions. The intelligent self-healing dual band Wi-Fi automatically detects and fixes it's Wi-Fi problems without user input.
HP+ Smart print system keeps your printer ready to print, better security than previous models. With HP+ your get 6 months of ink free. You must register for this service and provide a credit card number for payment on a monthly basis and HP will ship ink depending on which plan you selected during set-up. HP also sends you a return mailer so you can return your used cartridges. Recycled and kept out of the landfills. HP+ does require the user to only utilize HP branded ink cartridges. You can cancel this plan and return to buying your cartridges. However, please note the HP+ ink cartridge’s hold more ink than extra capacity cartridges. There is also one caveat, once you cancel the automatic ink you can no longer use the HP+ cartridges.
There are on-line resources available to assist you with addition tasks and set up on other devices.
The quality of the copies and scans is excellent. Printouts in both color and black and white crisp and no bleeding of the ink. The Color touch screen tilts for ease of use. The controls are easily identified on the color screen.
The Pros of this machine are many. However, I did have a problem with set-up and had to call Support. The phone was answered quickly, and the problem resolved in a few minutes.
The 9015e is put together well and you can tell the quality of the workmanship.
I would recommend the HP Office Jet Pro 9015e with HP+ to family and friends.
Apr 10, 2021 17:06I am coming from a Brother printer that is pushing 10 years old at this point. It held up well over time but I was due for a more modern upgrade.
Initial setup of this HP Officejet Pro was quick and easy. The mobile application and Windows HP Smart software was easy to use, and I had my printer connected to my wireless network and Google Drive in minutes. Prints are crisp, clear, and fast. I also noticed that this unit works fairly quietly, which is nice. Scanning features are great, and easy to perform with the mobile app, save as a pdf, and email without having to use a computer. The computer software is also full-featured, but it is convenient to control everything from a phone in front of the printer as well. Options and settings can be changed on the fly without walking back and forth to your computer. The touchscreen interface on the printer is quick and easy, reminds me of an older Android phone, it works well. Overall I am happy with this printer and would recommend it to anyone running a small business, or just needs a step up in quality and features for overall home use.
Mar 07, 2019 17:06Opening the box, I find the printer, 4 ink cartridges (black, cyan, yellow, and magenta…as usual), a power cord and install instruction as well as an HP+ brochure. It all looks complete and ready to install except for taking the tape off. But wait, what’s this grey button and black piece with a spring on it. Oh man, I hope it’s not broken. I examine the printer and flip it upside down, then I see the hole in the outfeed tray. I pull it out and press the other button. The tray comes out and I can see its twin on the underside. I take a few minutes to orientate the two pieces and after a second try, I get it to click in. The button has a big and small tab and goes in one way, at least that’s how it looked to me. Anyway, now ready to install.
I plug the unit in and the printer powers up. It goes through a few steps and asks to connect with my network via Wi-Fi. That’s when I discover I’ve been running my main desktop just on a LAN cable. I run the Windows troubleshooter and it can’t help. It says to try a driver, so off to the HP site to find the Wi-Fi driver for my model. I download it and tada, Wi-Fi appears in my network. I connect and it sees the printer in the HP Smart app. I don’t need my phone to install the printer. I click on the discovered printer and it starts setup. As it does, I go to the HP+ webpage, and based on my needs, I don’t want the service. To be completely honest, I was on the fence as I read about the service and I think I would have signed up if doing so didn’t lock the printer into using only genuine ink. I like the savings it offered, and the 3x roll-over credit is allowed, but as these printers age, I like the option to buy 3rd party ink just as a cheap printing option. Many times, I print articles or store coupons and I hate to use good expensive ink for those types of jobs. If HP would have left that option available, I would have signed up. So, after saying no to HP+, the printer asks to print an alignment sheet. I click yes and it takes a bit and seems to stall, but it finally gets the job done and then asks to scan the sheet. The instruction in the 2.7” touchscreen display wasn’t the easiest to read. I wasn’t sure which direction to turn the page, although it was easy to see the top left corner was the alignment spot. I chose a direction and figured it would let me know if I needed to flip it and rescan. No problem though, it said finished and ready to print. I must say that this is probably the easiest printer I’ve installed in Windows and I have 3 HP printers running through the HP Smart app, as well as 3 other branded printers currently running.
What else can I say about a printer? Well, the construction is your basic printer build. Lots of plastic and in my case a small part lying in the box waiting for me to reinstall it. The touchscreen CGD is nice and responsive. The paper feed tray is okay, but the spring-loaded (catch??) is a bit of a pain. I need to remember to hold it down when I return it. Without a spring-like many of my other printers, I just push it back in. I do like that the unit leans toward connecting with Wi-Fi, but still offers a LAN port and USB port. The printer doesn’t come with either cable, so be ready with the correct cable if this is your preferred choice. It has a convenient USB port on the side, not sure why USB 2.0 still, but maybe that’s all one needs to print with. I just figured anything new would offer USB 3.0 first. This model does have automatic two-sided printing and a 35-page auto-feeder. Oh, and I forgot because I don’t use it, but it can fax and has the two phone ports in the back. I haven’t had it but a couple of days, but it says it has auto healing Wi-Fi, so it tries to reconnect if the connection is lost.
One last thing I forgot to add during setup. At the very end, it allowed me to email myself a link to use on my other computers, tablets, and phone. I sent it to my daily email account and then whatever device I’m using, I can just click and install that device and print wirelessly. Nice.
Oops, one more thing. Not sure why and if it matters, but in the install and HP Smart app, the printer is listed as HP OfficeJet Pro 9010 series. Since it's a 9015e, that 9010 messed me up for a second. Just FYI.
Apr 06, 2021 22:07I bought this all in one printer when it became difficult to buy ink for my last printer. Installation is easy, paper jams are easy to clear, prints clearly and quickly, scans better than my last printer.
Mar 18, 2020 13:36For people who work from home or have small businesses, having a reliable printer is still really important! And with the way that we are starting to work, we need one that thinks ahead and is very easy to use at a moments notice. The HP OfficeJet Pro 9015e Printer has truly met my needs and beyond!
PROS:
- I really like the look of this printer. The shape, the white/gray tones, and the overall design just give it a modern feel while not feeling too clunky or out of place.
- Setup was truly a breeze! The printer is largely ready to go besides plugging it in, connecting it to the internet, and putting in the ink cartridges. It just was really nice to have no assembly required and it being ready to go so quickly.
- The HP Smart app (which is on Windows, Android, iPhone/iPad) is really a fantastic tool for this printer. It helps you manage everything on there, shows ink levels, and is just a well developed app to use.
- I can’t stress how nice the wireless aspect is of this printer. Being able to easily access the printer from my phone, tablet, or laptop really makes getting this done so much easier then having to be physically connected to the printer or wirelessly adding the printer through an over complicated process.
- Once set up, the printer works great! For printing it is very fast and accurate, while also being able to print double sided.
- It can scan/copy things through the document feeder or through the actually scanner which is really nice versatility to have, especially if you need to scan a lot of documents at once.
- The Color touchscreen is also really nice to have! It adds a nice feature if needed, shows the printing status, but blends in nicely when you don’t need it.
- HP+ is included in with this and I am quite impressed with it! Basically its a service that will ship you more ink when you need it without having to think about it, plus they offer ways to recycle your old cartridges which I think is a great sustainable idea. It’s a really nice feature to have to help you be more productive with your printer.
CONS:
- I don’t have any issues with this printer that I can think of or that I have run into so far. For my needs it works great.
BOTTOM LINE:
- If you work from home or have a small business and need a printer that can do it all for you, look no further than this one! The printing, scanning, copying features all work really well plus its highly accessible with its wireless hookups and HP+ membership along with it. I have really enjoyed using this printer and I think you will too.
Apr 06, 2021 14:26Was very unsure of which printer to go with, but HP was recommended by a fellow teacher and it has been wonderful. It is a perfect size and handles everything I need to do. Will always purchase HP printers in the future.
Apr 24, 2020 16:08The HP OfficeJet Pro 8035e delivers increased productivity with fast speeds and custom mobile shortcuts. It includes the optional HP+ Smart Printing System that keeps itself up to date, secure, and ready to print from virtually anywhere at any time. Optional HP+ system requires an HP account, internet connection, and use of only Original HP Ink for the life of the printer.
This printer IS an all in one. I can print from anywhere, scan to my computer, and copy.
So what's different than any other all in one you ask. 1) touch screen navigation 2) true color representation 3) does it pretty fast.
I'm in school, online and have to print off a ton of reading material (yea I'm ole school - see it, touch it, feel it), it's great that I don't have to wait forever until its finished. Loading paper is very easy, the arm on the paper tray can be retracted when not needed.
I haven't tried pictures or card stock yet, but I'm fairly sure that this Pro will come through .
May 27, 2019 19:13Love this printer! I’m a Travel Agent and ship gifts to my client all the time. With this printer I’m able to make labels for my gifts bags, print shipping labels and travel documents all in one. Plus it connects to all my devices (iPhone and MacBook). My purchase came with 12 months free ink! I haven’t even ran out of ink yet and HP has sent me replacements.
Aug 20, 2021 19:32Great SOHO all in one printer. Its fast and does everything you want, prints, copies, scans, faxes documents in black or color.
It was extremely easy to setup, just turn on, open the inner door, and then install each one of the included inks (3 for color and one black), afterwards it will ask you to print an alignment page which you then have it scan so it can tune up the printer heads. Afterwards, you can finish the setup either on a PC by downloading the HP smart app from the windows app store or you can do it also on your phone downloading the same app from your phone’s app store. I chose to do it with my PC, it will detect the printer and then ask you to enter your Wi-Fi credentials, so the printer connects to your network. Then you can create a HP account (or if you already have one login) and then it will automatically give you an extra year of warranty and 12 months of free ink replacement!! (it does it in the form of 6 months free and then gives you $30 credit, which is worth another 6 months), you do have to enter a credit card info (does not charge you, however it’s needed for when the 12 month free period ends, then it will auto ship you ink, and you can choose your plan, and the great thing is it does it based on printed pages.
The printer is amazingly fast, and I love the dual sided print feature, that makes me save so much on paper! Blacks are inky black, and colors are vibrant and defined (paper quality also matters here, so get a quality ink printer paper).
I love that the scanner/copy feature has two ways to do it, either with the traditional scanner flat bed, or it also has an auto feeder tray, so you do not have to do one paper at the time, it automatically feeds the scanner/copier. It also has fax port; however, I have not tried it yet, I have not had the need to fax something, but I am sure it is like any other fax machine.
Just an FYI, on my initial setup, the printer downloaded a firmware update and upon restart the HP smart app on my PC would not recognize the printer anymore, and then the printer on screen display would keep saying I had to finish setup, which I had done already, it would not let me print anything due this. I battled it out a hole night, doing a factory reset, re setting up the printer and nothing. I gave up. However, then next morning I decided to try it out again (I had unplugged it for the night) and I plugged it back again and everything was back to normal. So, I think unplugging it and plugging it back again made ok after the update, so If you have this same issue, remember to restart it like that after you see a firmware update (make sure it finishes it completely, do not interrupt it!).
May 06, 2021 23:32Love the printer!!! It was very easy to set up, and connect to our laptops. I love the wireless connection and the features that this printer has. It’s perfect for what our needs are. The quality of print is excellent!
Oct 16, 2021 08:24It’s just like a office printer it’s does a whole lot
Oct 10, 2021 17:44HP Office-jet Pro 8035 All-in One Printer is a smart and easy printer to use. I have had many printers over the years and this printer is without a doubt the easiest one I’ve ever set up.
Out of the box all I had to was follow a link in the instructions on my IPhone or computer and download the HP printer app. Once downloaded the App walks you through the setup process. The printer can be setup through a standard printer cable directly to your computer, Network cable or wirelessly for multiple users to use.
This is a full service printer with printing, scanning, copying and is even Alexa enabled. It has a clear fairly large LED touch screen to work the scanner, copy functions, view ink levels and other setup tools. As a bonus it includes free 8 months of Insta Ink which is great.
The print quality is excellent and very quick and is the best HP home office printer I have ever had.
May 22, 2019 14:27i love this printer , i love the fact that it has fax .. and i like that you can print from your phone with the hp app
Jul 02, 2021 15:38Other equipment broke, so bought this one and very satisfied with it.
Mar 13, 2020 17:48Go wider with this HP OfficeJet Pro wide format all-in-one printer. Outstanding print clarity and the capability of going full bleed delivers professional-looking documentation and marketing material straight from this office printer. Legendary flexibility ensures this HP OfficeJet Pro wide format all-in-one printer keeps your office running at full speed.
I purchased the HP Officejet
Pro 7740 and received it 2 days ago. I love it since it is a great improvement from the officejet 4650 I was using. It is humongous compared to my old one but still not that heavy. The setup was so easy that I completed in less than a minute including the wireless connection. So far I find it very fast, reliable and I expect the ink cartridges to last more since they are all XL type. The quality of the printouts are even much better than a laser printer. I read so many reviews before buying it and found the negative ones not true. This is a very powerful printer that cover printouts from an envelope size to 11x17 paper. Really I recommend it to quality seekers.
Feb 10, 2019 08:40Bought this in late July for home based business. Does everything I have needed up to this point. Relatively easy to set up, works well with my WiFi so I can actually print something from my cell phone which is very convenient. Scanning functions are many so I'm still learning to use them, ADF works perfectly, no jams or misfeeds. Yes, its a copier, too. All three sizes operate as designed. No jams or misfeeds there either. Print product is readable and sharp. Haven't really tried to print photos so the jury is still out on that aspect, but don't expect any less than the best from this unit. Many possible uses that still require time to give a true evaluation of the product but so far its a win-win, so, I give it 4 out of 5 stars. Worth the price.
Aug 22, 2021 09:12This replaces an 11 year old HP all-in-one and for the most part it is a much better printer. Upgraded from 8x10 to 11x17 size max scan size. Because of the larger scan size and 2 trays this is a beast bigger and heavier than older machine.
PROS
1. 2 paper trays & auto select picks letter or legal correctly when size is specified
2. Scans duplex without re-feeding paper through the machine- 1 pass gets both sides.
3. Duplex scans legal size documents (old printer couldn't)
4. Scan and print quality very good
5. Prints faster than old machine w/text only very fast.
6. Setup was fast and easy all computers in household recognized and set up drivers very fast.
7. Paper trays will accommodate up to 11x17" paper
8. Software for scanning provides more flexibility in selecting scan options than old software and works really well.
9. Used several types and sizes of paper and so far no jams feeds everything well.
CONS
1. Size of the display it is tiny about half the size of the old printer. Makes it very hard to see what is on the screen and with big fingers like I have getting the right item pressed especially on the top of the display is almost impossible. Using a stylus for this thankfully don't use display often.
2. Document handler only holds 35 sheets old one held 50.
3. Tray where scanned documents goes after being scanned is WAY TO SHORT. HP reduced the height of this to save space since the unit is so big. so it is just under 1" and the papers don't stick out very far from the document feeder above. This makes it difficult to pull the papers out after they are scanned.
4. Software for scanning and printing are buried in a master program. Must start main program which takes a while to load, then select for scan wait for that to load then select scan from there so 3 mouse clicks to get to scan a document. Old software allowed that program to be started directly from desktop icon. Way faster. Haven't been able to find a way to do that with this software.
5. Smart chip in ink cartridges and HP constantly auto updating firmware to make use of 3rd party cartridges very difficult. Checking several ink suppliers looks like you can work around that a bit. I know ink is where the profit is but still ink is waaaay to expensive.
Apr 09, 2021 21:48I've owned this printer for a little over a year, and it's been smooth sailing all along. I regularly print single and double-sided b&w or color sheets in 8-1/2 x 11 and 8-1/2 x 14 for some volunteer work that I do. I believe we've printed over 1500 pages this last year. Ink cost seems average. Print Quality is exceptional for office printing (haven't done photos). I actually always print in draft mode and the quality is good enough to use as a final print (for color charts, maps, and other office docs). Know that the printer is large in size. I can't fault it for being so large when it has the ability to print 11x17, but just in case anyone thought they could just clear a corner on their small desk to put this printer - it is better off on it's own piece of furniture. We have it on a little 2'x2' platform and I believe it overhangs a little. One little annoyance is that I haven't figured out how to default the printer to auto-select by paper size, and I find it best to check the settings with every print I do (using Windows 10). I hope they fix this software/driver issue. I think the hardware is top quality.
Feb 06, 2018 15:04I recently purchased the HP Officejet Pro 7740 after my HP Officejet 7610 finally died. I needed a printer that could print 11x17 format and this one is terrific. The setup was so easy that I completed it in less than a minute using the wireless connection. I had reviewed the specs and was fully aware that the auto feeder does not scan 11x17 documents, but you can still scan them manually on the flat bed. One of the really nice features is that the printer has two drawers for holding different size paper, plus the ability to print on both sides. This printer is awesome and you can’t beat the price.
Oct 19, 2020 20:08The printer works great! Having a large paper supply in the printer is definately a lot better than constantly having to add paper every few minutes. Set up is a bit more involved than printers I have had in the past. I ended up having to call HP's help line to make sure everything was loaded properly and that did take some time. However, now that I am up and running, this printer is a major improvement!
Jun 25, 2021 15:32I'v only had the printer a few weeks but no major complaints. I loaded the basic drivers instead of the "full" drivers because I've had too much trouble with HP's software in the past - case in point, I still haven't been able to completely remove my old printer drivers. The printer itself seems pretty solid. I only gave it four stars because the touch screen is more difficult to use than the console buttons my old 7500 printer had and I haven't yet been able to access a memory device mounted on the printer over the network (I could on my old 7500 using the basic drivers)
Dec 24, 2016 15:34This was one of the most impressive displays of GREAT customer service I’ve experienced in my over 60 years! I have had okay experiences with the BB near my house but use this store that is on the other side of town from me because of the customer service. In this case, I got the notice within 1/2 hour that my printer was ready to be picked up, I drove into the curbside pick up area and literally within a minute or maybe 2, a very nice young woman brought the printer to my car quickly and was pleasant and wished me a very good day and gave me some type of compliment. I am sure the store had to be extremely busy but the transaction happened as if there were no other customers but me! Really great experience.

Mar 13, 2020 17:48An efficient, wireless MFP with fax for high-quality color and productivity. Save time with Smart Tasks in the HP Smart app, and print and scan from your phone.* Get seamless connections and strong security designed to help detect and stop attacks.Prints up to 22 ISO ppm in black and up to 22 ISO ppm in color.
This is a very solid laser printer! It does several things really well, and when it comes to the core functionality of printing, you will not be disappointed!
Setup:
Setup was very easy and straightforward. The quick start guide provided very clear instructions, and unpacking the product was easy. Just had to pull off some tape and plug it in. The toner was already installed and ready to go. Connecting to WiFi was super quick and easy, and installing on my computer was a breeze.
Print Quality and Performance:
When it comes to the quality of prints and the speed at which this printer prints documents, you will not be disappointed. As I would expect from a laser printer, text and other content printed is very crisp and high quality. Additionally, the print speed of this machine is great! I printed a 4 page document using the automatic duplex (double-sided) printing feature that this machine has and it printed in around 45 seconds.
Compared to my other printer which is an inkjet, this printer prints much faster and at a noticeably higher quality. As far as colors go, this printer also does a great job. I printed several documents with colors and was quite impressed with the quality of the colors printed. Sometimes laser printers can struggle when it comes to color, but the colors that were printed from this machine looked realistic and of great quality.
Scanning:
Overall, this printer does a great job at scanning. I tested using the document feeder for scanning and it scans super fast, which is a really big plus! The quality was also great.
That being said, there are a few capabilities/improvements that I wish this printer had when it comes to scanning. First of all, it does not have automatic duplex scanning. I believe there may be a manual option for duplex scanning in Windows, but I have a Mac and did not see this option in the HP Smart app on my Mac. There is a way to scan documents to PDF and then combine and re-order them to your liking in Preview on the Mac, but that is not as convenient as automatic duplex scanning. This is not a huge deal, but it would have been a really beneficial feature to include with this machine.
Additionally, while I do really like HP’s scan to email feature, it seems that this capability is long overdue for an upgrade with better integration with email services like Gmail. In order to get this feature to work, you have to set up an app-specific password for the printer to access your Gmail account, as well as enable “Allow less secure apps”. While it works great once set up, these steps for configuring are both less than optimal when it comes to security, and they are complicated for most people to set up. I have an HP inkjet printer that is over 6 years old that required configuration for this feature in the exact same way, so I was hoping that by now this would have been improved.
Size and Looks:
This is a very big printer! Be prepared with a large space to put it. Additionally, it is very heavy. Considering that this is a color laser printer, it makes sense that it is big and heavy, but you definitely want to make sure you have somewhere to fit this beforehand. If you are looking for a compact printer, this is not the printer for you.
When it comes to looks, the printer looks very clean and professional.
Other Features and Thoughts:
5GHz WiFi:
I was really glad that this printer comes with dual band WiFi capability. It is great that I can connect this wireless printer to my 5 GHz WiFi network. It seems that many printers still come with 2GHz only, so I was really glad to see 5 GHz on this printer. I noticed that when printing to this machine, it seemed to receive and start print jobs very quickly, and I think the 5 GHz definitely contributed to how quick this machine received and completed print jobs.
Touchscreen:
The touchscreen on this printer is a great addition and works really well! Touchscreen printers are so much easier to set up and maintain since you can input and update WiFi settings as well as other important settings quickly and easily right on the printer itself.
Machine Software and Firmware:
As I mentioned, I have an HP inkjet printer that is over 6 years old. The interface on this printer looks very similar and must be based off the same software, which feels a bit dated to me. It’s not bad, but I would have expected something more recent on a brand new HP model. The local web interface for configuring features and changing settings on this printer looks especially dated. Despite the dated software on the machine, it interfaces very well with the HP Smart software which is very modern. It also works with all of the latest features, including ePrint, AirPrint, etc. So, overall, the software on the machine is more than sufficient.
Reliability and Build Quality:
In all of my testing, this printer was very fast and reliable! The software and firmware are reliable and it handled all print and scan jobs very quickly.
When it comes to build quality, this machine feels like it is a really solid and well-made machine, so I would expect it to last a long time. That being said, I wish that HP offered a better standard warranty than just 1 year. This machine is not cheap, and I would have liked to have seen more from HP showing that they stand behind their product.
Toner Cost:
I looked at the pricing on toner for this machine, and it is expensive! A 3150 yield black toner cartridge alone will run you almost $100 from HP. So, definitely keep that in mind. While this is an expensive printer, I do feel that it is well-made and built to last, not to mention that is does an awesome job when it comes to print quality.
Conclusion:
Overall, this is a great printer! My biggest disappointment with this machine is the lack of automatic duplex scanning capability, but other than that, it handles all core functionalities incredibly well. Pages printed are crisp and of great quality, printing and scanning was really fast, scans came out in great quality, and the printer was very responsive. Additionally, it includes automatic duplex printing capability, which is a really important feature to have. When using the duplex printing, it was really fast as well. This printer also goes above and beyond other printers with 5GHz WiFi capability.
I do feel that HP could have used newer software and improved the scan to email capabilities on this machine, and I do really wish automatic duplex scanning was a feature, but overall this printer does a great job and has all of the most important features I would expect in a great laser printer. I would definitely recommend this machine to those needing fast printing and/or high quality printing capabilities. I could definitely see it being a really great addition to a home office or small business.
Mar 25, 2020 01:12Verdict: we love this printer! It’s now installed over Wi-Fi on all the computers in the house. With 4-in-1 functions, fast duplex printing and ADF scanning, it is a workhorse machine for any household and even small businesses. However, I am dreading the replacement cost for the toner, which will likely come sooner than we expect since it’s so easy for everyone to print now.
Initial impressions. It is heavy! Yes of course, it’s a big printer, but it’s heavier than I expected. Definitely follow the recommendation that is on the flyer as soon as you open the box on how to remove the printer from the box, especially if you are alone. The touch screen is beautiful and bright (and it rotates!), giving the impression of high tech. My previous printer still had a black and white screen with buttons on the side… This is a nice upgrade.
Setup. Besides having to rearrange some things to fit this printer in our office since it was bigger than the old one, setup was easy. Make sure you set it up on a sturdy table or desk; as already mentioned, it is heavy! The toner was already installed (note that these are “introductory cartridges” good for 1350 color pages and 700 black pages). The printer has many, if not all, connection options (Wi-Fi, USB, Apple AirPrint, etc.). I always dread the software installation for printers because something always goes wrong, but to my surprise, I had no issues! Download was easy and installation didn’t run into any issues. We connected through Wi-Fi and in just a few minutes the printer was up and running.
Printing. Printing is much faster than our old HP. It will be fast for most people too, unless you compare it to a full-size copier. The black and white printing is comparable to our old HP LaserJet printer (black & white only), but now having the color option is fantastic. And front and back printing? Yes! Up to 21 ppm, so pretty good.
Scanning. I tested the scanner with the document feeder and I was impressed by the speed and reliability of the operation. No paper jams, no bad fuzzy scans, or issues with the document format on the computer. It used to be so hard to scan reliably, but not anymore. It just works, and you can select any format you want, including PDF. Please note that it will not scan duplex; this is not a problem for us but consider your household or small business needs. The printer will email your scans but it requires a specific setup. I was expecting an easier feature like on my work copier where I can just enter an email when I scan and it automatically sends it there. If I do much more scanning, I may go through all the steps to set it up.
Toner. More so than our old HP Laserjet, the toner is expensive… Really, in my perspective, this is the only drawback of this machine. Make sure you check the prices before buying this printer so you know what you are getting into. I don't really understand why it is so expensive. On the plus side, it is really easy to switch out the toner, the tray just comes out with all the toner cartridges.
Things I like:
- All-in-one powerhouse printer! Yes, it’s big and heavy but for most it’s the only machine you’ll need
- Duplex color laser printing!
- Print from your smartphone! And any Mac or Windows computer
- Many connection options for your computers and network
- Fast and quality prints
- Automatic document feeder allows for easy (non-duplex) scanning
- Scanning is reliable and makes choosing the document format really easy
- Easy setup! This is not a “give-me.” Software installs and printer networking is usually a pain, but this setup was not. Thank you!
- It has a fax (!!), which actually comes in handy once in a blue moon
Things I don’t like:
- Toner is very expensive
- Duplex scanning would have been great but not such a big deal for us
- Scan to email feature could have been better implemented
Overall, this is a fantastic printer. I would recommend it if you want a solid printer for your home and you are ok with the features and cost of the toner. I would rate this printer 5 stars if it wasn't for the toner cost, which I think is a significant consideration in purchasing this machine. Otherwise, this printer is HP quality and reliability all the way.
Apr 02, 2020 17:08Overall, the M238 is very good multi-use device. However, there are some issues that prevent it from being great.
PROs:
* Set up is very easy. Just follow the onscreen instructions, and it’s ready in minutes.
* The primary paper dispenser (designated #2) is easy to access and offers a variety of paper size options.
* Printing a document is quiet and very fast, be it color or b&w, including two-sided printing.
* Scan function is also quiet, fast, and produces good quality reproduction.
* Touchscreen control panel is large enough for easy reading.
* The operational software HPSmart is easy to use.
* Unless you are a high demand user, the toner cartridges should last quite a while. That’s a good thing, because replacements are expensive.
CONs:
*There is second paper dispenser (designated#1), and you must look for it, because there is no diagram of functional areas. The numbers embossed on the printer front give a clue that there should be another dispenser. When it’s found, DO NOT try to remove it for loading it, as it is designed for hand feeding individual sheets. Again, there is no documentation regarding its functionality; so, being used to multi-sheet loading, I removed. By removing it, I learned the composition is very thin plastic and is a chore to get reinserted. I was afraid it would break before I got it back. So, you can insert single paper sheets or single photo sheets, which is not ok if you need to print more than one or two items.
* While the M238 duplex prints, it does NOT duplex scan. So, using the document feeder for scanning two-sided documents requires manual input, essentially doubling scanning time. If you have a large multipage document, you cannot load and go. You must turn over the document, and then send it back through. That can be tedious, even more so than the single sheet printer feed.
* Photo printing is awful. Colors are washed out, even on high gloss paper, and the printed picture looks like a photo from many years ago that was exposed to light. Also, when a picture is printed, it exits into an area inside the printer. To retrieve it, you must lean over if sitting in a chair or standing, stick your hand inside an open area recessed in the printer, and then pull out the picture. That wouldn’t be so bad if you received a proper print.
* For the cost of the printer, one would expect it would not lack any functionality and that ALL work product would be excellent.
BOTTOM LINE:
If you don’t care about quality photo printing, this is an excellent printer. If you don’t mind manually scanning two-sided documents, this is an excellent scanner. However, without those caveats being disclosed, I would not recommend it to a friend.
Mar 28, 2020 11:14Set up: The initial set up for this printer was easy to understand and was very quick. It took less then 5 minutes to get it set up and printing.
Size: This printer is quite large! We needed to give up a lot of valuable desk real estate to upgrade from our simple inkjet to this laser jet printer. If space is limited, this may not be the printer for you.
Looks: I appreciate that this printer is more of a whitish gray plastic. Our previous ink jet printer was shiny black plastic and it would very quickly become dusty. Also, the glossy surface would show smudges and fingerprints. This material shows less dust and doesn't smudge as easily. Thankfully I wont have to dust it off as often.
Printing quality: I was impressed by the printing quality. I intend to use the printer for crafting & diy projects - So, the first test was printing onto waterslide paper (which I compared to the same image previously printed with an inkjet). The quality and color was virtually identical. As someone who works with waterslide paper often-I would recommend this printer for those who work crafting projects.
Speed: I scanned and printed 20 copies of a full page black and white documents. The printer took about a minute to scan the page in, and took a little less than two minutes to print 20 copies. The process was very easy to understand and was quick. Even those who do not consider themselves particularly tech savvy will be able to use this printer.
Overall: I was very impressed by this as an entry level laser printer. The speed and quality seem very high for the price of the product and I would recommend this printer to anyone looking for a laser printer in this price range.
CAUTION: Be aware that the replacement toner is VERY expensive. Typically I purchase generic toner from whatever website offers the best price. BUT, there are several warnings that generic cartridges may not work. It appears as though HP goes out of there way to ensure that only licensed toner will work. As the printer is connected to your wireless network - it sounds as though Over The Air Updates may be used to ensure that generic cartridges do not work. Please look up the replacement toner to ensure you understand how much you will be paying for replacements. (I now understand why some people literally purchase a new printer every they need new Toner or Ink).
Mar 24, 2020 19:00This HP Color LaserJet Pro M283fdw is a very well built, feature rich printer as you have come to expect from HP.
Unpacking and setup:
This is a fairly heavy printer (just over 40lbs) and taking it out of the box is not that difficult if you follow the instructions. It can be done by one person, but may be easier if someone else was holding the box while you're pulling on the plastic bag to slide the whole unit out with the box laying on its side. The setup is quick and easy, you don't have to mess with the toner cartridges cause they're already installed. Downloading the full Software Suite (240MB) from HP's website took longer than expected, but it was probably some Internet congestion, etc. The Hardware initialization and Software install took about 5 minutes but may be faster on a newer PC. Once completed, and setup on the wired network, a print out came out automatically with the web printing email address and information on how to print from anywhere.
Connectivity:
This printer has it all. You can connect it directly via USB cable. You can wire it to your network via Gigabit Ethernet cable or you can set it up over dual-band Wi-Fi, either 2.4GHz or 5GHz which is great if you have many Wi-Fi devices on your network. There is also a front USB port.
Printing Performance:
I was impressed how quickly the printer wakes-up and is ready to print, almost instantly. I'm used to laser printers taking a while to warm-up before the first page comes out. It's rare that in such a home-office friendly package, it also prints double-sided (duplex), which is just as fast as printing single-sided with the added advantage of saving paper. On average I got about 20 pages per minute in mixed black and white, color and duplex modes. Print quality is crisp and color reproduction is quite accurate to the naked eye.
HP Smart App for Android:
I was really excited to very easily be able to print directly from my smart phone. Once you install the App it will prompt for additional HP Driver software which is also freely downloadable from the Play Store. The app gives you many options to print documents, photos, scan, copy, etc. I chose to print a photo from my local Gallery, though it gave me an option to print from Google Photos or Amazon Photos, if you have those Apps installed. Even though I did not use photo quality paper, the images and colors still came out really good, just not as shiny as it would be on photo paper.
Scanning/Copying:
Tested a simple document scan from my PC and again it was very intuitive, lots of options as to what file format to save the scan to PDF, JPG, and many other popular formats, or directly to email.
Touchscreen LCD:
There is a 2.7" tilt-able color LCD screen that is very intuitive and easy to navigate for settings and to manage the core functions of printing, scanning, copying or faxing.
Overall this is an excellent printer, versatile and very well built. It is heavy and larger than your typical home inkjet printers of basic B&W laser printers, but that's to be expected for such a feature-rich workhorse. Make sure you check the dimensions before you buy one. It fits well in my home office furnished with matching Ikea furniture and custom built white PC tower :-)
Mar 27, 2020 19:08The directions for installing this printer are flawed. It shows and asks you to go to the home screen, but gives you no directions on how to get there. The first screen displayed is a default settings screen. Being a NON-Tech person, I had no idea what to do. I did love HP Technical Dept. It did take the lady an hour to help walk me through, how to set up, but it works great!!! Plus the HP Technical Dept. followed up with me about a week later, to make sure the printer was still working, & if I had any other questions, or concerns. Love HP!!! Some plastic parts on machine are a little flimsy.
Jul 25, 2020 22:25The setup was extremely easy! The printer already had the ink installed and it was only a matter of connecting the ethernet cable and adding a network printer. The setting and options are almost overwhelming but it gets narrowed as you pick a connection and configuration.
The print quality is very crisp and clear as is the scanning quality. Oddly enough the feature that blew me away was the copy function! I made a copy of a color photo-quality image and the copier made a beautiful copy with minor issues. There was a very slight loss of color gradiation in a very few and very hard to spot areas. The color copy was very very good. I make copies pretty frequently and even tho i do not make copies of photos i do make color copies with various graphics on it and this all-in-one will not disappoint.
The 2.7 inch screen is a breeze to operate and navigate. There are way more options than you will ever use. it also has a nice feature of allowing you to print using already installed templates such as graphs/notebook, calendars..etc. The other nifty feature is the adjustable slot on the front of the printer which allows for printing on envelopes or specialty sized paper one at a time.
Truly a powerhouse all-in-one that has a small footprint considering the quality of the performance and the DUAL SIDED PRINTING!!
That's right it has automatic dual sided printing, it prints extremely fast and on both sides. No more flipping paper and mixing up the orientation...a great printer A+.
The only issue is the app for mobile printing does work but it does take some getting used to but the connection was smooth using direct wifi link. The printer also offer dual band printing, 2.4/5.0, i use the 5Ghz and sending wireless jobs is much faster than my old 2.4 connection, it spools large jobs very quickly.
I ramble on but it is a very nice printer.
Mar 24, 2020 15:32As far as quality and what this printer does, it is top notch. The print quality is excellent and the best way I can desribe it is smooth and vibrant.
Unboxing it you find a solid and heavy unit. Which is nice and gives it a high quality feel. Setup is easy and hooked up to my wifi network easily. Instead of the usual software drivers that are simply downloaded, you have to download the HP Smart app, at least on my MacBook. Some might consider this a negative, but the app isn’t that bad, and it does make scanning a lot easier.
Also, it was nice, and an unexpected surprise, not having the printer wanting to waste ink printing a "calibration" page.
The touchscreen controls works well, but it is a bit small. I had to be extra careful typing in my wifi network info as the buttons are so tiny.
The single sheet feeder is a small feature but very welcome. I print a lot of labels and its so nice just slipping one in right before I have to print one versus messing with the paper tray when I don’t want to just use the regular paper.
The scanner is also top notch. I scanned in a bunch of 4x6 pictures and the scan quality is excellent, and even if you don’t like having to download an app to use the printer, it’s worth having for how easy it makes scanning. The document feeder makes it even better. I was able to place a stack of pictures on it and it pulled them in and scanned them all. The app then lets you make any edits needed one by one, and when you’re ready to save it creates individual files for each photo and puts them in a single folder. Before this I had a dedicated scanner and had to do one picture at a time. I can’t tell you how amazing this is for me and a HUGE timesaver!
Now for the bad parts.
The light on the power button. This may be nitpicky for some, but it’s a major annoyance for me. When the printer goes into sleep/standby mode, the light on the power button starts blinking. If the printer isn’t within eyesight this isn’t a problem, but where it is in my office I can’t help but see it, and it’s not only annoying but extremely distracting when I’m trying to work. I ended up having to get a piece of electrical tape to cover it, which doesn’t exactly look very good or professional. It would be nice if there was a setting to disable the blinking when in standby.
And for my final issue. This is the first laser jet printer I’ve owned that uses toner cartridges. These cartridges are EXPENSIVE! Make sure you factor that in. As of the time I’m writing this review, the full set of 4 cartridges (black, cyan, yellow, magenta) cost over $280!! That’s more than 60% of the price for this entire printer! It’s almost better to just buy a whole new printer once you’ve used up all the cartridges. If you don’t use the color ones much it won’t be as big of a deal, and the black cartridge is supposed to yield about 1350 pages, so the sticker shock won’t be as bad if all you need is black.
Overall though, based on over a week of use, this is the best printer I’ve owned, and just the time it’s going to save me scanning pictures in makes up for some of the other costs of ownership.
Apr 03, 2020 21:05Winning in business means working smarter. This HP LaserJet Pro MFP M428fdw is designed to let you focus your time where it's most effective, helping you grow your business and staying ahead of the competition.Prints up to 38 ISO ppm* in black
Having a vast amount of experience with HP printing devices over the years, I can confidently state that potential purchasers should try to avoid this product for a while. HP is known for clunky software/firmware implementation and there are vast resources available which can be read online & support this historical context.
Immediately upon setting up my printer, I went through the steps of installing the various software packages available on their support website. There's what is called a "Full" package, there are "Universal" and "Basic" driver packages as well. HP installation routines will commonly crash or become stuck with no apparent reason. To compound the issues further - that I faced - the internal printing mechanism produced some horrendous sounds when it went through it's initial 'power-up' sequences for the very first time. I heard what sounded like some extreme mechanical collisions or slamming.
Once I ran through several install/uninstall attempts I was finally able to get the printer to work properly utilizing the "Universal" driver package. Printing, scanning, copying and communication to the MFP's internal configuration all appeared somewhat normal. I did perform a firmware update along the way but this new firmware didn't fix any of the error codes I experienced.
When I queried the "event log" of the printer (through an Ethernet connection), I discovered critical failure notifications. I've attached the screen shot of what I first observed. I also receive consistent error messages that the printer is out-of-paper at the end of print jobs. Something is terribly amiss here. I've attached a screen capture of that as well.
HP Smart is an application that will automatically install in the background of a Windows 10 machine, and this software will not only provide error messages and configuration settings - but it also links into something called the HP print & scan doctor. Essentially a self help diagnostic app. The HP Smart app is a prime mover in the popping up 'out-of-paper' notifications in the Win 10 notification tray.
I do have some good things to say about this printer.
It's faster than the M426 generation and looks to employ more power saving and toner saving feature controls than it's predecessors. Perceived sound can be highly subjective but my particular unit seems much louder than older HP MFP's I've used. Perhaps this is related to some internal, mechanical issues.
The Good:
Faster and noticeably more precise toner application - translated - clearer printing.
Compact in overall size & work space footprint.
The Bad:
Poor software implementation and a tedious installation experience.
Louder in operation.
False positives with the consistent, out of paper error messages.
Prone to "Fuser Drive (internal hardware) 50.04.00 Errors".
I can not recommend the HP - LaserJet Pro MFP M428fdw printer at the present time.
Jul 19, 2019 12:19First off, I love HP and its products. They are usually dependable and this one was no different. From the purchase to the setup (of course, I casually glanced at the directions), it only took 10 minutes to have it up and running. I was printing pages shortly after that. I love that it can scan, fax, and read from a USB thumbdrive. It was an upgrade from a previous HP that I had and I could not be happier. I love the sleek design and simple "footprint" that it has... it can set anywhere in a smaller apartment or in a corner of a home office. HP (so far) has proven to be a sturdy, reliable, and affordable option to home printing. Enjoy it.
Mar 08, 2021 09:03I purchased this for a laser-foil process. I can print almost any design on some papers and leather and then laminate foil onto the design.
Aug 08, 2020 02:47This was the one and only printer I wanted
Best Buy had with a good price.
Feb 06, 2021 07:55The LaserJet Pro MFP M428fdw is surprisingly compact for being capable of so much. I was expecting a huge box, but when it arrived I was pleasantly surprised by the small footprint. Setup was easy. I used the printer's touchscreen to set up a wifi connection (a USB connection could also be used). It connected easily to my internet, and my mobile devices saw it immediately as a printer on the network. I printed documents from an iPad and an Android phone, and that was before I did the PC setup! Loved the connectivity. There is an option if you are an IT person and want to set the printer up for an office environment to do so. Since I am using this in my personal office, I did not try setting up the office environment option.
I went to HP's site and downloaded the PC software, including the scanning tool. What's great about this, the printer can scan two-sided documents via the auto-feeder and send them to any computer that you have the scanning software installed on, as well as handheld devices. I tried this with several documents, and only had one glitch where I had to power the printer off and then back on because the scanner locked up. The restart corrected the issue, and I haven't had one since.
I love the fact that this unit can print two-sided copies as fast as other units I have had that only print one side. I printed a 17-page peer-review on leadership studies in less than 7 seconds (double-sided). Simply impressive! Print quality was outstanding. I had several other folks send docs to be printed. Both the Macs and the Windows PC's we tested found the printer on my network immediately and printed to it without having to do anything special.
I tested the fax component of the machine (yes, people do still actually use those...) by faxing a 6-page document to my workplace fax machine and then back. No issues getting dial-tone, no issues sending the fax, and I set it up to print me a success page after it was sent.
In an office environment, or even if you need a high-speed, quality printer at home to scan, fax and print double-sided black and white copies, you can't do much better than this HP. I can't think of an all-in-one printer that I have liked as much as this one, thus the 5-star review. Highly recommended!
Jul 15, 2019 17:08HP is my go-to company for printers, and sometimes, scanners. The MFP M428fdw is a fast, very good quality printer, scanner and fax machine. I didn’t test the fax because...who is faxing?
The build quality is high and it seems robust enough for home, SoHo and small office environments.
Scanning and printing are fast, with very good quality.
Downsides? The app you download has struggled with connectivity for me. This may not be the same for you, depending on your WiFi and OS situation. I’m running Windows 10 Pro over a WiFi sub network of our core Ethernet network.
The unit is attractive, quick, quiet and I’m not raving about it, but I will recommend the product.
Aug 10, 2019 01:36This is a great printer and scanner. The HP Smart App works perfectly with this printer and I love scanning things to my phone using the app.
It is black and white only and the paper tray is letter only (you have to manually feed longer sheets). I also had issues with scale when printing from my phone using the native Apple print function (easily fixed by printing from the HP app).
This printer is very compact for everything it does. It has a slower quiet mode, but it is already much quieter than my other printer in normal mode. It also is very nice looking and I had no issues with using the touch screen.
A USB cable is included and a phone line for the fax. I didn’t need them thanks to being able to print wirelessly and scan using my phone. It also has a USB port for a thumbdrive.
I would definitely recommend this multifunction printer based on the app and ease of use.
Jul 21, 2019 23:23I've been looking for a laser printer that would not break the bank for lots of printing on a small home office. Finally found it!
Box was a little heavy, but the printer feels compact and solid. It has a scanner, printer fax. They even included the necessary toner to start printing. Setup was easy. Make sure you have an internet connection, because the software has to be downloaded. But after doing so, the install was easy, I was able to set it up with my wifi network and now I can print from anywhere.
Print quality is great, as expected from a laser printer and fast. I just looked around and the replacement toners are around $59 to $79, but they last long. The LCD screen was big and easy to read, even for my aging eyes!
I highly recommend this all in one for anyone with a small office/home office!
Jul 18, 2019 14:25Upgrade office supplies with this HP LaserJet Pro printer. Its compact size easily fits into offices where space is a premium, and the HP Smart app boosts productivity by letting you scan, print and order supplies through compatible smartphones. This HP LaserJet Pro printer creates up to 19 pages per minute so you can complete tasks quickly.Prints up to 19 ISO ppm* in black
Fast and compact wireless multi-function laser printer. It is easy to print from with Apple iOS, Apple OS X, and Windows 10. The scanner works with Windows 10 over wireless. Only thing to note is that the printed paper has a curl to it.
Jan 30, 2021 16:03It may be on the small side, but it does everything it’s supposed to, at an affordable price. Nice quality printing, easy to setup and use wirelessly. Prints from my phone just as easy from my laptop. Need to make a copy or scan something no problem, easy peasy! Oh, did I mention that it comes with a toner cartridge that’s a sample but you can print like 500 sheets or more! HP has got your back if you should have any questions or not sure how to use a certain function. HP is just a click away to set things straight.
Aug 06, 2021 16:34Works great! I've been using this for about 2 weeks now and I haven't encountered any problems. Setup was easy as well. I was able to install the printer using the app they tell you to use and was able to install the printer without the app, so everything has been printing wirelessly, especially since I'm still working from home. I read that when some customers print, the paper would slide back into the paper tray. There's a little paper tray for the paper when you print. The ink they provided also has ink.
May 03, 2021 15:15I’m hoping eventually I’ll be able to us my Android phone and the HP printer app to direct the printer to copy or scan. My son came over and finally connected it to my WiFi. I thought about returning it but the next available laser jet printer was beyond my price range. Currently it prints a copy of the bottom half of the page on the bottom and top of the printed page. The copy posted had a riddle on the top of the page for my Grandson to practice cursive writing. Not certain how this option would ever be useful, but so far that’s the only way the laser jet has worked. If I can’t correct the issues soon it will be returned. I’d really Ike to have a printer that’s easy to use. The pages that have copied arrived amazingly fast and clear. Seems to be a great printer if it would just copy, print and scan the items needed.
May 23, 2020 00:31Awesome! It is exactly what I was looking for. Easy to use it. Excellent and fast. Reasonable price
Aug 16, 2019 18:45It over heats and glass broke on scanner within a week of having it
Feb 01, 2020 04:18Excellent little printer/all ion one! Nice size, quick and pretty quite. Easy set up and install and use, home office or personal. FYI - NOT color = B/W only
Apr 16, 2021 15:52Have to be there to get the copies, otherwise the paper fall in to the paper to print and go to the printer again and again. Making a loop.
Jul 15, 2019 17:50Print up to 28 ppm with this HP LaserJet printer. Connect it to a computer or mobile device wirelessly with AirPrint, HP ePrint or Wi-Fi Direct or directly via USB. This HP LaserJet printer scans, faxes and copies documents in a variety of sizes and has a 250-sheet paper tray to efficiently handle large jobs.
Just pick up the new printer yesterday and it was a dream to install the hardware to the computer. I'm sure it will work well to replace the older HP Printer that lasted 12 years
Oct 31, 2021 17:47Awesome printer! Print quality is great and scanning is easy. I also print from my phone which is amazing to me. Highly recommend!
May 01, 2020 16:02I don't do a lot of printing/scanning/faxing, but when I need these services, I need them to work and work well. Have just set this up and have already used all the functions. Still have things to learn, but, am overall impressed with the quality and ease of use of this product. The only hitch is that it doesn't do legal size.
Jul 13, 2018 17:33Well I may be a tiny bit jealous of people who can afford a color laser printer, but this black & white item is GREAT and just blows away all color inkjets in every other category. My wife and I are SO happy we finally bought a multifunction laser printer!
Dec 11, 2019 14:33I read online that people with Windows 10 had trouble installing this printer so I got the Geek Squad to do it for me. He had no trouble and answered all of my questions about the printer and some other things. I should have done this sooner.
Jul 29, 2017 10:49I needed a home office printer that scanned and copied as well with professional results. This printer does that job well and is superb at wireless printing, allowing me to print from my desktop, laptop, iPad, and phone without having to reconfigure anything.
Sep 25, 2017 20:00I absolutely love this printer. It was extremely easy to set up and works so much better than my older HP printer.
May 15, 2020 18:19This definitely was a good printer for what I needed although now I wish I got the color version but no complaints here
Apr 10, 2020 16:06Winning in business means working smarter. This HP LaserJet Pro MFP M428fdn is designed to let you focus your time where it's most effective, helping you grow your business and staying ahead of the competition
Very good black and white printer. Easy to setup and prints instantly. Saved over a hundred dollars buying this one over the WiFi version. Hooked it to a wireless router and can print from multiple computers wirelessly throughout the house. Prefer this much more over WiFi, too, since they always seem to take a while to print after clicking the print button.
Oct 23, 2020 17:57Quiet mode is a nice feature to have working from home.
Sep 06, 2021 21:33Windows 10 instantly recognized the MFP M428fdn and installed the printer drivers; but to really use all it's potential take the time to install the full suite of software that HP gives you.
Oct 09, 2020 15:22end user has issues setting up scanning, device is in Wisconsin
Jun 18, 2021 16:12This printer is worth the money but the scanning is a little slow but produces good quality
Apr 18, 2020 21:43Works great, scans and copies great as well. easy to use.
Sep 18, 2020 16:15I was able to provide a single workstation with a quality scanner. The printer provides quality images in an unclean work environment.
May 27, 2021 08:59Replaced an old strictly printer in our shipping department. This was very easy to hook up and connect, and seems to be working great. Under-skilled operator is finding it easy to use. pretty quick functions and speeds.
Feb 26, 2021 15:52Achieve high-quality document handling for your business with this HP LaserJet Pro printer. It provides copying, scanning and faxing to meet your everyday printing needs. This compact HP LaserJet Pro printer fits easily into tight office spaces and automatically turns itself off and on to save energy.
I bought this All-In-One device for a relative with poor eye sight. The unit still has buttons so she is able to us it. The interface is easy enough for her to use due to the tactile feed back provided by the membrane buttons. The LCD screen is nearly unreadable for her without use of a magnifying glass but that was to be expected. I bought this for her because she doesn't do a lot of high volume printing/copying and the ink in the inkjet she had was constantly drying out. I would recommend this printer to individuals with low sight and wish that there were more products with buttons and dials instead of smooth touch screen interfaces.
Sep 22, 2018 08:52Is made very well. The only thing that's different is that the drum and toner are 2 separate units now. So beware when ordering cunsumables.
Jun 19, 2017 07:09This printer is advertised as ‘All in One’ which leads one to assume it is wireless, which it is not. And nowhere does the description emphasize that fact. Also I wish it included a book manual with simple directions/instructions rather than have to navigate a web site to answer basic questions.
May 22, 2020 17:59Always choose HP products, Hp products have longer service time than others.
Nov 07, 2020 19:15This is so nice to have a quality laser printer that also scans and copies.
Apr 24, 2020 15:28I had a laser printer back in the 90s that unfortunately stopped feeding from the paper tray, so I replaced it with an all-in-one inkjet, but I got tired of paying for cartridges, or having cartridges dry out before empty. The price for this was excellent, connected it to my network, ran the setup and it showed right up on my network. Prints fast, works great!
Sep 10, 2021 19:59Use at my remote off. So far so good. Its real test will take more use.
Apr 13, 2018 20:58Easy setup, fast response printing. good value. Good fit for home office.
Apr 17, 2021 14:57Quickly scan, print and copy with this HP LaserJet Pro multifunction printer. It lets you connect your PC via a USB 2.0 port for a simple installation, and it offers laser quality and speeds for easy office use. An easy-to-use touchscreen ensures you can quickly set up this HP LaserJet Pro multifunction printer.
I wanted a laser printer I could put inside my cabinet. After looking at numerous printers that didn’t fit this one fit perfect!
Aug 25, 2018 01:00This is my first Laser Printer and it works great for me.
Feb 10, 2018 02:55After growing tired of forking over more & more money for expensive ink cartridges. I️ researched laser printers. This HP was the same price as many ink jet printers. Very easy to set up. Have only had it for a few weeks & it is working well. Print jobs look great & so far has been reliable.
Nov 15, 2017 20:46Needed a small printer to place in a compact area. Such an easy set up too. Very happy with my purchase.
Feb 17, 2017 22:45So reliable printer and it is a cost effective laser printer.
Jan 26, 2018 16:29Everything works fine until I tried Windows 10 wireless direct printing bypassing WiFi router connection. I could use wireless direct printing on my Windows 8 PC, but it was impossible for me to do the same thing on my new Windows 10 PC. I guess the driver was made only for Windows 8, and the same driver may not work for Windows 10. Except this tiny issue, everything is fine. Through WiFi, I can print from iPhone, iPad, Windows 8/10 PCs.
Jul 02, 2017 02:12First off a huge improvement over ink jet. So annoyed when starting a ink jet after sat for a while. Sounds like a cat hacking up a hair ball and takes over 3.5 minutes before page printed. Annoying as can be. The ink jet shoots out print in like 3 seconds. It is out before I can walk to printer.
Only reason I gave 4 stars is that after loading and linking to wifi network, I had a power outage for over 5 hours. It did not remember the settings had to do again. A glitch, not sure. Just hope it does not do that each time extended power out.
Otherwise very happy with this printer.
Aug 16, 2019 17:50When it comes to printers UP is the king. Specially LaserJet. I still have a color nnetwork LaserJet one I purchased 12 years ago with the trial cartridges that came with it. The black is finally low after all this time. Now the newer ones have less yeald per cartridge then the older models but they are worth every penny. LaserJet tones is powder and you don't have to worry about cartridges drying out like the inkjet. This all in one is perfect for home use and black & white is good enough these days. No need to print pictures since you can send to shutterfly or others for pennies to be printed and shipped to anyone.
May 06, 2017 03:14With fast print speeds and precision two-sided printing, the HP LaserJet M209dwe is perfect for small businesses printing black & white forms, reports and business documents. It includes the HP+ Smart Printing System that keeps itself up to date, secure, and ready to print from virtually anywhere at any time. As part of the connected HP+ system, this printer only works with Original HP Toner and requires an HP account and internet connection.
HP LaserJet M209dwe is a wireless black-and-white laser printer that includes six months of toner through subscription with HP, and is priced at $150 from Best Buy. Features include a small footprint, up to 30 ppm, 600 dpi output, dual-band Wi-Fi, built-in duplexer, a monthly duty cycle of up to 20,000 pages and up to 150-sheet input tray.
**WHAT’S IN THE BOX**
• Printer, power cord, starter toner cartridge for up to about 700 pages
• Quick start guide, warranty
**THE SETUP**
Like all modern name-brand printers, setup is simple and seamless across computers and mobile devices.
NOTE – This model does not include an ADF (Automatic Document Feeder). If needed, opt for the higher-level HP Printer with a 40-page ADF and the same 20,000 monthly duty cycle, LaserJet M234sdwe, $200.
Setup is through a smartphone (with downloaded HP Smart app). Printer sharing across the network and high-quality scanning is though the HP Smart app. Share to email, Google Drive, Dropbox or the cloud from anywhere where your device has signal.
Absent are a display and a glass platen on which to place documents for scanning and the ability to act as a copier. This is a PRINTER, not a copier, scanner or fax. More on this later.
Following the quick start, I added it to my Wi-Fi. Software found the printer, asked if I wanted to add it in my existing HP app and so on. To those new to HP, it will be just as simple.
All devices are now set up to access this new printer, allowing its placement in the most convenient location. Adding users is easy.
Amazon Alexa compatibility is also built in by launching the Alexa mobile app and linking the mobile HP app account.
For those without an existing HP account, the final step is to create one, including a credit card with billing information. Without it, the printer will not operate through the HP app nor will the owner be able to set up HP+ ink program.
Six months of free toner is available with activation of HP+. This requires a credit card and can be cancelled at any time. When the printer’s supplies monitor senses toner running low to about 20%, the user is automatically sent a free replacement cartridge based on printing up to 1500 pages per month. After the trial period, users are eligible to purchase genuine HP toner cartridges at up to 50% off retail cost, or cancel and find replacement toner without this program. Activation also includes a 2-year extended warranty.
**PUT TO THE TEST**
Once set up, and as expected, using this printer with its small footprint was a pleasure for everyone. From the time the print command was executed, the first sheet was produced in about 7 seconds from a cold start in sleep mode. Impressive. And it continued to crank out a series of double-sided 215-page tech manuals time after time. Now, THAT is impressive to watch.
I continued to print in an effort to deplete the starter toner cartridge, triggering automatic replacement. After almost nonstop printing a total of 878 pages, of which 437 were duplex sheets (found in the Web-based printer page), the printer triggered a replacement cartridge to be sent, for which we were notified by email.
Even without setting up the app, I was able to print from all our computers by adding this printer as any other would be added in settings. There was nothing to consciously download as both MacOS and Windows 10 had what was needed. The same was true when printing directly from mobile phones and iPad. From the pages I wanted to print, I did as always, sending selected pages to the printer and choosing one-sided or duplex.
I printed documents from Windows and Mac computers, Android and Apple iPhones, using the standard protocols as well as through the Alexa app on mobile devices.
For Android phones, this printer is also compatible with the Mopria protocols and app. Look up “Mopria Print Service” for more information.
Need to copy, then print documents? Use the HP mobile app or built-in scanning options on your phone, then print to the HP. As a workaround, it works! If you need to do a lot of scanning, get a dedicated document scanner, many of which do a better, faster job than any consumer or small business targeted all-in-one printer.
The HP Smart app is beautifully designed. From the main page, click Copy to use your smartphone camera to smart scan documents, auto-figuring borders, and then print. The Print Documents button pulls from the cloud or the phone, then prints. After setup, Mobile Fax provides in-app e-faxing right from your phone IF you have a phone line from which the document can show as the sender’s fax as I do. Camera Scan uses the smart phone camera to scan documents, or electronically scan existing files. And SO MUCH MORE.
We have placed it next to our larger HP All-In-One color inkjet printer where it is now the default household printer. The cost to print each black and white page compared with the cost of color printing on our other HP is relatively small.
**CONCLUSION**
Incredibly reasonably priced, HP LaserJet M209dwe is as easy to set up and use as any I have encountered and its speedy, crisp 600 dpi black and white output is as good as any I have seen at even twice the price. While it lacks some features as detailed above, most notably a display and ADF, these omissions are forgiven due to the low cost. Besides, the missing display is not needed because everything required for printing is in the app. From desktop computers, printing is by the same method as any other printer. Send the document to the printer and print. This little workhorse is small enough to fit where others will not. If you want a little printer that will exceed your expectations at its price, buy this HP.
**WARRANTY**
HP two-year warranty.
Apr 21, 2021 00:51I own an HP InkJet printer and have always heard great things about laser printers. Not only do you get more prints out of them, but laser printers also print faster, produce sharper text, and you will not have to worry about ink drying out. As someone who usually only prints documents with text, this printer has been so far an excellent addition to my office.
In the box, you get the printer, the cover tray, reference guide, and warranty information. The printer is surprisingly small and light which is excellent to move around for areas with limited space. Set-up can be done by downloading the HP Smart app on your phone or computer. Then all you would need to do is follow the on-screen instructions to complete your set-up. I had everything set-up in less than 15 minutes! Both phone and PC applications had an easy-to-follow UI and seemed to integrate well with the printer.
Note that this printer only prints black and white. As someone who only prints documents with text, this printer was perfect for me. Laser printers tend to print sharper text, and I can first hand say this is true. All the documents I printed out had sharp and clear text which made them stand out much more. The printer also prints vastly quicker compared to my InkJet which is perfect when printing multiple documents. This printer prints up to 29 pages per minute!
This printer is also eligible for HP+. HP+ provides many benefits if you are printing daily. You get to enjoy an extra one year of extra warranty and 6 months of free toner. You can also save up to 50% off Instant Ink. Instant Ink delivers ink or toner to your door if your printer’s ink or toner is running low. You also get access to premium features in the HP smart app.
In conclusion, this printer has been an exceptional addition to my office. I print mostly text documents and my documents have never looked better. The printer doesn’t take up much space which is great for smaller areas! The only thing I would’ve liked included on this printer is a digital screen but at this price point, I don’t mind the buttons. If you are looking for a new black and white printer that prints at amazing speeds and prints clearer text, this HP printer may be for you.
Apr 27, 2021 22:05The HP Smart app was something you can get from the Microsoft Store, and install that way, so no need for a CD drive to install.
The instructions are pretty minimal, and shows some pictures of what to do, rather than a lengthy paragraph. Initial setup was slightly glitchy for me, and I had to unplug the printer and restart the process a couple times (including my computer), before both the computer & printer were able to recognize each other. This was in an office building, where we share the same wifi, which should not matter, but for whatever reason, the app and the printer were not recognizing the new printer. So if the app says it cannot find another printer, and you click the refresh button in the app when searching, restart your computer and printer. To get it to pair, you have to hold the wifi button and the X button until the lights illuminate, then it is in a pairing mode. If you click X or something else, the lights turn off, and you cannot get it to re-search for a network, as you must now unplug it and start over. It has dual-band WiFi with Self-Reset, so it is fast, once connected and will reconnect if issues arise with your router/wifi.
NOTE: Disconnect from any VPN that you may be on. It will not recognize the local wireless network if you are on a VPN. This was not my issue, but it does say this as a requirement.
The dimensions are 8” tall and 14” wide, and 16 ¾” deep (including the input paper tray.
This monochromatic (i.e. black/grey) printer is pretty quick, clear (600x600 resolution), and holds up to 150 pages to print on, but only holds 100 printed pages. Not sure why they did that, but 100 pages is still a lot of pages. I cant remember the last time I printed more than 100 pages without going to take them out of the printer. The 1st page takes 7 seconds to print (single sided). It is a really fast duplexing printer as well. My other canon printer takes longer to print than this one.
The toner says it will last for about 1500 pages per month. I have not hit that yet, but I believe they rate it on typical printing of word documents, and not large images. Once you are getting to 20% of black toner remaining, HP will automatically send you more ink/toner. That is actually pretty nice. You get the ink delivered for up to 50% less than retail price. So if you dread the “I have to spend a ton of money to buy more ink,” this will help on your budget and peace of mind. You have to add a credit card to enroll in the HP Instant Ink. This model is supposed to be using 20% less energy than the previous model, and more than prior models before that.
HP+ printer comes with a 6-month subscription of free toner with HP Instant ink, as well as a 2-yr extended HP warranty, after you activate an HP+ account. The account is required to be set up, before you can start printing anything. I wanted to do 4.5 stars because of the requirement for setting up an account, but I see the benefits of having the account, when it comes to the included additional features. I just wish it would not be required to register your information, if you don't want to, but if you ARE required to, in order to use the printer for what you bought it for. You cannot print a page until you register and set up an account. Yes, you get a free 6-mo ink subscription, but that should be an add-on feature, not a requirement. You also get 24 months of advanced HP Smart app features, as well as an additional 1-year of HP warranty. That 24 months includes the ability to send mobile faxing, which is kind nice if you are a newer business and don’t have a fax machine. No need to buy a fax machine if you have the HP App.
Printing from your phone is another option, using the HP Smart App. I have Google drive and Microsoft OneDrive, so I can open and print from my phone. What is a great freebie is the scan functionality in the HP Phone App. Google has a similar scan feature, but the HP Smart App has the ability to scan and send directly to the printer. It allows you to crop and skew the image, if you don’t take a picture directly flat/parallel to the item you are scanning. I can save it as a PDF or image, and it will auto/manually crop to the edge of the document. So scanning a signed document is quick and easy. The app allows you to email/save to cloud/etc once you scan it (take a photo of a document).
The HP LaserJet M209dwe uses an HP 134A Black Toner Cartridge. 1 is provided for you, in the box.
May 25, 2021 11:52Overall
Amazing printer/copy machine—an excellent basic small (home) office product. Like all other wireless capable smart featured HP printers, the HP Smart app is a requirement. Not only for connecting the printer the first time but also for its mobile features, especially with a printer like this that doesn’t offer a scanner. But once set up it seems to pop up as an active network printer on all my Windows computers. That said, the HP Smart app adds several camera scanning options such as mobile fax and camera scan.
Not much on the actual unit in terms of user interface. There’s 4 buttons, power, X (cancel), Feed (downward arrow), and ! (Information) On the back you have your typical Ethernet jack and USB Type B interface. The paper jam removal points are a bit oddly placed. On the bottom just before the feed rollers there's a small notch, press and release the tray. The second is along the back, shift a slider and drop the door. But after sending a print to the scanner with the door open I noticed the paper path is not along this door. The internal cover, which is not removable, conceals that path. Pressing the ! button reveals that the printer is connected to internet while it throws a message at the very top saying it isn’t.
Pros:
Relatively easy setup. Pairing to a mobile phone/tablet Android or iOS is extremely straightforward and just works as long as you’re on the same network.
WiFi direct makes things far simpler as long as you are within the printers range. Just connect to its SSID using the pin it prints when you press the “!” button.
Solid construction.
High quality speedy prints for every type of file. Document, web page, and pictures.
Cons:
The paper tray comes with an odd 2 piece design. The top piece clips in and covers the top and sides while the back is left completely open. I thought enclosed trays were meant to keep dust out.
Apr 30, 2021 10:23HP - LaserJet M209dwe Wireless Black-and-White Laser Printer
I received this printer not sure whether I would like it or not. Well, if all needed to print was black and white documents I would give it ten stars. I do have a Multi Purpose Laser Printer that copies, scans and prints in color so the M209dwe is second string.
I have been using Laser Printers since the HP 2P or for approximately 20 years. The M209dwe is really a great printer and an exceptional value.
Positives
Very light weight - easy to move if needed
Very small footprint - doesn't need a lot space
Wireless - connects easily to the network
Fast Printer even when duplex printing
Negatives
Not really anything
A side note
HP offers this printer with 6 months of printer toner. In doing so you have to have a HP account and HP seems to track pages printed. At the end of 6 months, HP begins its subscription service for toner which you select a plan when you install the printer. You can opt out of the prescription service before the 6 months, but once you do that the toner cartridge will discontinue working and you would have to purchase your own toner cartridge. Kind of quirky but depending on how much printing you do might dictate whether you would want to continue with the subscription. For myself, I doubt if my printing volume would be enough to justify the prescription. This subscription package should not stop anyone from buying this printer.
Apr 26, 2021 19:12This is a compact, beautiful, high print quality, fast, wireless, duplex home and office laser printer. Supports 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz wifi. HP+ is very convenient because toner will be shipped to you on demand automatically and the cost depends on your printing volume. HP+ is not mandatory but with HP+, you get 2 years warranty and 6 months free printing up to 1500 pages per month during the 6 months. Every device printing to this printer must have HP Smart app installed, signed in and online. The app maybe occasionally slow however printing has no delay. It has the Require Private Pickup option where files will only be printed when the user confirms their proximity to the printer, very secured.
May 01, 2021 17:32Hewlett-Packard M-209e
I have been using Laser printers since the HP 2P, so I am guessing that's around 20 years. This printer is not my only Laser Printer. I also have a multi-function color laser that prints, copies and scans.
The M-209dw basically performs one function very well - it prints black and white documents.
PROS
Light - Small Footprint -Surprisingly Fast - Duplexes -
Has an Ethernet Port
CONS
The documentation is almost non-existent.
I have not found a USB port.
My final statement is about the 6 months free printing that HP states comes with this printer. It comes with an apparently special toner cartridge only works if you sign up for a toner plan. If you use this printer to print many pagers on a regular basis, it may pay off. When you register the printer, HP guides you to select a laser toner renewal subscription. You can opt out but the cartridge that comes with the printer stops working.
For me, this is new and I wouldn't let this stop me from buying the printer. If it was my only printer, I would be extremely satisfied with it and would have to evaluate the toner subscription plan,. Seeing that is a secondary printer, to belong to a toner subscription plan would not pay off for me. In either case, to use the printer you have to have an account with HP.
Apr 26, 2021 12:16The size of the printer is a winner. Small enough to store and use in tiny offices. Set up is really simple. Mostly plug and play
Wifi connection. App usage is strongly suggested. Black and white printers are great for simple prints and the printing is quick. The paper try hold a large amount of blank paper, so refills are far & few between. The ink cartridge is the only large thing about the printer but easy to remove & replace. Over all great compact printer with good printer quality.
May 09, 2021 11:03The HP OfficeJet Pro 8025e delivers increased productivity with fast speeds and custom mobile shortcuts. It includes the optional HP+ Smart Printing System that keeps itself up to date, secure, and ready to print from virtually anywhere at any time. Optional HP+ system requires an HP account, internet connection, and use of only Original HP Ink for the life of the printer.
Noticed a few reviews about paper jam errors during setup, this happened to me too and was about to return product. I finally discovered that the black wheels inside arrived at an angle. It seemed correct since they were tight however after some persistence to fix this error, they tell you to pull up the blue piece to check wheels for paper, while that is open, I managed to press the whole wheel mechanism down more into place so that the black wheels were no longer at a slant (mostly the right side was up too high.) They should be level along with the blue handle, which also arrived at a slant. Hope this helps the next person who encounters this problem on a new, out of the box printer.
May 04, 2020 01:41The printer connected to my network immediately. All devices sent print jobs with no issues. I also used the HP app to finish set up. Printing speed is decent. The email function works good. HP has also stepped up internal security for this printer for better performance. The touch screen is very nice, has good response to touch. There are audibles with different uses. The printer acknowledges when a sheet of paper is inserted into the auto feed and the touch screen responds. Color tone Is good, but not fantastic. I consider this to be more of a great office use printer. There is no SD card slot. It does have USB, Ethernet and Fax Ports. The paper feed tray works better than previous HP printers that I have owned. I would have preferred a more rounded edge designed housing, instead to me, It looks like a big square block and very heavy. Over all I think this is a very good printer, has been very reliable so far. HP offers 300 pages per month printing for the first few months at no charge when you sign up for the instant ink program where you choose a set price per month to receive ink as needed that will kick in when the initial period ends. I would recommend this especially if you need a work horse.
May 26, 2019 21:47SETUP:
Setup was relatively simple. Once you install the ink cartridges it will notify you that you need to install the HP Smart App to finish up. You can use your cell phone, tablet, or PC to do this. I used my Smartphone and it connected to the printer via Bluetooth and then I was able to setup the wireless from there along with everything else. It walks you through all the steps to finish up including a few optional ones. By doing this you also get a year extended warranty (for two years total) and you have 7 days to sign up for 6 months free of HP+. Which is a neat program explained below. Overall, I had no issues with this part of the setup or getting things to work.
I then tried to setup the printer to my PC and ran into some issues. Again, the application is required to get the printer to work which is a bit frustrating. The application had a hard time finding my printer and it wasn’t until I rebooted my printer that my PC was able to find it.
BUILD QUALITY:
This printer is large, and you’d expect it to be heavy, but it isn’t. Which can be considered a pro or a con. The entire thing is made from plastic (for the most part). But I didn’t notice much creaking or issues and in general it feels solid and well built. The trays feel alright and I would prefer them to be a bit more solid and smooth. The touch screen works better than my previous printer and is a bit more intuitive, but I still think they could improve the OS to be better as it is still clunky and doesn’t feel like a modern device. But that is me being picky.
SPEED/PERFORMANCE:
They report that it can print 20 pages per minute of normal documents and 10 pages per minute for colored documents. Scanning appeared to be quick. I don’t have a phone line, so I didn’t test the fax. The legibility of the text that is printed is an 8/10. Since it comes with multiple ink cartridges (blue, yellow, _, and black) the colors also look good. But I found that images had a bit of blur to them. This improved with higher quality paper. But if you are wanting amazingly crisp print jobs I’d keep looking. Overall, the performance is right where I’d expect for this price point. I didn’t find it too be too loud. There is also a quiet mode which takes longer to print but reduces overall noise.
HP+:
You have 7 days to redeem 6 months free upon completion of setup. The maximum number of pages you can get per month during the free trial period is 700 pages. It allows you to choose a specific number of pages you plan to print each month and then charges you a set amount per month for it. Prices seem reasonable. If you don’t use all your pages, it can roll over into the next month. They only send out ink (with free shipping) when the printer itself registers it is low, so you are never out of ink. They also report that this is cheaper than buying retail ink and that it comes with more ink, so you refill less often. You can decide if that is just marketing or not. This entire service can be a pro or a con depending on how you feel about signing up for yet another monthly subscription to something. But I’d imagine if you are someone who prints a lot that this would be greatly appreciated, and you’d likely save money.
FEATURES:
As indicative of the name it is an All-In-One Printer. Which means that you can print documents (1 sided automatically but 2-sided if chosen), scan documents, and fax documents (if you have a phone line connected). You can also print either from your PC or from your phone/tablet. I printed multiple things from my phone and PC without any issues.
Apr 07, 2021 08:48HP has changed style from the standard black All-in-One (AIO) printers to a three-tone color scheme of white, dark grey and light grey. The new décor is very pleasing to the eye, fits nicely in our son’s room.
The size is perfect for a home office or home print station (SOHO) compared to a large office AIO. The HP Officejet Pro 8025 is a very capable AIO as well, printing, copying, scanning and photo printing performed brilliantly for a package this size. The 8025 will perform well in a small office that has less demanding printing jobs. Have connected the printer to all our home devices and will use as a backup to our larger HP AIO office printer if needed.
Photo Printing knocked my socks off, lovely rich colors and definition of a ceremony picture we had taking of our kid. Very nice.
Panel
- Flip up design for easy viewing, nice.
- Bit small but adequate 2.7” Touchscreen.
- Easy navigation – full explanation on downloadable user guide.
- Tap on the “?” on the home screen will bring up a help screen which includes “How to Videos”, to cool.
App
- HP Smart assists you in the setup, scanning, printing, sharing, and managing the HP printer. Share documents and images simply through email, text messages, cloud and social media services, i.e. Google Drive, Facebook, iCloud, and Dropbox.
- Android app is full featured for printer management.
- Printing from Android, Chrome devices and iOS.
- Google drive printing - kid loves this feature for printing school projects/papers from home or school.
- Supports Print from Anywhere.
Networking
- Almost to simple to add to network. Windows 10 PC’s can scan the network and install printer and launch app if you want.
- Connections: 1 Ethernet; 1 Wireless 802.11b/g/n; 1 RJ-11 Fax.
- Was the simplest, easiest and quickest network setup of any printer I have used.
-
Full feature faxing (with contacts) scanning and copying capabilities.
Paper capacity is impressive for small office printer:
- Paper handling input, standard 225-sheet input tray, 35-sheet ADF
- Paper handling output, standard 60-sheet output tray
- Legal paper
- Envelopes
- Photo papers
- Double sided duplexing
Monthly duty cycle 20,000 pages
4 print cartridges (1 each black, cyan, magenta, yellow)
The HP 8025 is rated with the best for cost of operation, that is Big Plus in a smaller footprint printer!
The HP Officejet Pro 8025 gives you the features and capabilities that are found in much larger AIO systems for less cost and fits nicely into any SOHO environment.
May 26, 2019 16:54I've been an HP printer fan for....well forever. My previous printer was the HP OfficeJet Pro 8610 - which has been a tried and true printer, scanner, copier and fax. However, with some updates to my desktop and laptop computers - I have had GREAT DIFFICULTY scanning to my PC from these older HP printers.
Enter the new HP OfficeJet Pro 8025. First thing I notice is the new printer is about 40% smaller. That helps on my desk space. Next, it is quieter than my previous model. Third, it's a new and modern (two tone) design. Fourth - it scanned to my PC on the first attempt, and worked flawlessly! That alone is the WINNING ticket!
So far - I'm very impressed and will be setting this as my default printer next week.
May 16, 2019 22:37Everything about this printer is an embarrassment for HP.
Physically, it is noticeably larger than HP printers with similar printing capabilities from years ago.
The paper tray is quite small (especially for business printing) and HP has redesigned how you load papers into the tray - it is wholly unintuitive.
Above the paper tray is an extending plastic platform designed to automatically reach out to catch your printed pages so that they don't shoot out onto your floor. Even when I printed the initial alignment page, this mechanism failed to engage.
There are no ports on this model for memory cards to print from. Admittedly, this is not being marketed as one of their photo printers but I don't understand how documents from memory cards are not part of office printing necessities.
During setup, this model immediately identified the included ink cartridges as official HP ink cartridges. A little bit of research alerted me that this printer will only accept genuine HP ink cartridges.
It will not allow you to print in black ink alone if your color cartridges are empty or are not installed.
Scanning, faxing, copying, and printing times are average. Nothing stellar. Document printing and color printing (including photo printing) are average. Nothing stellar.
What does work? Their instant ink program - an ink subscription service (their "Ink Of The Month" club). Everything about their service is well defined and clear.
But in an new printer era where they will need to compete with other printers with HUGE non-cartridge ink reservoirs, please take a look at the size of the cyan cartridge that fits this printer in the attached picture below.
For a machine that is clearly being marketed as a source of ink cartridge sales, you can find other models with more or better features for WAY less money.
There is no way that this can be an economical purchase for home or office.
Apr 17, 2021 16:01This is another great all in one from HP as far and performance. The only criticisms I have are that there was no clear direction to remove the tape over a very small symbol for wi-fi. Could not get the copier to work; the directions in the paperwork and online were useless and so I kept getting a general error message. Took me a long time to figure it out. Also, the model and serial number tag is SO SMALL, I couldn't read the information even with a magnifying glass. Took me several tries to get what I hope is the correction information. I have never had an HP product like that before, and I have had printers and computers!
Jun 03, 2021 13:35This printer after a year stopped printing in color and only now prints and copy in cyan and or red. Faulty multi printer/fax/scanner
Dec 12, 2020 14:18The HP OfficeJet Pro 9025e delivers the fastest speeds, 500-sheet paper capacity, and up to 2x faster scan speeds. It includes the optional HP+ Smart Printing System that keeps itself up to date, secure, and ready to print from virtually anywhere at any time. Optional HP+ system requires an HP account, internet connection, and use of only Original HP Ink for the life of the printer.
I work out of a home office and, while I don't run through stacks of paper a month, I have periods where I need to print quite a bit in one go. More so, I have a need to scan stacks of documents regularly, so I find great use with document feeders. For my office needs I currently employ a HP OfficeJet 8600 Plus. Until I tested the OfficeJet Pro 9025.
First thing, out of the box, this printer is bright, bearing a slight resemblance to the 7000 series OfficeJets with a two-tone color scheme of white and grey. The middle of the body is white, capped off with a grey lower paper tray and grey document feeder on top. It's a much sharper appearance than the grey/brown of the 6000 and 8000 series printers. Additionally, the design language is much sharper and more modern, foregoing the rounded, sometimes "bubbly" design language of the 8000 series in favor of boxier lines and 90 degree angles. It's very square and rectangular, and even features a flat top to the document feeder, which has historically carried a more rounded apperance.
The new design language is very appealing, and seems more focused on function than form. It has a very purposeful, functional, and professional appearance to it. It also lends a more slimmed down look to the printer, which makes sense given that the overall box is indeed slimmed down by several inches. My 8600 was purchased because it supported fax, printing, scanning and copying, 2-sided printing, and a document feeder on top, but the machine is bulky and heavy. The 9025 manages to squeeze all this in to a smaller package, indicating some nice internal design efficiencies. While you don't move a printer around all that often once it's setup, moving between the 8600 Plus to the 9025 reveals quite a difference in weight.
In size, the 9025 is the same height as the 8600 Plus, but squeezes a second paper tray into that space, and maintaining the same capabilities with the document feeder. Front to back and side to side, however, the 9025 bests the 8600 Plus by quite a bit. My 8600 Plus shared a desktop with my photo printer, and had only 19.5" wide and 20.25" deep to fit in. Because of the printer size, it had to face perpendicular to my other printer, with the output tray kept in most of the time to avoid bumping it. The 9025 fits facing parallel to my other printer with room to spare, and even with the output tray adding 6" to the depth, only sticks out .375" at the front.
To accomplish this, it appears HP made some internal changes to the printer, stacking things a bit taller and further back in the box. The output tray sits a bit higher and a bit recessed into the case, and fits 2 paper trays beneath it compactly. The doc feeder on top also seems slimmed down a bit, allowing it to fit in the more compact design. The only issue I really have is with the power cord placement. If it were offset a bit, or even if HP included a right-angle cord, this printer could sit even further back.
I do believe some sacrifices were made to accomplish the smaller and lighter design, and after playing with it for about 2 weeks now, I think it's apparent in the feel of some of the materials.
First, the plastic on the 9025 feels more flexible and thinner than the 8600. When I open and close the doc feeder cover I feel like I am about to break it. This contrasts the 8600 which uses a latch to open and close, and feels better. Additionally, the overall feel of the 9025 is more plasticky than the 8600, and leads to some question of durability under heavier use or in environments with multiple people using it daily.
Second, the print head has a spongy and less reassuring feeling when inserting printer cartridges. With the 8600 there is a tactile feel to the cartridges clicking into place, letting you know they seated properly. With the 9025 I found myself checking the cartridge a couple times to make sure it was in all the way. They also made squeaky sounds when I inserted and removed them, and though that might go away with time, it has not yet.
They also sacrificed on the screen size with this model, opting for a smaller screen that is just over 1.5" tall and 2" wide, where the 8600 was about double the width. With all the features and apps being added to these printers, the screen size is really important, and I think this one is just too small for it's purpose. They also have a swipe down from the top feature to access settings and information, similar to a smart phone, and this menu is more challenging to read on the smaller screen. I do like the new mechanics for adjusting the screen angle, which doesn't require a button pinch of press, like my 8600, but I also believe this might be the reason for a little bit of movement when interacting with the screen. At first I thought there was a slight click action or sound when pressing a button on the screen, but it appears to just be the screen moving a bit under pressure.
Moving beyond the look and feel of the new printer, from a performance perspective it does very well. Setting it up out of the box was really easy, thanks to the HP Smart software guiding through setup. Additionally, you can use the HP Smart app on your phone to setup the printer via bluetooth. I did run into issues connecting to the printer from just under 6 feet away, and found it woked best standing 2 feet or less in front of it.
Once ink is inserted, the printer primes the cartridges, and I noticed it to be a bit quieter than the 8600 Plus, but also a bit higher pitched. My 8600 had a more mechanical sound to it when priming new cartridges, but I don't think this indicates any issues or performance problems.
What was indicative of a change, though, was the sound and action when the printer wakes to print. The 8600 makes a loud, mechanical sound when it wakes to warm up, and takes a noticeably longer amount of time than the 9025. In contrast, the 9025 is quick and relatively quiet when waking to copy or print. Additionally, the 9025 is quieter during normal operation as well, whether printing, scanning, or copying, even on the document feeder.
I found the print quality of the 9025 to be really good as well, providing crisp and clean colors, as well as sharp text, which my photo printer does not do so well with. I would still use my photo printer for high quality photo prints, since the color depth and quality of photos is great than the OfficeJet printers produce. That said, I have always found the OfficeJet printers to handle text prints very well, and the 9025 continues that trend. Running through a copy test, however, revealed some areas for improvement with the 9025. Using the standard HP test print, I copied on both the 8600 and 9025, and the 8600 seemed to provide a cleaner copy, producing sharper edges and slightly better color. Both printers struggled with the grey text at the base of the sheet, though, with the 8600 barely able to present something identifiable as text, and the 9025 providing only marginally better results. With the higher contrasting text both did fine, so it seems to be a struggle point with the lower contrast of the grey. 2 sided printing was also easy and clean, though speed of that did not seem noticeably faster than the 8600. I tried to capture some of the differences in print quality in one of the images I added, but it might be difficult to completely see them.
One BIG thing I have been avoiding with the HP printers is the subscription ink plan. My fluctuation in usage means it won't really benefit me, and I am also not a fan of subscription services tied to my daily business needs. The ink being delivered as needed with Instant Ink is a cool idea, but I don't like the idea of HP tracking what I print, or making it more difficult for me to print if I decide to use a 3rd party cartridge. I have also read some issues with customer service around the subscription, with people having difficulty canceling, or getting potentially overcharged due to peak printing periods. I did decide to sign up for a trial of it through the website, and while I can see my usage and plan info, I haven't used it enough in the past 2 weeks to be able to review the service yet.
Overall, I like this printer very much and am going to give it a shot as a daily replacement for my 8600 PLus, which is a big step for me. The compact size is a HUGE benefit for my office space, especially with it still including 2-sided printing, a doc feed, and the 2 paper trays. I wish the screen were about double the size, and I wish the feel of the plastic on it didn't feel as flexible or flimsy as it does. Because of those issues I want to drop half a star off the rating, but I still think this is a fine machine for someone who has a home business or work-from-home office that needs these features. Because I can't drop a half star, and I don't think it warrants 4 stars, I am leaving it as 5. It's fast, quiet, compact, light, and very functional, and I think it's definitely worth strong consideration.
Mar 01, 2019 16:42Printer came in to which I measure a 19x15x19 inch box, well padded and everything so the printer inside stays safe during transport.
Of course the printer outside the box itself, the footprint is 17” x 13”, and about 12” high I believe.
This printer is best if it’s sat on its own small table or perhaps on a dresser, or average nightstand. I have mines on the far left of my corner desk where my desktop computer is on and it barely fits; the upper shelving of my desk will get in the way when it comes to opening the scanner lid. I can remove the shelving or, set this elsewhere where there is room (like it’s own small table). Just be sure to have enough space. This is not your usual short or compact desk jet printer.
Of course I followed the instructions in the correct order; installing the ink was tricky. When opening the compartment door, and installing the ink, I made sure I pressed everything all the way in, and by the diagram there illustrates a click icon.
There wasn’t much of a noticeable click, but a soft one. Closed the compartment door, then I get an error of a “print head” missing and to correct or reinstall the ink.
I uninstalled and reinstalled twice, and finally got it to work.
I did all the setting up of the printer through the HP smart app, and everything works well and printed out a test page, and other stuff (resumes and coupons). Fine print quality and impressive overall over the previous older deskjet printer I have (which is also HP).
And I’m all printing wirelessly over WiFi. It’s visible on my phone, tablet, and desktop and laptop computer.
The paper loading tray is easy to use to reload paper, and I’m sure the ink will last longer through more printing until comes the time to replace.
I believe this HP printer is a great investment and, from a standpoint this looks to be an office machine, either good for work in an office setting or casual work done from home (homework, photos, etc).
Feb 21, 2019 21:49With a few exceptions, the Pro9025e is an excellent choice for printing, scanning, and copying. Except for one important function, it is the best OfficeJet I have seen from HP in quite a while. The merits and demerits are:
*SETUP: Once you have loaded the app onto your computer, setup should only take a few minutes. My experience, however, was not a positive one, and I believe it was due to a glitch in the software. Every time the setup process got to the point of connecting to my mesh wi-fi, setup failed because there was no place to enter my network password. No matter what I tried, the same result was experienced. About to lose my religion, I shut it down and walked away. The next day I tried again and had two failures. On the third attempt, the password entry page opened and then quickly went away. Another attempt got to the entry page and, thankfully, stayed on screen so I could enter the password. The ink cartridges loaded easily, and all was a go.
*PRINTING: Document printing is a breeze! Set your parameters, press print, and your document is ready in seconds. Quality is clear and clean. In addition, if you need two-sided printing, the Pro9025e handles that job like a champ. Ink is quick-dried, as it should be. In fact, it can print 2 sides in the time some other printers take to print one.
Photo printing is a different story. I have yet to find an All-in-One HP that prints photos well, and this one is awful. Prints are not sharp, there are broken white lines across photo, and very wet ink. I intended to scan and attach examples, but, after 24 hours, they are still wet. So, the attachments are photos of the printed wet photos. If, however, you have no plan to print photos, don’t let this issue deter you from considering this excellent printer for documents only.
*SCANNING: One of my peeves with HP all-in-ones previously is no duplex scanning, but the 9020e not only can duplex, but it is also much quicker than others that I have experience with. The first scan was a WOW moment. Great improvement HP!
*COPYING: Copies fast and well. Easy duplexing is another plus.
Apart from the awful photo printing, the 9025e is an excellent machine. With that caveat, I would recommend it.
Apr 26, 2021 15:49This HP printer is better than those tri color cartridges. More ink and faster printing. Double sided scan and print and also has fax. Bulk ink tank printers are great if you print constantly but most home users will experience clogged print heads.
For me this is the best choice for home and small office use
Oct 22, 2021 16:18This purchase (OfficeJet Pro) fulfills my needs for quality printing and scanning. The blue-tooth technology not only provides ease of use but the convenience of printing from multiple devices.
Nov 05, 2021 15:42We already have a 90 series HP printer but we wanted one with more features as ours didn’t have automatic dual sided printing and scanning. Once we saw that HP had the 9025e with all the features we wanted we had to grab one.
Unboxing:
The printer comes really well boxed sitting in cradled in Styrofoam corners. Once the top ones were removed it was simple to grab the two handles of the protective bag the printer was in and lift it out of the box. About the simplest larger sized printer unboxing I’ve done. Inside the box is the printer, cartridges, power cable and documentation. The printer itself is pretty large “a good bit over our old one” and you’ll need a good spot to set it up.
Setting up:
Like our other HPs we’ve had before we just placed the printer where we wanted it, plugged in the power cord. I wanted this to be hardwired on our network and there’s a switch right next to it that’s connected to our router. There’s an orange plastic plug in the Ethernet port located on the back below the phone jacks. You have to remove that plug to connect your Ethernet connection. I use a Obi VOIP box for our phone and fax so I hooked the main line from the Obi to the Tel line in on the back also.
After hooking up power the printer was powered up and gave instructions about inserting the ink cartridges so we did that. Inserting the cartridges is very straight forward, each is color coded and you just push them in till they click into place. The printer, after going through the new cartridge setup asked to print an alignment page which I let it do and then placed that page in the scanner and let it scan the page and finish the alignment.
The printer has a small LCD full color touch screen just like our old model and can be tilted for a better viewing angle, it’s used to manually preform scans/faxing/copying and adjust all the settings. There are a lot of options in the menus on the screen and you’ll want to familiarize yourself with those functions and settings but for the most part you can set up everything from the apps.
All our computers are Windows based and phones are Android so well be referencing only those operating systems. I already had the HP Smart app installed on our computers so it was easy enough to go into that and have it set up a new printer. If you don’t currently have the HP Smart app installed then you will need to use the Windows Play store to download and install it. The Windows app is pretty straight forward and has a simple interface for what you want to do.
This printer also has Wi-Fi built in but since we’ve placed it near a router that option probably won’t be used, at least not yet.
Use:
I have to say this is one fast inkjet printer, printing documents is lightning fast and there’s barely any warm up time. Text is crisp and clear and colors turn out very vibrant even when using cheap 20lb paper “that’s the paper used in the attached picture”. I also wanted to try out the scanner to check out copy quality and was amazed how fast it copied a color magazine cover. I set the detail on high and from start to finish it scanned and printed a full color copy in 28seconds, “that’s fast for a color inkjet”. The copy of the magazine in some areas came out clearer and in the original cover, especially the motorcycle helmet and how the colors stand out.
We’ve printed multiple documents and some photos and the most noticeable difference from our older 1st gen 90 series model is this one is way faster. The 9025e also has two paper trays so you can either double up your paper stock or have two different types “copy paper/photo paper, or copy paper/envelopes”. The upper tray “#2” already has the guides set up for envelopes which makes it very convenient if you are printing letters and want to include the envelope printing at the same time.
I’ve also installed the HP Smart app on our phones, and after setting up the HP account so the printer can be accessed anywhere I tried printing a couple PDF documents, “worked perfectly” and a picture of a Hibiscus plant in our back yard, well the picture looks like it was professionally printed and you can’t make out any lines in the print from the inkjet process. I even used non HP brand generic glossy photo paper “loaded into the top tray” for this and the results were excellent, “you can see the attached photo of the magazine cover and flower” although you really have to see in person how well these came out.
We don’t send or receive many faxes but it’s a nice option to have when needed. I did a test fax to a friend of ours fax machine and it worked perfect even with using a VOIP box “which can be tricky at times” and he was able to send it back without a hitch.
Conclusion:
With HP+ and the automatic ink refills for 6 months I know we are going to be doing a lot more printing than normal. Their plans start reasonably cheap “around $5 a month” you get 100 pages a month “more than we usually print”, and there are plans that get down to $0.99 a month if you are a light printer. The maximum plan for $25 gets you 700 pages per month, which should be enough for a SOHO or everyday small office. And in the end, instead of a cartridge running out during an important print, the printer will have HP sent out cartridges as soon as they start to get low, “can’t beat that if you are like me and always forget to order cartridges”
With the speed this printer prints at and the convenience of being able to print/scan both sides automatically this printer has filled in all the gaps that were missing “and features we wanted” from our old printer. So if you are looking for a full featured printer that can print, scan, copy, and fax this is going to be the AIO printer for you.
Apr 23, 2021 23:58I have been using HP Inkjet printers for years and have been fairly satisfied with the performance and quality of their printers. I currently own a Officejet Pro 8710 printer and love it. Having never seen the HP OfficeJet Pro 9025 All-in One printer as it was sent to me as a pre-release item to be reviewed, I was expecting to see another version of my 8710, but this printer was altogether different looking. I has a much more business like appearance similar to the HP Officejet Pro 7740.
Setup was fairly straightforward. After removing the packing materials and powering on the printer, I opened the front and installed the ink cartridges. I downloaded the HP Smart app to my phone following the included instructions. Evidently this printer is so new that you have to download a new, yet to be released version of the smart app. From the software you select add a printer and the app walks you through the process. Within 10 minutes, the printer was up and running. The display asked me to do a scanner alignment which first prints an alignment document which you place on the scanning bed. The small screen prompts you to continue and quickly performs it’s alignment.
Now for the specs:
Much like any decent all-in-one, the HP Officejet Pro 9025 can print, copy, scan and FAX. It prints up to 24 ppm black, up to 20 PPM Color. This beats my Officejet Pro 8710 by 2 pages per minute. It can do 2 sided copy and scan and has optical character recognition capability. It also has two 250-sheet input trays which is excellent (my 8710 only has 1. The output tray can hold up to 100 sheets. Based on these specs, it seems more equipped for heavy duty office work rather than occasional home office use. My one gripe is the 2.75” screen (I had to measure it diagonally since the spec wasn’t listed in the printer setup materials or on the box). The screen seems small and it is a little hard to read at certain angles.
Performance wise it did very well. I know it is only 2 PPM faster than my current printer, but it seemed a lot faster. It also seemed a lot mor sturdy while printing without the swaying my 8710 seems to do when printing lines of text. As expected, the print quality is excellent, both in black and white and color. Litter to know bleeding occurred even when printing a photo on regular printer paper.
This printer is also “Instant Ink” ready. HP Instant ink is a plan you can sign up for that charges a fee based on the number of pages you print each month. The printer sends ink level information to HP, and when the printer runs low on ink, replacement ink cartridges are shipped to you. You do not need to purchase replacement ink cartridges from retail stores when you are enrolled in HP Instant Ink. I have never signed up for this service, but I can see it being good if you do a lot of printing.
I am very impressed with the quality and performance of the HP Officejet Pro 9025. Since it is not a released product as of this review I have no idea what it costs, so I can’t give an opinion on it’s value proposition is, but it is a solid performer.
Feb 28, 2019 21:16HP has always been a strong competitor in the AIO market and the OfficeJet Pro has always been near the top of the line.
Its a larger unit but still small enough to fit on a printer hutch, in a corner of a small home office, but large enough to handle a solid amount of auto-feed scanning, a full A4 on the scanning glass, and half a ream of paper in the printer tray.
A few years ago HP made their printers Smart enabled literally with their HP Smart app. This has been good and bad in my opinion. For mobile devices on the same wireless SSID it makes printing simple, but for wired devices or multiple mesh network SSIDs (ISP and home mesh) or connected to different routers, this can be a bit of a nightmare if you don't know how to port forward or bridge different IP ranges across multiple routers. Anyways, that's a different story to tackle.
Overall an AIO is an amazing device, it will make previously tedious paperwork, printing, scanning, documenting much less tedious. Its amazing for anyone running a Small Office or Home Office, anyone who does a lot of online sales and shipping, and it is an absolute lifesaver when it comes to major life transactions like buying a house. The combination of being able to scan, print and upload directly documents directly from your computer is an amazing time saver and probably a big reason places like Kinkos no longer exist.
In terms of set-up, I highly recommend using the wireless setup. I wasn't able to get the printer detected using the LAN. Make sure whatever device you use to set-up is on the same SSID and VLAN if you have multiple. Also, for any windows based devices like laptops and desktops, once you've setup with your phone and the mobile HP Smart App, you can very easily just add the printer via IP.
I previously had the HP OfficeJet Pro 9025 and the 9025e looks to be an incremental improvement with slightly faster printing and scanning. The touchscreen also seems to be more responsive, but otherwise the two units look identical. I will end up moving the 9025 upstairs and connecting it to a different wireless SSID so we have better coverage and flexibility in the house. Great to see the 962 is the same cartridge system being used.
Lastly, this printer includes 6 months of HP+ which is a subscription ink program that offers free ink in the first 6 months and 1 year additional warranty. You really want to see how much you actually print, but for our household we typically don't print that much, especially in color, so we probably won't keep the subscription. If you print a lot however, this could be a really handy feature.
Overall, you can't go wrong with these HP AIO and this is best-in-class and does not burn through ink as fast as previous lower-end units I owned did. Definitely recommend at this price point for the features, performance, and ease of use!
Apr 25, 2021 23:17Winning in business means working smarter. The HP LaserJet Pro M404 printer is designed to let you focus your time where it's most effective, helping you grow your business and staying ahead of the competition.
I am IT guy. This is not the first time buying and setting up this model. It took me more time to set up due to computer won't detect this unit thru wired Ethernet network. Hard to describe, but just make sure you are knowledgeable to do the wired connection.
Apr 12, 2021 05:53Been a fan of HP for years as they make reliable quality printers. This model is no exception as has given me good service and no problems. Double sided printing feature helps conserve paper.
Jul 24, 2021 08:27This is the only brand and model line of printer we buy for my work. They are little workhorses. They are a bit pricier than the Brother's we used to buy but they are lasting much longer. Toner is on the expensive side, but again, they last.
Nov 11, 2021 19:57Easy to install. Prints quietly. Happy with the loading of paper
Oct 15, 2021 17:16It is a good printer. The tray drawer only fits 250 sheets.
Oct 06, 2021 08:36I almost always purchase HP laser printers as they have the best track record. This all in one printer is used for network printing, faxing, scanning to a network folder and air printing
Nov 13, 2020 16:00Great machine, no issues, fast and efficient, highly recommended.
Aug 21, 2021 22:11Took some time setting it up but I like the printer. I don't like the "must be at least 50 characters" Now I have at least 50
characters. : - )
Feb 05, 2021 15:41Produce the consistent, professional two-sided documents you expect from HP with up to 1000 pages of toner right out of the box. Easily print from your mobile device, and help save time and energy.
I use this printer almost everyday. It's useful and convenient. no more wire and messy lines. I had some trouble with installing it to my laptop but I solve the problem by choosing TCP/IP instead of wireless devices. I hope any supplies are last for long time.
Jun 12, 2020 16:50Very nice printer. My previous printer was a Samsung and it gave me many years of service. When I was looking for a new printer, I found out HP had purchased Samsung. So, I went with this printer. So far, the printer has performed as advertised. It was difficult to get the wireless connection working, but once it was setup, I have had no problems. When I purchased this printer, I did not realize it had duplex (double-sided) printing. That was an added bonus. No jams or problems so far.
Sep 06, 2020 08:55Purchased this printer back in May 2019. Can't complain one bit about this printer. It has performed perfectly with no issues.
Dec 23, 2020 10:21I bought this to replace a smaller laser jet I had before because it was a solid price at the time and comes with the toner. It worked okay out of the box and the print speed is excellent. However I was getting a lot of streaks of toner on my pages for awhile until playing around with it - shaking the toner up, calibrating, etc. In the end it prints okay but the previous printer did a much better job on quality. If you are printing everyday materials you don’t need to save or use as presentation tools it’s okay. Otherwise I would look elsewhere.
Apr 24, 2020 16:03It's not amazing but it get's the job done. The toner is the big money item.
Dec 09, 2019 18:05My team has really appreciated having a compact and wireless option. Works great with our Chromebooks, but was a bit tricky to set up.
Jun 08, 2019 16:40I can't review this printer, because I have not used it yet. I have not even downloaded the driver yet. But I expect this printer to be a very good one, because I own also an HP Laserjet 1505 printer that is more than 10 years old but is still in very good condition. I believe laser printers made by HP are the best laser printers.
May 01, 2020 18:14Quick and no brainier on setup , works wirelessly and prints from laptop, mobile or table . Saves on useless for me color inks .
Apr 17, 2020 16:29Winning in business means working smarter. This HP LaserJet Pro M404n printer is designed to let you focus your time where it's most effective, helping you grow your business and staying ahead of the competition.Prints up to 38 ISO ppm* in black
This LaserJet is an excellent and incredible print producing printer for any business or home office. It prints up to 38 monochrome pages per minute, and it is not loud. It is straightforward to set up on my home office network, its kid of a plug and play device. Once on the network, I connected the printer to my Google Cloud Print account, and this allows me to print basically from any place in the world where there is an internet connection. Cloud printer, when set up correctly, is handy and allows a business to run more smoothly. The box comes included with a starter toner that will yield 1500 pages prints. Replacing toner is relative easy. Double side printer is done manually, but it is quick and easy; it requires the user to place the printed document on the multipurpose tray #1. Text is printed with sharp clarity, providing results that I can rely on for my home business. Now my printings run more smoothly because this printer requires very little intervention- tray #2 holds up to 250 sheets and the multipurpose tray #1 holds up to 100 sheets. I use the multipurpose tray for specialized sheets or reprinted forms. When needed, tray #1 & #2 can accept legal-size documents. The device does not print on envelopes, but to get around this, I use rectangular shipping labels.
Overall, this is an outstanding small monochrome laser printer with professional print quality. It is very convenient and excellent for any office. I haven’t had a paper jam, and it prints lightning-fast without loud noise. If looking for a laser printer, I highly recommend this HP LaserJet Pro M404n.
Jul 17, 2019 12:41We have two older Brother laser printers and one of them was starting to sound funny when printing so I decided it was time to try something else. One of my first laser printers was an old HP laser that a friend gave me, that was back in 1995 and it lasted for many years, so I was always a fan of the HP laser printers, just not the pricing as the Brothers were always cheaper and cheaper to maintain until now.
Unboxing:
The printer comes with everything you need to get set up and printing right away. There’s the printer “naturally”, power cord, USB cable, Ethernet patch cord, an already installed beginner cartridge that’s rated at 1500 pages, and all the paperwork.
Setting up:
Setting it up was very simple, I didn’t even have to attach it to my computers USB port first. I just plugged it into our network switch and the HP software I already had for our HP color inkjet found it and asked if I wanted to set it up, pretty simple.
There are two paper trays though, and the one under the front cover is called tray #1, the tray at the bottom of the printer is tray #2, it’s sort of confusing but it works. We filled tray #2 with paper, “it holds 250 sheets”, leaving tray one hidden “it will be used for envelopes and anything we need to feed manually.
I did go to the HP website and downloaded a full set up drivers and software as the HP Windows 10 app seemed a little too limited. It will ask you how the printer is hooked up, “either directly to your computer or on a network”, I selected “network” and it found it within a couple seconds. This wasn’t a difficult set up at all.
Printing and Quality:
Now this printer is fast, really fast once it gets going. The warm up time is very short, just a few seconds and it’s off and running. I do like that there’s a two line display showing status and any errors, with our Brother printers you only get lights and have to reference a guide on top to figure out what they mean.
Print quality is superb; it looks sharper than either of our Brother printers. Text is super crisp and the fonts / graphics edges are nice and sharp, another great HP printer.
Impressions:
This model doesn’t support Wi-Fi or have full automatic duplex printing, not an issue for us as it’s hooked to our network and any two sided printing we may do “very rare in our case” can be done manually.
The printer itself doesn’t make any more noise over our Brother printers, very close noise level, but it does print faster, and the sharpness of the print job is enough to where you can see it upon close comparison.
The included “starter” cartridge does give you 1500 sheets, and a replacement cartridge is rated at 3k, there are high capacity cartridges rated at 7k sheets available if you happen to do a lot of printing.
The brother cartridges were rated at around 1200 sheets but cost half as much, as a normal 3k rated one so in the end the HP is actually cheaper to print with it just costs more initially when you purchase the cartridge.
If you are in the market for a SOHO printer than can handle a lot of printing then I’d definitely look at this one, it can print all day long and not hiccup.
Jul 16, 2019 10:30This is a simple ethernet or USB connected monochrome laserjet printer. Super fast printing which claims up to 40ppm. It is a matter of seconds from the time the computer spools it to the time in hand. Multiple page documents completed before most inkjet printers even get the first page out. However, it is single sided only with manual double sided requiring the user to place the documents back in tray 1.
Setup can be simple or complex, depending on how you want to manage the printer. If it is self managed it will use DHCP IP and basic default settings. If it is IT Managed you can get down to the fine details of how you want to use this printer and ensure it meets your security demands. All of the settings can be changed later through its IP web page. The web interface allows for most of the advanced configuration. This includes access lists, firewall rules, security certificates, syslog connection and enabling/disabling certain web features such as AirPrint and Google Cloud Print. It also provides usage details, ink levels and tools in case of print quality issues.
Once it was identified on my network I used the default Windows 10 drivers and the HP Smart app and have experienced a fair bit of delay in getting documents to spool to the printer. However, on a different computer I used the HP m404-m405 installation software first and had no delay. I ended up going back and removing the installed drivers under printer server properties and doing the HP install again and all works perfectly. The installation software requires diagnostic information to be collected, but that can later be disabled in the printer assistant software. During setup it also mentions that Wi-Fi Direct is enabled, even though the M404n does not include wireless.
Besides printing quickly, the black levels are sharp and detailed. Even sending full colored photos to it to print came out in a wide range or gray scale detail. If you are looking for a small quick black only quality printer, that you can customize to meet your security demands, then this is certainly a worthwhile contender.
Jul 15, 2019 18:22Honestly, when I ordered the HP - LaserJet Pro M404n Black-and-White Printer, I did not realize that in order to print wirelessly, this machine would require the user to connect this printer to their router with an Ethernet cord, which by the way is not included with the printer. The box contained the printer with the 58 A introductory print cartridge, the power cord, and some setup and explanatory paperwork.
So either you use the Ethernet cord, on you to procure, and then you will have wireless printing, or you can also connect the printer to the computer by USB. It is very important to download the HP Smart app; I got it from the Google Play Store since I use an android smartphone, a Samsung. This app was vital to the setup of the printer, and you can see that I have included screenshots of some of the pages within it. I tried to download the software to my computer through HP's website to no avail, but when I went back and read the original product request, it explicitly stated to download the app, (PLEASE NOTE: To review this item you must be willing and able to download the HP Smart App to your smart phone),.which made installation and connection a no brainer. The smartphone, through the app, finds your HP printers, those already installed and operational and this new one that needed to become operational and takes you through a series of steps to get it going-easy peasy.
As you can see from my attached photos, the footprint of this printer is small and the serviceable-area required to just place it on a good size desktop is very manageable. The speed to get the 1st page out is quick and all the subsequent pages. Print quality is excellent, but I have had issues with other HP printers and it is my bum luck that my issues seem to occur outside of the 1 year warranty. Be vigilant with any odd situations or issues that may make you guess whether or not there really is a warranty issue. I would err on the side of caution and call the HP group to establish any potential issues. I have noted that both Brother and Epson have extended the traditional 1 year term.
Jul 23, 2019 14:32Laser printers have several advantages over inkjet printers…but, at the same time, there are certain advantages that ink jet printers have over laser printers. The HP LaserJet Pro M404n is a perfect example. Is the M404n right for you? We shall see……….
UNBOXING & INITIAL IMPRESSIONS:
Many companies have switched to “environmentally-friendly packaging” (cardboard, as opposed to Styrofoam), including HP in many of their lower-end printers. Unfortunately, HP still uses (a lot of) Styrofoam in packaging their higher-end printers. While it does keep the printer ‘safe’ during shipping, the impact to the environment will last for several human generations. As for cables, the ONLY cable included is the power cord…there are no USB and/or Ethernet cables included. On the ‘bright’ side, the printer’s toner cartridge comes pre-installed.
SETUP:
This was both simple, and difficult. The physical setup, as well as installing the drivers & software, were a breeze. Setup consisted of plugging in the power cable, connecting the Ethernet cable (the printer can be connected directly to a single computer, via USB, if you don’t want/need network printing capabilities), powering the printer up, and answering a few simple questions on the printer’s 2-line LCD display. For driver/software installation, you have two options – you can download the HPEasyStart file (6.43MB), or you can download the full-install package (111.5MB). The first option is the easier, and smarter, way to go, as it will only download the components needed for your specific setup, and will walk you through every (well, almost every, as I later discovered, and will explain, below) step of the install/configure process.
As mentioned, there is a slight problem in configuring everything, that being that, while configuring the EWS (Embedded Web Server settings, the ‘Internet connection’ is not automatically connected. After installation is complete, if you go to the “Web Services” tab, on the ‘Summary’ page, under ‘Internet connection’, it will indicate “Not Connected”…even though ‘Web Services Status’ shows “Enabled”, and ‘Printer connection to HP Connected’ indicates “Connected”. As discovered during a phone call with HP’s tech support, the printer’s Network connection needs to be set to a static IP, as opposed to the dynamic IP setting configured during the setup. You do this in a 2-step process. First, on the “Network” tab, under ‘General’, click on ‘Network Protocols’, and change it to “Enable IPv4 only”, then click <Apply>. Next, go to ‘Wired’ (“Network” tab), then ‘IPv4 Configuration’, and change the IP Address Configuration from “DHCP” to “Manual IP”. If everything is working as it should, your previously auto-assigned IPv4 information should automatically be filled into the ‘Manual IP’ & ‘DNS’ boxes. To finish, just click <Apply>. If you go back to the “Web Services” tab, under ‘Summary’, the Internet connection line should now read “Connected”. Needless to say, a relatively minor problem, but a bit of a PitA in regards to getting the info needed to fix it (the HP tech support person didn’t provide the solution…it was jointly discovered during the phone call.
PRINT QUALITY AND SPEED:
This is one area that laser printers greatly excel over inkjet printers. Print quality IS OUTSTANDING…the blacks are “black”, grayscale is “grayscale”, text & images are sharp…no more, and no less, than what I would have expected. HP claims a maximum print speed of 40ppm, and it’s quite accurate…and not accurate. Using a 42-page document, I ran three tests, although the first two tests produced almost-identical results. First, I printed one page, from the printer in “Sleep Mode”, then one page with printer ‘awake’, and finally the remaining 40 pages, also with the printer ‘awake’. Whether the printer was ‘asleep’, or ‘awake’, it made no difference, which I’ll explain.
With an inkjet, printing is, essentially, a 1-step process – you click <Print>, the computer sends the print data to the printer, and it prints whatever was sent. With laser printers, on the other hand, it is a 2-step process. Step 1 consists of clicking <Print>, which sends a command to the printer that a print job is about to start, the laser printer “warms up”, and finally the printer sends back a command that it’s “ready to receive the print data”. The second step consists of said print data being sent to the printer, and the printer printing what it received. In ALL three tests, the first step took approx 1.5 minutes (+/- 4 seconds). In the first two tests, the printer completed the second step in approx 10 seconds. As such, while the “printing” took only 10 seconds, the total printing process took approx 1 minute, 40 seconds. Moving onto the final test, the second step took 62 seconds. So, in essence, this does prove that HP’s claim of “printing” up to 40ppm is accurate…however, when combining the time of both steps, the total printing process took just under 2.5 minutes. While the “total printing process” might be much longer than HP’s 40ppm claim, that’s still faster than most inkjet printers. Considering that the printing was done at the ‘Normal’ setting, an equivalent print job on an inkjet might have taken considerably longer (even if printing “black only”).
ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS:
HP lists the LaserJet Pro M404n as having two paper trays…and, in a matter of speaking, it does…but, not entirely. What is labeled as ‘Tray 2’ is actually your primary tray, located at the bottom of the printer, and capable of holding up to 250 sheets. Before I cover ‘tray 1’, I will mention that you can purchase/install an additional paper tray (which becomes ‘tray 3’), and has a 500-sheet capacity. Getting back to ‘tray 1’, this is accessed by opening the front panel, and manually loading (up to 150 sheets) the paper (a flip-up extender allows it to accommodate legal-length paper), or envelopes. While you could, technically, leave ‘tray 1’ loaded all the time, its real use is in temporary usage. If you want two different paper-types loaded on a regular basis, I would highly suggest/recommend purchasing the 500-sheet ‘tray 3’. Also, the 2-line display could be better. At minimum, a 3-line display should have been included. Better yet, a color touch-screen display, as seen in almost off of HP’s other LaserJet printers (including less-expensive models, wouldn’t have been too much to ask for. Looking at all their LaserJet printers in the same general price-range ($200-399), there are 9 different ‘series’, 5 of which have touch-screen displays, including two models that are up to $100 cheaper than the M404n.
THE GOOD:
• Excellent print quality
• Extremely high-speed printing
• Easy to understand/use software
• (Mostly) Simple to set up
• Compact size (for a business-oriented laser printer)
THE BAD:
• Getting the printer “internet connected” isn’t automatically accomplished, requires manual settings
• No auto-duplex printing
THE UGLY:
• For the price, HP could have easily included a touch-screen display
FINAL VERDICT:
If you’re only printing a few pages at a time, then an inkjet printer is probably your best bet. If you need to print in color, I stand by that same comment. Lastly, if your monthly printing is fairly low (say, less than 50 pages/month), then you should ask yourself if you REALLY need a laser printer. However, if you have any need for printing high-volume print jobs and/or you print over 100pages/month and/or you need printouts to be waterproof (inkjet prints are NOT waterproof, and WILL bleed if gotten wet), then a laser printer will fit your needs. The are less expensive laser printers (from HP, as well as from other manufacturers), but they will have less features/functions, slower print speeds, and (typically) only a single tray). There are also laser printers with lots more features/functions (including fax capability), faster print speeds (up to 60ppm w/ HP), and multiple trays (up to 5 w/ HP), but they can cost into the thousands of dollars. If you’re looking for a reasonably-priced black-only laser printer, with a reasonable number of features/functions, that also prints fast, HP’s M404-series of LaserJet printers will fit the bill. There are five models to choose from, with the M404n being the middle-of-the-pack.

Jul 16, 2019 10:06PROS
Fast at 40ppm
Easy web page configuration after initial setup
CONS
No duplex capability
Slow warm-up
Setup was not complicated but it was a little bit tricky at first but after I went through the required manual steps, it became very easy. It can be connected via USB but it does not come with the cable. Not a problem for me since I prefer connecting directly to the network and because I must have a few of them hanging around anyway.
If you print mostly black and white, this LaserJet Pro M404n will save you time and money, especially if you print a lot. I say that because if you print just a few pages here and there, you may actually find this printer to be slow. The reason is that laser printers usually will not start until they are warmed up and this one is no different. Printing just one page only, for instance, will take you almost 2 minutes with this printer. But once it is warmed up, it will print up to 40 pages per minute. My average was around 36 pages as it depends on what you are printing and other factors but that is still a lot of pages in single minute.
Print quality was superb and although inkjet printers nowadays do a great job, they still do not compare when it comes to black and white on a good laser printer like this one. Although it does not print colors, photos were very detailed with perfect shades of gray. Again, you would not get this quality in black and white with an inkjet printer.
Because I print a lot on both sides of the paper, I missed the duplex feature. That probably was my only disappointment but if you do not need that feature or are patient enough to flip the paper for the second page, you will be satisfied with it. It comes with a 350-sheet input capacity but can be upgraded to 550 sheets.
Although laser printers are used mostly in offices, I would recommend the M404n at home too. The cost per page plus the quality are worth it. The cost of toner may seem high at first but they can print thousands of pages and they won’t go bad as ink would. For professional results in black and white, look no further.
Jul 17, 2019 21:35We purchased this printer as a replacement for the CFO at my place of business. It is a great machine with a relatively small form factor, so it easily fits on her desk. The CFO seems to be happy with it. And that makes my job that much easier. Have always had great service from our HP printers.
Oct 27, 2021 20:51We had to replace one of the department's old HP printer.
It is very efficient on toner. They complained about the printer going to sleep. I was able to set the sleep mode on longer minutes, but auto-sleep cannot be off. However, after I changed the settings it looks like users didn't complain anymore.
Feb 13, 2021 01:01Impress with color and increase efficiency. Get high-quality color and fast two-sided print speeds. Save time with Smart Task shortcuts in the HP Smart app, and print and scan from your phone.* Get seamless connections and strong security solutions.Prints up to 22 ISO ppm in black and up to 22 ISO ppm in color.
Bought this printer in the middle of COVID and it came defective. It would print with a wavy line down the middle of the pages no matter what tray I used. The printer never printed well enough quality to warrant the price. When I tried contacting HP during COVID after the purchase NO ONE was available. Now that the warranty has expired, I cannot return or even exchange this item for something that works. If you buy one, check that it isn’t defective and pray that you can return it.
Sep 20, 2021 16:15HP printers have always been the workhorses of the printer world. If I want shockingly beautiful prints, I'll be heading for Epson and Canon. But if I need a printer that can sit in my home office and print whenever/however, no matter how long I've been ignoring it? HP all the way. And this beast is no different. It takes whatever we throw at it and laughs off every challenge. The only way to stymie it would be to starve it of paper and beat it to death with a cinderblock. Need a printer for the next decade? This is it.
May 11, 2020 13:20This one is great, good size but i has to return to get one with scanner
Jun 26, 2020 18:57As a small business owner, I print a lot! Easy set up, great color, fast printing, auto duplex printing, and its wireless!
Jul 24, 2020 16:39Very loud when printing. it good other than that. Not what I would recommend.
May 15, 2020 16:04Finally broke down and bought laser and many ink jets. This thing is fast and ez to set up. Worth the price in every way.
Apr 25, 2020 15:10Bought this printer and so far we love it!!! Prints paper quick and easy to set up to your smartphone or laptop. This printer is worth buying.
Apr 29, 2020 21:25I am pretty loyal to HP printers and thus far I am pretty impressed with this model. I love that it's wireless because I can store it anywhere based on available space and can print from both of my computers without worrying about cords. Print quality is awesome and printing front/back without extra work by me is always a plus. Would definitely recommend it!
Aug 08, 2020 13:51Print documents from home with this HP LaserJet Pro printer. This printer has mobile capabilities, so you can print directly from your smartphone or other device, and the high-capacity cartridge lets you print up to two times more pages than standard print cartridges. This HP LaserJet Pro printer delivers up to 30 pages per minute to reduce wait time.
The printer works great for what I need it to do. Very reasonable price for a fast laser printer, built in duplexer with a small foot print. Easy to setup on wireless network.
Aug 10, 2018 16:23when purchase ,the Machine working good, around use that for six month,it got print trouble, huge black vertical line on copy. After changing the carriage and drum, stay the same.
Dec 19, 2019 17:20Easy setup. Prints fast. Good copies. Nice size. HPs always make very good printers. A little hard to clear jams but doesn't jam oftenMid.
Nov 20, 2021 10:36Plugged in using ethernet to home router. Printing on Pixel3 and IPad did not need any special software (printer just showed up in the list of printers to print to). Printing on another android phone would not work until downloading some HP print software. Overall, works well.
Apr 26, 2021 07:27I have purchased quite a few printers in 20 years and this is hands down the best printer. I wanted a color printer but they’re too pricey! So I opted for a b/w printer and hey I forget it’s b/w because of the quality and speed of print. Awesome job HP!
Feb 06, 2021 09:06This is a great printer. Good quality and very fast. Highly recommended.
Jun 08, 2021 14:34I'm using this printer for almost an year now. No problems and still there is much ink on it. Easy to connect over wifi.
Oct 16, 2020 16:35I gave my other printer to my son for college and got this one. Fast, but it is also wireless (so I didn't need my "repeater" next to it to receive signals in the kitchen). Solid. Only bad thing is that it is so new it is hard to find aftermarket (cheaper) cartidges for it, but works great.
Oct 20, 2017 16:28With fast print speeds, precision two-sided printing plus scan and copy, the HP LaserJet MFP M234dwe is perfect for small businesses printing black & white forms, reports and business documents. It includes the HP+ Smart Printing System that keeps itself up to date, secure, and ready to print from virtually anywhere at any time. As part of the connected HP+ system, this printer only works with Original HP Toner and requires an HP account and internet connection.
Over 20 years ago I purchased the HP Laserjet 1100. It lasted over 10 years and never wore out. I packaged it up, and it is still sitting in my closet to this day because it is still a great printer. Of course, I replaced it with another HP laser printer. And have never purchased anything but HP printers since.
I was excited about getting the LaserJet M234dwe Wireless Black-and-White Laser Printer because of all the positive feedback. I was not disappointed.
The printer came via FedEx, and was packed so well that it could probably withstand a drop from several stories...but I'm not going to be the one to test that out. As with most printers, it had a bit of prepping to do to get it ready, such as removing all the tape, cardboard, etc.The actual physical setup was super easy after that.
Now, the installation of the software was a bit tedious...not horrible, but like I said, a bit tedious. But once I got the HP Smart app installed, I realized it was well worth the wait. It is one of the best printer apps I have ever used...it is so well thought out and designed that it is truly a do-it-all printing/scanning app. You can change the settings on the printer, set up new connections, add new printers, scan, EVERYTHING. And it is super easy to switch between all your HP printers and scanners. I actually have three HP printers for my home-based business, and I can control all of them from this one app,
THE PRINTING
The quality of the printing is flawless...whether it be simple letterhead, or complex forms, the text and images are SUPER CRISP. For kicks and giggles I decided to print three photos. What can I say except I was amazed by the clarity. Of course the printouts were not photo quality, but for black and white laser printing, they were amazing.
There is a short wait before the actual printing begins. This is completely normal and is in no way out of line. But it is noticeable. Once the print starts, however, it is lightning fast, and I do mean fast. Multiple pages print in no time at all.
HP offers an ink and a toner replacement program that in the past I have not participated in. However, I decided to sign on this time around. They offer SIX MONTHS of free toner...SIX MONTHS! And they offer several different usage options, such as 100 pages per month, all the way up to over 1,000 pages per month. I don't know if you have ever purchased a toner cartridge, but I realized really quickly that there is no way to lose with the automatic toner replacement. Plus, they give you 1,500 pages for the first six months (the trial period).
I am nothing but IMPRESSED with this printer. It is a huge asset to my home office, and it is so well-built and solid that I expect it will end up in the closet with my HP 1100 in about ten years. Seriously, I hate to sound all gushy over a printer, but THIS IS THE ONE TO BUY!
I would recommend this to anybody wanting/needing a superior laser printer.
Apr 25, 2021 20:35Impressed, HP+ is good value, not mandatory
HP+: I was previously suspicious of HP Instant Ink, but HP's new offering HP+ is infinitely better, fairer, and offers real value. Out of the box, if you sign up to HP+ you get 6 months of free ink and 1500 pages per month. This is more than fair and enough to work out what the right HP+ would be best for your needs. And if you're not interested in HP+ you don't have to have it and just buy genuine HP cartridges instead. The lowest HP+ cost is $1.99 a month for 50 pages. Which be enough for most home use and since you can upgrade downgrade plans, I am confident that when everyone is back in the office we will be able to manage HP+ effectively. By my math though, HP+ makes sense for me. One of the benefits is that HP+ also doubles the warranty (2 years) and invests in re-forestation for every page you print. So it's effectively a green printing subscription - which I personally like. I am actually surprised HP doesn't market this benefit more. See the image uploaded I screenshotted from the HP+ app.
Setup: The HP M234dwe supports 802.11n and setup is all done via the app. Setup was surprisingly easy, probably the best setup experience ever for a wireless printer.
Print Quality: Print quality is great. It's a 600dpi laser, so you can't fault the quality. The speed of the M234dwe is rated at 30ppm. Which kind of makes me laugh, because on the base HP+ plan that means you could go through your 50 monthly pages in 2min. You can print via AirPrint on the iPhone/iPad - which is a huge plus for me.
Scan Quality: The M234dwe Scanner is 600dpi as well. I like that you can scan from the app straight to your phone. Such a game-changer, no more firing up my PC when I just want to scan a page to email to someone or keep a copy of a receipt.
Other Thoughts: I didn't know where to put this, but hope it helps someone. There are some weird design decisions. The paper try design is weird. Parts of it fold up, some clip-on, and it's not completely enclosed so there's an open slot at the front. I really don't know what HP was going for with the M234dwe but I really wish it was a fully enclosed tray that fit neatly under the print and didn't stick out a few inches from the front. I also don't like the little LCD screen that just shows error codes. It's not intuitive and while you can get all of the real information from the app. I wish, so much, that it was a more useful screen or just HP got rid of it altogether. Printers that show error codes should be a thing of the past. These are not reasons not to buy, just to let others know. I am still very happy with the printer.
Apr 28, 2021 16:18This printer/copier/scanner is truly an amazing piece of engineering marvel. It is a very nice machine, It really is impressive and when you take it out of the box, you'll see what I mean. It is sturdy, more like a small refrigerator than a printer/copier/scanner in that it is very rock solid. Not junky or cheesy. Very impressed.
Setup could not be easier. Follow the link to the app, download, open, and follow the instructions step by step, to connect to your wifi network for wireless printing.
You'll hit a speed bump in the setup because of the HP+ thing. I feel like I'm held hostage because it is like you have to sign up for this to be able to print. Even if you don't give your credit card for the free toner/subscription thing, you have to sign up and agree that you'll never use a non-HP toner cartridge (in fairness, it does say this on the label and maybe the box too). I felt trapped, like I had to sucumb to this thing I didn't really want to do right now, I just wanted to print, scan, enjoy my new purchase and not get bound up in these types of monumental decisions. Would be best saved for after you have a chance to use the machine, feel good about it, and then sign up.
As for the printer, it prints fast, nice, and with great quality. Seriously nice. Scanning? I was able to scan a necessary document, name it, and export it to Acrobat as a PDF within record time. Seriously fast. And high quality too. Need a quick copy of something, fast, easy, and no worries. I love this machine, it is really nice, solid, no quirks or problems. And my lights did not dim in the house when it printed as was the case with laser printers of yesteryear.
The buttons for copy/scan, etc. are easy and intuitive. The app is more than intuitive. The paper feed is open, not a tray, and I like that alot. I hate pulling out that darn tray and all that - with this, just slide some more paper into the slot and you are good to go. Easy.
Removing/changing the toner cart and fixing jammed paper if you get any, will be super easy. I was able to pull the toner cart out and required no effort or "tech" to do...jams will be able to be seen during the travel path once the cover is open. Super easy, super friendly to those in your home or office who fix these things when a jam eventually happens. I noticed this had very surefooted paper feeding, no wishy washy misfeeds - it took the paper in confidently!
Back to the HP+ thing. After you realize that the normal yield cartridge costs $50 and the high yield one costs $75, you start to think, I hate going to buy it and spending so much at one time. The HP+ per page/toner subscription is reasonably priced and frankly a much easier pill to swallow as they say, rather than rolling up to your local office supply store to spend $75 on a Saturday afternoon. Just pay each month, and then when you need a new cart, they send it to you. Return the old one, and it is just automated and easy. Seems to be a discounted price to print per page, than to buy a cartridge at retail. So in the end, a good value, just don't want to be bogged down during the setup.
You will never go wrong with HP. Their stuff works and it works well. You must realize and accept, you'll only be able to use HP carts along the way and either sign up for HP+, or maybe someone will offer up a cart with an old chip in it so you can save printing costs - buyer beware, those knock off or reloaded carts are always a bad business decision with the quality of what you receive - at least that has been my experience in the past.
As we move towards being more "online" and less printing of things, my guess is that printer companies need to capture their market share now and keep users on board before they fall off the edge and go mostly online. Just thinking out loud. Trust me when I tell you I would be team HP all the way, because I know their stuff works, lasts forever, and frankly were there with me from the early days. I trust HP and I know you will love this product. Just don't think you'll be able to cheap out and get knock off toner for less - it clearly says no non-HP carts can be used. But accepting the HP+ plan, seeing the rates, makes sense. And to know it'll arrive when I need it, makes me a bigger fan in the end.
Apr 28, 2021 21:08I am always on the lookout for a good and reliable laser printer for my home office and kids school needs. I was glad that HP came out with this M234dwe laser printer which met all of our needs. The beauty about this compared to my other laser printer is the ability to utilize HP Smart app, so I can print from anywhere in the house as long as I am connected to the WiFi and printer itself.
Opening up the box, you are met with his nice compact, but not too large/small printer. It is a solid build and fits in my desk nicely. Connecting it to my WiFi and to the HP Smart app was easy and flawless. There was no need to print up a page with the printer WiFi code (compared to other HP ink printers). You also have 6 months free toner through the HP Smart app which we would need with all of the printing needs due to home learning and working at home.
I was amazed at how fast this printer is in printing both one-sided and double-sided pages. I was able to print up my dtr’s history work (about 20 pages) in under a minute. The quality of the print is also excellent, and I noticed when using better quality paper with 24lbs makes a whole lot of difference. And through the app, you can scan to the cloud straight to any cloud based sites/apps that you use. As I use both Google Drive and Dropbox, the app makes it easy to upload for you to save and print later on. Using the scanner, you are able to scan up to 600x600 resolution.
On the top of the printer you have the glass scanner which dominates the entire landscape. The only problems that I have is the glowing light right below the HP sign. The light is about 2 inches long and changes color. I still don’t know the purpose of this light but it is distracting at night (my office is also my bedroom) and there is no way to turn it off unless I unplug it. Also, the cover for the paper tray is very flimsy and can get knocked out of line easily.
Overall, I am very happy with this printer and can’t wait to see how easy it is to enact the new toner before the 6months are up.
Apr 28, 2021 18:02Ok. I am a long time HP fan. I still own 2 dinosaur laser printers 1020 and color laser 2600n. I have owned these printers for over 10 now and they still work after many toner cartridges later.
I still use the 1020 for BW till this day. So my love for HP is there.
Fast forward to today and this model.
Pros:
Sleek
Modern Look
Multifunction with scanner
HP+ free ink for 6 months and extended warranty.
Customer service was friendly and they actually figured out the setup issue.
Cons:
Let's get this out of the way. Setup was a pain. I tried to setup with Android mobile and it was a no go. I reset per the instructions and it was a a no go. I conceded and called help on HP. After 1.5 hours with mobile support I had to take out a PC. Apparently this new model has a flaw with Android registration to HP+ and it needed a windows based PC to get over this issue.
Second Con is I had to enter my payment information in order to get HP+. Not too fond of this but ok. Wished it had scan to cloud feature. Scan to device is easy to use with app.
After setup was complete. I registered the printer on all my devices.
Kid's Chrome books
Mine and my wife's surfaces
Mine and my wife's android phones
And we were up and running.
If it wasn't for the setup issue I would give this printer 5 stars.
HP should probably fix the setup issue with Android so their customer service does not get flooded and also match compatibility on the specs.
Apr 20, 2021 19:14Great black and white laser printer. Its amazingly fast, and my documents come out with inky blacks and in great quality.
Setting it up was easy, just download the HP smart app from the windows store and follow the prompts. The printer sets up over your wireless network (it does have an ethernet port in the back, but I had no need to use it, just fyi). Afterwards you can print from your PC or you can also download the HP smart app to your phone, add the printer there and you can print from your phone too.
It includes one toner; however, it does come with 6 months of free toner via their HP+ subscription, afterwards you can sign up for different plans/levels so you can get your toner delivered to you automatically when its needed.
It has a paper auto feeder on the bottom with see thru gray dust cover (real nice) just for printing though, it also has a flatbed scanner where you can scan/copy documents (no auto feeder on this one though, you must place each document one by one).
I highly recommend this no-frills laser printer for any SOHO’s looking for good quality black prints for documents, invoices etc.
May 07, 2021 21:51Includes 6-months free automatic delivery of toner, 1500 sheets per month. Easy setup. Fast wireless printing and flatbed scanning.
May 09, 2021 20:19Printers aren’t as essential of a PC accessory these days, but they still serve a purpose and have actually come a long way since the old inkjets that you’d find in most people’s homes. This HP LaserJet M234dwe is a fantastic budget multifunction laser printer for the masses. When you need to print or scan a document it’s very convenient to have the ability to do it at home and not have to find a place to print your documents, so that’s why I’ve always opted to have a printer around, even if seldom used.
This HP LaserJet has a scanner built into it, ethernet and wireless connectivity and it comes in a tiny package that doesn’t take up much more room than an inkjet printer. The advantages of this being a laser printer are numerous. Your prints come out without any smearing, instantly and toner lasts much longer than ink, especially when not being used. Toner doesn’t just dry up as many inkjet cartridges do. The only disadvantage to this HP LaserJet is that it’s limited to black and white printing. This wasn’t a concern for me as if I want to print out photos I’d go somewhere else to have them printed.
The setup process for this printer was a bit different as I ended up doing most of it on my phone through the HP Smart app. The instructions were easy to follow and the app guides you through everything. You also end up getting 6 months of free toner, which really means signing up for HP’s toner replacement program which monitors your usage and bills you for the toner they send out. As a matter of fact I already received notification that a new toner cartridge is on the way. Their pricing model seems fair and let’s you adjust it to suit your printing needs. We don’t print a lot at home, but it’s nice to have the option to be billed on a monthly basis instead of spending a lot at one time for a replacement toner. You always have the option of not enrolling in the program and just buying your toner the old school way as well, so don’t let that deter you.
Printing is pretty straight forward. Windows 10 will detect the HP LaserJet M243 once it’s on the network and install the HP Smart app for you. It’s really a no brainer, unless you want to scan wirelessly as well. This does require you to sign up for an HP account as the scanning actually takes place in the cloud and not locally. You also have the option to be able to print from anywhere, which may be convenient for some and works well, but I turned off this feature. Scanning worked well and I didn’t notice anything different than when I was scanning locally on a separate scanner that I owned.
So here’s the breakdown of the pros and cons of the HP LaserJet M234dwe.
Pros:
Small footprint
Easy setup
Prints most documents instantly
Easy to use
HP+ Toner program might entice some users (6 months free toner)
Scanning was crisp and clear
Printing was clear and sharp
Cons:
HP+ program may discourage others who may not realize they don’t need to enroll
Scanning wireless is a little different and requires an HP account
Overall I really liked the ease of use, setup and quality of this HP LaserJet M234dwe. I really wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this to anyone looking for a capable laser printer for a home or small office.

Jun 29, 2020 21:34the less expensive HP laser printer with superb color quality
Oct 29, 2021 19:01Good, medium duty color laser printer for home. A little noisy, but not a problem in my particular installation. Pleased with my purchase.
Jul 09, 2021 18:48There was some challenges getting it setup initially and it is a little bit loud when printing
Jul 09, 2020 21:53We are both at time working from home so to have this printer/scanner multifunctional all in one is great!
Mar 02, 2021 08:37Great product. Excellent service! Pretty easy setup for getting printer up and running.
Dec 17, 2020 11:47This was recommended by a staff member. It met and exceeded our needs and expectations. Perfect for working from home during Shelter in Place.
Apr 10, 2020 19:09This printer serves the purpose. It’s lost the network and become a pita, but it’s working now. I rate it as ok. At lesat this printer won’t dry out.
Jul 10, 2020 16:11Print professional-quality documents with this HP LaserJet Pro printer. Send documents from a mobile device via AirPrint, ePrint, Wi-Fi Direct or Google CloudPrint 2.0, and they're automatically resized for printing. JetIntelligence toner cartridges in this HP Laser JetPro printer provide clear, sharp graphics and text, and the auto on/off feature saves energy.
Works great. The wi-fi does not work very far from router. Would not work couple rooms away in this small house. But works in same room without connections. Also had to hook up with provided usb cable to computer to initialize.
Apr 24, 2020 15:44Ordered several of these for our home remote users that have to print NOT a lot. Works great. Only thing is NOE a separate Toner and Drum
Jan 24, 2018 15:01This is an excellent compact laser printer! I returned a larger color MFC that had all kinds of whistles and bells, but ended up being a disappointment. If you only need a monochrome printer, this is the machine to have. I use another machine for copying and scanning as needed.
Apr 07, 2017 15:58Nothing can replace the workhorse predecessor of this printer but I'm happy with it so far.
Apr 27, 2018 17:18We use this printer in our lobby and it is used often. HP offers great web features and monitoring tools.
Jun 01, 2018 15:06Fast printing. So far it's reliable. Was looking for an affordable laser jet printer and this printer is a good solution.
Dec 01, 2017 20:09Great value, but directions to change the toner are sadly lacking.
Sep 06, 2019 15:51It is perfect for my grandson. I don't think he has put it down, only to sleep and go to school.
Jan 14, 2018 10:36With fast print speeds, precision two-sided printing, scan/copy, plus an auto document feeder, the HP LaserJet MFP M234sdwe is perfect for small businesses printing black & white forms, reports and business documents. It includes the HP+ Smart Printing System that keeps itself up to date, secure, and ready to print from virtually anywhere at any time. As part of the connected HP+ system, this printer only works with Original HP Toner and requires an HP account and internet connection.
We’re printing from home a lot more now due to so many people working from home because of the pandemic. Even as Covid fades over time (or not?), most predictions are that more people than ever will continue to work from home in the future now that we know it can work for a certain percentage of people. You need a good printer for that, and the HP - LaserJet M234sdwe may suit the needs of many of these people. It’s important right off the bat though, to remember that this is more of a business class printer. It’s a black and white laser printer – no color, and while you can print out b/w family project and kid’s worksheet type of things on it, it works best for business purposes.
This is a fairly compact machine at around 14.5 x 16.5 x just over 17 inches in size, and 16 pounds. It offers a paper feeder capable of feeding up to 40 sheets on top, and a scanner bed via lifting the lid. I set it up using the Windows 10 app on my desktop using an ethernet cable connected from the printer to the router directly. You can also use it on 2.4 ghz or 5 ghz wifi systems, and I tested that out, too. It worked fine (though slightly slower) using that route, and was a little more sluggish on the 5 ghz router. There is a traditional USB port on here, but it’s covered by a label you have to remove, and if using it this way connected directly to a computer, you still have to have internet connectivity for it to function correctly. The “HP Smart” app set up pretty quickly after some registration rigamaroo and red tape, and once working, you are presented with a home screen so you can do a variety of things like print, scan, copy, print a photo (in b/w again, though), print project pages, and use a mobile fax feature. The app (computer or phone) is pretty much the only real way to do most of these things as the printer does not have a traditional color touch screen on it – only a small digital screen on the paper tray cover that allows only very basic functions. After getting up and running on the computer, I installed the app on an iPhone where it looked much like the Windows app, and functioned in a similar way, connecting via Bluetooth mainly to do it’s thing.
Printing documents directly from the app only works with PDFs when it searches for docs, but if you use the print function directly from applications (like Word, etc) then you can print their own documents from those programs. Prints are very clear. Scans are also very clear. Using the Mobile Fax feature is unfortunately a bit cumbersome, requiring you to add docs or scan them while entering a fax number, adding a digital cover sheet, and sending… it just seemed to be too many steps and I would prefer the “old fashioned” way of just having a port in the back and a keypad on the machine itself to do this (yes, some businesses still do use faxes).
HP offers a service called “HP +” with this and should you choose to take advantage of it, it will extend your warranty to two years, give you free replacement toner for six months, and monitor your toner use and send you a new toner when you need it. You pay depending on how many pages you will print per month with prices ranging from $1.99 per month for 50 pages, up to $25.99 per month for 1,500 pages, and several price points in-between. Families I think will get by with the lowest amount or perhaps $3.99 for 100 pages per month, while a small business or home business the larger amount or somewhere in the mid-range of $13.99 per month for 400 pages. The more you print the more you save, but you can forego this if desired and just buy toner cartridges outright, which average (give or take) roughly around $50.00 for regular yield and around $80.00 for high yield. You MUST use genuine HP toners in this machine.
One problem… A reoccurring issue I had is that at night I’ll turn the printer and my computer off. The next day, upon booting everything up, the M234sdwe will not print directly from applications. I have had to run a diagnostic tool through a series of fixes to get it to print. After these are complete, then it will run perfectly for the entire day; until I turn it off again and upon restarting the next day, it will again refuse to print and I have to again, run the diagnostic tool. The tool will not fix it permanently. Turns out it’s some kind of an IP communication error between the computer and printer which requires some configuring in your control panel to get it working, until Microsoft updates fixes the issue. Long story short – you MAY have to resort to HP forums or help to get this working, depending on the machine you’re using it on, updates, etc.
Overall the HP M234sdwe produces excellent prints, is reasonably fast, and isn’t super loud when in use. It’s compact enough to fit in most areas. It does offer many features you would need for home or small office use, but a few of them are clunky to use (such as faxing). No SD memory card or USB input slots limit input options, and the total lack of a color touch screen really does limit the convenience of using some functions outside of having to use your computer or an app on your phone. I’m old fashioned – I do consider the lack of a true touch screen control panel a big minus for this machine. Having to do a considerable amount of Windows/IP configuring to get it to work correctly was also a hassle, though again, this may be more of a Windows issue rather than the printer.
I recommend the M234sdwe with a few reservations. Just realize the features (screen, etc) you are not getting, and if you can live with that, it’s print results should satisfy you. If not, HP offers similar models WITH screens and more, to opt to.
Apr 30, 2021 22:27PROs:
- Capable/speedy (<5 sec/pg text, <8 sec/pg heavy graphics) networked multi-function, duplex-capable printer that you can legitimately set up anywhere in your home/office without a connected PC nearby--ideal if you want to put your printer in a central location for multiple users
- Text quality & line-art are razor-sharp; B&W images show minor stippling in dense/complex areas, but large patches of black backgrounds are smooth & uniform without signs of banding/fade
- Comes almost fully pre-assembled w/toner cartridge installed; just need to remove shipping tape & snap the paper tray into place. The HP Smart App (PC or phone/tablet) sets up the printer on your network & guides the user through final assembly, paper loading & initial configuration w/virtually idiot-proof graphics/guides--I was online and printing inside of 6 minutes
- Wireless setup & operation were effortless/seamless, but there are Ethernet & USB ports to give you other hookup options to match your use case--though the printer must still be connected to the Internet due to HP+ functionality
- Touch-panel buttons on the paper tray lid offer rudimentary copy controls--you can adjust number of copies, darkness/lightness, reduce (down to 25%), or enlarge (up to 400%). There's an ID Copy button which allows you to take a 2-sided ID/other small 2-sided item, scan the front side on the flatbed glass, then flip it over elsewhere on the glass, then print out a single page showing both sides of the ID. There are also buttons to turn wireless on/off, cancel the current print job, and resume in case the print job was interrupted/needs user intervention
- Comes with HP+ which automatically adds an extra year to the printer's warranty; but the primary draw is likely the Instant Ink program with monthly pricing plans after a 6-month free trial that varies from $1.99 to $19.99 depending on projected usage. This program takes the effort/legwork out of toner purchasing--shipments are dispatched automatically based on page output (rather than time) and you can rollover a large portion of unused pages if you go through a printing dry spell. If you have a good sense of how much you normally print & generally fall on the low or high side of those equations, these Instant Ink plans probably make financial sense vs. sporadically buying genuine HP toner cartridges, especially if you routinely burn through a lot of pricier high-yield cartridges, or hate shopping for toner at all
- Fair sized ADF holds 40 sheets for larger scanning/copy jobs; paper tray holds 150 sheets of plain paper--not huge, but probably enough for a typical family, student, or even light-office duty
- HP Smart app includes multiple utilities & options for viewing/managing supply levels; scanner settings (document feeder or glass, paper size, resolution, color/BW, image enhancements, auto-heal for marks/hole punches, & orientation correction); setting up workflow shortcuts (ex: automatically send a copy to e-mail, save a scanned document to Google/Dropbox, etc.); creating free "printables" for arts, crafts, & school projects; printing documents; using HP's mobile fax service to turn your LaserJet into a bonafide fax machine (a 2-year trial for this feature is included with the printer); printing photos (though I'm not sure why you'd want to with a B&W laser); and adjust multiple printer/admin settings (more on that one later)
- You can also use the HP Smart App's Print-from-Anywhere feature to send images and documents to print from a tablet or smart phone; there's even an option for private pickup so that the print job won't begin unless the printer senses you are within Bluetooth proximity
- 300 DPI optical resolution from the auto-document feeder, but 600 DPI optical from the flatbed scanner glass--this matches the maximum output quality of the printer itself so your scanned files/images are never unnecessarily larger than what the printer is capable of reproducing
- Multiple save formats allow you to capture scanned items as a Basic PDF, Searchable PDF, image file (.JPG), Word document (.docx) or Plain Text (.txt)
CONs:
- Automatic duplexing is limited to PRINTING from a PC or the HP Smart app. The auto-document feeder can NOT auto-duplex your source documents for 2-sided scanning or copying; and even if you were willing to feed/scan your documents one page at a time through the ADF or flatbed glass to produce a 2-sided document, there is no button on the printer itself to change the copy settings from 1-sided to 2-sided output--you have to go spelunking into the printer's Advanced Settings pages to change this option for the default copy settings--which can be an irritating hassle to say the least (more just below)
- Many printer status reports and displays are available in the more user-friendly HP Smart app's "Printer Settings" sub-menus; however, to make any changes of consequence (print quality, network settings, admin functions, fuser and cartridge cleaning, alignment adjustments, default copy settings like 1-sided-original-to-2-sided output, etc.), you have to head into the "Advanced Settings" sub-menu. This set of pages is not as user friendly as the main app; there are no graphics or tile buttons to press & the menus can be almost intimidatingly dense. Many of these options/displays seem more clearly geared towards IT-savvy users/IT professionals than a typical home user. However, in order to access most of this information or make any adjustments, the user is prompted to enter an account name and password from a Windows pop-up security dialog. This is not the user's Windows credentials, but an admin account password that is printed on a label INSIDE the printer (marked in the attached photo w/the blue arrow); so in order to retrieve that information, you have to lift open the top of the printer and read the tiny label affixed to the frame. This was the same experience we had with another HP+ inkjet, so it seems this is the direction HP has gone to help make your printing environment more secure from tampering/inadvertent adjustments. Fortunately, you can change the admin password, or even delete it entirely, by going to HP Smart's Printer Settings>Settings>Advanced Settings>System>Administration, but you still have to know that you need to crack open the printer to retrieve the credentials initially, and then be comfortable/astute enough with the more advanced & convoluted printer menus & controls to affect those changes
- Although the maximum optical scanner DPI matches the maximum output printing DPI, a more capable scanner with at least 1200x1200 DPI would have been appreciated to make higher-quality/archival scans--especially of photos or graphic-intensive items that you might want to send to another printer that didn't have a built-in scanner of its own. I believe this limitation slightly reduces the value proposition of the MFP because you'll want/need a better scanner if you intend to work with photos or graphical products at higher resolution/quality settings
- It appears you can only scan & save a document/image separately using the HP Smart app; none of my Windows apps & programs with integrated "Import from Scanner" functionality recognized the MFP as an available scanning device. This may not be a huge deal as this printer isn't really designed to provide high-quality scans for image editing or digital content creation, but it adds some additional steps to otherwise streamlined scanning workflows you might be used to
- There are options under advanced printer settings for low-power sleep & auto-shutdown; however, because the printer is networked, the auto-shutdown feature appears to be disabled--meaning the LEDs on the front panel are lit at all times unless you physically turn off the printer by the main switch. I'm not 100% sure if this would be the case if you hooked up the printer via Ethernet or USB, but I imagine given this printer's feature-set that most people would connect via WiFi. If you have your printer located in the same room where you sleep, these LEDs are bright enough that they may become intrusive
- Although the printer is relatively compact, if you are pressed for space, or have your printer near the edge of a desk/table for convenience, you'll need to account for the paper tray which adds a good 5 inches to the footprint straight out the front. Personally, I would have preferred if the printer were a bit taller to accommodate a paper tray underneath & the controls moved to the top/ADF to keep the footprint even smaller
- Some issues above (auto shut-down, Windows scanner detection, etc.) might be resolved by also connecting the printer via USB; however, as of this writing, HP does not yet seem to have posted drivers for the M234sdwe on its support site--or at least, I haven't been able to pull up any drivers despite a week's worth of trying
Bottom line:
This budget-oriented, duplex-capable LaserJet performs well & has many nice/convenient features that seem suited to typical family, student, or light-duty office work. The economics of the HP+ Instant Ink program may not appeal to everyone, but you get a free 6-month trial to see if it would be worth it (or if your plan should change before you have to pay for it) given your printing habits. You can also cancel the plan & simply buy toner on your own if you prefer; but you do get a free initial toner shipment regardless! The lack of duplexing for source documents, or on-the-fly adjustments to accommodate 1-sided source to 2-sided printing given this limitation, is definitely disappointing; the scanner's optical DPI limitations also somewhat reduce the M234sdwe's utility as a true MFP. If you like your printers smart, connected, but hands-off, the added convenience of the HP+ wireless features may be attractive. However, HP+ also introduces some additional complexity, cost & overhead into configuration, management & operation that may rub some people the wrong way.
Apr 29, 2021 15:11I don't print nearly as much as used to and much of what I print I capture on my phone or tablet. This printer has 2 quite unique features. The first starts with HP Smart+ app, for Windows, iOS or Android. It looks the same on all 3 platforms. It allows you to select documents from various cloud providers (Local device, Google Drive, DropBox, Google Photos, Box, Evernote, Office 365, Facebook and networked devices (and this list is likely to grow)). I keep many of my archived documents on a SAN Array or on my Google drive. This app allows me to directly print to my HP networked printer from anywhere to the printer. I'll likely use it from home 99% of the time, but I'm still grabbing and printing from a cloud source. I recall just a few years ago thing how hard it was to print from my iPhone. Now so simple, and FAST (30p/min single sided, 19p/min double sided. And the output quality is extremely crisp, easy to read. Ok, now my biggest gripe - the printers paper tray only holds 40 pages... I recall when 120 pages seemed small. Minus a star, for a printer this fast 40 pages is just to small.
The other new HP feature is Instant Ink, you estimate how many pages you will print a month and HP will send you new cartridges at no charge, you pay a monthly fee as low as $0.99/mo. I figure a new laser cartridge is about $100, looking at the various plans and utilizations, I'll end up getting a new Cartridge after I've paid then $60-$75 (and returned my previous cartridge to them at no cost). So it's going to keep laser cartridges out of landfills. So depending on my usage, which varies pretty significantly. HP can monitor remotely and suggest shipment, or via their app you can request another. And you can change subscription plans at any time (i'm sure their monitoring will offer appropriate suggestions) I'll soon see. But it looks like a reasonable deal - and Green.
With in the Smart app you can also send a Fax from your phone, don't know how often this will be useful, and you can use your smartphone camera to capture a "scanned document", this seems to create a PDF file rather than a .jpg image. Their are some other organizational features I've not spent much time exploring. Hp ties all of this to your online account them, given I have several HP notebooks this was very easy to get up and running.
Setup of the printer was guided by the smart app; have to say it was trivial, I setup wi-fi (supports 2.4 & 5gb) and then ethernet only to find that only one or the other could be enabled at the same time. This I don't understand. But once set up you can open the printer from your local browser to also handle it's management. This was not discussed anywhere I found, but I set up many networked devices, and it seemed intuitive. I have to say there is a wealth of information they provide, and they handle securing this quite well.
Given the size, speed and quality of output of this printer it's a great value, add in the Smart App and you really know some people at HP are thinking ahead, what and where do people want to print from. We'll see how the Instant ink works out, at $1/mo, if I printed the minimum it would be 8+ yrs and I'd still break even. So it's a fair value no matter what. Except for the tiny paper tray I really can't find anything else I don't like.
Apr 22, 2021 20:13REVIEW: HP - LASERJET M234SDWE WIRELESS BLACK-AND-WHITE LASER PRINTER WITH 6 MONTHS OF TONER THROUGH HP+ - WHITE & SLATE
VALUE FOCUSED – HOME / SMALL OFFICE / PRINTER + SCANNER
There is a lot to like about the M234SDWE Multi-Function- Printer (MFP). Duplex (2 sided) Printing, Low Cost of Investment. Good Print Quality and Print Speed. Scanning and Copying is passible.
This is targeted and appropriate for a small home business where you just need a little of everything (printing, scanning, copying). As a value printer, it does a good enough job at all of these things.
Default Scanning and Printing from the Automatic Document Feeder (300 DPI - ADF) results in typical crooked pages from budget MFPs. However, if you download and use the full version of the HP SCANNER software it has an auto correct feature that fixes that issue on most scans.
Flat Bed Scanning - 600 Dots Per Inch (DPI) is pretty good even in color (see picture).
PRO’s
- Compact Design, takes up about 40% less space than my 10 year old HP MFP
- Good Scanning
- Good Printing
- Includes a wired LAN port (not just WIFI).
- USB port that can be used after the setup is complete.
HP “E” PRINTERS (AKA HP+)
If you get the “E” version of HP printers you are paying about 25% less than the Non E version but the tradeoff is that you must have an online account and are prevented from using generic toner. Further, it is also required that your printer must have access to the internet in order to print. If this bothers you then don’t get the “E” printers. As long as the HP toner is somewhat affordable then I’m OK with this. I use about 1 cartridge a year. It looks like 2500 page cartridges are about $80. This is OK for me as long as I can get a year or two out of them.
When you create your online account and register your printer your warranty is doubled to 2 years.
This is different, but complimentary to the Instant Ink Program where you agree to pay HP a fixed amount each month (starting at $1.99) and they will automatically send you a new toner cartridge when you need it. You will have to crunch the numbers for yourself if Instant ink makes sense for you. I find it useful at the low end of print volumes and the high end of print volumes. If you have a widely variable amount of printing each month, then be aware that this is a like an old-fashioned cell phone plan with penalties for going over your allotted page count (starting at 10 cents per page) and it even has “roll over pages” where some fraction of your unused pages can roll over to the next month. For me life is too short and complicated already without having to worry about keeping track of how many pages I have left to print each month. On the other hand, having toner just show up when needed is very convenient.
Is HP+ worth it? If you tend to only use HP Brand cartridges, sure, why not save a little money on your purchase. The double warranty is nice, but to be honest in 30 years using HP printers, I’ve never had one fail other than normal consumables.
SCANNING
You get 300 DPI from the ADF and 600 DPI from the flatbed scanner.
As I mentioned with most budget MFP’s the pages are slightly crooked when scanned with the ADF. Download and use the full version of the software (HP SCAN) to select autocorrect and access more advanced features.
NOTE: THERE IS NO 2 SIDED (duplex) SCANNING: Even though this prints on both sides it does not scan or copy on both sides.
Even with the full version of HP SCAN, it says “Manual 2 sided scanning” but it is misleading (or maybe broken).
Imagine your all you front pages are odd page numbers and all your back pages are even numbers. Now, when you trigger manual 2 sided scanning you would expect when the process is over to get your pages in the correct order. Instead of 1,2,3,4,5,6 you get 1,3,5,2,4,6 which is completely useless and the same as back to back 1 sided scanning. Why even have that as an option?
PRINTING
Fast but a little loud for such a small printer. The print quality is good. The stated resolution for printing is 600x600 DPI, and that looks about right.
The paper tray is on the small side, so be prepared to keep feeding the printer if you do a lot of printing.
SETUP
I initially tried to set up the M234SDWE with a physical LAN cable (instead of wireless) but it was problematic. Instead, my suggestion is to use the Wireless setup and then plug in the LAN cable after everything else is all set.
TIP: For the last setup step, I could not get it to print anything and it kept giving me an error “action needed” while things piled up in the printer queue. When I went into the various HP apps it said everything was fine. In the end all it was waiting for was for me to press the “i" button on the printer, but it never told me that, or if it did, then I missed it.
I would strongly suggest you also download and install the full software suite from the HP support site, it gives you much more control over the printing and scanning process using HP SCANNER software instead of HP SMART software. It also includes OCR software for converting scanned images to text.
I do miss a more complete control panel display but at this price point I understand the trade off.
SUMMARY / CONCLUSION / RECOMMENDATION
You get a lot of printer for the price. If you are a heavy scanner user, then I might suggest moving a few models up that also have duplex scanning and support scan to email (which the M234SDWE) without being connected to a PC. If your primary use is printing, then this is a good bet as a printer, especially with the 2 sided printing.
As to HP+ (reduced price for a requirement to be online and only use HP Toner), I’m mostly on board as long as the toner stays affordable. So really you have to do the math on this yourself. Each Toner Cartridge for the M234SDWE is about $80 and is rated at 2500 pages.
Overall, I recommend this printer for the value conscious user.
Apr 27, 2021 10:55Pretty standard Laser office printer with a few nice perks. I can see that HP is clearly setting up a more streamlined process of owning a printer. It comes with a toner replenishment service and support you can actual reach someone on. It is pretty quiet when operating and the setup was pretty simple if you have a smart device. Also if you need to print in a busy home you can have the prints stay in memory till you go to the machine and open the HP app to release them. Great feature since you can print from anywhere and release your prints when you say get home or near the machine.
Pros:
1: Crisp printing/scanning
2: Copies/prints 2 sided
3: Has Reliable dual band wireless connectivity
4: Includes better than standard warranty
5: Private printing (Meaning you can print from the app and your prints will not come out till your at the machine)
Cons:
1: Only Monochrome
2: Printer interface is sluggish when using via the mobile device to print.
3: For a business/home office all in one the scanning requires a mobile or windows device. Would be better if you could hit scan to email from the machine.
Overall, I would purchase again for the needs of limited printing office printer/scanner. I just wish I did not have to use the Windows or IOS app to scan documents which cuts down on my work flow vs copiers with a display for direct scanning. Also it does mobile Efaxing but I did not actually have anyone to fax to since that seems like a dying technology. I think for the small home office/ smb desk printer need that this is a great move in the right direction but takes some steps backward in an effort to bring the interface to your mobile phone.
Apr 23, 2021 15:23HP - LaserJet M234sdwe Wireless Black-and-White Laser Printer with 6 months of Toner through HP+ - White & Slate
I’ve used HP LaserJet printers for over 30 years. They are a proven brand and the evolution of the printers has resulted in simpler designs, more features, simplified setups and efforts to save you money on supplies. You’ve got to give HP kudos for effort. My experience with this newest iteration suggests they ought to be given credit for execution, too. It’s important to understand that the HP+ toner replacement plans are great for the right user profile, and not the best idea for others. For some users, simply buying HP toner cartridges (high yield versions!!) makes more sense. In any event, be advised up front that HP is locking users into HP toner replacement.
This model was very easy to SETUP. The App based instructions were quick, reliable, and I was printing in under 10 minutes of fuss-free checking of boxes, entering account information, and selecting my HP+ plan (or rejecting the plan in favor of buying toner cartridges as always). There is no obstacle to choosing either the HP+ plan approach to acquiring toner or to choosing to buy your HP toner at your local store. Well, the one catch? HP has technically locked this printer to HP … only … toner.
This printer offers:
+ Laser printing
+ scan/copy
+ auto document feeder
+ HP+ (6 months of free ink, etc)
+ (extended) 2 year warrantee (with any HP+ plan)
+ a small printer footprint
HP+ printing plans …. or not.
HP+ is primarily about “Instant Ink”. When you purchase your printer you can add a subscription for replacement ink. The printer, using its Internet connection, calls for a re-supply of ink cartridges depending on how many pages you print each month. It’s important to understand, especially for those of you new to printing from home, that the most significant cost is printing supplies. Ink pretty quickly costs you more than the printer.
If one of these toner plans works for you, and you have a consistent pattern of use, there ought to be ongoing measurable savings even after the first 6 months of free ink. I did my own calculations lower down on this review.
$1.99/50pgs/mo
$3.99/100pgs/mo
$13.99/400/pgs/mo
$19.99/800pgs/mo
$25.99/1500/mo
Printing more pages/per month (10-50) costs an added $1 for up to 50 added pages.
Printing less pages/per month and you can roll forward 2x the pages in your plan.
Your savings can be quite good, but you do need to anticipate your printing demands. As my calculations below suggest, higher use results in very nice savings.
With these printers, HP will lock users out of using non-HP cartridges. However, if you prefer NOT to subscribe to HP+, you can purchase an “original” HP toner cartridge after the free trial period and print outside of the subscription program. These cartridge prices are pretty standard, but there is no way to use 3rd party cartridges.
HP 134A Original Black LaserJet Toner Cartridge, W1340A (1100) 48.99
HP 134X Original Black LaserJet Toner Cartridge, W1340X (2400) 79.99 .033/page (High Yield)
Sign up benefits and bonuses favor the HP+ program. I’ve ignored them for my calculations (because they were tricky to monetize accurately), but they add to the value of the program (and probably compensate for the low use plans’ higher expenses).
So, the math looks like this to me if I’m understanding the program:
After 3 years on the $4/month/100pgs HP+ plan = 3600 pages you’ll pay $144. BUT, …
After 3 years of buying toner, 3600 pages would require 1.5 (High Yield) toner cartridges for $120. (those smaller toner cartridges would amount to 3.3 cartridges x $49 or $162. High Yield cartridges always represent a better value.
Low use plans make less sense, and random, unpredictable usage patterns also make little sense for the HP+ plan, although those sign-up freebies may even the score.
After 3 years on the $20/month/800pgs plan = 28,800 pages are printed over 36 months and I would pay $720 for the plan. And, of course the sign-up freebies add to the savings.
After 3 years of buying toner, for 28,800 pages, I’d need 12 (High Yield) cartridges and would have paid $960. HP won't encourage you with freebies if you take this path.
Even greater printing activity results in greater savings for the HP+ plan vs. buying cartridges. You need to do some math and estimate usage to see which approach works for you.
SUMMARY:
I like this HP+ printer quite a bit. IF YOU have predictable, ongoing, and somewhat significant printing activities it’s hard to argue against the HP+ plans. They require no planning, no worrying about running out of supplies or running over to a store to replenish the toner which always runs out on the most critical project. End users with a more limited demand for a laser printer, or more random use pattern are probably better off getting a version of HP’s LaserJet that does not include the HP+ offer.
Apr 21, 2021 13:33Ah printers, the one computer hardware that is feared, loathed, and dreaded by computer techies, myself included. While it has improved a lot over the years since the old days, say Windows 95 or Windows XP, it is still one of the bigger pains of dealing with when something goes wrong.
The HP LaserJet M234sdwe is a multifunction printer that can handle, obviously, printing as well as scanning and copying. While a lot of people may not use the scanner or copying function of this printer, it is there should you do need it. Therein lies the conundrum of what you need versus what can it do. If all you need is a printer and nothing else, obviously there are other options out there that can save you a few bucks. However, if you’re like me, then you view it with utility in mind. After all, there may be a case where you do need to make a copy or scan something in.
Okay, simply put, it’s a black and white printer. Yes, no color. I have opted in to getting this unit for review for one simple reason: I very rarely print in color. While printing in color is nice, color laser printers come with a drawback. Colors will not be as vibrant as those printed on inkjet. This makes printing photos less than ideal on laser printers. The only reason one would get a color laser printer is simply for printing documents and nothing else.
As a minor note, ensure that you have an AC outlet with ground. Due to the structure of my residence, I had to improvise to provide power to the printer. But if you’re good to go with that, then ignore this note.
Setup is easy, but strange at the same time. Instead of connecting the printer via USB, which this printer lacks a cable for, I have chosen to connect it to the network using an ethernet cable, despite that it’s capable of wireless connectivity. But getting it recognized in Windows will likely be the same regardless. On a laptop that has the latest update of Windows 10 installed, it wants to use the HP Smart app to set up and control the printer.
Full utilization of the app will need an HP account. But for basic functionality of printing documents, this app can be ignored for the most part. The app is what you would expect, which supports what the printer can do. You can print PDF files directly from this app but most people would be viewing these files from other programs instead. Scanning is supported through this app and contains most of the basic functionality of it. It can scan in color and the quality is pretty good on a simple sample I used. The app also provides some basic information about the printer. It works the best while the printer is on (whether on standby or in power saving) so it’s not very useful for those who are conscious about power consumption.
The printer comes with an online system called HP+, which is intended to either enhance or extend some abilities of the printer itself. Things such as cloud printing are done using this system. There are also a couple of subscription services that come as part of the HP+ system package, but are not required to really use it. They are “Smart App Advance” and “Instant Ink,” the latter of which I am completely against as a concept. Whatever the opinion I have with it as a whole, there is one good thing about it. HP+ adds one additional year of warranty to your printer instead of the basic one year it comes with. So you get a total of 2 years of warranty which is a nice bonus to have, and a good incentive to at least sign up for it temporarily. In the end, HP+ isn’t required to use the printer at all. Now let’s see how the printer performs and works.
Print quality is as what you expect from a laser printer. But this is the first set of prints to come out. So it is expected to be sharp and crisp in printing texts. It is also capable of printing on both sides of the paper to save on paper usage. This is great for printing normal documents. But if I’m printing something more sensitive, I would prefer printing on a more heavier or thicker sheet of paper so the text doesn’t easily show through under light.
Creating copies can be done in two ways, using the scanner bed or through the auto-feed tray at the top. Both created perfect copies as you’d expect and I ran into no issue doing this. If I need to make copies of documents that have really bad fold creases, I would use the scanner bed. Otherwise, the auto-feed tray at the top is good enough for it.
Scanning a document is okay. It can only scan up to 600dpi but this will be fine for most people. Those seeking higher scanning resolution will need a dedicated flatbed scanner for that and is out of the market scope of what this multifunction printer is for. It can scan in color or black/white and the image quality is nice. I do have one small complaint on its scanning functionality but that is probably an issue with the HP Smart app itself. Saving a scan can only be saved in one of two formats -- PDF or JPG, both of which provide image compression of some kind but at a loss of image quality. I would prefer that it either supports BMP or PNG as an image format to preserve every bit of image quality possible. This creates a large image file itself, but gives you peace of mind that no detail is lost, no matter how small or insignificant it may be.
As a networked printer, I try to seek out how to really fine tune how the printer operates. And there is an internal webhost for the printer itself. The only thing you need is to figure out the IP address of the printer. Then you enter that IP address to your web browser to start browsing through its internal settings. It does require a password, which is printed on a label inside the printer where you access the toner. To access that, lift up the top just below the scanner. It’s highly advisable to change the password to something unique and complex. Like anything that is connected to the internet, there is always a danger and risk of malicious users trying to break in and do bad things.
With limited time, there’s no way to formulate an opinion on “Instant Ink” -- a long term feature that is an optional part of HP+. But the concept of this feature is bad from the very start. Instant Ink is a subscription-based service that provides you with toner or ink replenishment when either is low for a monthly fee. Limiting this further is how many prints you can make on a per month basis. The lowest tier plan limits to 50 pages per month going all the way to a maximum of 1500 pages per month. This may be okay for people who do a lot of photo prints on inkjet printers. But I don’t think this is good for laser printer users. Alternatively, people on inkjet printers who do a lot of photo printing are likely not going to be using mainstream printers but instead look into models or competitors that don’t utilize ink cartridges. Overall I believe Instant Ink is a bad service to enroll in. It’s fine to use it during your trial period but it’s highly recommended to cancel the plan before you’re billed.
As a multifunction laser printer, it gets the job done. There’s little time to say as to whether this is a good printer in the long run. Functionally, one can get similar capabilities by going one model down, which omits the top auto-feed copying tray. Spending the extra money on this model doesn’t seem to make much sense if you’re in need of a multifunction printer. On the flip side, if you need to make a lot of document copies, then perhaps this will be worth the added cost. Regardless, it’ll either be for you or not. It heavily depends on your use case scenario. Thus, I cannot say with absolute certainty to recommend it. And to err on the side of caution, I cannot recommend it to friends either.
Apr 26, 2021 18:26I’ve always liked HP printers and have had a number of them over the years. This HP Laserjet M234sdwe printer will be the first one I’ve had where I signed up for the HP Instant Ink program. This requires providing a credit card for billing and I selected the $1.99/50 pages per month option. The next plan up will add another 50 pages for another $2.00 and so on. An individual’s printing requirements will really determine whether it makes sense after the six months of free toner to continue with the Instant Ink program or to acquire HP toner cartridges on one’s own. Many users that have Instant Ink enjoy the convenience of automatically receiving replacement ink/toner as needed with no real effort on their part.
Set-up and installation of the printer was easy. The HP Smart app is user friendly and makes printing, scanning and sharing of the printer across multiple devices quite easy. I especially like the ability to print and scan from mobile devices.
The printer control panel has: a wireless button to turn wireless capability on or off, a copy button, ID card button to start the process of copying a two-sided ID card or similar, information button light to print a summary of printer settings and status, cancel button and power button. The copy ID card button will be handy for businesses that want a quick, easy way to copy both sides of an ID card onto one side of paper.
The control panel display is pretty limited to showing a wireless icon, ethernet icon, wi-fi direct icon, character display (number of pages being printed or copied, animation showing device is busy or error/status codes), reduce/enlarge scale icon, lighter/darker contrast icon and number of copies icon. For most routine, small business printing I think these capabilities are adequate, but some may like the idea of having a larger, more useful control display.
The hardware aspect of the printer itself is generally what we are used to from HP. The 40 page automatic document feeder works well; as does the scanning bed and duplex printing features. I don’t particularly care for the design of the paper tray which makes it kind of tough to access the paper guides that one needs to adjust for size when printing on envelopes or labels. The footprint of this laser printer is minimal at under 17” wide.
For those not requiring color printing I’d say this laser printer is a good value for the functionality it offers. The print quality has been quite good and the speed of printing and copying is great. I had one issue printing a proof of insurance card for my car which would not format correctly. However, the same document printed just fine on my HP Officejet. I’ll have to see what I think about the Instant Ink program over time. Part of me doesn’t like that I’m required to sign up for HP+ to get the extended, two year warranty, but I chose to do so given the positive feedback others have given to me about the convenience of Instant Ink.
May 03, 2021 15:08Print professional documents with this HP OfficeJet printer. Enhanced security features and built-in networking let you connect several computers wirelessly without compromising data, and four separate ink cartridge slots let you replace ink colors as they are used. This HP OfficeJet printer is Energy Star compliant to help save you money.
I purchased this printer as a replacement for an Office Jet Pro 8100 that unexpectedly quit. Unlike the Office Jet 8100 the 8210 set up faster and easier. I downloaded the software from HP and once downloaded followed the instructions to turn on printer and quickly the printer was set up on all devices and the internet. I particularly like the display on the printer as I can quickly review all functions of the printer and change settings as needed. I would have gave a five star rating for this printer but I have four nearly full cartridge's from the 8100 Office Jet that HP informs me will not work in this printer. I cannot understand why because the cartridges are identical to the ones in the 8210, with just a different cartridge number. Overall this printer deserves a five but unless I can use almost $100.00 of cartridges from the 8100 I won't give it a higher rating.
Apr 24, 2020 12:39When I bought the printer, my purchase included the setting up the printer. When Daniel arrived to connect the printer to the computer he said the two were not compatible and that he would not be able to set things up. The company removed that charge from my bill and for that I am most appreciative. However, I want you to know that my granddaughter connected the two and set it up so it was not impossible. My daughter has printed a number of things from her computer on the printer. Perhaps more training needs to be done in the Geek Squad.
Jan 01, 2021 18:51So I bought this printer after my Officejet 4632 crashed on me and could not fix it. I figured as this was a upgrade it would be better... Well at first it was great but after about 17 days it started to make noise as it was printing something. I had only used it 3-4 times and it was brand new!!! I took it back to Best Buy and they switched it out and gave me another new one. That was a little over a month ago now and no issues so hopefully it was continue to work. The lady at bestbuy said that these were not very good printers but I had never had an issue with my old one until it broke down. I used it often and it lasted like 4 years! So hopefully this one will do the same! 8/10 stars
Oct 19, 2021 19:18The 1st one received was defective. Was a MAJOR hassel getting a new one. NOW I'm getting spammed from the suposed Geek squad for money...
Jul 23, 2021 15:50Good HP printer. Has plenty of speed. Duplex printing works perfectly. Had a bit of trouble getting to the WiFi menu for set-up but figured it out. A touch screen like our Pro 8025 would be a nice upgrade.
Jan 22, 2021 17:05Although a good printer, not a great printer. I find the response time a bit lagging. Once it gets started, the quality is second to none. I previously own the 8100 office jet, in my opinion was a superior machine. The 8210 does have a quiet mode that I like.
Jul 12, 2019 20:43Works great and fast! A lot faster than my old HP. Quality is great for the price.
Oct 28, 2021 09:00This printer is perfect for us seniors. No fuss. East does it
And tge techs that came to our home couldn’t be nicer
Very professional. Showed us how everything worked
Set up the printer abd added to our house wireless network
Didn’t leave until they were sure everything worked and we understood how
May 07, 2021 15:33Make high-quality, eye-catching business materials with this HP OfficeJet Pro 6230 oj pro 6230 ePrinter, which features automatic 2-sided printing, so you can create vibrant duplex prints. The built-in Wi-Fi enables versatile mobile printing options.
The printer was easy to set up and easy to use. There are fewer individual ink shades to replace than my previous printer and it was cheaper to buy this new printer than it was to get a full ink replacement for the old printer. The wifi and email printing is great. Unfortunately, I cannot seem to figure out how to get it to turn itself on, or hold documents in queue, when I send something to it that I want printed. Also, it would be nice if the printed pages were deposited somewhere within the body of the printer. Because of pets and space, I cannot just leave the catch tray extended all the time. When I want to print wirelessly I still have to go to the printer, turn it on, and extend the tray.
Sep 02, 2015 18:21I'm sure this was a good printer, however I had to return it. I did not realize when I ordered it that it was an ePrinter and I needed a printer that would copy and scan. I've always had good luck with HP printers.
Oct 23, 2021 14:42It was a chore to get it set up on USB but it is working fine now that my son figured it out.
Oct 04, 2021 07:48My previous hp deskjet printer died after 8 years of moderate home use. I bought an hp deskjet and returned it because of poor type quality. I replaced it with this model-the Officejet Pro 6230, and am very pleased with its performance. It prints envelopes and postcard-sized items very well and without jamming. The print quality is excellent. The in-text images and charts look great.
The ink is expensive - about 40% more than my older model. I set the print to draft-black only for everyday use to stretch the ink a bit.
I recommend this for a quality printer for home use.
Mar 18, 2018 21:37I just started graduate school and having a printer at home is amazing. After reading the reviews I was more than willing to give this one a try and has worked great! It prints quickly and clean. What else can you ask for other than reliability? This printer has it!
Aug 19, 2015 07:30We actually have purchased this printer twice! It is great for the dorm room. The wifi and Bluetooth capabilities make it so easy for everyone to use the printer when needed. Our daughter liked it so much, we purchased this for our son to take to college as well.
Jan 14, 2015 19:06Great printer for the college bound child(ren), easy setup, good quality, nice that it has individual ink cartridges for those on a budget
Aug 22, 2015 08:31This printer works well, with no problems to speak of. Of course, I wish they didn't try to get me to buy HP ink cartridges every time I change cartridges, but I guess that's pretty standard procedure.
Apr 18, 2018 17:40Winning in business means working smarter. This HP Color LaserJet Pro M479fdn printer is designed to let you focus your time where it's most effective - growing your business and staying ahead of the competition
I have had to replace my printer 3 times and we are just now getting to understand just how it works and works with the system. Kathy and I ( She is a much better computer person than I ) had a couple of issues with this system but looks better as time moves forward.
Mar 14, 2021 10:36It's a good all in one printer and you can save $100 dollars compare with the other model that is wifi capable. Just connect it to your computer, download HP smart, then go to control panel, add the printer and share the printer in your network. Then connect it to the router and download HP Smart in your cellphone and other computers. But also you can make it wifi capable and get a wifi adapter and still you will save $50 dollars.
Aug 14, 2020 20:13Love this printer. It is great for business and is good quality.
Oct 04, 2021 08:57I used to have a black/white laser and then a color ink jet. The toner cartridge is a little pricey, but having it all in one unit is amazing. Would absolutely purchase again.
Jan 29, 2021 15:56I decided to go from a inkjet to a laser printer and so glad I did!
This printer is fantastic and wish I would have purchased this type of printer along time ago.
Jun 12, 2020 18:39Fast printer! Very accurate colors. 3 in 1 features! Good for home set up.
Nov 04, 2020 16:12It doesn’t work right with my iPhone. I can’t get canon on the phone. The color isn’t the best.
Jun 12, 2020 18:56Well i got this for a present and I like it so much
Oct 02, 2020 16:08The HP DeskJet 4155e has the essential features you need to print basic color documents like recipes and forms. Print, copy and scan with ease, print from your phone, mobile fax and get easy setup. It includes the optional HP+ Smart Printing System that keeps itself up to date and ready to print from virtually anywhere at any time. Optional HP+ system requires an HP account, internet connection, and use of only Original HP Ink for the life of the printer.
I feel like HP is going for the crowd that wants to have a printer and scanner that works good for the few times you need to either print or scan a document.
In the box, you get the color ink cartridge, black ink cartridge, power cable, and the printer. They include a "Get Started" instruction sheet which pretty much says to turn the printer on and install the HP Smart app in your app store and follow the instructions within the app to setup the printer for the first time.
Setup was simple. It took me just a few minutes to download the app, hook up the printer, setup the printer, and print the test sheet. I even printed out a colored photo (on regular paper) to see the quality in the details that this printer has. I was not disappointed in it, again since it was on standard paper and not photo paper but even when I scanned the same printed copy into the scanner, it still reflected a good scan overall. Scanning just dulled some of the color but when scanning documents it did so pretty well.
Within the HP Smart app I recommend you get familiar with the tiles that are similar to how Windows 10 has some tiles for their apps. I recommend you go into your printer's "advanced settings" to get access to web services and network settings.
Some of the good things I like:
-App's ease of use
-WiFi Direct
-Airprint
-Google Cloud Print
-Style
Not to my liking:
-Some difficulty in opening up paper feeder tray and ink cartridge bay.
-Scanning quality could be better
Jul 05, 2020 20:30The printer was not every easy to connect to my network. For some reason, the wifi was not recognizing the printer in our office. I had to reboot the machine several times by unplugging and pugging it back in, then rebooting my laptop as well. I even tried to press the WPS button on the router, but that was not working.
The printer registration is required to print anything. I don't like that I have to register it with the 6 months free ink plan before I can even try it out. Yes, it is free to try, but I still have to provide my information to print anything. There could be some benefit for those who print a decent amount each month, where they would save money in the long run, than buying ink on their own. I don't go through a lot of ink in any given month at home, but for the office, I print every couple days. It also comes with an additional 1 year warranty when registered and set up in the "Advanced HP + Smart app."
This is really not meant for a multi-user office, because in order to print, you need to have an HP account. When it is installed on another computer, that too has to be registered. So if it is on my own child's computer, I can login with my account, but if it is for other people, such as an office, then each person needs to register, which I feel is a bit intrusive.
The scanning is pretty quick. I like that I can just get an instant copy color/b&w with the push of a button. I can save scans to the cloud, as well as print from the cloud. The mobile app scanning feature is pretty slick. I can take a photo scan of something on my phone and print it to my HP printer. That is a great feature. The printing is not borderless, which I wish it were.
The tray is a little hard to pull out, and not feel like I am going to break it. But for the most part, I would leave it open, sitting on my desk. The top document feeder scanner is a good feature to have, because if I want to scan more than 1 page at a time, the feeder is a must.
The printer connects with a dual-band WiFi, and self reset. That basically means that when there is an issue with the wifi signal, or it disconnects, it will reset itself and reconnect. My old printer would fail when my router reset, and I had to reconnect manually, so this feature is pretty nice. I am not sure how common that is with all printers. The 2.4ghz and 5.0ghz capability is nice, because the 2.4 network is getting pretty clogged these days.
I can send a secure mobile fax from the HP app. I never really need to do that, but something nice to know I can.
The speed of printing, for an inkjet printer, is really pretty fast. 5.5 pages per minute for color. The printer resolution is 4800x1200, but the copy directly quality is only 300x300. That works for standard text, but for anything else beyond that, it is pretty bleak. I am not sure why that was a limitation, but that seems like a miss to me. That alone removed a star from my rating.
Aug 05, 2021 12:53HP always releases decent products, and this is no exception. This isn't a cheaply made printer by any means, it was well designed, packaged, and it works really well, once you get it setup.
The glitches had to do with the setup. What was supposed to happen did not. The app could not find the printer when using the WIFI setup, and could not find the network despite there being the 2.4GHZ needed for this printer. Locally, WIFI direct, was no problem. So, this was an app glitch. In going through the app, I found the network setup, which links you to a web page, which allowed me to get in and input the WIFI network settings into the printer. Then it worked fine. But to expect a non-tech type to do this is not reasonable and would have resulted in a tech support call, and probably a lengthy one to get through it all. This could have been avoided by more beta testing of app and its functions. My WIFI is broadcasting both 2.4 and 5GHZ signals, so that should not have been the holdup to completing the install. My WIFI is nothing special, so it wasn't my network.
Now, print quality is amazing, in HP tradition. The Auto Document Feeder (ADF) worked great, no multi-page mistakes. The scanning is very clear and crisp. There is a 2 year subscription to faxing as well, so you can scan and fax to a fax machine, for those times you are required to fax something - saves a trip to Staples or whatever to fax something.
My only other concern about this is the cost of ink replacements. In a move to get printers to come with plenty of ink, this comes with the standard yield cartridges and 2 free months of ink. I don't know how much a printer this size will use in 2 months, but seems like maybe the 2 free months isn't really going to be much of a help. I'd like to see high yield cartridges included and the price to be more amenable to the wallet - sometimes buying new cartridges is more expensive than buying a new printer.
So it isn't a secret, I use my printer to print shipping/return labels for things, more than anything else. My wife prints the bank statements and keeps them for awhile. Or the kids print some things for college. These things were all great. I don't print many photos, but a test photo did turn out to be very high quality using photo paper and the standard ink that comes with it.
Is this a quality printer that will last for quite some time? Yes, I know it will, their products always do. Will it be the most cost effective solution? Maybe or maybe not, but it is reliable, it will last a very long time, and you won't be cursing when trying to print your boarding pass at 4am for a flight and your printer won't work - that kind of thing. HP stuff works, works well, and this is no exception. Just wish the app hadn't been temperamental and we'd have been at 5 stars.
Jun 30, 2020 21:18To tell you the truth if, you have Manual booklet. I'll be much easier to connect I had a hard time without the Manual booklet. My old HP Officejet 6600 was much better I really didn't need the booklet for that printer.
Oct 09, 2020 17:22I'm going to just state that, for all intents & purposes, this printer works really well. Wireless printing is a breeze. Scanning is to my computer is a snap and the Hp app is easy to use. The printer comes with 2 HP 67 ink cartridges( one black & one color) and a power cord. Just add power, paper & a dash of internet and you've got yourself a printing party. It can print up to 35 pages at once with the paper being fed from the back and documents being fed through the top tray or one at time , being placed on the scanner. It works great with my phone and PCs, so there's no problem with that. All this in a light weight package for the affordable price $99.99 USD. Now the real problem is the way HP wants you to subscribe to their ink renewal plan( instant ink program) You pay a monthly fee of $0.99 or upwards of $24.99, a month, for this service, depending on how much you print and judging from the size of the ink cartridges, you'll either be getting a steal of a deal or getting robbed blind. It is a cool idea, but the jury is still out on that one. Basically the printer is fair at best, but the ink will not last very long at all. So, that's where they'll get you. I will recommend this, butonly if you're printing a whole lot. That $24.99 plan just may save you some coin in the long run.
Jul 25, 2021 20:29HP has really gone down hill. This is the 3rd HP I’ve had in 6 months. The 4100 won’t stay connected to the internet. Every time I want to print I have to spend 20 minutes on the HP website trying to connect it, and trouble shoot it. Do not waste your money on this. Last night I spent 30 minutes trouble shooting and it still won’t print. The display reads that it is connected to WIFI, but when I go to web site to print says it’s off line. Maybe it’s the requirement to have to do everything with HP’s website now. Its to much of a hassle will definitely take it back. I’m ready to go back to Brother for a printer.
Feb 20, 2021 10:29Like they say, “you get what you pay for”! It’s not as sturdy as my previous Cannon that cost 3X more (fax, 2 sided copy feature, other bells and whistles I didn’t use that much). However, once I learned how it functions I must say I’m pretty pleased with the fact it meets my basic needs. Would recommend if you’re looking for something “simple”!
Jun 11, 2021 17:08So far so good. Printer is working perfectly, I’m a beginner crafter and this printer is getting the job done.
