Description

Sony Alpha FX3 - the most compact & lightweight Cinema Line Camera, featuring back-illuminated 4K full-frame sensor, 15+ stop dynamic range, high sensitivity and movie oriented robust design with XLR audio inputs.

21 Features
  • Custom zoom settings: Optimized for movie making, the FX3 features a zoom lever located on the top of the grip which not only controls compatible powered zoom lenses, but also allows Clear Image Zoom to be used with unpowered zoom and prime lenses with less image degradation.
  • Real-time Eye AF: Real-time Eye AF to detect eye data and track the subject’s eye with unprecedented precision. The superior real-time data processing capability of the new BIONZ XR image processing engine ensures accurate, reliable detection even when faces are looking away at extreme angles.
  • S-Cinetone for that expressive cinematic look: FX3 allows users to easily create a cinematic look without post-production using S-Cinetone picture profile. Inspired by the color science of Sony VENICE camera, S-Cinetone delivers natural mid-tones that are essential to cinematic expression.
  • Uninterrupted 4K 60p recording: FX3 combines a fan for active cooling in addition to the unique camera-wide passive heat dissipation structure resulting in uninterrupted 4K 60p recording
  • Fast Hybrid AF in all modes: The FX3 inherits AF performance from Sony’s FX9 and FX6 Cinema Line cameras, incorporating the highly acclaimed Fast Hybrid AF for movie shooting in all modes, including 4K 120p.
  • Created for content creators: Every aspect of this camera, from hardware such as controls, tally lamp, custom buttons, and a vari-angle LCD monitor, to software-based features such as touch-responsive menus and parameters, have been designed to give creators what they need in real-world applications.
  • Direct Iris, ISO and Shutter exposure control, optimized for video: The Flexible Exposure Mode allows the Auto and Manual modes for iris (aperture), shutter speed, and ISO to be set independently.
  • High speed for slow motion: 4K resolution at up to 120 frames per second delivers extraordinarily smooth slow-motion imagery. In addition to supporting 10-bit 4:2:2 recording, this feature can be used with efficient Long GOP compression or high-quality All-Intra compression.
  • 16-bit RAW output for movie: To answer the increasing demand for RAW recording, the FX3 is capable of 16-bit RAW output up to 4K 60p to an external device via full-size HDMI Type A, for applications that demand the highest quality and post-production flexibility provided by RAW output.
  • 10-bit 4:2:2 HLG: The FX3 provides HLG high-dynamic-range picture profile that supports the wide-gamut BT.2020 color space for true-to-life imagery with detailed shadows and highlights, with no need for color grading.
  • 12.1MP JPEG, RAW and HEIF still image options up to 10fps with AF/AE: Even though the FX3 is optimized for cinematography, it still has the capabilities to capture 12.1MP stills in JPEG, RAW and HEIF at up to 10fps with continuous autofocus and auto-exposure.
  • Optimized for cinematic expression: The FX3 features a 10.2MP Full-frame Backside-illuminated Exmor R CMOS sensor that delivers sensitivity, speed and superior movie quality. The sensor delivers up to 15+ stops of dynamic range and drastically reduced noise for clean images.
  • High-performance fast processing: The FX3 features the BIONZ XR system architecture, that makes it possible to deliver high sensitivity and natural gradations, low noise, as well as more precise AF plus the ability to process the large amounts of data required for 4K recording.
  • Smallest Cinema Line camera for solo shooting: As the most compact model in the Cinema Line, the FX3 is not only the smallest and lightest. It weighs just 1.58 lbs. (715 g), including battery and memory cards, and the body is only 5.11” x 3.33” x 3.06” (129.7 x 84.5 x 77.8mm) WxHxD.
  • 10-bit 4:2:2 video reaches new levels of realism: The FX3 offer several recording options to meet the needs of different content creators, including; 10-bit 4:2:2 XAVC S and XAVC S-I formats in either 4K or FHD as well as 10-bit 4:2:2 XAVC HS, in 4K only.
  • Easy S-Log matching with professional camcorders: In many cinema workflows, the ability to match the color of footage from multiple cameras is essential. The FX3 includes S-Log2 and S-Log3 gamma curves, the latter emphasizing shadow to mid-tone gradations.
  • Rec. tally lamps and rec. confirmation: Three recording lamps are provided so that both the operator and talent can easily confirm recording. The Rec. button on the top illuminates when recording is in progress as well as a front and back tally lamp of the camera.
  • Dual card slots, both compatible with SD and CFexpress Type A: Two identical card slots make sure redundant recording or extended record times with additional media options. Both Slot 1 and Slot 2 media slots support UHS-I and UHS-II SDXC/SDHC cards
  • Durable accessory mounting screw points: The FX3 is designed to eliminate the need for a camera cage, including six standard ¼”-20 UNC threaded mounting points to easily and securely attach compatible accessories such as external monitors, recorders, wireless microphones, or other add-ons.
  • Digital XLR on top handle, MI shoe and 3.5mm jack audio options: The XLR module on the handle which includes a 3.5mm mic jack takes care of the A/D conversion and DSP and transfers up to 4 channels digital audio data directly to the camera for outstanding audio quality.
  • FTP file transfer for stills and movies with ‘save and load’: The FX3 can transfer movie and still image files to a specified remote FTP server via wireless LAN, high-speed wired LAN via an optional USB to Ethernet adapter, or a USB-tethered smartphone connection to a cellular network.

    Beast of a camera

When the FX3 was announced it was criticized for being too much like the A7SIII and lacking the evf was a turn off for some. What some fail to realize is that this is a cinema camera workhorse. Not only can you continuously record it has a built in fan and heatsink that keeps the device at a stable temperature. Not only is it practical in size but it has all the extensions needed to add a rig or gimbal support. Look if you dont mind not having an evf this is a great cinema camera. Theres also an option to shoot stills if needed. Its low light capabilities are impressive and it allows you to push it up to number like 50k and still have perfect image quality. If you want something thats going to work long hours continuously then i higly recommend this camera. Cant wait to get back from work to go out filming again

Is the Sony FX3 for you?

So far so good, will update as I continue using. Overall form factor is a little above average, nimble to carry but the grip although a little larger than the A7siii it can take some time to get used to, not that it's bad but I personally find it not as ergonomic as I would want but again this can be subjective. As far as overall thoughts, so far image is okay, better than most camera bellow it's price range but not by a lot. And usage is pretty discrete and there is possibility here.

Best camera I've ever used let alone held!

This camera is hands down a perfect 10/10. I'm not a photographer I'm a straight video head and this camera provides literally everything I need and more. The buttons layouts are one of the best things to have when you're shooting video because they're only a couple of inches a part from your finger, no more messing with the menu screen every time you have to change a setting. I couldn't have asked more for a beautiful camera.

    Small Size Big Performance

I have 2 Fx3's and I love them. as a professional videographer who travels a lot this camera is the perfect size without sacrificing quality and performance. The Auto Focus System is crazy good. I have these paired with Tamron Lenses which I also highly recommend.

Great camera, don't forget the extras!

This camera is amazing, but just a part of a system. The best memory cards are $200 for 80gb, or you can buy a $600 Ninja V and an SSD or two. Just like a film camera it has to be 'built' to take advantage of everything it has to offer.

The Most Amazing Prosumer Camera SONY has made!

The most amazing prosumer camera Sony has every made!! If you're a pro YouTuber or videographer, this camera is a dream. It's not quite "cinema" level because it lacks several cinema features such as Shutter Angle, 4K DCI, true 24p, anamorphic modes etc. But still, I absolutely love this camera.

My god what is this beast?

I shot Nikon for 8 years... 8 YEARS! from d3200 to d7100, to d750 all the way up the d810... Every upgrade gave me something slightly better but overall it was still really about the same camera. Better ISO, more megapixels, and so on, But the way I shot never really changed. I could produce amazing results on either one of the nikons without ever really feeling like the camera was any better. The auto focus, no matter how much hype there was with every upgrade, frankly still felt like I still had to do all the work. Tracking, framing, focus recompose, hold the camera steady/"properly", or get a OS lens, shaky hands? sorry shoot higher shutter speeds. ALL on me as if Auto focus was somehow a required skill for photographers... But this...this is a whole new world. would you ever shoot sports with say...a 85mm prime on nikon or canon? probably not. But on the R3, sony says "here shoot what you want, how you want, when you want, and hey here's 42 megapixles at 10fps for the blank of it, oh and only $3200"

WHAT?! To get that kind of performance on nikon or canon you would have to spend $6000 dollars, and you STILL dont get a live image preview, you still dont get a true silent shutter, and you STILL dont get a fully customizable button layout. AND I MEAN FULLY custom. Like i can set individual buttons to focus areas with different shutter, iso , and aperture combos. YEAH. Sony litterally said "DO WHAT EVER YOU WANT WITH THIS" its insane. Oh yeah and 5 axis image stabilization makes it so irrelevant stuff like camera holding etiquette can jump off a bridge. Ive shot portraits one handed with the camera parrallel to my body, WHILE holding the camera BY THE LENS! DO WHAT YOU WANT! Best camera on the market for sure.

    Went mirrorless

So far, this is a GREAT CAMERA. I have much to learn but , being a long term Sony camera user, I am finding it relatively easy. It is just so much lighter to carry and the A mount to E mount converter is letting me use my array of lenses. I am very happy that I purchased this camera and recommend it for professional work. The 42 megapixel sensor is great.

Great for when you get composition wrong

Composition can make or break a great photo. With the A7R3, if you get the composition wrong, the ability to crop maintaining incredible detail is amazing to get that just right composition. The eye auto focus is amazingly fast and the 10 fps shooting is incredible. I recommend getting the UHS-II card for this camera. Keep in mind that only one slot is UHS-II and the other UHS-I. It would have been nice to have both at UHS-II. It would have been nice to have the Sony UHS-II reader as a companion to this camera included instead of separate purchase but that has nothing to do with the camera. As far as the camera, the battery life is nearly all day for the hobbyist but I recommend carry of a second battery. With the prior generation, I had to carry 4 batteries. This is a huge plus on great battery life. I like the dual slots. A pro camera to never miss a shot as I have two SD cards in the camera and the 2nd SD Card always serves as a backup to the 1st. With the great ISO and 5-axis stabilization, I can finally take evening shots without a tripod and really capture the moment.

Purchased this camera at the end of May. Such an epic camera! Love the colors it produces and the mega-pixels on this camera is crazy high. A small learning curve as I am switching from another brand but fairly easy to learn if you have some prior knowledge about photography. Highly recommend!

    Amazing

It is a very good camera, I would recommend it to anybody that knows about photography as a professional. It has an extensive menú option which sometimes can be very hard to understand. Also, you must buy a very good SDcard just because otherwise can be very slow.

    Color quality is exceptional!!

I love it especially with the fact that I'll be able to sleep at night knowing if somebody's on my property or at my door. I also got a couple of family members to invest in getting the flood light monitor. I also love the fact that the light goes on as soon as I appear or anything appears on my property.

Newer model is much worse color handling

I'm not sure why they changed the camera, but the older ones I have (for a similar price) have a MUCH better picture. The older one has a LOT more color contrast, light handling, and a clearer picture. This camera would be ok if you didn't have other to compare to. In the pic, the bottom camera is the older model (better) and the top camera is this one.

Does what is supposed to do, but can get better

Love Ring cameras and doorbells. They do what they should do. A few things can still improve: (1) I still think the motion zone and light activation zones are hard to set. It does take a bit of tweaking to not get people in the sidewalk or street based on where you put the motion zone indicators. (2) Even though I have all cameras set to disarmed mode with motion detection and alerts off in this mode, it will still activate the light when we are sitting on our back deck at night (if you turn off activate light at night upon motion detection, the lights don't go on at night when you arm the cameras). You can’t set these based on the arm or disarm mode. The only way to get around this was to hardwire a wall switch for the back camera that we turn off when we sit out at night with the fire pit. (3) motion is set to people only, but motion is still detected for spiders, birds, wind blowing the grill cover, etc. I will play with the sensitivity, but I believe it is on low all ready. Despite these areas for improvement, the cameras are still a great purchase. All ours are hardwired with individual wall switches to turn power off independently. Love the Alexa interaction. Own 4 cameras and a doorbell.

    OUTSTANDING VLOG CAMERA

The Sony αZV-E10 (Model: ILCZVE10L/B) is custom tailored for vlogging, both in its controls and software, but it is also an extremely impressive still camera and is an outstanding piece of equipment, overall.

The Sony αZV-E10 offers a stellar array of features and functionality and excellent specifications. This mirrorless, interchangeable lens, APS-C sensor camera is terrific. It is a robust and flexible camera with outstanding hardware and excellent interchangeable lenses.

The αZV-E10 is compact in size and light in weight, making it easy and convenient to carry and use.

The Sony αZV-E10 vlog camera takes the best features and functionality of the Sony ZV-1 fixed lens, 20 megapixel vlog camera and incorporates them with the backbone of the Sony α6100 interchangeable lens, 24.2 megapixel camera. This new hybridized model is refined and customized with additional, specialized features for vlogging, delivering much of the best of both models.

The αZV-E10 sensor is a 24.2 megapixel, APS-C, Exmor CMOS sensor measuring 23.5 x 15.6 mm (not full frame). The αZV-E10 has powerful and outstanding Auto-Focus and Auto-Exposure functionality and offers vloggers and photographers complete exposure control with more than a dozen exposure modes, five focus modes, thirteen picture effect modes and seven creative style modes.

The αZV-E10 has an incredible array of digital imaging capabilities. The Auto-Focus system is fantastic; possibly the best available. With 425 auto-focus points, real-time eye AF (human and animal) and real-time tracking that genuinely performs as described and as expected, it truly excels, and exceeds most other cameras. Exposure control with the 1200 zone evaluative metering system which operates in center-weighted, spot metering and full-screen modes is absolutely outstanding. The αZV-E10 has Sony’s advanced image processor, the Bionz X, which is the underpinning of the excellent image rendition, with accurate color rendition, including skin tones.

The αZV-E10 image formats range through 14 bit (compressed) RAW providing for excellent post-production editing capability. The αZV-E10 shoots video at resolutions of up to 4k (oversampled from 6k), and offers a wide range of frame rates (allowing for a variety of slow or fast motion shooting), image sizes and compression schemes. Video functions also include multiple cinema profiles including HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) and S-Log3/2. The αZV-E10 includes a dedicated Still/Movie/S&Q button to shoot 4x slow motion video, or 60x quick motion.

The αZV-E10 also features a dedicated top panel button to control background blurring. This button instantly toggles between a clearly focused background, and a defocused, blurred background (bokeh effect). A unique new “Product Showcase” feature has been added for vloggers. One button depression toggles the feature which instantly shifts focus from the vloggers face to whatever object (product) is extended directly in front of the camera for close-up. Occasionally, this feature required a few attempts before it would shift focus to relatively small items.

Audio quality from the three capsule directional microphone on the top panel is excellent. Sony thoughtfully includes a “dead cat” (synthetic fur) wind screen which is helpful when shooting outdoors. The Multi-Interface Hot Shoe supports digital audio with external microphones, as well as flash units. There is also a 3.5mm input jack for an external microphone, and another 3.5mm output jack for headphones to monitor audio recording. The mike jack is behind a plastic door which candidly appears very delicate and feels as if it will break off quite easily.

I miss the built-in flash of the α6100. For still photography flash is essential in low-light conditions, but it is also extremely important in marginal light conditions and shadows where having fill-in flash is invaluable.

The αZV-E10 is equipped with an articulating 3” TFT, LCD touchscreen which rotates from the left of the camera body. While it is essential for vlogging, it is also valuable for low-angle shots and high-angle shots. The αZV-E10 also supports shooting video in vertical orientation. In addition to the red tally light on the camera body, the touchscreen illuminates a highly visible red border when recording, which is perfect for vlogging.

The only performance deficiency that I encountered was that of minor rolling shutter effects, particularly during fast pans in 4k, which is common with CMOS sensor cameras. Touchscreen functionality is still limited and is not available for the multilayer menus.

The αZV-E10 lacks the electronic viewfinder that I enjoy on the α6100. Although a viewfinder may not be considered a necessity for vlogging, it is extremely useful in both still photography and some videography, particularly when using long lenses. Handheld shooting with a telephoto lens benefits from the more stable shooting platform achieved when the camera is supported at three points including hands and face, with bent arms braced on the photographer’s body. This is particularly important when framing the shot, and in holding the frame. An electronic viewfinder (EVF) is also essential when checking or correcting focus and when manually adjusting focus.

If your intended use of the αZV-E10 is exclusively for vlogging you may not miss the flash or viewfinder, but the αZV-E10 is much more than a single-purpose vlogging camera. It is an incredibly powerful, flexible and competent digital imaging video and still camera.

A strap is included, but a rear lens cap for the kit lens and a body cap are not.

The memory card specifications for on-board image storage is SDXC UHS-I or II, V30, U3, C10. The αZV-E10 has 2.4Ghz Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n and Bluetooth for file transfer, remote camera control and integration with the Sony GPVPT2BT Shooting Grip with Wireless Remote Commander, which is a versatile and useful accessory that I use for both handheld shooting and for tabletop tripod functionality.

The addition of the αZV-E10 to my gear locker has enabled me to undertake dual camera videos. I have both the αZV-E10 and the α6100 mounted to GPVPT2BT Shooting Grips. Both cameras can be stationary on their GPVPT2BT tripods, or one can be stationary with the other utilized handheld, and either can be easily and quickly transitioned between tripod and handheld.

With the customized controls and features which are tailored for vlogging, and the additional benefit of electronic image stabilization (not IBIS), the αZV-E10 is my primary camera for handheld shooting, while the α6100 shoots B-roll from its tripod.

The controls and software are very robust, with many options and settings which afford complete creative control over this very powerful, yet compact camera. The online documentation and help files are excellent and comprehensive. The PDF “Help Guide” is an impressive 577 pages.

The αZV-E10, is compatible with all Sony E-Mount lenses. The kit lens is the SELP1650, 16-50mm (35mm equivalent focal length 24-75mm), f/3.5 – 5.6, power zoom lens with Optical Steady-Shot (OSS) image stabilization which is further enhanced by the cameras digital zoom. Zoom can also be controlled with the dedicated zoom lever on the shutter button, and programmable zoom speed (range 1-8).

My new favorite lens to carry as my second lens is the outstanding Sony SEL70350G, 70-350mm, (35mm equivalent focal length 105-525mm), f/4.5 – 6.3, OSS zoom lens. With this excellent zoom telephoto lens and the kit lens, a great range of shooting environments are accommodated with only two, compact and relatively lightweight lenses.

The αZV-E10 is supplied with one NP-FW50 battery pack, which utilizes in-camera charging. An external battery charger, and additional battery packs are available as accessories. The in-camera recharge time is approximately a couple of hours, but battery life is excellent.

The αZV-E10 can run hot during lengthy video recording sessions. The internal thermal protection sensor shut down the camera after about 50 minutes of 1080p recording, and after about 30 minutes of 4k recording.

Sony Alpha cameras have proven themselves to be excellent, well-respected cameras. The Sony αZV-E10 is just such a camera.

I am genuinely enjoying using the αZV-E10. The feature set and exposure controls are so extensive and robust, that any videography / photography utilization is very well supported. In automated modes, the αZV-E10 is in virtual control of the photography and can be trusted to produce excellent images and videos of professional quality, with simplified, automated ease of use. The αZV-E10 will fire at 11 fps, bracket exposures and shoot with a 1/4000 sec. shutter speed. Low light shooting is excellent. The ISO standard/normal range is 32,000 and an expanded ISO range of an incredible 51,200 is available.

Video capabilities are beyond extensive, including Cinema Picture Modes. The customized vlogging controls, features and functionality tailor this camera for optimized vlogging.

The camera hardware seems to be high-quality. The lens mount is metal, and lens lockup is solid. The αZV-E10 body is plastic but is not fully dust and weather sealed. It is sleek and elegant, and feels good when handled.

The Sony αZV-E10 is really an excellent camera. It is extremely capable and produces excellent videos and photographs. I am enjoying the αZV-E10 immensely. The size, weight and outstanding features and technical capabilities of the αZV-E10 really make it an excellent camera for many applications, and render it the perfect, optimized vlogging camera. Of course I recommend this impressive camera very highly!

    Great Camera for Video Creators!!!

So I've been using the ZV-E10 for a few weeks now and since I also have the Sony A6400, I am relatively familiar with the core functions and user interface as the menu is exactly the same on both cameras.

I'm going to try and break this up neatly into different sections so you can skip to the part you're interested in. Let's get into it!

Usability - The ZV-E10 is extremely easy to use especially if you're just starting out. The camera has 3 main modes and will cycle through these modes at the press of a single button.

On the top of the camera you will see a button with a camera/video/S&Q icon. This is the mode button and will switch from taking photos to videos and also that buttery smooth slow motion setting (slow & quick). I think this is great because by default the camera is set up for automatic in each of these modes so if you're not familiar with manual settings of cameras, Sony has you covered here. Just press, select and shoot!

The ZV-E10 also has way less buttons to worry about with a simplified approach, I really dig it. There is a button for everything you NEED, and you can also customize a bunch of buttons to be shortcuts for your favorite features. So I think less is more here,,,,

Swapping out different lenses is also very easy to do with the press of a button and a twist of the lens, you're off to changing your entire outlook on what you can capture depending on the lens that you install. This is another great feature and is also what separates it from being an all in one point and shoot, which are great cameras but are limited in their capabilities.

Now even though I believe this camera to be great for beginners, it's also a great tool for intermediate to advanced level users.. I personally will be using this for B-Roll and a Second camera angle while shooting my YouTube videos. It's honestly perfect for that.

    Quality -

The ZV-E10 comes with Sony's 24MP Mirrorless Crop Sensor that is tried and true. The image quality is crisp and clean and performs very well in low light situations providing you are using the correct lens for low light situations. I also have the Sony 35mm f1.8 lens and if you're looking for a great all around lens that has exceptional low light capabilities as well as a walk around portrait lens to pair with this camera, then I highly recommend you pick up this lens. Its perfect size and capabilities will bring the ZV-E10 to life when it comes to that amazing background blur and excellent low light capability.

The video quality again just like mentioned before with photos is exceptional for a camera this small and light. If you're looking to start a YouTube channel or use it for social media, perhaps just as a second camera for B-Roll, then for the price and what you get, you can't go wrong.

Other things to note is the Auto focus is ROCK solid!! This comes with eye auto focus for both human and pets, in photo and video mode!!!! That's awesome especially because my A6400 does not have these features in Video mode. Another reason why I will be using this for video over my A6400.

Audio - There are 2 parts to this!

1- The onboard microphone and the onboard speakers. Just to be quick the onboard speakers are just good enough for you to hear what was recorded, but not good enough for you to tell the quality of what was recorded. Luckily Sony has you covered with a headphone port on the side of the camera which is an AMAZING feature in a camera of this price. This will allow you to monitor your audio levels while recording as well as playback your videos to hear the audio. This is a game changer! My A6400 doesn't even have this feature!

2- The other part of the audio is the On-Board Mic. On the top of the camera you will see this large perforated square and this is where the microphones are located. Now being that sony is marketing this to a vlogger type customer, they have specifically worked on this part of the camera and I can tell you that compared to my A6400, the audio is actually surprisingly good straight out of the camera. Of course you also have a microphone jack on the side of the camera to plug in an external microphone to get the best sound possible.

    Screen -

Now what everyone has been waiting for!! The new fold out screen is a new feature on a camera in this price range, and sooooo many people have been waiting for this! Especially content creators…. I have been using the A6400 and while I love that screen because it flips up and I can properly frame myself, I LOVE< LOVE >LOVE this new flip out/swivel screen. It's just nice and easy to operate and maneuver to get certain shots. I feel like all of the Sony cameras going forward should ( and probably will ) get this new feature. Now the screen itself is very nice and the colors are true to what your eyes see , and I generally had no problem with it until I took the camera outside. Using this camera outside in the sun was very difficult. There is a brightness option to increase the brightness to max brightness, however it was still difficult to see and being that the camera DOES NOT have a viewfinder, taking pictures with this camera is almost impossible in sunny bright situations. So it's obvious sony is aiming this camera at people who make videos over those who primarily take pictures. Just keep that in mind.

    Battery Life -

Okay so battery life is pretty good with this camera. I would say on average with what I get with my A6400, maybe just a slight bit better because it's newer and possibly has some optimization done to its processor. I'm just guessing here.

It's hard for me to give a battery life estimate on the camera because I use it a little here and a little there. I haven't used it constantly until the battery depletes, but I would say it's probably going to be good for most people, and if you're a power user you will already know to grab some spares to keep in your bag.

    Stabilization -

So while Sony is gearing this camera towards Vloggers, I would say not to count on the in body stabilization, as it is only electronic and in my testing doesn't really work that well.

In the days of using it I noticed that it has a significant crop factor ( zooms in on you ) to the point where it's very difficult to get your surroundings in the frame with you when shooting. I also noticed that when using it, it creates a small blur every-time a foot step is taken. To me the constant blurring of the person is worse than the slight shaking of the background with the electronic stabilization on. I prefer to turn off the Active Steadyshot stabilization which gives me a larger frame to shoot my video in as well as no blurring of my face when I'm walking. AND if you walk gently with the included 16-50 kit lens, you will be fine. Those who will be filming from a seated position or moving around minimally, such as panning shots, you will be completely fine with the steady shot set to standard which will turn on the steady shot in the lense that you're using. In my case the kit lens which has it built in.

    Sony Shooting Grip -

Now I want to throw this in there for those of you who are looking to VLOG with this camera or anyone who is looking for some type of control of the camera while holding it in one hand.

The shooting grip is surprisingly GOOD. I don't think I would have ever bought one but now that I used it, and with this camera, I can see the value in it. It makes holding the camera much more comfortable as well as giving you one finger control over the recording, shutter, and zoom functions of your camera using a low energy bluetooth technology. It's also great for when you find a seat to place the camera on a table in front of you to continue shooting your videos.

If you're looking to VLOG I would say to really give the Shooting Grip a look. You might just love it!

    Final Thoughts -

There's so much more to this camera, and if I sat here and wrote about it all, well it would take a looooooong time. I tried to structure this review and hopefully it will help you with your decision in purchasing a camera. I started with Canon and then used Sony, and fell in love with their cameras. There's something magical about them and I feel as if they inspire creativity in me. Maybe they will do the same for you!

    * NOTE : THIS CAMERA DOES NOT COME WITH A VIEWFINDER AND BECAUSE OF THAT I CANNOT RECOMMEND THIS CAMERA FOR PHOTOGRAPHY ALONE

    Perfect Camera For Content Creators

The Alpha ZV-E10 is the latest all new offering from Sony. As a budget vlog camera, with it's extremely generous asking price, abundant features and excellent quality, folks are in for a treat with this one. It's surprisingly lightweight and perfect for portability when not in use. The design is very similar to the previous ZV-1 model but with a few extra bells and whistles. Specifically this time around you have the ability to interchange lenses with ease and transform an already outstanding device into multipurpose powerhouse. As mentioned above this camera is tailored to vloggers with it's convenient flip out screen giving you selfie style viewing. As a beginner, one may feel overwhelmed by the plentiful settings and options so I recommend watching walkthrough videos online to give you a better understanding. However, if you're familiar with these types of cameras you should feel confident in your purchase. There is no built in flash so an extra attachment may be necessary, I didn't really have trouble capturing scenes in low light environments. The touch screen is just used for focusing which I would have liked to see other uses for. One of my favorite features though is the intelligent auto mode. This does exactly what it says, automatically adjusts the settings of your shot, which makes it easy for newer vloggers to get the best detail with no effort. I was very impressed to see high quality 4k video, clear crisp audio, as well as a setting to record in 120 hz making all of my videos ultra smooth and satisfying. And with that, if you download and install the imaging edge mobile app to your smartphone, you can easily transfer all of your photos and videos to your gallery within no time wirelessly. Overall you really can't go wrong here, Sony definitely came out swinging and dare I say hit a home run with the ZV-E10.

So who is this camera actually FOR?

So who is this camera FOR?

    PROS:

    - Sony E-mount

    - APS-C sensor (crop sensor)

    - fully rotating screen for “selfie” holding

    - Rec tally light and boarder (optional settings) to make sure you’re recording

    - powered zoom lens that works with sony vlog kit remote

    - easy switch to S&Q mode (Slow mo or time lapse) only 120fps slow motion though

    - Image stabilization (digital)

    - Face and eye auto detect focus and continuous focus

    - USB C charging AND webcam/stream option plug and play

    - On board mic is actually usable (especially with the supplied wind screen) . It's not gonna be great but you can use it in a pinch. More on this below

    - Headphone out jack!! THANK YOU SONY!

    CONS:

    - Face softening, one touch background blur, and creative style. These are not BAD, they’re just usually not practical to use. Basically bloat

    - battery is a bit smaller, which means you need some spares for long days or a charger.

    - no EVF (view finder)

    BACKGROUND:

Let me start by saying this is my 3rd Sony E-mount camera and officially gives me a “pro level big boy” a “smaller size high end shooter” and a “small travel size day to day shooter” that I can still trust to get good images and video with and all three use the same lenses and menus and accessories. If ever there was a good example of why you should stay in one ecosystem it’s sony E-mount. It allows you to grow and change without losing gear you already purchased.

For ME this meant getting the ZV-E10 over the ZV1. The ability to use my lenses I already had was a big push but I still needed a smaller vlog style camera for out and about days when I didn’t want to carry over 3,000 dollars of heavy equipment for a basic walk n talk. If you don’t have or plan to have more sony camera gear or lenses you may want to get the similar ZV-1 that does not have removable lenses.

    UNBOXING AND FIRST IMPRESSION:

So as I said, I’m not exactly new to Sony cameras and therefore, for me, it was pretty much business as usual when I opened that familiar orange box. I have the kit lens model so inside was the body and the 16-50mm powered zoom lens. Also inside is a strap, USB C charging cable and the usual paperwork. I charged the battery up and once it was full I started going over the menu and changing all the things I like to change and set in my Sony menu. Once I customized to my liking I started test shooting and thinking what uses I can get out of this body.

    SO WHO’S IT FOR?!!

I feel like the biggest question around this camera has been who is this for. It’s branded as a VLOG camera, and that’s cool, but really that’s just a word we throw around now because it gets the attention of youtubers and vlogers and the likes. But what it means is this is a simplified version of a really really good camera brand at a price that is reasonable for the basic, intro user. This is geared towards people who don’t really know how to shoot manual or use pro gear but they want better quality than an iphone video. That doesn’t mean people who DO know what they’re doing should pass on this. Like me, this is a great camera for pro use too and it’s basically the same guts as their high end lines. What it DOES do is give room for those newbies to grow and still be a useful camera as they learn and try to get off that auto setting.

If you are trying to up your VLOG game or you want to get better at shooting photos and videos or both, this is definitely the camera for you. If you see yourself growing and you’re ok buying more lenses and accessories for your camera, this is definitely the camera for you. If you think you’ll never buy another lens and you plan to use your camera once every couple months, maybe get the zv1 or a small point and shoot. The benefit to the ZVE10 more than anything is the e-mount. This will open your world to higher quality and an amazing range of good sony glass to get just the right image. In my opinion, that is worth the upgrade vs the V1.

    TECHNICAL GOODIES:

So if you got this far, you’ve probably decided this may be the camera for you. So what can it do? A lot. Let’s start with the VLOG aspects since that is Sony’s target audience. Can you take this thing, out of the box, and start vlogging down the street? Absolutely. It won’t magically be awesome quality, but it will automatically already be better than stuff you see from phones, or low quality gear.

The on board microphone on this camera is actually really good. Like impressively good for an onboard camera. Usually I would say NEVER use the mic on a camera body for so many reasons, and the ZV-E10 isn’t completely different, but it actually can be used in a pinch and with a touch of work in post, you can have a good audio quality. At least for a youtube video. In reality, for me, I will use the onboard as a backup in case the main mic drops out, bad sound, etc. But if I was making a quick video for home use, I 100% would be ok with the on board mic, something I can’t say about any of my other Sony bodies. Throw the dead cat (wind filter) on and you don’t have to worry about wind noise either. I was hoping to shoot some video examples but I have run out of time but I’m sure there are examples on the internet somewhere to show you how the mic works. Here’s the best part though, as you grow and want to use a better mic you still can. With a mic input AND headphone out, you can use any other mic including a sony shotgun mount on the hot shoe or other accessories they offer and still be able to monitor in real time with the headphone jack. This really is an ALL IN ONE VLOG camera set up.

Image quality has been just as good as audio quality. For video, there is rolling shutter, this has been beaten to the ground, but here’s the thing; if you’re shooting video moving so fast that you see the rolling shutter, then you’re shooting the wrong way. Slow your movements, compose your shots, and use a lower shutter speed and you won’t have the dreaded rolling shutter issues you may have seen complained about.

Photos come out sharp and clean and the crop sensor really shows it’s skills over the older ZV1 which had a smaller sensor. The APSC sensor in the ZVE10 is the same as the 6000 series, one of sony's most respected line of camera bodies, and when I put on some higher end lenses, I was able to get just as good shots with this smaller camera as I can with my 6600. A Sony 50mm f1.8 performs amazing in controlled situations and I shot portraits that I would still be willing to show to clients. That’s saying something for a budget friendly VLOG camera!!

VLOG style shooting was just as easy to use, and the screen flipping around to “selfie” mode was very useful. I have the Sony remote I THINK they now call “VLOGER KIT” but it’s a bluetooth remote and small tripod with some button controls. This includes zoom control that works with the kit lens’ power zoom and the record button for video or photo, all at your fingertips. There is even a custom button. If you’re serious about your VLOG work and you need a good handle but can’t afford an expensive gimbal yet, you should look into the sony remote, it’s really useful and Best Buy also sells it. One last thought on my VLOG test, the REC tally light was useful but I eventually decided to turn off the red border on the display because it felt like too much and was a little distracting. Also if you crank the stabilization settings, you will crop in a considerable amount. So you may want to consider using medium or none and fix any shake later in post production where you have more control over crop and the likes. Also the stabilization is digital, so essentially it is just doing what your post processing software is doing anyway but with less control in camera.

    OVERALL:

I really like what Sony is doing with this Z-V series and I don’t think this is so much an update to the ZV1 as much as a second option in the same class. They are both great cameras with different features based on your needs. If you found yourself agreeing with me through this excessively long review, then you probably want to get the ZV-E10 but if you think that sounds like too much, go for the V1, sure. But remember they are about the same cost, if you see yourself growing in this field and want to really get involved in cameras and shooting, then get the E10. You’ll have an amazing starter camera that will grow with you for years and years. Or if you’re a pro level shooter and looking for something small and cheap that you can bring around but still want your pro options, this is also great and will work with all that glass and accessories you already spent money on!

    Insanely good mirrorless camera.

I've been taking pictures dating back 37 years to an old Nikon F3. I've recently gotten into videography and this little camera was too good to pass up. The price is extremely attractive and the Vlogging features along with the ability to be used as an interchangeable lens camera for photography seemed too good to be true. While it lacks many handy on-board controls for setting changes like a higher-end mirrorless or DSLR cameras might have, that is not the point of this camera - and I found, with a few settings in the quick menu, I didn't really miss them. Once you get it set up with a few personal changes to the custom buttons, this little camera can punch WAY above its weight class.

    - Image/video quality:

The ZV-E10 uses the same APS-C sensor that's used all the way up the A6--- line. With the exception of a standard Sony weakness for rolling shutter when taking videos and panning quickly or shooting very fast moving objects, the image and video quality are excellent. I was able to grab very high quality still images and stunning video that held up to post processing. 4K/30p video with log profiles and 8-bit 4:2:0 recording is certainly more than good enough for a blogger starting out and even held up well for getting a surprisingly clean key for green screen effects. I would have loved to see something like 10-bit 4:2:2 output over HDMI for the very best output quality but that really is asking a bit much in this price range.

    -Vlogging:

This camera is the first tool in my starting toolkit as a vlogger. Let me tell you what I was able to do: Within minutes (literally less than a hour of testing!), I was able to take sharp video in selfie mode, test product mode (which isn't the kind of video I'll be taking but wow it works well to automatically switch focus from the presenter to a product and back), switch lenses and take 4K video of birds in the trees out the window into my backyard, attach the camera to my laptop and toggle the menu item for USB streaming and have an instant 720p webcam on my laptop for Zoom and OBS Studio. If you're worried about the resolution of the USB stream (I thought I was) don't be. The quality of the image is good enough to upscale to 1080p and, when compared to the output of a high-end 1080p-native webcam, still came out looking much better. If you want more pixels you can get an inexpensive video capture adapter to plug the HDMI output from the ZV-E10 into a USB port on your laptop and stream up to a glorious 4K.

    Sound:

The on-board microphone is incredibly impressive. No other on-board microphone sounds this clear for all around video. The clip-on windscreen is also a nice touch. To be honest, I immediately went to an external microphone plugged into the mic jack for flexibility but the point is I didn't have to to get some impressively clean audio even outdoors.

    Kit lens:

The included 16-50mm (24-75mm equivalent) kit lens is more than capable. It's compact yet manages a good wide-to-telephoto range that will keep a lot of users happy without having to swap. But the point is that you CAN swap. Focus is fast and nearly silent, so there's no hint of focus hunting or noise on your video. Zoom is loud and will be captured but I don't tend to zoom while I'm recording. If that's something you need to do, swap in a different lens with a manual zoom and go.

    Battery life:

It's not a big battery, but I was able to go a fully day of on-and-off shooting on one charge - but barely. I did invest in a power adapter that uses a dummy battery that plugs into the wall for longer video sessions, but the camera will also charge via USB when streaming. USB charging doesn't seem to fully keep up with power draw, but it will get you a few hours.

For my personal needs of taking a small camera along with me for everything from snapshots to getting amazingly high quality video on the go, the ZV-E10 could not be more perfect. My big DSLR hasn't come out of my bag since I got the ZV-E10 and it probably won't. I stream virtual performances for a local community theater using OBS Studio, do headshots for the theater and wildlife photography (thanks to a longer zoom lens I got) and am starting up my own (very small) YouTube channel - all with the same camera. I could not possibly be happier. I can't possibly recommend it enough unless you're doing high quality 4K broadcast footage... and even then I'll bet the ZV-E10 is up for doing your B-roll at a minimum. You won't do better without spending quite a lot more money.

    Almost everything I wanted

So... why did I pick up the ZVE10? Wouldn't my phone camera be enough? Probably. But I wanted the ability to have a more professional setup for some creative content that I plan on recording and some vlogging on outings, and hopefully international traveling in the future. It also had to be portable, light, and customizable.

It had been a while since I had a dedicated camera for photos and videos; the last was an old DSLR a few years ago that I had to sell to pay for school supplies. So when the ZVE10 came out, I knew that I had to give it a try and compare it to the ZV1.

So wait... hold up... you have the ZV1 at hand and wanted the ZVE10 too? Why? To give you a solid answer, I wanted to compare the use cases when choosing one over the other and why the ZVE10 won me over. Here's my breakdown of the ZVE10 as someone "new" to the mirrorless camera scene:

    ------------------------------------------

    PRO:

    ------------------------------------------

    - Product showcase setting: probably the biggest game-changer against all other cameras out there. Once turned on, the camera can automatically change focus from the subject to the closer object, which was always the issue with other cameras. This was a feature that I desperately needed when doing creative content and needed to showcase the tools I was using.

    - Rotating 3" LCD touch screen: other cameras had a stop screen view which the dead cat would have blocked. It is perfect for taking high and low shots. I also like that the screen frame turns red to notify that it is recording

    - The color profile is top-notch

    - The kit lens (16-50mm) is a great starter lens for someone new to the camera world. honestly would probably be my default lens for now

    - E-Mount: Switching lenses is easy (although the lenses can end up being heavier than the camera body)

    - A much better grip than the ZV1

    - Dedicated ON/OFF switch (on the ZV1, it can be hidden when you have the dead cat on)

    - Better video processing

    - For the price point, the image quality is superb

    - Stills are great even though this is primarily for vlogging, I use the Sony E50mm/F1.8 OSS for up-close still and it's flawless

USB streaming (720p), great for streaming and conference calls

    - Clear Image Zoom

    - Dedicated background blurring button

    - Audio quality is crystal clear and even better with the dead cat to reduce wind noise when shooting outdoors

    - 3.5mm input jack for external mic and headphones for recording

    ------------------------------------------

    CONS:

    ------------------------------------------

    - No sensor stabilization

    - Rolling shutter could use a lot of improvement, not a big deal on a tripod, but if you're shooting video while walking or doing anything in action, you'll notice the difference during 4k. Which I've read is pretty common with CMOS sensor cameras, so it's nothing new

    - Camera menus are uninspiring (this is across the board with all cameras, so if you haven't used a DSLR before, it can get confusing)

    - No built-in flash would need a dedicated external flash for low-light settings.

    - No electronic viewfinder

    - LCD touchscreen has very limiting functions

    - No, rear lens cap for kit lens or body cap (probably my biggest grip in terms of hardware provided)

    ------------------------------------------

    External gear I recommend getting:

    ------------------------------------------

    - Sony GP-VPT2BT Bluetooth Shooting Grip with Wireless Remote Commander. Although the grip on the ZVE10 is a big improvement to the ZV1, the remote makes recording and shooting a lot easier. I love that it is also a tripod and easy to carry.

    - As for lenses, I'm still exploring but the kit lenses and Sony E50mm/F1.8 OSS are pretty good to start

So that's all great and all, but what's the final verdict? Personally, as I plan to expand in this field, learning about the full capabilities, changing lenses, and taking amazing stills, the ZVE10 is perfect for me. But if I wanted something more pocketable for travel, I'd probably take the ZV1.

Overall, if I had to sum up, if Sony ZV1 and Sony a6100 had a child, ZVE10 would be it.

Great Camera for Beginners and Experienced Alike!

This is a very difficult review to write. Not because the Sony Alpha ZV-E10 Mirrorless Vlog Camera with 16-50mm Lens is a poor camera, (it most certainly is NOT a poor camera), but because I am having difficulty in determining from which angle I want to approach this review…from that of a vlogger, (which is why I got it), or from the view of a photographer, (which was the secondary reason I jumped at the opportunity to get this camera). Since I was looking for a vlog camera, I will write the review from that perspective. But since vlogging does indeed involve photography (and I am not a professional photographer in any sense of the word), there will be times the worlds of vlogging and photography intersect in this review.

Out of the box, the ZV-E10 comes with the “E PZ” 16-50mm F3.5-5.6 OSS zoom lens, which is a Sony e-mount lens, AC adapter, rechargeable battery, shoulder strap, and a windscreen. The ZV-E10 is an interchangeable lens camera. I have to point out that I also got the Sony Vlogger Kit and the Sony SEL50F18 E50mm, F1.8 OSS lens.

To be quite frank, like most vloggers I was comfortable with using my smart phone as the primary means to film vlog videos. After all, a selfie-stick and it’s show time. But I soon came to realize how extremely limited my options were with that type of setup. So when I began to explore the ZV-E10, I was a bit intimidated. This is not a one-setting-does-it-all camera. But Sony put together an absolutely amazing online PDF user’s manual which made the learning curve quite minimal. In fact, it is to their credit that they were quite intuitive to the many questions users might have, and subsequently supplied quite an easy-to-search, easy-to-understand format. They deserve 10 stars for this alone.

I spent the first evening just going through the menu options, and test shooting a few photos to get a feel of the camera. The first thing I noticed was how easy it is to switch from still photos to video mode… just a push of a button. There are over 30 different menu screens with tons of options to choose from on each menu item. But again, anticipating that many beginners would purchase this camera, there is what they call “Intelligent Auto” shooting mode which does all the work for you. In my experimentation with the ZV-E10, I found this mode was able to handle 90% of all my shooting needs. With a quick read of the appropriate section in the aforementioned user’s manual, it was quite straightforward to get through the other 10%.

Now this leads me to this point. Because the ZV-E10 is not a simple cell phone vlogging tool, it would have been foolish to get it for a simple point-and-shoot vlogging camera with the intention of doing all the work later using a computer software program. This is a sophisticated camera, and it is well worth ALL the effort to learn the different controls and settings to take care of all the “hard work” upfront.

Even though I spent the first evening exploring the camera, I felt compelled to go outside and take a few night shots. I had heard that the ZV-E10 is a very good low-light camera, and I wanted to see what it can do. I live in a rural setting with very little light pollution, and I have been amazed at the number of stars I have been able to see with the naked eye. But nothing prepared me for what I was about to experience with the ZV-E10! As you can see by the photos, well, they tell all the story that needs to be told! I was dumbfounded and amazed by this camera’s ability. And this is a good spot to point out that the Sony ZV-E10 is a 4K camera, which makes for extraordinary results!

The next day I decided to try it out in the brightness of a sunny day. Using several of the camera settings, I was again amazed at the clarity and brilliance of the ZV-E10’s performance.

But for the important part (to me)…the vlogging aspect. As I stated earlier, I also got the Sony Vlogging Kit as well as the additional lens…both of which I put to use. The vlogging kit comes with a wireless remote shooting grip (as well as a 64GB memory card). This was quite handy since the ZV-E10 itself does not come with any memory card at all. The shooting grip has five function controls: 1. Photo mode 2. Movie mode 3. Background Defocus mode 4. Zoom mode, and 5. Lock mode. The lock mode is a lifesaver as it keeps you from inadvertently messing up a shot by switching settings…that is, once you have the remote set, you lock the settings, and you’re ready to shoot. IMPORTANT: The shooting grip connects to the camera via Bluetooth. In order to set it up, you have to go through a pairing process. I was unable to get the two to connect, and was really super disappointed that Sony would produce such a poorly designed device. BUT THEN…after CAREFULLY rereading the instructions, I discovered you must first go to the second screen of the “Network” menu and make sure the “Bluetooth Rmt Ctrl” is set to “On.” Worked like a charm after that!

As I walked around downtown, doing test vlogs, I intentionally put myself in various situations. From crowded stores and restaurants to the quietness of a bookstore. I was a bit concerned about the background noise that might be heard when I was recording in the crowded situations, and was looking forward to reviewing these when I got home. I also experimented with several different lighting scenarios from full outside sun to low-light interior settings. I made full use of the shooting grip during these practice situations. Here is what I discovered.

In every single scene, the video was extraordinary. This is indeed a truly versatile low-light camera. Without making any adjustments (using Intelligent Auto mode), I was able to make sudden changes in different lighting conditions with very few adverse affects on the video quality. There was a bit of noticeable transition as I went from bright outside to low-light interior and vice-versa, but it would be the same for any camera under similar conditions, so this is most certainly not a negative. One of the neatest things (IMHO) is what they call “Product Showcase Setting.” This lets you hold up a product you are showcasing and it automatically focuses on the product while defocusing the background. This lets you NOT worry about stopping and having to focus on the product and then refocus on yourself. It worked in every single instance.

The audio (using only the onboard microphone) was at times difficult to make out, but this was only in those situations where there was a tremendous amount of background noise and chatter. I was still able to hear my own voice, but not as clearly as I could under low-noise locations. The supplied wind filter worked quite well and eliminated almost all wind noise. However, I was surprised that any time I used the “Zoom” function while recording video, it was distractingly noticeable, and interfered with the main audio. It made the lens sound clunky.

I was able to connect the audio to my podcast recorder and craft some crazy great sound effects as well as amazing overall sound quality.

The next “test” came with the SEL50F18 E50mm, F1.8 OSS lens. I was able to quickly and effortlessly change lenses on the ZV-E10. Just a push of the button, a little twist, and off comes the lens. Then line up the dots (white dot on the lens to the white dot on the camera body), snap into place, a quick twist and it’s ready to go. How truly easy changing lenses on this camera turned out to be! Again, thank you, Sony!

    The Final Analysis:

Out of the box, the Sony ZV-E10 is ready to go, UNLESS you don’t have an appropriate memory card, then you will have to buy one. There is no onboard memory storage. When the camera is set to Intelligent Auto mode, you truly are ready to go. I SERIOUSLY recommend the Sony Vlogger Kit to make vlogging a lot easier. Although the camera does have image stabilization, stepping up and down curbs, stairs, and rocky terrain does tax this ability a bit which is greatly amplified when simply holding the camera in your hand, and not using the shooting grip included with the vlogger kit. If you are going to invest in the ZV-E10, then by all means spend a little extra and get the Vlogger Kit.

The Intelligent Auto mode is not the answer for ALL shooting conditions, so you absolutely must become familiar with at least the basic focusing functions of the camera, such as ISO settings, f-stops, etc. There is a small learning curve to understanding how these settings affect shots, but as I said earlier, the results are well-worth the effort. I emphasize this as there were a few instances when the Intelligent Auto actually interfered with a good shot, especially in nighttime shooting. But I was able to overcome this by being able to make manual adjustments to the camera settings.

    PROS:

    4K

    Bluetooth enabled

    Online Tutorial

    Intelligent Auto

    Sound clarity

    Relatively easy learning curve

    Adjustable viewing screen

    Interchangeable lenses

Available accessories (like the Vloggers Kit)

All the available online videos and other help resources

    Lightweight design

The ability to make changes to the camera setup to handle any and all shooting conditions

    Amazing professional-like results

The ability to connect to other devices while shooting.

    CONS:

    No supplied memory card

Super noisy telephoto adjustment clearly picked up by audio

The Bluetooth setup procedure was a bit vague, creating a lot of frustration

No included software to work with the photos and videos

Would I recommend the Sony ZV-E10? A resounding, absolutely positive YES! Yes! Yes! Yes!

I cannot stress what a remarkable camera the ZV-E10 is. For anyone wanting to take their vlogging talents to the next several levels, this is THE camera to buy.

    A modern a6100

There are no dials, but a single button for photo, video and S&O. It takes a little bit to get used to, but once you do, it's totally fine to get into the manual modes and controls. The photo quality is spot on, have yet to try out the video. I wanted to pick this up for the articulating screen (still has the 3 second self timer when in "selfie-mode" for pictures which I really like), the usb c, unlimited record time with software stabilization in-post using metadata. Overall, very happy with the quality, fit and finish of the camera. Would highly recommend for anyone looking for a modern a6100 hybrid.

    LED Color Concern

I love all the features this light comes with. Is such a great floodlight and camera. The looks are good. Easy installation but I'm giving it 3/5 because a big down for me was when the lights turn on and I saw that the LED lights are Yellow... At this price tag and for what they advertise on the pictures I tought that the LED light was going to be White. Maybe I did not read something that says so about the lights, but if you're like me and rather White LED over Yellow LED, heads up you'll be getting Yellow LED.

    Works fine...too much plastic

I've only had it up a few week. I replaced a first generation unit that I moved to the backyard. Works fine but I'm really disappointed with all the plastic. The first one felt like a quality metal unit. This one is all plastic and definitely doesn't have that quality feel for this price point.

    So far so good

So far so good. I got this because our car got egged. We’ve seen all kinds of wildlife and have also caught someone trying to brake into our car. At the very least it makes us aware of what goes on in front of our house. We’ll probably get another for our backyard.

    Squirrels are Fun

Works great, enough light to cover my entire driveway, and the sensor is big enough to pick up my neighbors drive way as they’re older in case of an emergency. It’s also amazing because my father is the only one with access to it currently and a neighborhood squirrel is having a blast setting it off on him 20 times a day while at work.

    Mission Impossible: 3D Motion

Ring announced that this came out and I got excited specifically about the 3D motion. Turns out it's pretty killer. It really doesn't have a day to day process other than showing friends how creepy technology is. I feel like this type of tech would be seen in a Mission Impossible movie. Compared to other brands like Nest (which I previously owned), I will say that Nest has a better User Interface where Ring feels a little more clunky (in comparison). Other than the basic UI, I think Ring is a great company and this particular product is/has been great.

    Inexpensive and it shows

This is a cheap video camera. If cost is your primary concern, this is a good choice it has many features you won't find in cameras costing hundreds of dollars more. The ability to pan the camera left and right, up and down is fantastic and unparalleled at this price point.

Another plus for cheapskates is that the fee for annual cloud storage and value added services like person/animal/package detection is less than some services charge per month.

Its biggest drawback though is the real reason you buy the camera. Video is soft, focus isn't the best. The camera is advertised as a color camera, but only in very well-lit spaces. Lose a few lumens and the camera switches to black and white.

A security camera which can't be used to identify an intruder doesn't provide much security.

    Description

The Nextbase 320XR and Rear Window Camera is the ideal solution for all-around protection on the roads in full HD quality. The front cam captures every detail in 1080p full HD at 30fps, with the aid of a 140° wide viewing angle. It utilizes the latest 2.5" screen with IPS technology for easy menu selection and playback. The 320XR uses the exclusive Click&Go PRO mount with integrated neodymium magnetic power connectors for easy installation and removal using just one hand. The 320XR Rear Window Camera connects to your front facing Dash Cam via a supplied 6.5m cable. It fits directly to your rear window with an easy to install self-adhesive pad. The magnetic, adjustable fixture means that it's suitable for angled windows in cars or more vertical van windows. Far better than it's price and specs

Nextbase 320XR is a straight forward and rearview setup to record your driving and those that may come in contact with you. Great HD quality video and a nice microphone that hears all music and voice interactions inside the vehicle. No GPS or WiFi, but just like suction cup mounts. You don't need it.

Setup is quick and easy. Nice sticky pads and magnets to hold cameras in place securely (1 spare sticky pad for the main camera is included). Charge camera for a few hours. Run the wires by hiding them in the vehicle trim with included tool. Insert SD card up to 128GB (not included), format when camera asks. Set up time and date stamp if you want. Choose to record audio with video, or not. Go for a drive! 20-40 minutes and it's installed, if you choose to hide the wires.

Day and night image quality is far better than expected for only being 1080 HD quality. Colors might be a bit over saturated. Playback on my big tv. Recordings are extremely clean and even license plates can be read at about 10-15+ ft. Just hit pause anywhere during playback and you get photo quality images on every second of video. Videos are MP4 file format that almost all media players can play. NextBase does offer a nice player for free download if you need one. I included a few sample images without license plates. While these are pictures from my phone of my tv...you should still be able to see how great the images are with this dashcam.

For those technically challenged. Setup and operation is easy. You won't need a technician or tech savvy grandchild to use this dashcam. High quality images that can be played back almost anywhere and easily shared with insurance or social media. There is even a big lock/record video button to save recordings right under the screen. And if you are curious about SD cards. I used a Samsung High Endurance 32GB card that looks to copy about 4 total hours of front and rear video (in 1, 2 or my personal choice, 3 minute segments). So, if you have a 1 hour round trip commute. 32GB card should last 4 days before rewriting the old videos.

Tips I would like to add:

Day 1: Charge the camera like it says to. I didn't and the rear camera didn't record video on the first drive to work. I think not charging first is why. All cameras have been fine ever since.

Day 1: Choose to record audio with video. Doing so might be embarrassing if you sing along as you drive. But, in case of an incident (crash, traffic stop). You can push the lock recording button then speak/narrate to the camera and record what the camera may not be able to see like license plate info and other things to either side of the cameras view. It helps for later playback and could be useful for more than just you.

And remember. This will record everyone's bad driving...including yours!

    They keep getting Better

This is my third dash cam, first was about 5yrs ago, had 640x320 video capture, it was dark, at night, really pretty useless. My last was HD but it required lot's of special software to view what was on it (and the mfg never updated it). Which is why I have this unit.

It remarkably can record full HD from the front and back camera at the same time. Compared to my back up camera its like looking out a picture window, and the higher view lets me see so much more clearly, combine this with my back up cam it's like having a 3d view of what behind me. Really helpful when backing into a parking spot.

The main unit has a wide field of view on a very clear screen, you can easily take the unit down to inspect what you've captured. You can set the camera to record in increments of 1,2 or 3 minutes; this is so much better when reviewing video. Having to scroll through 30-40m of video makes it much more easy to find something; on my other units this was such a pain. Organization by minute is much smarter and all (optionally) can have time stamps on them. There are many other set up options including over or under exposed, (I found normal fine for daylight), if I drove more at night I might want it slightly over exposed. You can choose if you want to record audio or not (you can record more is no audio). You can choose the resolution, but full HD is so much better and clearer than SD video. In recording front and rear at the same time I did not notice any frame droppage. As advised I used a new V3 Class 10, 128GB SDcard.

Installation will obviously vary based on your vehicle, I installed in a 2016 Nissan Maxima, the front cord was harder to hide then the rear cord. The front had about 1' extra cable, and the rear had about 30" extra, that was easily tucked away and hidden in a corner area. Both front and rear cameras mount with magnets. This makes re-alinging the rear camera very easy. My install only took about 15m. The provide a little "tuck" tool to help push to hide the cable in the cracks. All told it was pretty easy, but I've done this before, and get smarter with each install.

The biggest step forward, is how easy it its to review the video on the unit, I do wish it had a touch screen, as the little buttons on the side take some getting used to. But this is the best dashcam I've had, it's camera is excellent, in low light, the picture looks to be monochrome, but very well illuminated. An daylight or night you can read license plates at a distance of about 10 feet. Nextbase has software that allows you to post video segments on line (not sure I'll ever use it).

Easy Install, HQ video day & night and front and rear. Just wat I was looking for, well done, recommended!

    Front and rear protection

Having a dash cam gives you piece of mind and security to the unforeseen events that can happen on a daily basis. This is my second Nextbase dash cam and I really like the addition of physical buttons on this one. Though the touch screen on my first one has served me well, the small screen can be challenging at times. On the specs front, both front and rear cameras record 1080p @ 30fps and have a 2.12M pixel sensor front and .9 rear. The front has a 140 degree field of view with a 1.6 aperture while the rear is 30 and 2.5. The rear camera comes with a nice magnetic mount that makes adjustments easy, it also comes with an extra long cable that was more than sufficient for a full size four door car. When connecting the rear camera to the front, you have to make sure the front is completely powered off, you do this by holding the power button down for about 10 seconds. You’ll know it’s connected when you see the rear camera overlay on the dash cam screen. The dash cam supports up to a 128GB micro sd card, though one is not included. To view the recorded video you have to remove the SD card and use a computer. It would be nice if it had the ability to view it on your phone, this is a feature I would like to see work it’s way down from the more expensive models. Overall it’s a great option from a company you can rely on for a quality dash cam.

Great Basic Camera, 1080p Image Quality Meh

With over 7 years of dash cam usage, I have come to love to security they provide in cases of accidents, road debris, or even theft. I believe everyone should have one to protect themselves against possible fraudulent activities or just as objective evidence in any situation. With a growing number of cameras offering expanded features available this one goes back to the basics of a camera(s) to record to an SD card. The Nextbase 320XR is a good dual dash cam kit but leaves something to be desired in terms of picture quality.

Setup: Grab and High Quality Micro SD Card and Go!

Setting up the 320XR was very simple. With no Wi-Fi or app compatibility it is basically making sure the camera is up to date from the Nextbase website, installing the camera in the car, and drive! The camera has nice physical buttons to navigate the menus and a nice screen size which makes it easy to setup.

Usage: 1080p Footage Works. Cannot Capture Finer Details.

The camera comes with only double sided tape mounts unlike some of Nextbases other camera kits which include a suction cup. After attaching the mount to the car, this camera uses their same magnetic attachment for power and camera. It works well with this camera and holds the camera steady over bumps as this camera does not have any image stabilization. The camera uses a USB C port on the side of the camera to connect the rear camera. The rear camera then uses a small 8” or so USB C to Mini Jack dongle to connect the rear camera. Seems a little odd but it works I suppose.

When you compare the footage side by side with a QHD or 4K Dash Cam you really see the difference of 1080p. Personally, after owning and using a QHD and 4K in my cars I wouldn’t want anything less at this point. The price point of QHD over 1080p is trivial if you are willing to look at other name brands. I have posted a couple sample images to compare 1600p vs 1080p side by side.

Parking Mode: Love the Built in Battery.

One feature I really like from these Nextbase cams is the small built in battery. This enables the camera to use it for parking mode or small intermittent power loss situations. So if you want approx. 15 minutes of parking mode (Uses G Sensor to turn on) then this camera does need to be hardwired for it to turn on and record for short clips of about 30 seconds until it was to run out. Very useful compared to other cameras.

    Final Thoughts: Better than Nothing.

The Nextbase 320XR provides overall car protection at an affordable price point. This is one of the cheapest dual camera cams on the market however at a mere 1080p resolution. The built in battery is great for extra protection in case of hit and run in a parking lot. Just remember there is no app, GPS, or smart functions of this camera so each time you want footage it will require taking the SD card out.

    Pros:

    - Great Microphone Quality

    - Parking Mode with Built in Battery (For short periods of time between charges)

    - Quick Startup Time

    - Software Updates via SD Card

    - Physical Buttons, Easy to Control

    Cons:

    - Dual 1080p Resolution at 30fps. Image Seems Dark.

    - Adhesive Only Mount Type

    - Poor Placement of Nextbase Logo on Image/Videos (Cannot Remove?)

    Everyday Peace of Mind

    Why a dash cam?

Insurance Purposes – in the event of a collision to ascertain fault

Avoid Fraud – Pedestrian engineering an “accident” on purpose

Keep car safe – Record events when parked and not with your vehicle.

The Nextbase 320XR, helps in all the above categories.

You can mount on your windshield and utilize the included Cigarette Lighter Adapter to supply power or use an optional hard wire cord to wire to direct 12V vehicle power.I purchased the optional hard wire kit to avoid having the power cord hanging in my field of view etc.

Once I installed the front camera and mounted the rear camera (all the while hiding the wires) I was ready to go.

I inserted the Micro SD card and formatted it right away to insure compatibility with the Nextbase 320XR.

You are able to chose video quality from 1080P and 720P, I chose 1080P. Another choice is video clip length, I went with the longest which is 3 minutes.

Accessing the menu I chose to enable “Parking Mode” which powers the camera down to its bare minimum power consumption enabling the Nextbase 320XR to automatically turn on in the event the camera detects physical movement of your car ie: someone hits it while parked and it will automatically record a clip of what transpired.

Video quality from both the front and rear cameras is great and operation is what you’d expect from a dash cam, and that very simply is to record your every driving moment automatically with ease.

If you need a dash cam, the Nextbase 320XR is a fantastic choice.

Easy to install and simple to use front & rear das

I like this 320xr front and rear dashcam kit. It's simple to install and get setup and working. The rear cam has a 18' keyed cable that plugs into the front cam, and connects to the mount magnetically. Both cams record in either 1080p or 720p, but no combination of both.

The video quality Is very clear whether day or night footage. I'm currently using this setup with 256gb micro sd card for storage. The front cam can either be mounted via suction cup or 3m double sided tape. I went the hard wire kit route, as I wanted to take advantage of the cams Park Feature.

These cams have no Bluetooth or wifi built in so no smartphone features, like most of Nextbases other cams offer. So to review footage on you sd card, you'll have to remove the sd card and insert it into a laptop or desktop, which is a pain.

I really wish this was capable of using the smartphone app. My other complaint is I wish the rear mount had a steadier mount like the front vs magnetic. But, all in all this is a nice setup for the cost, I would reccomend this setup to anyone on the fence.

    Front and rear protection

Having a dash cam is cheap protection against unforeseen events that can happen on the road. This is my second Nextbase dash cam and I like that this one has physical hardware buttons instead of the touch screen. Though the touch screen on my other model has served me well, on smaller devices I find the physical buttons a littler easier to live with. The specs for both the front and rear cameras are 1080p @ 30fps, 2.12m pixel and .9m pixel censor resolution, a 1.6 and 2.5 aperture and 140 and 30 degree angle. The rear camera has a nice adjustable magnetic mount, the cable that comes with it should be long enough for even the biggest vehicle as I had plenty for a large sedan. When connecting the rear camera you must make sure the front is completely off, you do this by holding down the power button for probably 10 seconds. You’ll know it’s not connected properly if you don’t see the rear camera overlay on the dash cam screen. The dash cam supports up to 128gb SD card and does not include one in the box. The only thing I wish this had was the ability to view the videos from the dash cam on your phone. When you want or need to view them you have to remove the SD card and use a computer. I understand this feature is generally reserved for the higher end models, but it would be nice if it starts making its way down to the lower tier. It’s an overall great dash cam that protects you front and rear from a brand you can depend on.

    Simple, Non-destructive Setup

This is the first dashcam I've ever owned, yet it was simple enough to setup and wire discreetly in my car all on my own.

The 320XR works great: It boots up fairly quickly and records everything - front, back and whatever sound is within the car.

Recordings are made in 3 minute spans at 1920x1080 AAC/H.264, so they're not what I would consider to be highly detailed, although they definitely capture the action in day, night and rainy drives. I have included some screenshots, but the recordings are clearer in video format.

One other thing to note: The unit does not come with a memory card, so you'll have to buy one. In order to support the responsive recording requirements, the microSD card has to have U3 speeds - and the unit will nag you about this if it's not there.

Nostalgia for me, Novelty for my kids

This Polaroid really brings me back to the time these were extremely popular and used my families across the US to capture their favorite moments.

The build quality and quirky design are amazingly great and my kids instantly wanted to touch and play with it. At nearly $2 per picture however, I wasn’t going to just give them free access to it without some supervision!!!

That’s really the only negative in my opinion that will prevent me from using this more but it will definitely come with us on family trips to capture and immediately develop some pictures.

Lastly, make sure to place the pictures face down for a outside 15 mins after taking the pictures while they develop or they will come out dark. Fanning them like the old ones doesn’t work to speed up development. Also while the camera does have a flash, good natural light photos will turn out out the best.

Great blast from the past camera that will capture another generation of family moments!!!

Connecting to the app process doesn’t get notice at all. In this aspect, as soon as download the app, and turn on bluetooth from the camera, immediate get connected without having to do the pre connection via bluetooth function from the phone.

However, the use of the application feels bit odd as there seems to be lot of cool functions but felt alike lost. The application has function for self portrait, light painting, manual, self timer, double exposure, aperture, tripod, under the region My Now +. But to understand how it work each of them need multiple times trial and error process. For instance for portrait, it has indicator of if too close or too far, too dark and so on. I was not able to find when it is ready in first trial and gave up to use the shutter button from the camera.

The camera itself I find cool and the fact that it can get connected and controlled via mobile phone makes greater imagination. But actually using the application it takes some time of usage at least from my end.

Classic Camera with Cool Creativity Boosters

    TLDR:

    (that’s Too Long, Didn’t Read)

Everything you love about instant analog photography plus some useful creativity tools in an app.

    Pros:

    * Simple controls.

    * Easy onboard control for basic adjustments.

    * Light and easy to carry.

    * Classic styling with snazzy stripes.

    Cons:

    * Steep learning curve if your first experience with analog instant photography.

    * Expensive per-shot costs.

    Summary:

I’ve been a hobby level digital photographer for about 30 years. My first digital camera was a Casio with a now-laughable 320x240 resolution. I loved the benefits of a nearly Infinite camera roll and instant reviews of my shots. Over the years, digital camera resolution and quality has drastically improved, but at the end of the day, a digital photograph is still just a digital copy.

Long before digital cameras emerged, a Polaroid camera was the ONLY way to take a photo and see the results per-shot without having to develop an entire roll. Polaroids were cool before instant digital photography was available. I applaud Polaroid for keeping instant analog photography alive! Today, its advantages are mostly as a unique creative tool.

The Polaroid Now+ is yet another extension of the groundbreaking Polaroid camera for creators. The “+” part mainly offers a BTLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) connection with an app on your phone. This type of connection doesn’t require pairing so it’s fast and easy to use. The app enables a lot of cool creative tools like a remote shutter, full manual controls, double-exposure and light painting that basically is a really long exposure so you can “draw” with the light from your phone (or a flashlight, etc.).

The is a nice addition, but you can also do a lot without it. There are only four buttons on the actual camera but they allow you to do a lot of stuff fairly easily. The shutter and power buttons basically do what you’d expect of them. The Flash button doubles not only to turn the flash off for the next photo or until the next power cycle but can also temporarily adjust the camera’s exposure to “more”, “normal” or “less.” This model now has a “+” button on the front which is used to set a self-timer, start a double exposure mode or do whatever favorite mode you assigned from the app. You can also hold that “+” button while turning the camera on to get a more detailed battery level reading on the single-digit display.

Being used to instant digital photography, most of my first 8 photos did not come out well. Polaroids really love light and a steady hand. For me, getting used to analog instant photography has been a steep learning curve but one that I’m sure will pay off with creative results that are not easy to match with a now-ubiquitous digital camera.

I really enjoy the classic styling of this camera and enjoy the colorful stripes on the front. The eyepiece is rubberized for comfort and the provided shoulder straps are easily removable if you need to do so. There’s a tripod mount on the bottom for steadier shots and the supplied creative lenses add some flair to your photos; although they are a tad cumbersome to store in the provided canvas roll which does not have a way to clip it to anything. I especially liked the effects of the Starburst filter but the others have uses as well.

If you’re used to Polaroid photography and are looking for more tools to express your creativity, this camera will not let you down. If you’re new to analog instant photography, you might want to buy a few extra packs of film to go with your camera so you can experiment and get used to the differences of shooting analog. Either way, you won’t be disappointed in this medium where each photo is a unique one-of-a-kind.

    Nice update to the original

This is a modern version of the original camera. Looks and feels just like it. The upgrades are a nice touch. It's instant film again. The camera is easy to use, just charge, open up the bottom front and drop in film. After that you can just start taking pictures. The view finder has nothing in it, just point and shoot. Flash works automatically if on. After the picture comes out, it takes around 15 minutes to develop. So, kids need some patience. The pictures come out nice, just make sure you have enough light.

The Bluetooth functions add some more capabilities to the camera. With Bluetooth pairing and the Polaroid App you get, Remote picture taking, time delayed picture taking, Double Exposure pictures, Aperture changes, tripod setting, portrait setting, Light painting (longer shutter open), and a manual setting (aperture and shutter). All can help you make better pictures.

One issue with using any of the included colored lens or the advanced settings is the view finder. It’s not connected to anything in the camera, so if you use the sunburst lens, clear center with tinted around the outside, you can only guess if you have the subject in the right spot. The film is expensive, but it’s twice as big as the smaller instant cameras. You only get 8 pictures per tray. The camera can use 600 and i-Type film. It takes 15 minutes to fully develop. The charger is exposed, no cover, so don’t get it water near it. Overall, it’s a fun easy to use camera with film coming out instantly.

    Has Potential

As a Polaroid camera, it does exactly what you would expect from a polaroid camera in terms of quality and usage. It does have 21st-century technology to go with it also, but it's not much.

To me, using the buttons on the camera could be confusing at times. "How do I set a timer?" "How do I set double exposure?" And even though there is a paper guide you wouldn't want to haul it around with you. What makes this process simpler is the phone application because you can set your options and mode from there. Beyond that, the technology part ends there.

At the very least it was instantly paired. I didn't have to touch my Bluetooth settings and I never lost connection. But if you ever memorize the buttons and corresponding light modes the app becomes pointless. I'm not sure what hardware limitations there are for Polaroid technology but I would love to see more functionality. How cool would it be to make the printing portion optional and you're suddenly able to take digital, uploadable shots all the time with this camera?! I'm sure and I'm hoping the polaroid team has more ideas for the future.

The flash is necessary for photos and blinding. After your shot, you will see spots in your eyes ten minutes later. Without it, the pictures will come out unrecognizable and poor. Granted, I only took the photos inside my room next to a lamp yet it still struggled to pick up light. And the areas where the picture was lit up it was over-exposed. The quality just wasn't there. The quality of these photos is something you would expect from the 80s or earlier, which is disappointing coming from a modern take on this camera technology.

I know Poloraid has made smaller versions of these cameras and I haven't tried them, but this one, in particular, is bulky.

Overall, I think the best use case for this camera would be to take photos of a person or object outside.

Lastly, the film is pricey. I did want to try all the filters included but when you think about it, it's essentially $2 per shot. And for me, to slap on any of the filters to see what it looks like is not worth $2.

To wrap this all up you must think I hate this thing. I hate that it was not executed properly. I hate that it's expensive. The idea behind it is great. The first photo I took immediately took me back to my childhood. I immediately imagined it being the 90s again and my mom handing me all the photos we just developed. Except our point and shoot took better photos, was cheaper and the film was cheaper, by a factor of 10x cheaper. This camera has the power to create great experiences and unearth old ones, and it's almost there.

Nostalgia with a boost in tech and cost.

This is a perfect gift for someone with an artistic itch and wants to get the Polaroid experience of taking and printing photos. Although the process isn’t identical, it’s very close and this unit is packed with more features than any model from the old days had.

The first feature that sticks out is this lens! It’s huge compared to the original cameras this is based on. The flash on this is large as well but unfortunately taking photos with this will require a lot of light. More than what this provides normally. It works so much better in a lot of sunlight or plenty of indoor lighting. As with any new camera, or printer for that matter, it takes several photos to be able to dial it in and get a feel for it. So, if you are committed or getting this as a gift, I would definitely recommend getting extra film for it.

Additional features available through the app are also something you certainly won’t find on the models of yesteryear. Which makes this as fun to use for 90’s kids as it is for today’s kids who are itching for immediate and tangible media in the moment. And the construction definitely gives you some confidence in its structural integrity when being handed around in the presence of children who might be less careful with it.

    Fun novelty, but expensive

I was excited to try out a new generation of Polaroid cameras after growing up with one and loving it as a child. Sadly, I am disappointed considering the price of the camera and the film. It seems like they could do better on either the technology or the price. The camera definitely has some fun and impressive new features for the 21st Century. I can use my phone to control the shutter activation and speed, and add in special effects like writing with light, catching motion in the dark, or doing a double exposure where two images are superimposed on one another.

As someone who has embraced digital photography, it is intimidating to have to be extremely conservative with the number of images I take, then I have to wait 15 minutes to see if I even got the shot. Sadly, none of my shots so far have turned out great. I have tried multiple lighting environments and they either come out too dark or too light. One image didn't come out at all. I do not know if the film was bad, or my living room lights were not enough, even though the camera's automatic light sensor did not feel that it was necessary to fire the flash.

I at least like the app's ability to scan in the pictures. It does a great job of scanning the exposed film, while avoiding any glares, to show a great representation of the original image. I also like that the camera can be mounted on a tripod. This allows for some great low-light capabilities and group shots when the photographer wants to be in the picture. I can either set a timer through the app, or I can remotely activate the shutter with the simple push of a button in the app. Both are extremely easy to do. Speaking of which, the app effortlessly connects to the camera. Simply open the app and turn on the camera - that was it. I did not even have to pair the camera to the phone. They just knew they were meant for each other.

I am really mixed on whether I would recommend this to a friend. If they want the nostalgia of Polaroid, go for it. But, if they want the ability to instantly print good pictures, it's cheaper to buy a photo printer. Maybe my expectations were too high. I am disappointed, and I would not consider this a toy considering the price of the camera and the film.

    Memories from the good ol'days

    This is so cool!

First off let me cover the unboxing. It was pretty straight forward you get the camera, a small cube style pouch with some filters that you can put on if you want, and a charging cable along with a pouch that has 16 total poloroid pictures you can take. And a black fabric string to keep the camera around your neck if you want.

As far as buttons very easy to figure out, and adding the picture cartridge is pretty easy, I put it in the wrong way initially and it didn't close so i then put it correctly and it closed and spit out a cute message to let you know its ready to go.

So... Tomorrow we go to Universal and we plan on using most of our pictures then but so far its so fun! Colors are awesome and the app is very intuitive and easy to understand.

This is a great holiday gift for those that might not like technology or are afraid of it (like grandma/grandpa or parents) as it can be used with or without the app and is "old fashioned" but MUCH more improved and cooler then the really old fashioned versions. The pictures are incredibly clean and rich and so quick too! Love it very fun.

All in one, all I’ll need

I have the Max360c and I was contemplating the add on M1 dash cam until Escort came out with with this. Very pleased with this units fit and finish out of the box (nice packaging too for those that care). I am a long time Escort user and the the 360 technology has been the biggest game changer for me until now. The Drive Smarter App combined with the 360 detection and now integrated dash cam is a win for me and likely the last upgrade I’ll personally need. The Drive Smarter app (pics included) gave me a quick pre trip heads up real time. It’s functionality is similar to Waze in that it is shared with the network or community of users. I know there was mention of some app challenges but I’ve had none so far.

I’ve included some side by side images of my Max360c and new Maxcam360c for size comparison. Excited to use this on my many Seattle to Portland trips.

Great Detector, Okay Dash Cam, Horrible Execution

When this model was released, I just so happened to be in the market for a radar detector and possibly a dash cam, so this seemed like a no brainer. Upon unboxing, I was very impressed with the build quality of the unit and mounted it using a BlendMount. I was also impressed with the radar performance of the unit compared to the MAX 3 I had before. The lone issue i had with the radar detector portion was that the auto lockout feature never worked for me, even when I had it on all the correct settings. Not sure if i had a faulty unit, or the failed firmware updates caused this (I’ll explain these later in the review.) The dash cam performance is pretty solid for being an all-in-one unit, but I fear that dash cam technology will quickly progress in the future and leave this one behind.

Now, onto the dumpster fire that is the Drive Smarter app… It blows my mind that this product/app combo was released to the masses with seemingly non-existent product testing. I know that Escort is notorious for using early adopter customers for their quality control, but the Drive Smarter app is BAD, like laughably bad (as of October 2021). Connecting to the detector via Bluetooth usually takes about 15-30 seconds and then another 15-30 seconds just to pull up the device settings menu. Any changes made in the settings menu are laggy and don’t always take the first time, and sometimes even crash the app. Connecting to the dash cam via Wi-Fi is even worse. It takes at least 2-5 attempts to connect and the dashboard for videos almost never loads. Video quality through the app looked fine but once I downloaded them to my iPhone they were very pixelated. Transferring videos from the micro sd card to a computer is definitely the best way to transfer video files. Another major issue I had was trying to update the firmware through the Drive Smarter app. Anytime I would attempt to start the update, it would lag out and crash the app. I ended up bringing it inside and using an AC to DC converter to hookup to my home Wi-Fi and was able to update the firmware directly through the detector itself. Because of all these issues with the Drive Smarter app, I ended up using the Escort Live app for the remainder of my time with the unit.

Overall, the MAXcam 360c has a ton of potential. If Escort can get all of the issues with the Drive Smarter app resolved, this would be a solid combo unit. I chose not to wait for these issues to be resolved, and returned the MAXcam 360c. I ended up getting the Redline 360c and will use a separate dash cam instead.

    The best. Worth every penny.

The best radar detector I’ve owned. Period. Super long range, accurate, no false alarms. Upgraded from the 360c and love having the camera. Gives me piece of mind. Having two separate units was a no for me so this sleek design is awesome, love the look. Yes, I too had issues changing settings with the app but spoke to customer service and update is coming. Meanwhile it’s still awesome, and will be awesomer soon. Just gotta get around to finally hiding that cable now.

    Great radar detector!

I was very hesitant purchasing this based on other reviews but I followed the app set up instructions and within no time my radar detector started a software update, installed after a few minutes with no issues. I navigated thru the app to the detector settings and made a few changes, again no problems. I see no need to worry about wi-fi connections as the drive smarter app connects via bluetooth and makes all the updates from there. I have yet to attempt to download any videos from the traffic cam features and will update this review if I run into any issues. For the record I am running the Drive Smarter app on a iPhone 12 Max Pro if that makes any difference with complaints about the app not working.

    Returned after 4 days

I have 3 other Escort radar detectors, I LOVE them!!!. Thought I would upgrade to the newest of their current line, HUGE mistake!. After a couple calls to Escort customer service for just trying to get it to connect to the app I decided that this unit is garbage. It’s out of my car and been replaced by my ultra reliable Max 2 that was going to be replaced by this unit. Also, this unit has not alerted me 1 time in 3 days, and I know where false signals are on my way to work. I’ve also noticed the quality of the unit is not what you should expect from a detector that costs $800. My Max 2 has a much more quality feel about it, looks like I’m sticking with my Max 2 now.

Great until you try to update anything

I am a strong supporter of Escort products but this one has been released before it’s time. The concept is fantastic. However, most of the time the Apple not connect to the camera settings nor the unit. Also, all of my files for the camera can’t find GPS and have the wrong date and time. Great concept, poor execution
