A group of intrepid humans attempts to save the Earth from vicious extraterrestrials in this extremely popular science-fiction adventure. Borrowing liberally from War of the Worlds, Aliens, and every sci-fi invasion film inbetween, director Roland Emmerich and producer and co-writer Dean Devlin present a visually slick, fast-paced adventure filled with expensive special effects and large-scale action sequences. The story begins with the approach of a series of massive spaceships, which many on Earth greet with open arms, looking forward to the first contact with alien life. Unfortunately, these extraterrestrials have not come in peace, and they unleash powerful weapons that destroy most of the world's major cities. Thrown into chaos, the survivors struggle to band together and put up a last-ditch resistance in order to save the human race. As this is a Hollywood film, this effort is led by a group of scrappy Americans, including a computer genius who had foreseen the alien's evil intent (Jeff Goldblum), a hot-shot jet pilot (Will Smith), and the President of the United States (Bill Pullman). While some critics objected to the film's lack of originality and lapses in logic, the combination of grand visual spectacle and crowd-pleasing storytelling proved irresistible to audiences, resulting in an international smash hit.~Judd Blaise
This is one of my favorite movies of all time. I have owned it on DVD, Blu-Ray, and now in 4K. Several online reviews said the DTS:X soundtrack was worth it alone. They were not kidding. I cranked it up and felt like I was right in the middle of the fighter jet scenes. The picture is crisp and holds up well against many movies today. Buy it now if you do not already own it!
Jun 29, 2021 19:54In 1996, this film made over $817 million to become the 2nd highest grossing film of all-time at the time. It made Will Smith a A-lister and a bankable summer blockbuster star. The premise is pretty simple, aliens attack earth and earthlings fight back with all their might to survive. It is not a deep, thought-provoking film; but a fun blockbuster that a whole family or varied group can watch and enjoy without thinking to hard. It is not overly violent either. It had great visual effects, which helped the film earn an Academy Award for best visual effects. Even in 2015, the visual effects stand the test of time, like the Jurassic Park visual effects have stood the test of time.
Price: I paid $4.99, but in 2015 I think the most I would spend on this film is $7.99-$9.99. I got it for a great price point and it is worth it to by this if you see it on sale for cheap. If this set came loaded with special features or in a limited packaging I could justify paying more.
Packaging: The version I bought is just the standard blu-ray version. There are not a ton of special features, but there is more than just a trailer. The cool thing was the version I bought came with a special edition slipcover (cardboard cover) that is part of the Fox Icon slipcover wave.
Overall, happy with the purchase and happy with my experience buying from Best Buy.
Note: I would really give this film and packaging a 4.5 if possible. I reserve 5s for absolute masterpieces with great packaging that have an abundance of special features, like the Lord of the Rings extended edition set.
Feb 24, 2015 19:18This movie came out 20 years ago I enjoyed it then. Now I am enjoying it once again in 4K. The picture quality is beautiful highly recommend it includes two versions theatrical and extended cut.
Dec 05, 2016 12:33One of my favorite movies of all time. This Blu-ray version looks and sounds great! All of the extras are a plus!
Dec 07, 2016 15:52Great deals on some really good certain Movies! I would recommend people check out Best Buys DVD's as they have some movies that include a lot more special features than other stores!
Nov 15, 2015 17:30Been waiting for this! Best of all Best Buy had on sale when resurgence came out.
Nov 21, 2016 23:41Not so much a review on the movie, but the packaging. Best Buy has a horrible habit of putting a stupid 'Best Buy' sticker on the cardboard slip on their BluRay movies. Whatever sticker type they use is horrible as I can never get it off the case and am stuck looking at this nonsense.
Overall I'm happy with the $5 BR movie, but had I known Amazon was selling the exact same thing for the same price, and without the sticker, I would have used them.
Jan 06, 2017 19:24Good movie for the price. I remember watching it at the movies.
