Works as expected so far. Simply plug in the usb on the back of my PS5 and format. Then just download your library. Loads all my PS4 games pretty quickly and it's quiet.Sep 17, 2021 15:48
A must have for your Ps5! I’ve having my PS4 games in this thing to save space.Apr 09, 2021 17:14
Great drive for my PS5 and Xbox Serie X. The download speed is incredible for an external Hdd.Jul 05, 2021 09:24
So far so good! This hard-drive comes configured as an exFAT. It's a way to universally use this on different systems. **If you're ONLY using this just for windows!** I would do a fresh disk format, set it as default NTFS, and uncheck the quick format. It will take longer but eh, better to have a fresh disk that has no bad sectors!
I'm not doubting the integrity of this hard-drive. Reading all the reviews, I know it's an amazing hard-drive. It just saves you a headache in the end. Now it's time to watch this bar slowly crawl to the finish line!May 07, 2021 17:22
The 1TB on the PlayStation 5 is not a lot And being that COD Cold War takes up most of the space. I came across this for extra storage and is a great buy. Games I’ve bought on the PS4 automatically gets downloaded to to external HD and load the games fast. You can also move games from internal to this HD right now I have 18 PS4 games on there and have no issuesDec 25, 2020 19:31
I've been dealing with deleting games and making room for new on new ones on my PS5 for a year now, and I'm so glad I finally went out and bought this. It gives you peace of mind as you almost will never have to worry about storage space again. You can store PS5 and PS4 games on it, and can play PS4 games directly from the hard drive. To play PS5 games, you just need to move it back to the internal storage, but it's a quick process. The hard drive itself is very sleek and is actually much smaller than I thought. I had no issues setting it up at all with my PS5, it was very easy to. It's 100% worth the money and I highly recommend it.Oct 30, 2021 16:58
This external hard drive is an absolute must if you own a PS5. 5TBs of games including PS5 games can be installed on this. True, you have to move the PS5 games to your PS5 in order to play, but it gets rid of your PS5 running out of space so soon. Load times are really fast even on PS4 games and I haven't filled this thing up even after throwing some truly massive games on it (Avengers, COD, RDR2).Aug 22, 2021 08:54
Awesome little hard drive! It's small, compact, and rugged. So far I'm using this as a media back up for my NAS. I do a lot of traveling and keep this in my backpack so I can access movies and music whenever I want.
I would definitely purchase another to use for a gaming drive as well. Awesome build quality, especially for the price.Oct 29, 2021 18:47
The WD_Black™ P10 Game Drive gives your console or PC the performance-enhancing tools it needs to keep your competitive edge. Now, with WD_Black™ P10 Game Drive, you can drive your game the way you choose.
Purchased to be used with my PS5. After just 3 months my PS5 was already at space capacity. I bought this drive to store any/all PS4 (you can not yet save PS5 on it) games. It's plugged into the back USB of the console and storing/running games off of it is so efficient. There is barley any load time and or processing lag. Depending on the file size, I was able to save 35 average sized games (40GB average size) with room for about 10-12 more.Aug 19, 2021 07:14
Does exactly what it is designed to do. Currently using it to store ps4 titles to free up ps5 storage. It's possible to store ps5 games on here but you are unable to play them off the external drive (requires that you move it to the internal storage). That issue is unfortunate but no matter, this drive is great, compact, no noise, no complaints.Nov 05, 2021 15:46
Great for keeping your ps4 games on to palsy on ps5Oct 15, 2021 15:51
Great add on for the ps5. Brought all my ps4 games over to it. Plenty of storage.Sep 04, 2021 11:54
No issues with it so far. When you download a ps4 game in the PS5 it’ll go straight to this drive which I loveJun 25, 2021 21:58
Love it. Ive finally gotten to download all the games I have saved on my ps plus account. Best part of all this is plug and play. DON'T be fooled by those that have a PS Logo. This 1 does the Job!Sep 10, 2021 23:42
Works great with my ps5 for ps4 games, has been working like a charm so far!Nov 05, 2021 15:33
Got this for my PS5 since the internal storage is only able to hold a handful of games at once. SO far its done exactly what I need. No issues at all.Jul 14, 2021 14:08
Grow your collection of 4K games on this WD External USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive for PS4. The gaming drive's large capacity provides enough room for all your favorite PS4 games, DLC and patches. An included USB 3.0 cable allows you to connect directly to a PlayStation 4/4 Pro console. The sleek, portable design of the drive lets you share your games with friends.
Let me start by saying have a first wave ps4, with 500GB hard drive. And modern warfare has basically been holding my hard drive hostage for the last year. I’ve had do delete all my games except 1 other because MW’s file is so large. I even had 4 games I hadn’t even opened yet because I could not fit any more with my current 500GB.
I wasn’t quite sure how to use an external HD, but with a search on YouTube I found out all I needed to know, and I was set on getting one. I picked this up on sale for $59.99, And so far it’s been worth every penny. I’ve had it for just short of a month now it works perfectly with my system. I’ve got 7 games on it and still have 1.70 TB of free space on it. I will probably never fill this. I only regret not getting it sooner. Side note - You cannot unplug it from the system until you “eject” it from within the system menus. It will risk damaging your files.Dec 18, 2020 21:16
This is a fairly small package barely thicker than a phone but wider. One thing to note that it can run up to 35 mbps when transferring files from my (slow) Celeron computer with a 7200 rpm hard drive. Likewise it is compatible with the PS 4 but compatibility with the X Box remains to be seen. At two tb this disk drive is fairly sufficient to store 50 video games or lots of photos though there is a much bigger model at 4 tb. Suffice to say 2tb is more than enough for me. And from what I’ve gathered the hdd is non-standard meaning you can’t take it apart and use it on your computer. There’s not much anymore to describe this nice package except that it does the job well and works as advertised. And given the reputation of Western Digital, this hdd is highly recommended for other users as well and is not limited to gamers.Nov 12, 2018 22:24
After doing a lot of research I decided to buy the WD and Iam not disappointed.Dec 25, 2020 18:28
It was easy to use and super easy to install, would but again.Feb 19, 2021 16:49
I kept getting the dreaded "no space to download" message on my PS4 despite having over 80GB free. I did my research and found it to be a software issue that sony apparently refuses to fix.
So i needed a quick, cheaper, easy option to keep growing my game collection. All you do is plug this in, it's designed for PS4. Worked like a charm. I moved all my disc based games data over and now have TONS of space on the hard drive.
Does not require external power, it just plugs in via USB so i advise unplugging it when not in use to extend it's life.
Great value for the price.Jul 15, 2020 23:51
Perfect for my needs. Got a PS5 and needed more space to install most of my library since ps5 games can only be saved to the internal hard drive. Was pretty much plug and play, have had no problems.Jan 25, 2021 11:16
Excellent storage for PS4 games and allows you to play the games on PS5 without using PS5 storage and the games run smooth.Games run smooth on both PS4 and PS5 and doesn’t use any of your system storage.Sep 24, 2021 06:24
This small but effective hard drive will add a ton of space to your dwindling ps 4 on board memory for a ton of added games that you can quickly access and take with you if you need be. Connecting it is about as easy as it gets and formatting takes seconds. It’s extremely low profile and will not take up much space next to your existing unit.Nov 24, 2018 07:30
The WD_Black™ P10 Game Drive gives your console or PC the performance-enhancing tools it needs to keep your competitive edge. So far I've purchased 2 of these drives. My first was a 4T drive for our Xbox One S and then I purchased this 5T drive for our PS4. Packaging was nice, build feels sturdy and has a little weight to it. They've performed nicely and haven't had any issues so far, nor do I plan to. I've owned Seagate and WD in the past and also currently have a portable WD for my laptop. Huge reason I chose WD over Seagate is I had not one but two Seagate hard drives crash and unable to recover my data before. Therefore, I do what I can to stay away from them. I wish the write speeds were a little faster (states up to 140mbps) but it's to be expected. It says its accelerated but without testing speeds ect side by side, I dont really notice a difference. I was doing big transfers (totalled 1.5T) and took quite a while to do it. I wanted an SSD but wasn't prepared to pay for them. Instead, I settled on this drive and was happy enough with it that I purchased a second. I'd purchase again if needed.May 01, 2020 15:59
Case feels solid. Compatible with my router so I can access my files from any device. Super convenient if I wanted to let’s say, store a movie from my computer and watch it in the living room on my Xbox. It’s been running nonstop for about a month now and no strange noises or issues so far! I’ll try to remember to update this review if I ever have any issues. Purchase price: $105 before tax for 4tb model.Jul 10, 2020 17:57
EPIC STUFF RIGHT HERE!!!! Came early and it works perfectly with my ps5. Can’t beat the price for 4tb. I totally recommend this for any gamer whom needs that extra spaceMay 17, 2021 19:28
Great external hard drive for a PS4, it can hold many games even across different accounts. Great Product!Feb 13, 2021 19:31
Works great with my Xbox............................Jan 29, 2021 16:30
I remember the days when WD Black drives were Western Digital's "Performance" drives. Although I didn't buy this to be a "game drive" as marketed, but rather just a file backup drive, I figured this was a bit more than just WDs cheapest 2.5" HD in a nice enclosure. That was not the case. I'm getting read/write speeds of about 80-100MB/s, which is far below today's standard for 2.5" drives. I was expecting something between 125-150.
Don't buy these! Get an easystore or seagate expansion instead!Dec 13, 2020 11:07
The WD_BLACK P10 4TB (WDBA3A0040BBK) hard drive seems to work well with a standard PS4.
* The 4 TB P10 hard drive connects to the PS4 by one USB cable.
* The 4 TB P10 hard drive is physically smaller than the 8 TB D10 model.
* The 4 TB P10 hard drive powers by the PS4 USB port and does not use an AC plug, unlike the 8 TB D10 model that has an AC adapter & plug.
* At the time of the April 16, 2020 PS4 system software version 7.50 you can format the hard drive as extended storage for the PS4 by navigating to Settings/Devices/USB Storage Devices/WD_Black P10 Game Drive/Format as Extended Storage. Additionally the hard drive can be set as the "Application Install Location" by navigating to Settings/Storage then opening the options menu and choosing extended storage as the application install location.
* At the time of the April 16, 2020 PS4 system software version 7.50 if the hard drive is assigned as extended storage it will act as storage for "Applications" only. Accordingly Capture Gallery, Saved Data, and Themes will stay on the PS4 system storage.
* Applications can be moved from the PS4 system storage to the extended storage. During this process the move of the application will take priority and can not be run in the background.May 16, 2020 03:48
I bought this Product to store my Movies and TV shows I have acquired over the years. Transferring from DVD to my computer. I was a little worried about the speed of transfer from my Old Computer with USB 2.0 but, Surprisingly I was getting 22mbps to 32mbps and around 90mbps to 110mbps on my Newer computer with USB 3.1 So far so great! No issues or delay pulling up any Files on my Plex server. I do leave this on all the time and I figured since its Rated for GAMING it could handle the low demand. This really is the BEST BANG for your BUCK! Small and Discreet blends in with my Tower other than the built-in LED.
OH and another Thing! It says it only works with Windows 8 or Higher. I have Windows 7xp on the Old Computer, immediately recognized it as a External HDD and Plug-in Play was no problem! But I do suggest having USB 3.0 or Higher to really benefit from the MAX Transfer rate.Sep 08, 2021 13:20
Officially licensed storage for your PS4™ system, Seagate Game Drive is an external hard drive upgrade for any generation PS4™ console (software version 4.50 or higher). With capacity to install 50+ games, you can keep a library of classics and hot new releases at your fingertips. High-speed USB 3.0 means full-speed gaming—just like playing from your console’s internal drive. Set up in approximately three minutes—just plug Game Drive into any PS4™ USB port and you’ll be prompted through fast, easy steps.
Bought this for my PS5 because I had a lot of PS4 games downloaded onto the console and ran out of storage fast. So now I’m putting all my PS4 games on the extended hard drive which will free up space on my PS5 and now I can have all my PS4 games on the extended drive to play whenever. Now PS5 games will only be stored on the PS5 console. I had to plug it in the back of the PS5. Wouldn’t allow me to use the front USB had to use the back USB the closest one to the LAN connection. Worked easily.Jan 14, 2021 01:07
Works as advertised. Less than 2 minutes to plug in, and set as primary storage. Effectively quadrupled my storage on my 500 GB PS4. No real difference in load time that I can tell. Very happy with this purchase. The only minor issue is that it just has to hang out next to the PS4 attached by its very short cord. A longer cord might help to hide it, but this is a very small quibble. This does what I wanted it to with no hassle. No more agonized decisions over what to delete off the drive when I get a new game.May 13, 2021 12:32
With games taking up a large amount of memory I had to pick this up. Easy to plug in and format. Now I have extras memory to download those games during quarantine.Apr 18, 2020 11:17
I had a 1 terabyte of the same model but ran out of storage so I bought this 2 terabyte one. Works the same but faster and I have my full library of games and captures downloaded. I use it on my PS4 ProOct 31, 2020 03:18
Even though its only function is data storage for devices, I gave it a five star because it served its purpose for me. I recently bought the new PS5 console by Sony, however I did not want to fuss with my PS4’s expansive library so I needed to store my PS4 library to external storage. The PS5 does have limited space and considering next-gen games require much storage like the new CoD: Black Ops (that literally sucks up almost HALF the storage); to keep your last-gen library the system advises you to purchase a external drive to make you aware of the limited space at the moment. So, this drive was just what I needed to throw my PS4 console in the recycle bin, and some, the PS logo and sleek black finish make it a great external drive to compliment the new PS5 console.Dec 12, 2020 20:26
Absolutely essential for anyone that purchases things digitally.Sep 26, 2020 09:14
I bought this hard drive for my son's play station and he is very happy with it.Aug 28, 2021 11:47
I bought this as I kept deleting old games in order to play new ones as memory would fill up quickly. Just plug it in and leave it there and there you have it! More memory! Gives you enough memory for an extra 10-20 games depending on GB size of the games. Definitely recommend if looking for extra memoryJan 28, 2021 08:32

What to do with the limited space on the PS5...all these PS4 games. How about put them all on an external hard drive and play them whenever you want.
Yes, the load speeds are not going to be as good but you’ll be able to play any of the games whenever you want.Jan 29, 2021 16:23
I love it. Now I can store so many games without having to delete anything. Wish I would have bought this year's ago.Jan 09, 2021 23:33
Works just fine, plenty of space if you want to download gigabyte heavy gamesSep 08, 2020 19:11
Satisfied customer proud to shop at Best Buy was looking for to free up space the Staff was very knowledgeable about what I was looking for Thanks again Best BuyJan 22, 2021 22:38
It works great. I have not had a problem. Wd is the best in my book.Nov 23, 2019 16:20
The HDD inside is not a standard drive. the usb interface is built into the HDD itself. has the usb 3 micro wide plug instead of a usb c. I wish the listing had more details of what you actually are buying. the label on the drive doesn't even have the rpms. This just reinforces the idea that console gamers don't care about performance.May 05, 2020 12:51
I have had this over a year now and still works amazingly well. Ease of use is simple and takes about 3 minutes. Most people don't know, but the external hard drive port is located on the back of the ps4. So you really shouldn't be using your front ports for this device as it will run slower as well as take up a needed front port. I am already at 3.4TB of 4TB. Wish the 8TB could be used on the ps4, however it cannot be used on ps4 or ps4 pro. Design is nice, but feels fragile so I wouldn't want to drop it. Other than that, no negatives I can think of.Jul 10, 2020 13:37
This thing was great for me, I have a 2015 model PS4 (Black Ops 3 Edition 1TB) and have 90% of my games installed to the hard drive, naturally this space was used up fairly quickly but with the extra 4TB I was able to re-download all my earlier titles and have room for more demanding games like Modern Warfare or Fallout 4, definitely worth the extra 40$ from the 2TB option for double the capacity. The loading speed and small profile work great as well, I highly recommend this and maybe a protection plan if you move the console around a lot!Nov 20, 2020 20:16

So I got this extended storage drive for the Ps5. Only to found out that it's not supported for the Ps5 it only works for ps4 or ps4 pro as the label is intended.Jul 30, 2021 22:47
I’m using this with my PS4 and love all the extra space it gives me, it’s super easy you just plug it in and format it then you’re all set.Sep 28, 2019 21:15
Legendary device, i love and would highly reccommend it. :)Jul 23, 2021 16:05
Must have for your ps4 because you will run put of memory before you can blink especially if your playing warzone and with 4tb you wont have to worry for a while and games run smoothAug 12, 2021 00:43
Excellent, work real good with PS4 pro council plenty of added storageJul 16, 2021 15:59
Great buy for gamers. Sleek compact designs also make for easy travel. Would definitely buy again..Jul 30, 2020 22:03
I saw the bad reviews still gave it a chance. After 3 days of use stop working on my PS4 Pro i just bought. I put on 74 games less than 3 TB on 4TB Seagate. just stop working. I did not drop it nothing just plugged in. Now thing i do not like is not way to do A diagnostic check or reset button. playstation does detective no more. but light on hard drive show blue the turns off. took hours to down load all my games from my library. Do not Buy not worth the headache!!!! returning to bestbuy’sSep 03, 2019 13:25
Great for a PS4 Pro. I have over 200 PS4 games and I have all of the ones that I play downloaded to this external drive (91 games currently) with plenty more space for future downloads. No lag, no indication that I am playing on an external drive, loading times have actually decreased. I got the 4GB version and am completely satisfied. I love being able to play any game I own without having to worry able deleting games and redownloading because of space issues. Awesome drive!!!! If you have a PS4 and want more storage this is the way to go, much easier than replacing the stock drive which I have done before on my regular PS4, just plug this is and setup external storage from your PS4 settings menu....too easy. It has taken over a week to download my games but now I am free to binge game.Jul 28, 2021 13:46
The WD_Black P50 Game Drive SSD provides the tools you need to drive your game. With read speeds of up to 2000MB/s and up to 1TB of storage, you’ll spend less time waiting to get back in the game and more time actually playing. Designed from the ground up with the gamer in mind, the WD_Black P50 Game Drive SSD is future-ready with a SuperSpeed USB 20Gb/s interface to provide full compatibility to your PC or console.
This little drive is incredibly fast! I’m a professional digital artist with tons of content and late 2014 Mac Mini desktop computer which is already laden with tons of Adobe and Microsoft Office software. I did upgrade so an EVO SSD (1 tb) but still with well over 500 gigs of content I was beginning to experience some lag. I dumped it all onto this ssd the other day and it took only 18 minutes! (despite this computer having only the now somewhat outdated usb 3.0 ports) Bravo! What a great little external!Aug 02, 2021 11:29
I recently purchased a gaming laptop from Best Buy, and I love just about everything about it. The only thing I wanted to change was, you guessed it, more space. We have an Xbox Game Pass, and they have so many great games, and with some big releases coming in at over 30gb we didn’t want to fill up our 512gb SSD on our laptop. I considered purchasing another internal SSD but didn’t want to open up my laptop unless I needed to. Enter the WD Black P50 1TB External SSD, and we could not be happier with it.
First, it is fast. I was able to move games over from my primary SSD to the WD one in very little time. We are talking about 200gb worth of info in just a few minutes. Since there are no moving parts it makes no noise, unlike the older HHD. It does get very warm whenever you are pushing it but normally is very cool to the touch. Plus, I am guessing had I went with an internal SSD that heat would have been hampering the internals of my laptop so guess it’s good that it is sitting on the table next to it instead.
Size, this thing is tiny, I tried to include some images to show the size of the WD drive. Not that I plan on pocketing it, but it would easily fit in my pocket, and for sure would fit in a laptop bag without any issues. I also really like the aesthetics of it, kind of a military surplus vibe.
One last thing to keep in mind. Games run great from this, I was able to move every one of my games over to it, and have experienced no performance issues. They load up super fast, no change from the internal SSD. One issue I came across was that I was having some issues installing some games from Xbox Game Pass. The problem wasn’t with the WD drive. Out of the box, the WD drive is formatted exFAT I believe. Well, some games won’t let you install it on that type of filesystem. So, I moved my info off the drive, did a quick format to NTFS, and bam back in business. I have downloaded and installed a bunch of games, Fortnite, World of Warcraft, Gears Tactics, Elder Scrolls Online, Call of Duty Warzone, etc. and they all have worked perfectly.
I am very happy we went with this WD external SSD to upgrade our storage. Tons of extra space, super quick speed, and small form factor. This is an easy recommendation to anyone looking for some fast storage to increase their space, but either can’t or doesn’t want to do an internal SSD upgradeMay 02, 2020 13:42
If you buy a PS5 and want to keep your PS4 games stored then do yourself a favor and grab this ssd also. The speeds with this are ridanculous just like the PS5.Mar 25, 2021 19:56
Bought this drive and you really can tell a difference between this and a hdd on your Ps5. Launches games quicker. Download speeds depend on your internet not the drive. The drive has a wicked read and write speedJan 12, 2021 00:08
I really like the ssd. Id say get it if you can afford it.May 14, 2021 15:51
I am happy to say that this portable solid state hard drive is better than I had expected. I have used other external hard drives in the past and can easily say that this unit is equal to or greater than any other unit i have used. It boils down to three areas which drive me to this conclusion; size, sound and build.
The size of this unit is a little larger than a deck of cards. It does not require a lot of room to store. With that being said, it fits perfectly on top of my console or pc and does not look like an eye sore since its dark in color and does not draw the eye.
The second reason why i enjoy this hard drive is because it is whisper quiet. Having a the 3.2 capability, 2x2 set up, alongside of a whopping 1T storage size had me questioning if there would be a potential audible aspect, as the unit is as small as it is. I am also happy to say there this unit is silent.
Lastly is the durability. The hard outer shell of this solid state hard drive put my mind to rest when moving between locations. Other portable drives have a fabric or flimsy exterior. Not this one. Its exterior is built tough, even with rubber feet to assure a sound grip as to wherever it is sitting.
All in all, I recommend this unit because of its design, durability and whisper quiet sounds.Apr 30, 2020 12:28
Wow, just wow. I am amazed such a thing exists with such raw speed. Keep in mind, this drive is designed as a gaming hard drive for fast load times but I am sure other users can put this bad boy to great use if you require an extremely fast (20 gbps) and reliable hard drive. I tried this review on a few computers to test performance… the test computers were a 2019 MacBook Pro 15 which supports USB-C 3.1 Gen 2, a 2018 Alienware R7 which also supports 3.1 Gen 2, and an Xbox One X at USB 3.0. I thought I had a device which supports the full 3.2 2x2 speeds but with all the USB rebranding it appears my devices that are 3.1 gen 2 which is now USB 3.2 gen 2 which is extremely confusing. So as a result my devices support a max of 10 gbps. I am not sure there are any motherboards on market which currently support 2x2 speeds of 20 gbps as all vendors I researched only show the 10gbps cap even for most custom builds I could find.
Unboxing: This hard drive comes in a small box which has shows the actual size of the product. The interior contains the hard drive, a USB-C to C cable, a USB-A to C cable and warranty documentation.
Build quality: The durability of this product is second to none. It is not designed for portability but appears to be designed to remain stationary. I am not saying you couldn’t carry it around but most of the portable types of these drives are sealed shut, this WD Black SSD appears to have little vents on the bottom to keep it cool. It is made out of metal and feels tough as can be with ridges and WD Black branding on the top. It simply looks cool next to your PC. The USB cables are a little short and on my desktops the hard drive was kind of hanging a little bit, luckily I had a longer Thunderbolt 3 cable sitting around which supported the full speeds needed. So I used that most of the time.
Use: No setup is needed. I first tried it on my MacBook Pro which supports USB 3.1 gen 2. I used Black Magic to benchmark and initially got speeds of 952 MB/s write and 926.8 read. I was blown away already being able to transfer 8 GB files in just over 8 seconds. My initial thoughts were that this is going to be a game changer for transferring videos and RAW photos being able to use it to work off of exclusively… but I remembered it is designed for gaming so moved toward that.
I installed it to my Alienware PC which supported similar USB speeds, I only got about 850 MB/s on the PC using Crystaldiskbench for some reason with the same USB 3.1 gen 2 support, but it was nothing to scoff at. After transferring Overwatch, Jedi Fallen Order, Doom Eternal and a few other games I gave it a shot. Overwatch ran smooth as can be with no loading stutters at all. The game loaded quickly but loading a level is hard to judge since there are often waiting rooms when getting into a game. Jedi the Fallen Order had similar issues since most of the loading times are integrated into cutscenes with dialog so it is hard to say if speeds were faster, but it again ran quickly and smooth. Doom eternal had noticeably quicker loading times overall. I later tried a game with huge loading times, Star Wars Battlefront II and Battlefield V. Times were still long but to me it felt like they were at least halved in comparison to the old SATA SSD they were loaded on.
The drive is kind of overkill when installed on and Xbox One X. It appears it only supports USB 3.0 so it’s speed is greatly limited. You will not see drastic speed differences but loading times will be decreased.
I did not see drastically different load times from my other PC I tried the games on but it was still far better than the original setup I had. I think a large limitation is the game design itself as most games integrate times for loading into the gameplay such as elevators, long hallways, slow moving dialog scenes, etc. Once these speeds are more common place perhaps games will adapt to it.
If nothing else, you can be certain that game elements will load quickly, there will be no stutter when textures are cached and so on.
Summary: This is a must have device for any gamer. Most computers are not able to take advantage of these speeds yet and there are no consoles ready for its ability yet. Next gen consoles like the Xbox One Series X and PS5 should support high speed interfaces so it is great for future proofing. If you have a brand new PC that supports USB 3.2 you are in for an amazing treat. Most high end PCs support 3.1 gen 2 right now and this will still give you amazing speeds (just be sure to use the right port, some are slower than others on PCs). Overall, this hard drive is worth the purchase if you are or are not a gamer. It has great potential for gamers and can be game changer for video / photo editing professionals.May 02, 2020 00:51
I will just start by saying that from the price to the build quality to the performance, this drive obviously does not reflect your average portable drive. This drive is meant for the dedicated content creation professional or hardcore gamer, someone who demands top performance out of their equipment. In my opinion console users should skip; I fully detail why below.
My test platform for this drive was my custom gaming and content creation PC with a 2019 Asus ROG STRIX Z390-E GAMING motherboard with a USB 3.1 Gen 1 USB-C connection. Thus, I did not even come close to the 2000MB/s read/write speeds this drive can achieve through a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 interface. With my USB 3.1 Geb 1 interface, according to CrystalDiskMark7 I achieved a SEQ1M write speed of 1061MB/s and a write speed of 1019MB/s. What this means is that the bottleneck to achieving the top advertised speeds of this drive is my USB 3.1 Gen 1 interface and not the drive! I also tested the read/write speed of this drive over a USB 3.0 connection using the included USB-C to USB-A cable and had a read of 464MB/s and write of 465MB/s, once again demonstrating the bottleneck is in the connection and not the drive. Another test I performed was the copying of a 10GB folder from my Crucial P1 NVMe M.2 SSD drive in my computer to the WD P50 drive via the USB-A 3.0 and USB-C 3.1 Gen 1 connections I have available. Via USB-A 3.0, the drive copied the folder over at a sustained average rate of 340MB/s with no dips and over USB-C 3.1 Gen 1, I had a sustained average transfer rate of nearly double USB-A 3.0 at 600MB/s with no dips.
The summary of all of this is basically that this drive is going to absolutely knock the socks off any tasks that you throw at it for the average use case and with the connection via USB 3.2 Gen 2x2, this thing is going to be as blazing fast as an average NVMe SSD connected to a motherboard via M.2 connection.
All the numbers aside, the build quality of the drive itself is just incredibly high level. The WD Black series from Western Digital is something I have come to associate with high quality in general, and this drive continues to prove that. It is encased in a forged aluminum cover and to touch feels well-regulated in its temperature with sustained transfers during my testing. It has the toughness that would have me feeling secure about tossing it into my backpack and heading to the coffee shop without concern for its integrity. Furthermore, being an SSD, this drive has no moving parts unlike a standard portable HDD and thus will be even further suited to portability. For my use case, this is going to be a backup drive to my main drive on my gaming PC and will be partitioned for some of my photo and video editing projects and as a secondary Steam library folder for my games where load times are important (like Fallout 4, lol).
The only thing I will say in way of consideration for the buyer is that this drive CAN be used by current gen console users, but that doesn’t mean it SHOULD as a first or top choice. The problem is that current gen consoles like the PS4 and Xbox One X are not going to even come close to getting the full use out of this drive due to bottlenecking by the consoles’ USB-A connection interface. Thus, the money would likely be wasted here for most console gamers looking for expandability for their console game libraries. Console gamers would be better off with a larger portable hard drive like a WD Easystore or something along those lines. When the new consoles like the PS5 and Xbox Series X come out in 2020-2021, however, there might be justification for use of higher end portable SSDs like this WD Black P50 for library expansion since the read/write speeds won’t be as bottlenecked by the console/connection interface.
Overall, I am incredibly impressed with this drive and I cannot recommend it enough if this is something you are in the market for a high-end Windows PC or Apple PC. Hope this review helped you out and thanks for reading.Apr 30, 2020 18:29

Out from the box, WD Black USB3 hard drive has no OEM files on it.
4.5TB usable space when formatted on Xbox One.Jan 15, 2021 02:34
You must get one for your Ps5 to have your PS4 games on!Apr 09, 2021 17:15
Really glad I found this on sale! Totally worth the price investment. I've loaded up nearly 100 games on to the drive so far and barely used half the storage total (still 2.4 TB free). Transferring between WD-Black and the XSX main SSD are solidly in the right timeframe to not be an issue. I keep my primary games that I play everyday on the SSD and hold the HDD for overflow storage and move back and forth as needed instead of needing to re-download. Overall great deal, so go for it!May 11, 2021 19:11
I bought this for my ps4 although my ps4 has 1 TB, I didn't want to worry about having enough space for games or updates which are getting pretty big. I was suprised at how easy it was to set up it literally was just taking it out the box plugging it into the ps4 and moving all my games into it and making it my default storage place so anytime I buy new games it goes straight there. I've had it for a little over a month and its worked great except for getting a little warm like other reviews stated. For now I am happy with my purchase but if anything changes ill come back and update my review.Apr 27, 2021 11:39
An excellent portable Hard Drive! I use it for backing up files from my PC. It is large capacity and works perfect as well as very fast.Oct 22, 2021 16:05
I bought this specifically for use with my PS5. It works perfectly. You can only download PS4 games and save files but that is what I purchased it for. I have a huge library of PS4 games and they all run perfectly. I actually had issues with PS4 saves using the SSD in the PS5. I have had no issues with saves or data for all my games on the the external drive. You don’t need an SSD so save some money. You cannot save PS5 games on this but runs PS4 games great.May 07, 2021 16:45
Instead of speanding almost twice for 1 extra terabyte of storage, I'd rather just backup every game to a bigger slow drive.Oct 10, 2021 17:16
Nice 5TB portable hard drive. I bought this when on sale. It has been working with my PC without issue. I like how it looks and sits on some rubber feet with wide stance so it doesn't slip around like some others. It has great read/write speed when using USB 3.2. I recommend getting this one!Jan 05, 2021 16:46
Expand your PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X/S console storage with this Western Digital WB_BLACK D30 game drive SSD. The 1TB capacity provides ample room for your gaming library. Featuring a 10 Gbps USB Type-C interface, this Western Digital WB_BLACK D30 game drive SSD supports quick data transfer, and read speeds of up to 900 MB/sec. ensure fast load times.
WD made a very reliable and solid SSD. The drive performs very well with loading up games and data at a fantastic speed. D30 works with a decent amount of devices that gives you 1TB of storage. It works with the PS4, PS5 (PS4 games only), Xbox, and PC. So far for PC games, it does the job it needs to. Played a ton of games from Steam and Epic game store on the device.
The SSD is nicely designed but nothing too special. It gives a rugged vibe to its design and seems to take falls pretty well. D30 does have a "gamer" look to it but it's also portable where you can just slip it into a laptop bag and go. Comes with a USB-C to Type-A cable but I'm using USB-C to USB-C on the device. I was just happy that I could just whip this around from device to device with ease. it also comes with a Stand to prop it up next to your gaming device.
What is more to say? it does everything it advertises to do and with ease. everything just worked fine, games loaded up rapidly, Plug and Play. WD BLACK D30 is just a great drive and a brand I'll buy from now on.Jul 23, 2021 09:56
Simply put, I was tired of deleting games and then adding back on later. Never thought I would need more internal storage. It’s fast when transferring back and forth. If you have PS4 games, you can play those on the storage which most of us have. I’m using this on my PS5. I learned that with PS5 games, you can only store and/or transfer to and from the internal. You cannot play PS5 games on it.
If your tired of deleting games, this storage is for you.Jul 25, 2021 17:26
WD has a performance Black high end drives that has generally great reviews. So riding on the praise of the Black NVMe is this drive clinging to the Black brand. No. This drive contains a WD Blue NVMe, the older WD SN500. A cheaper, but still respectable, NVMe drive that performs up to 1/2 what a true Black drive can. While I do love the Blues as an inexpensive option in my builds, it's sad they they use the Black branding on a device that has no Black drive in it. Keep that in mind if you purchase this.
I got the D30 to mainly use on my Xbox One S. Coping about 100GB of games (all two games, lol) took about 20 or so minutes - I had to walk away during the copy. Load time was faster, but I forgot to time the load time off the internal HD so I compare. Having extra space in a small form factor is a nice feature for my Xbox.
Now, you can use the D30 on a PC, but you can't swap back and forth without formatting. On a PC I only tested with the stock cable as I couldn't find my C to C 3.2 cable. Peak read was 462 read with 440 write. Even the random tests were respectable. Overall, this is a great external drive for everyday use or gaming. I do wish the case were smaller to take advantage of the NVMe's size.
WD is building a history of deception as bad as cellphones use the word "unlimited." First was the relabeling of Green drives as Blue and having the ridiculous high load count and slower platters. Recently, selling SMR drives in their Red NAS drives instead of CMR which gives reduced reliability in a server environment. I wish they'd clean up their act and get back to what made them a good company. Because of the shady practices, this drive only passes as average, but I'd still recommend it as long as the buyer knows they're not getting a Black drive.Jul 24, 2021 15:53
Being one of the lucky people to find a PS5 last year was a double edged sword: I had the hottest new console on the market but I had slightly less than 700GB of drive space. Now while there aren’t many PS5 games available it still plays all the PS4 backlog I’m working through or that my kids refuse to move away from. Being able to trial run a WD Black 1TB Gaming SSD was a possible solution but I’d heard that some external drives don’t run as well as the internal or worse the PS5 locks up if you use them. I’m ecstatic to report that isn’t the case with WD Black!
First, the drive size is really small, about half the size of my Galaxy phone. Second, it comes packed with a stand to clip onto it so it will sit upright along the long edge instead of just flopping over wherever the cord lets it go. Finally, and best of all, the drive performs as well as the internal drive with my PS4 games. I transferred all 500GB of my stored games to the WD drive which took a while but I don’t think it was more than an hour (I forgot to check the clock when I started but its not bad! Certainly not PS3 transfer speeds thank goodness!). Once they’re loaded up they perform fast and flawless no matter if they were digital only games or digital versions of your standard disc games (Skyrim, Lego Marvel Heroes, Last of Us 2, etc.). I put them in sleep/standby mode and woke the system the next morning and jumped right back where I left off without lag or freezing! Its amazing and makes me super happy!
Setup is simple, just plug the drive into the base and the cord into the drive, set it near your console (it’s a standard 12 inch cable so it’s gotta be close), and plug the drive into the BACKSIDE of the console (no fighting over the front port for charging your controller, extra awesome!). Once plugged in it should prompt you or you can navigate and format the drive for PS5 storage format then you’re good to go! Super easy, barely an inconvenience!!! There’s not much else to say besides that its function is awesome and it looks even cooler with the rugged looking plastic shell (its not drop proof, you can feel its just a cool shell not actual protection).
Hightly recommend, if you have a new system then you NEED this drive to keep space for all your games.Aug 02, 2021 22:55
With the increase in the size of the new video games, the gaming consoles' storage capacity remains at 1TB, such as the new Xbox series X and PS5. So the only option that remains is to download one or two games to play, and when completed, I have to delete and download another. Personally, I'm not too fond of this solution because I often like to go back to my old games to play. In such cases, extended storage is the practical solution. This WD Black D30 1TB is a definitive remedy to the storage capacity issue since the high graphics games are taking much space. WD SSD D30 size is compact and looks excellent and sits in place "thank you for the base." My experience has gone smooth and flawless. First, I hooked it up to my PS5 using the front USB-A, and once connected, I got the message of a need to format the SSD drive to use it as external storage. Next, I moved one pre-installed game from internal to external storage, and the transfer rate was significant fast, and 57 GB of game size was completely transferred in 8-10 minutes. However, I reversed the process by moving the game back from my WD SSD to PS5 internal storage, and here the transfer time was cut down to 5 minutes. Another attempt is to hook up my WD D30 to my Xbox series X using the front USB-A, but the first attempt did not go so well as the SSD drive was shown as media storage only. Then I noticed the USB cable was not securely plugged into the Xbox USB-A port, which tells me if the USB is not plugged in completely, then the SSD drive shows media storage only. Once the cable is connected, the pop-up screen has shown up, and I went to settings/ system/storage and saw the new external storage listed right below the internal. I went ahead and installed a new game (Valhalla) on the WD SSD drive; after 10-14 minutes, the download was complete, but the game did not load up, so I installed it again on my internal, and the game worked just fine. I thought about moving another game just to give it a try because if this SSD is only to store games on it, then to me, it is useless; I moved Tom Clancy's The Division 2, and Voila! It worked immediately, and I was amazed that the game loaded up from the external drive and was smooth and with no lags. My conclusion was that certain games could be installed and played directly from this WD SSD, and others can only be stored, and whenever I need to play them, I just move them to the internal storage as the time of moving them is shorter than redownloading them again—excellent and reliable speed.Jul 24, 2021 00:30
It’s clear that disc based media is quickly becoming extinct, particularly with respect to console and PC gaming.
Solid State drive technology is light years faster than its platter-based HDD predecessor, however SSD drive space is severely limited in the lower price regions, while being insanely expensive once you get above 4 TB, or 8 TB.
The new generation of video game consoles only offer 1 TB internal storage, while graphic intensive games now routinely clock in at 50 GB to 100 GB or more. While it’s not too much of a problem to delete a game and just re-download it later over high-speed internet, certain ISP broadband providers have implemented data cap (1.2 TB / month on Comcast for example).
It is for this reason that this product category exists and is thriving in fact based on these being back ordered at the time of this writing.
My intention for the WD Black D30 was to avoid having to delete my Forza and other games from the Xbox Series X internal drive, and install the new MSFS Flight Simulator 2020 on the WD. Unfortunately I was notified that games optimized for Series X must still run from the internal drive. The 102 GB game (before 35 GB updates) did transfer quickly from external to internal, though I did have to shuttle games off the internal defeating the purpose. This is more cumbersome than planned.
By contrast Seagate offers a 1 TB extension card (for about $50 more) that is designed to use the dedicated expansion port on the back of the console, instead of a USB port. This allows the drive to be an invisible extension of the internal drive, which will then run next gen titles optimized for Series X.
+ compact size
+ super fast speed
+ solid state storage
-does NOT “extend” drive storage
-must be formatted for either Xbox or PS5
-must still move Optimized titles to internal drive
While this 1 TB SSD drive is very fast (like all solid-state), it DOES NOT allow you to play Optimized for Xbox games. Seagate’s 1 TB expansion card costs more but is a better option with less manual intervention. On the flip side, Samsung T5 and T7 external SSDs are less expensive at the 1 TB size, or slightly more for double the external storage (though would still require shuttling games between drives)
Not recommended buyAug 06, 2021 11:12
It felt like a plug and play to my PlayStation.
I’ve had one before and decided to upgrade.
1TB is a perfect size since I’m not a serious gamer but I’m don’t buy actual disc games and this storage is perfect for all the games I purchase and save. Easy to navigate.
The actual size is very small and bulky so I feel comfortable traveling with it. Overall great addition to my PlayStation setupAug 03, 2021 11:07
This drive is very easy to use and I was up and running in minutes. To use it you simply plug it into the PS5, go to settings and storage and you'll see it available as USB Extended Storage. Once formatted you can default it to always install PS4 games to the USB Extended storage where they can stay while you play them. For PS5 games, as the product description explains, they can only be stored and not played while on this drive. The process to copy the games over from the PS5 is simple and just as simple and fast to copy them back. The convenience on a PS5 game then is it frees up storage when you aren't going to be playing the game for an extended period and then allows you to quickly copy the game back to the PS5 when you do want to play. The process to copy the game back to the PS5 is much quicker than another long installation of the game.
Overall the drive works exactly as explained and is easy to use while more than doubling the amount of space you have to store games on your PS5.
A must have for someone running out of room on their PS5.Jul 19, 2021 22:26
The WD_Black™ D10 Game Drive will take your console or PC to the next level and help you keep the competitive edge you need to win. Add up to 8TB of extra storage to your device to build up your game library up to 200 games, or relive your best in-action moments by saving your favorite gameplay recordings. Rated at 7200 RPM with active cooling technology, WD_Black™ D10 Game Drive has speeds up to 250MB/s to kick your game into high-performance mode so you can play without limits and drive your game the way you choose.
I purchased this drive for my Playstation 5 for external storage of Playstation 4 games library and hopefully in the future external backup of Playstation 5 games to offload the internal SSD (come on Sony give us a firmware update). The device aesthetic is very nice and I don't have any complaints about the build. The advertised read and write speeds are right in line with what Western Digital states are the speeds (see attached picture). I have seen people asking what drive is inside this external "WD_Black" series external drive. Well it's not a black series drive (Like the 8TB WD8001FZBX) but an HGST HUS728T8TALE6L4. This is not a bad thing as this is a data center-class hard drive and paying only $15-20 for a nice external enclosure. Be aware this is not 100% quiet as it is a full-size, higher-performing drive but is not annoying and probably cant be heard from 10 feet away if gaming from a distance. If you need an extremely quiet drive look at the Western Digital P10 Black series but you are not going to get this performance. I have to do further testing to see if the drive ever fully ramps down as it does seem like the platters tend to constantly spin just for longevity purposes.Nov 15, 2020 16:12
Awsome loveing that i have more storage for my ps4 games on my ps5 wish they made a bigger Terra bite than the 8 thow but very simple and easy to use matches my blk ps5 perfectlyOct 25, 2021 12:05
Don’t buy a PS5 without this ! Sony didn’t tell you storage goes fast with PS4 games and media apps. If you sign up for PS Now your gonna need storage , BAD!!! And you can charge up your controllers freeing up usb slots on your game system. It just works hand and hand. Your gonna need at least 5GB of storage choose wiselyFeb 19, 2021 15:39
Really fast external hard drive.
This WD Black external features a fast 7200rpm hard disk for fast transfers and fast seeking.Jun 18, 2021 17:17
I have a 2tbs in my ps4, but combined with this external hard drive I know have 4tbs. I wish I would have brought this hard drive when I first got my ps4. Tell you what I will have it when I get ps5 can't wait.Sep 18, 2020 16:14
One of the best items I have bought. Thank you so much!Apr 16, 2021 15:36
I would buy another one again this item is good Good customer serviceJan 08, 2021 18:10
Great for xbox one x. Fast than my older drive 7200rpm works like a gem.Oct 25, 2020 10:40
The WD_Black P50 Game Drive SSD provides the tools you need to drive your game. With read speeds of up to 2000MB/s and up to 2TB of storage, you’ll spend less time waiting to get back in the game and more time actually playing. Designed from the ground up with the gamer in mind, the WD_Black P50 Game Drive SSD is future-ready with a SuperSpeed USB 20Gb/s interface to provide full compatibility to your PC or console.
Plug in and that's it! (Heads up: it's not defaulted to NTFS so you may wish to format before adding files)
Extremely Slim! (Perfect for my New Razer Blade 15 Advanced Edition)
This is made for next gen USB ports (it's Gen 3.2 2x2)
It's a little costly but that's how all new technology is sold to the consumer. Don't let that scare you. It's definitely worth the purchase!Jul 15, 2020 17:38
What a difference from mechanical to SSD drive, super fast. I highly recommend it for Xbox series X and PlayStation five.Dec 25, 2020 18:51
Works just like it said it would. No difference playing a game from my PS5 or the external. The price is extremely high though.Apr 23, 2021 18:47
Works great and make things so much easier for my ps5.Jul 09, 2021 15:51
The PS5 does not come with much internal storage. I purchased this external storage for my son’s PS5 and he was grateful that I did. It is SSD drive and should last longer than Gen 1 external drive.Jan 10, 2021 20:22
This hard-drive is very fast. It is worth the price.Sep 20, 2020 10:45
Very fast for an external ssd. So far no problems but have only used it for a few weeks. I'm currently using it with my PS5 which works well. If thinking about this for a PS5 you should know that you will only be getting 1000MB/s due to the USB-C on the console, not the advertised speed of 2000MB/s. It is also expensive so I can't recommend to everyone. Otherwise, I am happy with this purchase.Apr 09, 2021 17:43
Fast, quiet, PS4 Pro and PS5 compatibility.
I highly recommend it.Apr 23, 2021 16:44

i didnt know this was an option to add this to my PlayStation 4, no more deleting games, idk how i lived with out this for so long, well worth the moneyAug 27, 2021 15:24
I loaded 40 x box series x games on to the hardrive and it erased itself a week later and I lost my games . Also any game you save on this drive you can’t run without transferring to x box internal hard drive so it’s basically uselessOct 30, 2021 05:08
Award Winning Horror game, Apsulov: End of Gods is a future Viking horror and sci-fi adventure unlike any other. The humans dug deep below the earth to find the mercy of the gods.
