Top Best 13 ps4 storage in December 2021

Bought this for my PS5 because I had a lot of PS4 games downloaded onto the console and ran out of storage fast. So now I’m putting all my PS4 games on the extended hard drive which will free up space on my PS5 and now I can have all my PS4 games on the extended drive to play whenever. Now PS5 games will only be stored on the PS5 console. I had to plug it in the back of the PS5. Wouldn’t allow me to use the front USB had to use the back USB the closest one to the LAN connection. Worked easily.

Works as advertised. Less than 2 minutes to plug in, and set as primary storage. Effectively quadrupled my storage on my 500 GB PS4. No real difference in load time that I can tell. Very happy with this purchase. The only minor issue is that it just has to hang out next to the PS4 attached by its very short cord. A longer cord might help to hide it, but this is a very small quibble. This does what I wanted it to with no hassle. No more agonized decisions over what to delete off the drive when I get a new game.

With games taking up a large amount of memory I had to pick this up. Easy to plug in and format. Now I have extras memory to download those games during quarantine.

I had a 1 terabyte of the same model but ran out of storage so I bought this 2 terabyte one. Works the same but faster and I have my full library of games and captures downloaded. I use it on my PS4 Pro

Even though its only function is data storage for devices, I gave it a five star because it served its purpose for me. I recently bought the new PS5 console by Sony, however I did not want to fuss with my PS4’s expansive library so I needed to store my PS4 library to external storage. The PS5 does have limited space and considering next-gen games require much storage like the new CoD: Black Ops (that literally sucks up almost HALF the storage); to keep your last-gen library the system advises you to purchase a external drive to make you aware of the limited space at the moment. So, this drive was just what I needed to throw my PS4 console in the recycle bin, and some, the PS logo and sleek black finish make it a great external drive to compliment the new PS5 console.

Absolutely essential for anyone that purchases things digitally.

I bought this hard drive for my son's play station and he is very happy with it.

I bought this as I kept deleting old games in order to play new ones as memory would fill up quickly. Just plug it in and leave it there and there you have it! More memory! Gives you enough memory for an extra 10-20 games depending on GB size of the games. Definitely recommend if looking for extra memory

So I got this extended storage drive for the Ps5. Only to found out that it's not supported for the Ps5 it only works for ps4 or ps4 pro as the label is intended.

I saw the bad reviews still gave it a chance. After 3 days of use stop working on my PS4 Pro i just bought. I put on 74 games less than 3 TB on 4TB Seagate. just stop working. I did not drop it nothing just plugged in. Now thing i do not like is not way to do A diagnostic check or reset button. playstation does detective no more. but light on hard drive show blue the turns off. took hours to down load all my games from my library. Do not Buy not worth the headache!!!! returning to bestbuy’s

What to do with the limited space on the PS5...all these PS4 games. How about put them all on an external hard drive and play them whenever you want.

Yes, the load speeds are not going to be as good but you’ll be able to play any of the games whenever you want.

The HDD inside is not a standard drive. the usb interface is built into the HDD itself. has the usb 3 micro wide plug instead of a usb c. I wish the listing had more details of what you actually are buying. the label on the drive doesn't even have the rpms. This just reinforces the idea that console gamers don't care about performance.

I have had this over a year now and still works amazingly well. Ease of use is simple and takes about 3 minutes. Most people don't know, but the external hard drive port is located on the back of the ps4. So you really shouldn't be using your front ports for this device as it will run slower as well as take up a needed front port. I am already at 3.4TB of 4TB. Wish the 8TB could be used on the ps4, however it cannot be used on ps4 or ps4 pro. Design is nice, but feels fragile so I wouldn't want to drop it. Other than that, no negatives I can think of.

This thing was great for me, I have a 2015 model PS4 (Black Ops 3 Edition 1TB) and have 90% of my games installed to the hard drive, naturally this space was used up fairly quickly but with the extra 4TB I was able to re-download all my earlier titles and have room for more demanding games like Modern Warfare or Fallout 4, definitely worth the extra 40$ from the 2TB option for double the capacity. The loading speed and small profile work great as well, I highly recommend this and maybe a protection plan if you move the console around a lot!

So far I've purchased 2 of these drives. My first was a 4T drive for our Xbox One S and then I purchased this 5T drive for our PS4. Packaging was nice, build feels sturdy and has a little weight to it. They've performed nicely and haven't had any issues so far, nor do I plan to. I've owned Seagate and WD in the past and also currently have a portable WD for my laptop. Huge reason I chose WD over Seagate is I had not one but two Seagate hard drives crash and unable to recover my data before. Therefore, I do what I can to stay away from them. I wish the write speeds were a little faster (states up to 140mbps) but it's to be expected. It says its accelerated but without testing speeds ect side by side, I dont really notice a difference. I was doing big transfers (totalled 1.5T) and took quite a while to do it. I wanted an SSD but wasn't prepared to pay for them. Instead, I settled on this drive and was happy enough with it that I purchased a second. I'd purchase again if needed.

Case feels solid. Compatible with my router so I can access my files from any device. Super convenient if I wanted to let’s say, store a movie from my computer and watch it in the living room on my Xbox. It’s been running nonstop for about a month now and no strange noises or issues so far! I’ll try to remember to update this review if I ever have any issues. Purchase price: $105 before tax for 4tb model.

I remember the days when WD Black drives were Western Digital's "Performance" drives. Although I didn't buy this to be a "game drive" as marketed, but rather just a file backup drive, I figured this was a bit more than just WDs cheapest 2.5" HD in a nice enclosure. That was not the case. I'm getting read/write speeds of about 80-100MB/s, which is far below today's standard for 2.5" drives. I was expecting something between 125-150.

Very Disappointing.

Don't buy these! Get an easystore or seagate expansion instead!

The WD_BLACK P10 4TB (WDBA3A0040BBK) hard drive seems to work well with a standard PS4.

I bought this Product to store my Movies and TV shows I have acquired over the years. Transferring from DVD to my computer. I was a little worried about the speed of transfer from my Old Computer with USB 2.0 but, Surprisingly I was getting 22mbps to 32mbps and around 90mbps to 110mbps on my Newer computer with USB 3.1 So far so great! No issues or delay pulling up any Files on my Plex server. I do leave this on all the time and I figured since its Rated for GAMING it could handle the low demand. This really is the BEST BANG for your BUCK! Small and Discreet blends in with my Tower other than the built-in LED.

OH and another Thing! It says it only works with Windows 8 or Higher. I have Windows 7xp on the Old Computer, immediately recognized it as a External HDD and Plug-in Play was no problem! But I do suggest having USB 3.0 or Higher to really benefit from the MAX Transfer rate.

This little drive is incredibly fast! I’m a professional digital artist with tons of content and late 2014 Mac Mini desktop computer which is already laden with tons of Adobe and Microsoft Office software. I did upgrade so an EVO SSD (1 tb) but still with well over 500 gigs of content I was beginning to experience some lag. I dumped it all onto this ssd the other day and it took only 18 minutes! (despite this computer having only the now somewhat outdated usb 3.0 ports) Bravo! What a great little external!

I recently purchased a gaming laptop from Best Buy, and I love just about everything about it. The only thing I wanted to change was, you guessed it, more space. We have an Xbox Game Pass, and they have so many great games, and with some big releases coming in at over 30gb we didn’t want to fill up our 512gb SSD on our laptop. I considered purchasing another internal SSD but didn’t want to open up my laptop unless I needed to. Enter the WD Black P50 1TB External SSD, and we could not be happier with it.

First, it is fast. I was able to move games over from my primary SSD to the WD one in very little time. We are talking about 200gb worth of info in just a few minutes. Since there are no moving parts it makes no noise, unlike the older HHD. It does get very warm whenever you are pushing it but normally is very cool to the touch. Plus, I am guessing had I went with an internal SSD that heat would have been hampering the internals of my laptop so guess it’s good that it is sitting on the table next to it instead.

Size, this thing is tiny, I tried to include some images to show the size of the WD drive. Not that I plan on pocketing it, but it would easily fit in my pocket, and for sure would fit in a laptop bag without any issues. I also really like the aesthetics of it, kind of a military surplus vibe.

One last thing to keep in mind. Games run great from this, I was able to move every one of my games over to it, and have experienced no performance issues. They load up super fast, no change from the internal SSD. One issue I came across was that I was having some issues installing some games from Xbox Game Pass. The problem wasn’t with the WD drive. Out of the box, the WD drive is formatted exFAT I believe. Well, some games won’t let you install it on that type of filesystem. So, I moved my info off the drive, did a quick format to NTFS, and bam back in business. I have downloaded and installed a bunch of games, Fortnite, World of Warcraft, Gears Tactics, Elder Scrolls Online, Call of Duty Warzone, etc. and they all have worked perfectly.

I am very happy we went with this WD external SSD to upgrade our storage. Tons of extra space, super quick speed, and small form factor. This is an easy recommendation to anyone looking for some fast storage to increase their space, but either can’t or doesn’t want to do an internal SSD upgrade

If you buy a PS5 and want to keep your PS4 games stored then do yourself a favor and grab this ssd also. The speeds with this are ridanculous just like the PS5.

Bought this drive and you really can tell a difference between this and a hdd on your Ps5. Launches games quicker. Download speeds depend on your internet not the drive. The drive has a wicked read and write speed

I am happy to say that this portable solid state hard drive is better than I had expected. I have used other external hard drives in the past and can easily say that this unit is equal to or greater than any other unit i have used. It boils down to three areas which drive me to this conclusion; size, sound and build.

The size of this unit is a little larger than a deck of cards. It does not require a lot of room to store. With that being said, it fits perfectly on top of my console or pc and does not look like an eye sore since its dark in color and does not draw the eye.

The second reason why i enjoy this hard drive is because it is whisper quiet. Having a the 3.2 capability, 2x2 set up, alongside of a whopping 1T storage size had me questioning if there would be a potential audible aspect, as the unit is as small as it is. I am also happy to say there this unit is silent.

Lastly is the durability. The hard outer shell of this solid state hard drive put my mind to rest when moving between locations. Other portable drives have a fabric or flimsy exterior. Not this one. Its exterior is built tough, even with rubber feet to assure a sound grip as to wherever it is sitting.

All in all, I recommend this unit because of its design, durability and whisper quiet sounds.

Wow, just wow. I am amazed such a thing exists with such raw speed. Keep in mind, this drive is designed as a gaming hard drive for fast load times but I am sure other users can put this bad boy to great use if you require an extremely fast (20 gbps) and reliable hard drive. I tried this review on a few computers to test performance… the test computers were a 2019 MacBook Pro 15 which supports USB-C 3.1 Gen 2, a 2018 Alienware R7 which also supports 3.1 Gen 2, and an Xbox One X at USB 3.0. I thought I had a device which supports the full 3.2 2x2 speeds but with all the USB rebranding it appears my devices that are 3.1 gen 2 which is now USB 3.2 gen 2 which is extremely confusing. So as a result my devices support a max of 10 gbps. I am not sure there are any motherboards on market which currently support 2x2 speeds of 20 gbps as all vendors I researched only show the 10gbps cap even for most custom builds I could find.

Unboxing: This hard drive comes in a small box which has shows the actual size of the product. The interior contains the hard drive, a USB-C to C cable, a USB-A to C cable and warranty documentation.

Build quality: The durability of this product is second to none. It is not designed for portability but appears to be designed to remain stationary. I am not saying you couldn’t carry it around but most of the portable types of these drives are sealed shut, this WD Black SSD appears to have little vents on the bottom to keep it cool. It is made out of metal and feels tough as can be with ridges and WD Black branding on the top. It simply looks cool next to your PC. The USB cables are a little short and on my desktops the hard drive was kind of hanging a little bit, luckily I had a longer Thunderbolt 3 cable sitting around which supported the full speeds needed. So I used that most of the time.

Use: No setup is needed. I first tried it on my MacBook Pro which supports USB 3.1 gen 2. I used Black Magic to benchmark and initially got speeds of 952 MB/s write and 926.8 read. I was blown away already being able to transfer 8 GB files in just over 8 seconds. My initial thoughts were that this is going to be a game changer for transferring videos and RAW photos being able to use it to work off of exclusively… but I remembered it is designed for gaming so moved toward that.

I installed it to my Alienware PC which supported similar USB speeds, I only got about 850 MB/s on the PC using Crystaldiskbench for some reason with the same USB 3.1 gen 2 support, but it was nothing to scoff at. After transferring Overwatch, Jedi Fallen Order, Doom Eternal and a few other games I gave it a shot. Overwatch ran smooth as can be with no loading stutters at all. The game loaded quickly but loading a level is hard to judge since there are often waiting rooms when getting into a game. Jedi the Fallen Order had similar issues since most of the loading times are integrated into cutscenes with dialog so it is hard to say if speeds were faster, but it again ran quickly and smooth. Doom eternal had noticeably quicker loading times overall. I later tried a game with huge loading times, Star Wars Battlefront II and Battlefield V. Times were still long but to me it felt like they were at least halved in comparison to the old SATA SSD they were loaded on.

The drive is kind of overkill when installed on and Xbox One X. It appears it only supports USB 3.0 so it’s speed is greatly limited. You will not see drastic speed differences but loading times will be decreased.

I did not see drastically different load times from my other PC I tried the games on but it was still far better than the original setup I had. I think a large limitation is the game design itself as most games integrate times for loading into the gameplay such as elevators, long hallways, slow moving dialog scenes, etc. Once these speeds are more common place perhaps games will adapt to it.

If nothing else, you can be certain that game elements will load quickly, there will be no stutter when textures are cached and so on.

Summary: This is a must have device for any gamer. Most computers are not able to take advantage of these speeds yet and there are no consoles ready for its ability yet. Next gen consoles like the Xbox One Series X and PS5 should support high speed interfaces so it is great for future proofing. If you have a brand new PC that supports USB 3.2 you are in for an amazing treat. Most high end PCs support 3.1 gen 2 right now and this will still give you amazing speeds (just be sure to use the right port, some are slower than others on PCs). Overall, this hard drive is worth the purchase if you are or are not a gamer. It has great potential for gamers and can be game changer for video / photo editing professionals.

I will just start by saying that from the price to the build quality to the performance, this drive obviously does not reflect your average portable drive. This drive is meant for the dedicated content creation professional or hardcore gamer, someone who demands top performance out of their equipment. In my opinion console users should skip; I fully detail why below.

My test platform for this drive was my custom gaming and content creation PC with a 2019 Asus ROG STRIX Z390-E GAMING motherboard with a USB 3.1 Gen 1 USB-C connection. Thus, I did not even come close to the 2000MB/s read/write speeds this drive can achieve through a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 interface. With my USB 3.1 Geb 1 interface, according to CrystalDiskMark7 I achieved a SEQ1M write speed of 1061MB/s and a write speed of 1019MB/s. What this means is that the bottleneck to achieving the top advertised speeds of this drive is my USB 3.1 Gen 1 interface and not the drive! I also tested the read/write speed of this drive over a USB 3.0 connection using the included USB-C to USB-A cable and had a read of 464MB/s and write of 465MB/s, once again demonstrating the bottleneck is in the connection and not the drive. Another test I performed was the copying of a 10GB folder from my Crucial P1 NVMe M.2 SSD drive in my computer to the WD P50 drive via the USB-A 3.0 and USB-C 3.1 Gen 1 connections I have available. Via USB-A 3.0, the drive copied the folder over at a sustained average rate of 340MB/s with no dips and over USB-C 3.1 Gen 1, I had a sustained average transfer rate of nearly double USB-A 3.0 at 600MB/s with no dips.

The summary of all of this is basically that this drive is going to absolutely knock the socks off any tasks that you throw at it for the average use case and with the connection via USB 3.2 Gen 2x2, this thing is going to be as blazing fast as an average NVMe SSD connected to a motherboard via M.2 connection.

All the numbers aside, the build quality of the drive itself is just incredibly high level. The WD Black series from Western Digital is something I have come to associate with high quality in general, and this drive continues to prove that. It is encased in a forged aluminum cover and to touch feels well-regulated in its temperature with sustained transfers during my testing. It has the toughness that would have me feeling secure about tossing it into my backpack and heading to the coffee shop without concern for its integrity. Furthermore, being an SSD, this drive has no moving parts unlike a standard portable HDD and thus will be even further suited to portability. For my use case, this is going to be a backup drive to my main drive on my gaming PC and will be partitioned for some of my photo and video editing projects and as a secondary Steam library folder for my games where load times are important (like Fallout 4, lol).

The only thing I will say in way of consideration for the buyer is that this drive CAN be used by current gen console users, but that doesn’t mean it SHOULD as a first or top choice. The problem is that current gen consoles like the PS4 and Xbox One X are not going to even come close to getting the full use out of this drive due to bottlenecking by the consoles’ USB-A connection interface. Thus, the money would likely be wasted here for most console gamers looking for expandability for their console game libraries. Console gamers would be better off with a larger portable hard drive like a WD Easystore or something along those lines. When the new consoles like the PS5 and Xbox Series X come out in 2020-2021, however, there might be justification for use of higher end portable SSDs like this WD Black P50 for library expansion since the read/write speeds won’t be as bottlenecked by the console/connection interface.

Overall, I am incredibly impressed with this drive and I cannot recommend it enough if this is something you are in the market for a high-end Windows PC or Apple PC. Hope this review helped you out and thanks for reading.

I had bought this console to play games until the PS5 comes out I sold my PS4 Pro because it would always disconnect off the WI-FI but this console here works great it doesn’t disconnect me off the WI-FI I use this system on a computer monitor 4K UHD the graphics look very nice I’m happy I got this PS4 console. I also love that it’s slim and doesn’t take much space light weight. I purchased as a pick up and Best Buy always comes through all my items are always give me 30 minutes wait until I get to pick up even though it gives you a one hour time frame.

It’s an awesome alternative for the ps5 right now and I really suggest it.

I went into this game with pretty high hopes to begin with, but it certainly exceeded even my high expectations. It feels like they took everything from the original Crash games on the PlayStation and made work together in perfect harmony.

The levels are well-designed, the music is excellent, the animations are expressive, and the whole game is much more difficult than you'd expect a game for kids to be. There's a lot to do and it feels great when you finally get the patterns down and know the best route to take to complete a level. Certainly among my top three favorite games I have ever touched on a PlayStation for sure!

The only drawback of this game I could find (and I really had to search hard for a drawback!) were a few instances of bad language but there's nothing really too much beyond what you might expect for an E10+ rating.

Despite this, I'd still highly recommend the purchase!

The first thing I do when I purchase any hard drive is check s.m.a.r.t. for errors and run the extended self test. Gsmartcontrol does not work on this drive but Passmark Diskcheckup will give you smart info and run the extended self test. Crystaldiskinfo will also give you the smart info but, as far as I know, won't run any tests.

Bought this for my 10 year old son's Xbox so he wouldn't have to delete games from his system in order to download a new game. It's excellent! He loves that it's super slim and he was able to hook it up on his own.

I purchased this drive for my Playstation 5 for external storage of Playstation 4 games library and hopefully in the future external backup of Playstation 5 games to offload the internal SSD (come on Sony give us a firmware update). The device aesthetic is very nice and I don't have any complaints about the build. The advertised read and write speeds are right in line with what Western Digital states are the speeds (see attached picture). I have seen people asking what drive is inside this external "WD_Black" series external drive. Well it's not a black series drive (Like the 8TB WD8001FZBX) but an HGST HUS728T8TALE6L4. This is not a bad thing as this is a data center-class hard drive and paying only $15-20 for a nice external enclosure. Be aware this is not 100% quiet as it is a full-size, higher-performing drive but is not annoying and probably cant be heard from 10 feet away if gaming from a distance. If you need an extremely quiet drive look at the Western Digital P10 Black series but you are not going to get this performance. I have to do further testing to see if the drive ever fully ramps down as it does seem like the platters tend to constantly spin just for longevity purposes.

Don’t buy a PS5 without this ! Sony didn’t tell you storage goes fast with PS4 games and media apps. If you sign up for PS Now your gonna need storage , BAD!!! And you can charge up your controllers freeing up usb slots on your game system. It just works hand and hand. Your gonna need at least 5GB of storage choose wisely

This WD Black external features a fast 7200rpm hard disk for fast transfers and fast seeking.

I have a 2tbs in my ps4, but combined with this external hard drive I know have 4tbs. I wish I would have brought this hard drive when I first got my ps4. Tell you what I will have it when I get ps5 can't wait.

So far, I’ve had no issues like others have stated. The ps4 works and runs flawlessly like it’s brand new.

My daughter said the PS4 works good but the discs do not insert very well. Also, some discs do not play either so she has to download instead.

I loaded 40 x box series x games on to the hardrive and it erased itself a week later and I lost my games . Also any game you save on this drive you can’t run without transferring to x box internal hard drive so it’s basically useless

Little flimsy I will be honest. However, it holds all my Blu-rays and video games. I just have to be careful to not really walk into it.

This item was terrible. It came in a bazillion pieces. Holes did not align. After spending about 30 minutes, we decided it wasn’t worth the effort and brought it to the dump. Don’t waste your time with this. One star rating is being ridiculously generous.

I just put this together today. It should only be worth $20.00. It's cheap wood and the screws break. Defective. Best Buy sucks with their return policy.
