A few changes would make it awesome

Sensor works great for what it is designed for, which is to alert you before your pipes freeze. I want to use this in my refrigerator and freezer. It only goes down to 0 F so it doesn’t work in a deep freeze. It reacts very quickly so you can’t have the fridge door open long.

    I hope so

Well, with temperatures over the last few months hovering in the 80's and 90's, these really haven't been put to the test. But every other SimpliSafe product I have purchased has worked to perfection.

Let's your smart home know if it is hot or cold

It works but you may not need it if you have a smart thermostat. The thermostat can tell you how hot or cold the home is. Could be useful or a waste of money depending on your home set up.

    Sensor worked great.

I used this in conjunction with the SimpliSafe home alarm/monitoring system to monitor the temperature of a vacation home remotely. The sensor worked great to provide me with the indoor temperature of the home (internal room). The SimpliSafe system does require the upgraded monitoring ($25/month) in order to see the remote temperature and to indicate the desire temperature setting.

    Nice hardware. Software is lacking.

This is the "apple" of digital thermostats and it's made by google (Nest's parent company).

It looks great on the wall. Has a solid feel to it and comes across as very well crafted. It would've been nice to have been able to compare out old thermostat to this one to see exactly how much we're saving on our oil bill but we're definitely going through less oil than we used to.

Installation was a breeze. I actually opened a chat with one of their reps to ask them a quick question about the unit and they pretty much insisted that they would stay connected with me until I completed the setup and tested everything out.

The configuration is a breeze too - at least it was for our heat-only system.

The major shortcoming is the software. There are some things that are just not intuitive like the eco settings and some things that just leave you scratching your head wondering what they were thinking when they wrote the code, like displaying what the target temp is more prominently than the current temp - there's a feature called farsight that will show you the current temp for a moment but then it goes back to the normal display.

The usage history is capped to ten days. Seriously. Like how much memory would it take to give us a month or even a year, it's just some raw data that shouldn't take up much space at all on the device.

The home/away feature works when it wants to. There have been times I've been like, "why is it freezing in here?" and opened the app to find the nest thinks I'm away from home and times when I've been out for hours and opened the app just for the heck of it to see if the furnace is running and it thinks I'm home and the heat's cranking.

We've had two of these installed for a little over a month and it still hasn't learned our schedule. It might have something to do with not knowing whether we're home or away, lollll, but either of these features should be pretty easy to make work any number of ways and have them work well but they just don't.

The app and web interface are nicely laid out and easy to use for the most part and from my experience with them, they seem to give you access to most of the controls and features that you'd have using the wheel on the thermostat itself, without having to stand there and scroll through everything with the notable exception of the farsight setting.

From what I can tell, you can't link two nests in different zones and get them to act smarter together, for instance to say hey the furnace is running for zone two, why not heat up zone one for a little bit too while you're at it. Maybe I'm missing something and by all means tell me if I am, but that seems like it'd be a nice feature to have.

It just feels really limited with what you can do with it and they've been out now for long enough where you think they'd have this thing feature packed with the ability to customize it a little more than what you get out of the box with this 3rd gen model.

I feel like the ecobee is probably a more robust option but just barely. That being said we did get two of these and I'm pretty happy with them ..... I'm just not satisfied if that makes sense. There's just a lot more I'd like to see these things be able to do that hopefully will be added via firmware or software updates as more people install them and clamor for more features.

    The absolute best smart thermostat

So I knew very little about this product when I decided to purchase my 1st one but what I did know was my home as many homes come with these absolutely inefficient thermostats so I bought this nest smart thermostat & absolutely love it

Benefits: affordable & really smart as it learns how hot or cold a person likes their home

Knows when you are coming home as registered by cell phone location unless you tell it not to

Custom daily down to 1/2 hour custom temp daily weekly schedule

Rebate of $75 from srp off your electric bill after 2 months so think about what you paid -$75. How cool is that!

I bought my parents this gold one & installed it at their home. Almost immediately I could tell home cooling way more efficiently

This product is amazing. I would recommend to everyone

    AMAZING customer support

this was my first time installing a thermostat at home on my own. i followed the instructions and when I noticed my very old Thermostat has so much more wires than what nest takes I contacted Nest customer support online using my cell phone and they helped my for about an hour untill Nest was installed and working.

They asked me for a picture of the old thermostat wiring and a picture for the wiring that was coming out of my HVAC room, and then sent me a diagram to my email address explaining which wires I should connect where. the whole process was a breeze and customer support person was great, professional, and patient.

the experience of installing this while someone who has the knowledge is with you along the way and holding your hand exceeded all my expectations.

The nest performance is very satisfying and accurate. you have modes for home, and away which can be easily set to save energy.

    I couldn't be happier.

Self install - google customer service is fire!

So, recently moved into a new to me home, and had a Nest in our previous home- LOVE IT.

Although we didn’t install the first one, we thought that it would be pretty easy.

To be honest, I think it would have been if I knew exactly what we had as far as HVAC system … we have an electric system with a heat pump… haven’t had one of those before buuuuttt the app walks you through everything…

The app told me once that it was unable to determine if we could install the nest and once that it was not compatible. As I was getting ready to return the thermostat (so dismal), I decided to contact google nest support and WOW, they were so awesome. They determined that our system was compatible and sent me an email of how I should wire the thermostat. It would pretty well, no complaints so far! Love it!

One heck of a smart devices

I purchased the Next gen 3 thermostat on a Sunday morning from Best Buy and it was delivered THE SAME DAY for free! Wow! Installation was super simple. Luckily I had an extra "C" wire not being used so I was able to attach that to the thermostat and on the furnace board to power the unit. Setup was easy and I loved how the screwdriver even had a magnet end to hold the screws a bit. App setup was smooth. No issues connecting to our wireless. Only thing that hung me up for a couple minutes was not knowing how to "select" the options one the screen. Turning the dial was ok, but I learned from a video online that to select you press around the sides of the display. Ah!!! That could have been better communicated maybe with a sticker on the device. System is so smart. It can run the fan a bit after the AC turns off to help push out remaining cool air. Doing the schedules on the app is pretty straightforward. It can give alerts if temp is too high or low and change the temps accordingly. This is going to be awesome.

    Love My Nest!!

Bought the Nest Thermostat hoping to save some money on our energy bill. Installation was the easiest thing possible, anyone can figure it out (just make sure you have the proper power switch turned off and check the wires for activity) When we first installed it, I actually thought I installed it incorrectly because the data being collected was telling me my AC unit was running for a good 14-15hrs straight daily!!...called my heating and cooling guy to make sure A) I installed it right and B) that my AC unit was functioning properly. when he checked my AC unit it was low on refrigerant. He topped that off and BAM my data (on Eco mode) shows my unit MAYBE runs 45m to an hour a day and even at times no usage at all for days!!!. I LOVE LOVE having a visual aid to my furnace/AC usage!!! Now we will just have to wait and see what the winter will bring...

This product was pretty pricey and I even considered getting my money back before installing it because of it's cost. BUT, reading reviews and seeing how this thermostat could save me so much more money in the long run I decided to give it a try and I am so glad I did!

I would highly recommend this product!!!

    Just what I needed

So far working great with my furnace. I have a two wire hook up and this thermostat uses power from the furnace to keep the battery charged with no extra wires needed. The app interface is good. Installation was easy with plenty of support if needed. Now I’ll know for sure that the temperature in my house is good when I travel during the winter. Has some other good bells and whistles but that was low on my priority scale.

    Temperature not accurate.

Everything on the Nest from the install to the scheduling is easy to do and most of the features are pretty nice. There are two issues I have with the Nest. The first is you can't change the frequency in which the fan cycles on. It only gives you the option to come on every hour. You can select run time for 15,30,45 minutes up to 1 hour but that's it. It would be nice to be able to select every 1,2,3, or 4 hours just so the fan isn't coming on all the time. I'm sure this can be fixed with a software update. The second issue and this is a big problem is that the current room temperature is inaccurate. The Nest reads 2-3°F above actual room temp. I am currently on my 3rd Nest (Generation 3) in a 20 day period. The 1st read 75°F for over 24 hours even though there was no way it was 75° so I exchanged it. I installed the 2nd Nest and after having it for a day I noticed that it felt a little chilly in my house. I looked at the screen and it read 71° but it seemed cooler. So I put two of my previous thermostats (a Honeywell VisionPRO 8000, and a Comcast digital) and a digital food thermometer next to the Nest to compare the readings and all 3 read 68°F. (I'm no pro but I think if 3 thermometers read the same then I would say they are accurate) I called Nest and the technician said it can take up to 14 days to "learn" the temp so I waited to see if it would correctly calibrate. It didn't, and I exchanged it for my 3rd Nest hoping the other two were defective. It's been 2 days and no luck. This one is reading 2-3°F high as well. The tech also told me that the Nest's are programmed to have a 2° range. I understand this when heating and cooling so you're furnace or A/C isn't tuning on and off every 5 minutes however there should be no range on the accuracy of the actual room temp. It's either accurate or it's not. I'll give this a few more days and call Nest and see if they have a software update to accurately calibrate it. They say this has 12 sensors. How is it that 12 sensors are less accurate then a cheap $50 thermostat with 1? I don't understand.. I've included some pictures showing the temp differences. My Nest reads "current temp" 71°F and the other 3 thermometers read current room temp as 68°F. That is unacceptable.

Electric Heat in the 21st Century!

As technology continues to advance, smart thermostats have become all the rage...unless you were trying to control electric baseboard or similar heat. I have been searching high and low for the last couple of years and finally there's a solution. Say hello to the Mysa Smart Thermostat! This is THE smart thermostat for electric heating systems.

The Mysa website provides a tool that confirms whether your electric system is supported. Once confirmed, it's time to replace that antique thermostat. The Mysa unit is a very modern looking thermostat with a flat glass display with no buttons or moving parts. It's a bit on the larger size, but is welcome as it perfectly covers the existing box and surround.

In the box - Mysa Smart Thermostat, mounting screws / caps and a Welcome/Quick Start Guide. That's it, and that's all that is needed! Installation is listed as 15 minutes and that was just about what it took. The installation process is so straight forward. Always start by turning off the power to the existing thermostat, uninstall the existing 4 wire thermostat and make sure to connect the Mysa to the correct wires. The online app and the included guide walk through these steps. Mysa also provides tech support if needed.

Mysa App - Once the new thermostat is connected, all you need to do is download the app, in my case from the Apple App Store. Create an account, flip the power back on and walk through the setup process. It's that simple! The Mysa also supports a number of voice assistants including Google Assistant, Alexa and other apps like IFTTT and Apple HomeKit.

The touchscreen provides the essentials for controlling the temperature and the numbers and arrows are large and easy to read. The screen's brightness is adjustable within the App. There are a number of other setting that are adjustable in the App including Setpoint levels, Eco Mode, Button Locking, Scheduling, etc.

    Pros:

    - Easy installation and operation

    - Online App for control while not home

    - Modern look and design

    - Energy efficiency controls to help save money

    - Great App-based and online support if needed

    Cons:

    - So far I haven't found any in terms of setup, operation or build quality

The Mysa Smart Thermostat is a perfect solution for updating older electric home heating. As electric heat can be very expensive, that ability to set schedules and manage the thermostat remotely are potential money-savers. The modern design and great build quality also update the look of your home. I've already had a number of compliments on the Mysa unit. I would recommend the Mysa Smart Thermostat to anyone with qualifying electric heat.

From Ugly to Elegant and Modern!

Wanted to bring our heater controls up to date and get rid of the old 1980's dial style. Love the fact that everything can be controlled wirelessly from anywhere with my phone through the app. Gives the ability to schedule when and what to turn the heat up or down to no matter whether I'm home or not. Saving on electricity turning the heat down at night and having it scheduled to turn up and warm up right before waking in the morning was a blessing to say the least as well as having it cut down while I was gone and having it warm by the time I got back to.

It was super simple to set up as you can see by the picture it's only 3 separate wires and a few minutes to set up the app on your phone and you're good to go.

The phantomed LED looks great on the crisp white panel. Bright or dimmed whatever your preference may be. and the numbers are big enough to see across tho room with ease.

I loved the app. Everything was very plain and simple and had every possible feature I could ask for as far as controls for the system

Would highly recommend to others looking to upgrade their out of date controls

I have been waiting 10 years for this kind of tech

Easy set up. Great paper instructions. App was helpful, step by step set up. I have for 10 years tried to purchase a non-dial thermostat. How nice will this be. Inwont know til winter but having heating bills over $200 a month becuase if i left it on and left the house for 12 hrs....I was just wasting money. Looks great too and fits in a normal socket, or electrical in wall box.

    Heat when you need it

I have a second home in North Carolina and a base heater that needed a better thermostat and it helps that it's smart. Fairly easy to install, I wasn't very difficult but if you don't have a background in electrician work be sure to get a professional. It's just a safe bet. Amazing product I totally recommend it for everyone.

Sleek, Simple Smart Thermostat for Baseboard Heat

Finally, there is a reliable and well designed “Smart Thermostat” for high-voltage electric Baseboard and electric air-forced heaters. It works seamlessly with its own app, can be scheduled to turn itself on and off, and can be set to recognize when you are home or away. It also works with Amazon’s Alexa, Google Assistant and Apple’s HomeKit. The Mysa can easily replace the old beige dial control and is sized to fit perfectly into a standard gang box. It works with a four- wire system that can either be a 240 v or 120 v system. The thermostat does not work with a two-wire system. It is also not compatible with any 12 v to 24 v systems that have been designed for oil furnaces, natural gas furnaces or boilers.

After downloading the Mysa app, I just followed the easy instructions to pair the thermostat to the app. Once paired, the thermostat automatically performed a software update. After the software was updated the app was then able to totally control the thermostat. It is important to note that the thermostat can also be controlled manually should the need arise to have to do so. Otherwise for me, it is great to just schedule the thermostat to turn the heat on 10 minutes before my morning shower and turn the baseboard heat off within 30 minutes. I also do not have the problem of accidentally leaving the baseboard heat on and leaving town for the day or weekend. If that were to happen, I can easily turn the baseboard heater off by using the app.

The app also guides you through installation and if there are any differences in the installation diagrams and your actual setup, customer service is there to assist. If you do have a different situation, customer service is a little hard to get a straight answer from. This might be due to the fact that I was installing in the evenings and on the weekend. However, there is not an actual phone number to call for assistance, you just have to send an email and hope that someone in their customer service office is conscientious enough to thoroughly read your question and make an honest attempt to answer it completely and timely in order to actually help you with the install.

I have had a smart thermostat for my heat pump HVAC for several years. By installing the Mysa for my bathroom baseboard electric heat, I now have complete control of setting, scheduling, and managing the control of my home’s temperature.

Super easy and intuitive. Homekit compatibility is a bonus. I would recommend this to anyone that can't find a thermostat (a pretty good smart one at that) for their baseboards.

    Difficult product to review!

This is a difficult product to review for the simple reason that it either works or it doesn't. Not much in between.

I needed ONE battery to replace a dead CMOS battery in an antique computer that I keep running to access the truly ancient 6" and 3" "floppy" drives if you remember what those are! Plus a favorite games DUNE I and DUNE II are so old as to not function on newer systems.

At any rate my machine utterly failed to boot one day and it took me forever to remember that there was a CMOS battery that I'd never replaced. UNTIL NOW.

That's the good part of the review -- the not so good part is needing to buy TWO. By the time this replacement battery dies (hopefully not soon) the second will likely be lost and worthless.

The essential addition to your Nest Smart Home.

I rate this product as excellent, 5 stars, due to the face that this is the essential item to completing your Nest thermostat, and Smart Home. When we first purchased our Nest thermostat, we had trouble keeping the house a consistent temperature. If I had the heat set at 70, the upstairs would get to 70 and shut off based on the temp the Nest thermostat was reading at the thermostat. With some adjustments to our vents in the home by closing some off and opening others more, we now have it under control, but mostly thanks to the Nest Temp Sensor. Having the ability to determine which sensor is the primary sensor in the Nest application, makes this an absolute necessary purchase at its price point. We now are able to keep the basement and upstairs zero to one degree apart from one another. For anyone with a split level, two level, or multi-level home, this should be at the top of your shopping list when considering the Nest thermostat.

    Nest thermostat and sensors

I purchased a extra nest sensor and now I have nest thermostat and three sensors. I love having for locations in my house to be able to see the temp in a curtain room and able to set the thermostat to work off a sensor in a pacific room or floor off the house at different time of the day or night.

Great addition to new Nest E.

Bought with the Nest Thermostat E. House layout has the thermostat in a room with a vaulted ceiling, making it difficult to reach desired temps in other rooms, specifically at night. This allows us to monitor and set schedule to obtain desired temps.

Does what it says (and that is it!!)

    Great concept, poor implementation!

Guessing a lot of people have this problem with forced-hot-air systems. The primary thermostat is on the main level and the (main) bedroom is on an upper lever - which, in the dead of winter/summer has a radically different temp from that main level.

For instance, look at the uploaded pic. Main level is 63 and the Master Bedroom is 53. Not a problem during the day when no one is there but before bed you'd love to be able to set the Bedroom temp to what you like!? (yes single zone the the main level will get (much) hotter.)

Nest will allow you to use the sensor for anyone (or all) of 4 pre-defined time slots (morning, afternoon, evening, night) BUT these times are preset and can not be changed.

    Pre-set times:

    Morning: 7am to 11am

    Midday: 11am to 4pm

    Evening: 4pm to 9pm

    Night: 9pm to 7am

Sooooo, if I want to use the bedroom sensor to warm up the room, before bed, I would have to have the rest of the house sweltering from 4 to 9 or 9 to 7.

Seems like - for as technologically advanced as these are; you'd be able to say bring my bedroom temp up to "X" at bedtime then revert back to the main thermostat!?!?

Bottom line: for $40 bucks you get an expensive thermometer that tells you what the temp in that room is but really doesn't give you a way to truly "fine-tune" it.

    Excellent thermostat

I did a lot of research and I was going to get a Nest, but the HVAC company that we have been working with recommended Ecobee.

Before getting any smart thermostat, please check your furnace for a C wire.

My thermostat setup had the humidistat right below it. The wall plate the came with the Ecobee Smart Thermostat was big enough to cover the thermostat and humidistat holes.

The HVAC company installed it for me. If you are not familiar with installing thermostats, please have an HVAC company install it.

After installation, I was ablE to program it through the app. There is a sensor built into the thermostat and it comes with an extra external sensor, which I put in my office. I am able to see what the temperatures are in each room.

After a good furnace cleaning and thermostat installation, My HVAC is working better and I have better control over my heating and cooling. With Alexa built in, I moved my Echo Dot into another room. The speakers on the thermostat are awesome for a small device.

I used some wall paint to touch up where the old thermostat was. I plan on painting the walls next summer.

    Replaced Honeywell Lyric

The house I bought came with a Honeywell Lyric and was good for about a year and a half. Then it seemed to have trouble staying connected with Alexa as well as other wifi connection problems. Finally got tired of it and looked at the favorable reviews of this thermostat and got it. We already have an Alexa show and couple of dots so didn't need the Ecobee model with built in Alexa.

Installation was very easy and set up was a breeze. It was easy to connect to Alexa. This has all the eco- friendly and learning features that are in other smart thermostats although so far the weather here has been mild so I haven't had to interact with it much. So far so good.

    Impressive smart thermostat so far!

This is my personal review on the Ecobee3 Lite smart thermostat, which I got during a great promotion ran by Best Buy which included a free Echo Dot. I've had this thermostat for just about a month now and have been trying to learn most of its features since then. The first thing you must know is that this device requires a C-wire for power since it does not have a backup battery. This may be a challenge or a problem for a person who has little-to-none knowledge of how HVAC systems work as it will require the user to run an included adapter (Power Extender Kit) from your HVAC system which will eventually provide power to the Ecobee3 Lite thermostat. The instructions are very straight forward but again, if you do not feel comfortable opening your HVAC system and connecting the wires to the PEK, I would recommend to hire a licensed technician to do the work or buy a different smart thermostat that does not require a C-wire. Otherwise, the installation takes roughly half an hour (which is what it took me to complete with no prior experience of replacing/installing a thermostat).

Out of the box, you get the thermostat, wire labels, a white backplate (in case you need to cover any holes from your previous thermostat), the Power Extender Kit (PEK, in case your thermostat does not have a C-wire), a backplate (to connect the wires), a couple of screws & wall anchors, and the installation manual. You will need a precision screw driver to remove wires from the old thermostat, a 3/16" drill bit, a phillips screw driver and a drill to facilitate the installation. If you do not have a cordless/corded drill, you can still get around with the installation but will take some additional time & effort. Remember to always follow safety procedures before working with electricity around your house to avoid serious injuries.

Now onto the features I've tried so far. The Ecobee3 Lite supports a wide variety of third-party integrations such as Amazon Alexa, Apple Home Kit, Google Assistant to name a few. This gives a wide range of users to be able to control their smart thermostat with their voice, smart phone or automation. When you are initializing setting up the device, you are greeted with an Ecobee welcome message. You then have to give it a name, configure your Wireless network for communication, and most importantly, register your device. The device has three different comfort settings; Home, Away, and Sleep. These settings can be modified to your needs which can then be added to your weekly schedule with a specific time to run them. If there is one annoying thing I do not like so far is the fact that you cannot remove all comfort settings for a specific day from your weekly schedule. It must have at least one comfort setting to run unless you turn off the HVAC system from the thermostat. The thermostat by default comes with the "Smart Recovery" feature enabled, which Ecobee support said this feature allows your thermostat to understand your AC/heating pattern in how long it takes for your home to get to the desired temperature from your schedule. The thermostat takes into account the performance of the HVAC equipment relative to the effects of the inside temperature & predicts how long it will take to bring your home to a given temperature. This basically means that if you have your schedule set to "Away" mode from 8AM - 5PM (to be within a certain temperature range before it turns on your AC/heater), and then starting at 5PM you have it set to "Home" (again to be at a certain temperature range), it can still turn on your AC/heater during the "Away" mode in order to get to the desired temperature by the time you get home at 5PM, for instance. I do not like this "Smart Recovery" feature as the purpose of the "Away" schedule I set up is so that the A/C is never on while I'm not home. If you are like me, you can turn off this feature directly from the thermostat by going to Main Menu > Settings > Preferences > Heating/Cooling Smart Recovery. I also like the fact that their software is very similar across all platforms (mobile apps, website & thermostat screen), this makes it a lot easier to navigate around without having to learn it all over again when using a different device. You can also restrict access control to the thermostat by setting up a code in order to access the system. This is great if you have kids in the house or if using in a shared environment such as an office where only certain individuals may have access to change its settings without having to install a lock box on.

The Ecobee3 Lite supports the proprietary room sensors, which can be added to different rooms and balance the temperature around your house. This is probably more suitable for two-story homes or bigger homes where temperature ranges drastically at certain times of the day. If you have a newer home with an open-floor plan, these sensors may not be very useful. Below is a summary of the Pros and Cons I have found out so far:

    Pros:

    - Compatible with Amazon Alexa and Apple's Home Kit & Google Assistant.

    - Uses geofencing to detect when you enter/exit a certain zone (configured by user) which will either trigger the thermostat to turn on or off.

    - Wireless connectivity compatible to 802.11 b/g/n @ 2.4GHz

    - 3-year warranty (that's two more years than the Nest)

    - Compatible with most HVAC systems (see Ecobee's website for additional info)

    - Schedule "Vacation" mode to overwrite your weekly schedule and keep HVAC system off if necessary.

    - Intuitive & seamless integration of their software across all platforms (smartphone app, online page, & thermostat's home screen)

    - Fast-response & bright touchscreen.

    - Access controls allows only those individuals with the configured code to change its settings.

    - Supports room sensors to add around the house and balance the temperature.

    - Useful data reports about your home's temperature & system information.

    - Can set reminders to change furnace filters & HVAC maintenance.

    - Great design.

    Cons:

    - Does not come with a backup battery, hence requiring a C-wire (this may be a problem for older homes).

    - Cannot create additional custom settings.

    - Cannot remove custom settings from weekly schedule.

    - Does not support dehumidifiers (this is more of a personal preference)

Plenty of settings and love the reporting

I originally wanted this thermostat for the ability to set the differential temp range between on and off. This was going to help me with short cycling from my old Honeywell thermostat. It did help and has plenty of settings you can adjust. It met my needs 100%.

Now the reporting is amazing. You can login and see when your AC or heat was on. It has a history of on, fan on, and outside temp. Then it can provide a monthly report of how efficient your system is. 100% glad I bought this thermostat! Picture is an example of the on off history it can show you; this day was hot and can see how long the AC was on.

Works fine with Apple Home Kit.

I use the Apple Home kit eco system at my house so I like being able to control the temperature of my home by using voice commands. I don’t care to use any of the programming options like setting the temp when I come and go or settings for day or night. For me it’s just a way to control the temp by voice instead of using my iPhone app or getting up to change it manually.

    Very easy to install...highly recommended

This thermostat is incredibly easy to install, and with the power company rebate, the cost was free. If I subtract the time it took me to get my tools and a ladder from the garage to access the furnace in the attic, install time was 4 minutes. My previous thermostat had three wires connected: W, R, G, so all I had to do was remove the old thermostat, install the new one and connect the previously unused blue wire to the "C" terminal on the thermostat and also inside the furnace. It couldn't have been simpler. I try to keep the use of the furnace as minimal as possible, so I set a daily schedule for 52° at 6AM, 9AM, 5PM, and 10PM. When I want to turn the furnace on, I'll ask Alexa to turn it on. It will heat to my "home" temperature of 68° and then will set it back to 52° (away) for the next cycle. Works great, so that if I leave home after getting up and forget to turn it off, it will turn it back down to 52° at 9AM.

Five reasons I love my ecobees!

I recently installed 6 “ecobee smart thermostats with voice control” and I love them! It was a bigger project than anticipated, but well worth the effort.

    My Five Favorite Features

1.The ecobee comes with a remote temperature and occupancy sensor. My ecobee reads the temperature in the living room where I sit and ignores the temperature in the hall where the thermostat is.

    2. The design of the ecobee touch screen is elegant. A dark rounded square screen displays the room temperature in large numbers along with the time of day, outdoor temperature, and a weather icon. When you walk up to the ecobee it comes alive and displays a slide for the setpoint and icons for quick Home/Away, detailed weather, voice control, and menus.

    3. My six networked ecobees can be monitored and adjusted from an app or a web portal.

    4. Ecobee lets you display helpful graphs of, for example, room temperature over time along with setpoint, outdoor temperature, and an indication of when the thermostat was calling for heat. See pictures at the end of this post.

    5. Voice control is more useful than expected. I don’t have to be in a room to change the temperature. I just say “Hey Google, warm up the Master Bedroom” from anywhere.

One complaint is that the slide for the setpoint never seems to wind up where I’m aiming.

    Comparison Shopping

I bought the ecobee instead of the Nest Learning Thermostat because it includes a remote sensor and can produce energy reports and graphs. The ecobee thermostat dedicated power approach is more reliable than the Nest’s power stealing scheme. With the ecobee schedule, I am in control and I know what is going on. In contrast, a learning thermostat like the Nest could learn a wrong schedule or hide what it has learned.

    Installation and Setup

The ecobee requires a “C” wire for 24 VAC power, which many HVAC systems already have. My old thermostats did not have a C wire.

My five heat-only zones each had two unused wires running from the basement to the thermostat. With the help of tech support I bought two 24 VAC transformer and ran power to the ecobees on the C and Rc terminals. (Max 3 ecobees per transformer)

For my one heat plus AC zone I found the C wire on the AC air handler and ran it to the ecobee on an unused white wire to the C terminal on the thermostat. I sent a photo of my air handler wiring to tech support and they sent it back annotated and talked me through it. See photo. Tech support was excellent - patient, knowledgeable, and helpful.

Mounting the ecobee is simplified by a built-in bubble level. I used the optional back plate to cover over unpainted areas from the old thermostat.

Setup was easy. The ecobee senses which terminals are in use and shows you a diagram to confirm. The hardest part was typing my WiFi password on the small screen. To pair the smart sensor with a thermostat use the app to scan a QR code on the sensor.

Twelve ways I am Saving Energy

I am running a schedule to turn down heat when rooms are unused. My old thermostats were so hard to program that I did not run a schedule.

I am tweaking the schedule to turn down heat. It is so easy to program the schedule that I’ll jump in and tweak it if I see a chance to save a half hour of heat.

I am turning down heat when I leave a room or when someone leaves the house. I just say “Hey Google, cool down the Living Room” even if I am already in another room.

I am overriding the schedule. If we go to bed early, I say “Hey Google, good night” to turn down all zones. If we leave the house, I say “Hey Google, I’m leaving.” to run the “Away” settings.

Ecobee senses if a room is unoccupied for a couple of hours and then runs the “Away”settings.

I am warming rooms up just as I need them and only for as long as I need them. For example, before shower time “Hey Google, warm up the master bath” and after “Hey Google, turn on the master bath schedule.''

Constant monitoring allowed me to realize rooms were warm when they should not be - a problem with my flow-check valves. I will replace the flow-check valves on my boiler and eliminate this unwanted heat.

I am not overheating rooms that are otherwise warmed up by human activities and electronics. The remote sensor reads the occupied room, not the unoccupied hallway.

I am not relying on too-generous guesses about preheating. The ecobee learns how long it takes to bring a room up to temperature and if you say you want 65F at 6:00 am, the room will be at temperature then.

By observing when the thermostat calls for each room and watching the outdoor temperature I am identifying which rooms lose heat the fastest and considering insulation.

If I forget to turn down the heat, I can do so remotely anywhere and anytime from the app or the web portal.

I can easily check if the heat was unnecessarily left on by asking "hey google, what does master bedroom say?

Five ways I am more comfortable

The remote sensor delivers the heat I want at my location.

I can remotely preheat such as warming up the office from the gym as I finish my workout.

“Smart Recovery” preheats a room so it is at temperature when the schedule calls for it.

There are no longer hot spots in the house.

I have the comfort of knowing what my system is doing when and seeing as much detail as I want.

Voice Control: the Good and the Bad

I was not excited about voice control when I bought the ecobee but it has turned out to be much more useful than expected. The ecobees have Alexa built in so you can talk directly to the thermostat and get a voice response. Alexa is a bit of a nag. The day after installation the I found the ecobees flashing turquoise and blue. I asked “Alexa, what’s up?” and she said there were new albums released by two of my favorite bands. So I turned off “shopping notifications” and the next day I got a different alert, this one green and relating to a news report. I just don’t want my thermostat to alert me unless it is HVAC related.

I was already using Google Assistant so I use it instead of Alexa. As a result, I must speak to one of the smart speakers I have in my home or speak to my phone. I also find the language more natural: “Hey Google, what does kitchen say?” versus “Alexa, ask ecobee the kitchen temperature.” Finally, Google Assistant lets me group commands into routines. For example, when I say “OK Google, I’m leaving” it turns down all six thermostats and turns off two lights.

The ecobee is the best product I’ve bought this year and I recommend it to anyone who does not mind doing a bit of wiring. Who knew you could love a thermostat?

    Excellent product

Excellent product beyond my expectations. My first choice was Ring, but I picked Ecobee that the decision I made is the best in my experience so far. The replacement with my 25 year old digital thermostat was so simple as 1234! I would like to caution all DIY folks that to switch off your fan along with the main breaker. Otherwise it may blow the fuse from furnace panel by touching the wire tips together while removing it. Over I am happy with this.

This thing is awesome and it is replacing one that was 30 years old. I thought it would be difficult to install this but with one phone call to their technician for a wire check I had this thing up and working in less than twenty minutes.

Works great, but senses the dog

It came with the best installation directions, that included videos for some of the steps, and interactive ways to figure out “how do I know?” questions for people inexperienced with electrical projects. As a single woman, these directions were the easiest to follow of any electrical projects I’ve done in the house. The optional faceplate was helpful to have, since the ecobee wasn’t big enough to cover up the old wall markings. The functionality of the program itself is pretty simple and easy to use. and it looks great on the wall. Also, ecobee offers an automatic delivery of furnace filters, synced with their thermostat records, so they get delivered when it’s time to replace. The cost is cheaper than I can find high quality filters in a home improvement store and they don’t appear to be cheap generic quality either. This offer is fantastic for someone like me who is always forgetting to buy filters ahead of time. Cons: I’ve noticed that the temperature readings are about 3-4 degrees higher than the readings that other thermostats in my house provide. For instance, the tower fan in my bedroom has a thermostat in it and when it reads the bedroom temp as 75, the ecobee sensor says the bedroom temp is 72. So I’ve had to make some modifications to my desired temperature settings to accommodate for that. Also, when using the smart home feature, I’ve noticed that the sensors think I’m home when I’m not because it senses the movement of my large 80 lb. dog wandering the house. So the HVAC runs while I’m not home, which is counterproductive to the point of using the smart home feature. It takes about 30 days before the eco+ smart home feature kicks in. I was expecting to enable the geofencing feature with the eco+ software, to fix the problem with the dog triggering the sensors while I’m not home, but after downloading the eco+ software, I haven’t yet found the geofencing option that I had read about prior to purchasing this brand of thermostat. So that is disappointing, but I’m still hopeful that the option will appear after I get my first usage report. I’ve had the thermostat for about 5 weeks. The eco+ has been enabled for 2 weeks now. Overall I am pleased with it. The house temperature does feel more even than it did with my old thermostat. But once I stop working from home and return to a normal work-life, the sensor issue with my dog could become more problematic. Time will tell.

Smarter Than a Lot of People I Know

Our furnace, air conditioner and thermostat were all replaced in 2006, in a house built in 1985. I don’t remember if the thermostat wiring was replaced at that time or not. Our current thermostat is a very simple set-back thermostat that runs on alkaline batteries and does not use a C wire. I happen to have all of the manuals and installation instructions for all of our HVAC products, and that helps to sort out the installation and set-up process of this Honeywell thermostat. Our high-efficiency Trane brand furnace has a C wire terminal, marked “B/C”. The old set-back thermostat required four wires to hook it up, but luckily our thermostat wiring is a five-conductor cable. To install this Honeywell RTH9585 thermostat, I only had to utilize the unused fifth wire in the cable and hook it up to the appropriate terminal on the furnace circuit board and I had my needed C wire connection (this is a simplification of what I actually had to do, but in essence is what the end result was). This made me happy because if I had to use the alternative hook up with the green wire, I would lose the ability to use the fan continuously (according to the “C Wire Addendum” that comes with the User Guide) and that is something that I occasionally do depending on the season and the weather.

When mounting the thermostat wallplate to the wall, check to see if either of the screw locations will hit a stud (one of mine did) as the included screws are long enough to pass through typical 1/2” thick drywall. If you just go ahead and drill two 3/16” holes for the drywall anchors, and hit a stud, the 3/16” hole drilled will be too big to use the screw by itself. If a hole lands on a stud, drill a 7/64” or 3/32” hole and you can use just the screw without using the plastic anchor.

The thermostat body snaps onto the wallplate with a lot of pressure. I suggest snapping the thermostat on and off the wallplate numerous times before mounting the wallplate to the wall as this will make it easier to pull the thermostat from the wallplate in the future if you need to remove it.

The one thing missing from this thermostat is a larger wallplate trim ring to cover holes left over from the old thermostat installation. I fabricated my own from a piece of sheet styrene purchased from a hobby shop (see picture). My old Lux thermostat came with one, and I’m guessing it would have cost Honeywell less than $0.25 to include one. Kind of an oversight on a $200 item if you ask me.

Once you get over the wiring hurdle, installation, set-up and programming of this Honeywell thermostat is really easy. Their web site is well done, the instruction manual is well written, and the menus and walk-through on the thermostat itself are all exceptionally well done. Honeywell, whose name was once synonymous with home thermostats, I feel has been under pressure in recent years from a number of different thermostat manufacturers, but they have really redeemed themselves with this model. The only thing that is really missing is geofencing capability, but after doing some reading about this feature, I’m not so sure it is something I would find useful. I have had a few times where the app on my phone appears to be unresponsive to my commands. If I close the app and reopen it, it works fine, so I have gotten in the habit of closing it once I make my adjustment and then open it again in the future when I need to use it. We are also having a little difficulty figuring out how to set up my wife’s phone to allow her to make remote adjustments to the thermostat that is registered with my email address. I’m sure it is something simple we have overlooked, but it is a little frustrating nonetheless.

The main thing I like about this thermostat versus the competition is all the information that is displayed on the screen “at idle”. When you haven’t used the thermostat for a bit, the display dims slightly, but is still very legible without needing to be touched. The following information is available on the “Home” screen without having to scroll through different displays and/or menus: current temperature, set temperature, outdoor temperature, both indoor and outdoor humidity, current time, and the time when the next programmed change takes place. A quick tap of the outdoor temperature gets you more current weather details and the forecast for 6 and 12 hours in the future - quick and easy when you are headed out the door and want to know the need for a coat or umbrella.

The RTH9585 is a very full featured thermostat that can do just about anything a homeowner would want or need an HVAC controller to do. I’m going to just talk about the features for residential use. Business use is the other alternative, but I suspect most business owners will just have a contractor install a thermostat of the contractor’s choice and won’t go shopping for one on their own. Obviously the thermostat can follow a set schedule of temperature changes for each day of the week (meaning each of seven days can be different from the others), but you can also change from the typical four schedules per day to just two if that is all you need. There is a fan option to run randomly about 35% of the time to circulate the air in the house. This is a nice option compared to having to run the fan continuously (which is still an option with this thermostat). There is a setting for the thermostat to change over automatically from heating to cooling. There are reminders for the filter and humidifier pad. You can set a vacation hold until a certain date and time and the thermostat will heat or cool your house for your return. There is a mode to allow you to clean the screen for 30 seconds without disturbing any settings. There is a lock mode that allows partial lockout (only temperature can be changed) or full lockout and you can also set a password to unlock the thermostat. Honeywell’s “Smart Response Technology” that anticipates ramp-up time to reach a given temperature by a specific time gives you the option of turning this feature off. The display can show Fahrenheit or Celsius temperatures and 12-hour or 24-hour time with Daylight Saving Time turned on or off. There are also settings specific for using the thermostat in a business setting. The thermostat will work without Wi-Fi, but you do lose some of the features. You can also set your account to send you email alerts if the temperature or humidity go outside of the range you specify. The phone app also gives you the option of voice control and the Honeywell Total Connect Comfort App will interface with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, IFTTT, and SmartThings. Oh yeah, I almost forgot, you can change the color of the screen to match your decor. Ours is set on black background with white lettering as I like easy-to-read contrast since I have gotten older.

I can recommend this thermostat to the average and above do-it-yourselfer and I don’t think there is anyone who would be disappointed with the feature set this product offers.

    Nice choice

As Honeywell was the original product, we decided not to get absorbed with all the hype (Ecobee or Nest) and stay with the original and upgrade. Simple features, plate fits closely to the wall where others extend out. Clean and illuminated. Works like the previous version, only has app features. TIPS: remove the previous thermostat and confirm if you have a "C" wire connector. VERY important. Wires are simple to install but take your time to identify precisely which coincide to the proper location. TAKE A PHOTO BEFORE YOU BEGIN REMOVING ANY WIRES! (for reference). Also, be sure you are able to identify the specific unit you currently have; either heat pump or forced air. This will be important when programming your unit otherwise it will not operate correctly. Forget the Tech Support; time consuming and it seems they try to read from information they have available. Although polite, would not consider them any more savy than you are (consider YouTube if you need help). Very pleased with this unit and at a cost savings price from other units!

Good thermostat for a vacation home.

I really like the way this thermostat is laid out and how it functions. I purchased it for a family vacation home. It allows me to easily check the temperature in the house and change it as required remotely. I like that it can be changed to a schedule when the house is occupied and a static temperature when it's unoccupied. I do wish there was a temperature spread mode that could switch between Cool and Heat automatically that didn't require using the schedule but it is easy enough to just check the app and make changes as required.

The app is quite easy to use once you become familiar with it. If you want to get more info at a glance, you can go to the website. The website makes programming a schedule much easier. There is also a way to allow others to access the account so my family members can set temps before they arrive at the house. The display indicates not only indoor temperature, it also indicates the outdoor temperature as well as indoor/outdoor humidity.

It was fairly easy to install, however, the video and instructions explaining the onscreen setup didn't match what was on our screen 100%. There was an extra question regarding the efficiency of our fan unit. Our fan unit is over 20 yrs old and there was no efficiency rating on the unit that I could find. I also couldn't find the manual online. So I had to guess that it was under 90% efficient. Additionally, the touch screen is not very responsive. Sometimes it takes 3-5 pokes of the screen to get a touch to register. That is my biggest issue with this thing.

I really like the larger always-on screen. I use a Nest thermostat in my office and like the look of the Honeywell and the info it provides better than the minimalis Nest display. It is also easier for my elderly father to operate. The Honeywell was also $50 less expensive than the Nest when I made my purchase. All in all I would recommend it. Especially to people who are already familiar with Honeywell thermostats like me.

    Very Nice

I'm very happy with this thermostat. It was *fairly* easy to install and set up.

I recommend setting aside a couple of hours for the install. It most likely won't take that long to install start to finish, but I would allow extra time in case you run into any issues, or if you are not familiar with installing a thermostat.

Honeywell's instructions are great and easy to follow. I also went to their YouTube channel and reviewed their video on how to install. They are very well done and easy to follow.

The one thing you want to make sure you have is a C (common) wire. This powers the unit. Our home was built in 2016 so I thought for sure we'd have one. When I first removed our existing programmable thermostat, however, I only found 4 wires and not the 5 recommended. There was a way to use the G (ground) wire for the power both in the instructions and on their channel, but it our case it would not have been easy to do. Fortunately, I did find a C wire back in the wall and was able to install with no further issues.

Setting up the unit once installed was a snap. It was just following the questions on screen. It was simple to register the unit with Honeywell as well (this is required for remote access to the unit). You are able to set up multiple people to use the thermostat remotely or you can limit it to just one account. You can also download their app and control it via your phone/tablet. You can lock the programming with a PIN if needed (though you don't get to choose the PIN). You can set up temporary holds as well as permanent holds for controlling the temp, or you can program multiple times and temps so that everything is automated. It is also an Alexa skill. I have set that up to use with my Alexa, but I've not tried it yet.

I would highly recommend this unit.

    I could not be happier

I was very happy to replace my old touch screen Honeywell thermostat with this Wi-Fi version. I liked the old thermostat, but wanted a unit I could control without having to be physically present and one which would help me save money on utilities.

I have never had a home project go so smoothly before. The whole installation process only took about 20 minutes because the directions were so well written and thorough. Honeywell includes a lot of support, from pictures, to videos online, to a phone number service. There is no need to go into detail about the installation instructions, but I can’t stress enough how important it is to take a photo of the wires connected to your old unit before disconnecting it.

I could not find the instructions to connect the thermostat to Google Home, so here are instructions for an android device. Just make sure you create an account at https://www.mytotalconnectcomfort.com/portal first.

To set up your Honeywell thermostat with the Google Assistant on Android:

    1. Download and open Google Assistant

    2. Click the white drawer within the blue circle icon in the upper right corner of the Google Assistant app (see photo)

    3. Search for “Honeywell” and tap the Honeywell icon and then tap “Link”

    4. Follow the instructions on your screen to complete installation (note: thermostat must be connected to same network as Google Home [2.4GHz network])

    Pros

    Easy to set up

Voice control pairing with Google Home/Alexa

Online and App access anywhere in the world with an internet connection

Cost savings, with more control over heating and cooling

Lower price than other programmable thermostats

No batteries necessary (powered by common wire)

    Cons

Could not find instructions to connect to Google Home/Alexa (maybe I just overlooked them)

Without a doubt I would recommend this thermostat, as I could not be happier. It is easy to set up, cheaper than other units, and will save you money on utilities.

Honeywell wi-fi smart color thermostat RTH9585WF

We have been using an older model of Honeywell programmable thermostat for a few years and really liked it. This new thermostat is a huge upgrade that has color touch display, wifi and can be controlled using voice with an app.

Setup - Setup was easy with all the included instructions. “C” wire accessory is included if you have an older system and does not have the wire to power on the thermostat. The backplate was easy to mount with clear markings of which wire goes where and took me less than 20 mins to replace the old with the new. Once the thermostat is mounted and powered on the on screen step by step setup was easy to follow to configure.

Display - The display has a very nice touchscreen and the color can be adjusted based on your wall or home decor. You can easily select C or F display.

Features - The advanced fan operation feature helps keep the temperature even across multiple rooms throughout the home and it automatically switches from heat to cool based on the temperature settings. It also provides local weather and temperature and manages the home with respect to outside weather.

Intelligent Alerts & Voice Control- You can customize the thermostat to alert you when there is a drop on increase in temperature or humidity and it works as expected. With the app for IOS or Android you can see the temperature on your phone and even control it using voice commands.

This is an excellent product from Honeywell and delivers as expected.

Stop wasting your money with other brands

I know Honeywell brand for so long, I work in the technical field in different pharmaceutical and other job site. I almost spend almost $200 dollar in a Nest Thermostat, I refuse to pay that amount! I know this brand so well that, I rather to give them a try because I know the quality and the engineering behind it. Installation took me around 15min, configuration and set up, around the same, download the app, 5min. Also have a -/+ 3 degrees for your offset in case the reading is. it that accurate, same with Humidity have -/+ 12, very easy and friendly to use, I highly recommend this product.

    Great Thermostat Upgrade!

Disclaimer: I have central air with a TRANE gas heat furnace, already on a battery-powered digital Honeywell thermostat which only has basic thermostat operations.

My installation story - problem and apparent fix:

Upon receiving this new thermostat, I uninstalled my previous "regular" Honeywell thermostat to find my current system connected via 4 wires (green, white, yellow, and Red [Rc]). This new thermostat requires a power wire, or C-wire, to be connected from the gas furnace (in my case). Luckily, the wireset "sheath" that my thermostat uses has 8 total wires inside, so I simply connected this new thermostat to the same connection points as the previous thermostat and then connected the already-present blue (power) wire connection to this unit and the gas heater. Upon connecting, I flipped the breakers back on, set up the thermostat, set the display colors and wifi tech info, and I was set. One problem: The fan didn't turn on even though the unit showed it as "Fan on".

I checked all my connections - they were ok. I called Honeywell tech support. They said everything was wired correctly and that it was likely a TRANE issue. I called a TRANE technician, and he stated it was wired correctly over the phone. I started from scratch and went through setup again - same result. I tried going well above and below the current 65-degree temp to see if the A/C or the heat would trigger the fan to actually run. It did not.

After waking up the next morning, I decided to check the wiring inside the thermostat and everything was tightly connected. Upon placing the thermostat back on the base unit, the thermostat went though its checks, initialized the system, and eventually turned on WITH THE FAN.

After speaking with another Honeywell representative, it appears that the unit just needed to be reseated in order for this "glitch" to clear as no wires were changed, tightened, or moved during this process of removing and reseating the thermostat unit to the base plate. Very strange.

    OBSERVATIONS:

The unit works and looks great and is easy to operate. You can operate via the Honeywell Wi-Fi app, your PC browser, or the unit itself. It can be operated from anywhere by using the app/PC. Setup for temperature scheduling was simple.

The fixture itself has a brightness/color/hue setting which is set for both active and passive modes. Active is when you are currently touching the screen... passive mode takes affect after 5-10 seconds of not touching the screen. The current temperature is displayed in the middle of the screen which is very easy to read from a long distance away. Display also shows indoor humidity along with outdoor temp/humidity.

The unit itself is rather small. Keep in mind that if you replace a bigger unit with this one, you will need to check the paint behind your previous unit, or in my case, an electrical box like the ones used for light switches/plugs but mounted horizontally. There was actually a small hole visible on one side of my unit, so I'll need to fill that in with some spackle and then paint. If your thermostat is in a very visible area, you may want to consider this prior to installation. I have requested Honeywell to develop some sort of frame (or multiple frames) to go around the unit for cases such as this. Then wall repair or painting can be totally avoided.

Overall, the thermostat is working great. Other than the "glitch" of the fan not blowing until I reseated the unit to the base, it has worked fine. The touch-screen is awesome and put together well. Arrangement of options on the display are perfectly placed. And the ability to check or change temperature at anytime, anywhere is a huge plus.

    Great job, Honeywell.

    Easy, practical, but not perfect

I received the Honeywell T9 at no cost for an honest review so here it goes:

Having previously owned 3 other Honeywell models, I was very pleased with the ease of installation of the T-9. Their instructions are some of the easiest to follow that I've seen in a thermostat. No longer do you really need to call your electrician, as this thermostat is really designed with the home user in mind from start to finish.

With that said, I have installed other thermostats before so installing this one, especially having removed another Honeywell, took me just about 10-15 minutes.

The most frustrating part was the app setup. So with this thermostat, Honeywell uses their "Honeywell Home" app, whereas I was previously using "Total Connect Comfort" app (incompatible with the T-9). I had to create a new account and pair it with the thermostat. Though I've set up previous Honeywell thermostats before, this one took me a good 25-30 mins just to get it to pair correctly. Once it did, it kept intermittently disconnecting. I have a Samsung Galaxy S9+ and I was following instructions as given on the thermostat screen.

After 20 mins or so, I decided to call Honeywell's Tech Support, and they suggested that in addition to Airplane mode, I disable cellular data since some Android phones tend to have connectivity issues. Well, this solved the problem so I was happy with that. The final step of the thermostat registering took like 3-4 minutes, so if you think the thermostat is frozen, it's not, it just takes a bit. This is the reason I took off 1 star. If they can update their thermostat instructions or their support manual, you can avoid this headache since this is designed to work with all smart phones.

One really nice feature, was when connecting to your home's wifi, the thermostat provides you with an on-screen keyboard. I found this to be very helpful as I haven't seen it before on a thermostat. The screen is a bit small so I do wish it was bigger, but for what it does, it serves its purpose.

As far as new features on this one, it does come with a separate temperature sensor that you can place anywhere in the house, and run the thermostat based off that room's temperature. It also has adaptive technology that enables the thermostat to intelligently learn how to best warm up or cool the home down using certain ventilation patterns (the way I understood it).

It does work with many different smart home devices including alexa, google assistant, cortana, samsung smartthings, apple homekit and the list keeps growing.

Once all was said and installed, the thermostat is very simple to use, very intuitive, and sleek-looking. I do recommend it, and if you run into any kind of trouble with setup, Honeywell and Resideo will be glad to help you.

    Comfort Is A Touch Away

My previous programmable thermostat was a nightmare to use. The readout was confusing, programming it was agitating, it seemed to only work when it wanted to and it needed batteries to function which was the frosting of annoyance. I was in need of a new thermostat that would afford me the luxury of programming it to what I desired. The Honeywell Home T9 Thermostat has exceeded my expectations while introducing me to features that I didn’t know that I wanted.

Setting up the T9 is relatively easy for as long as you are aware of what your current wire setup is for your existing thermostat. Having an existing C-wire will definitely expedite the setup. The T9 does come with a C-wire adaptor but the installation will require a couple of extra steps but there’s no reason to feel overwhelmed because Honeywell has a fantastic YouTube video that will walk you through the installation.

Once installed, setting up the T9 was as easy as using a smartphone. The touch screen display on the thermostat is CLEAR and RESPONSIVE. The touchscreen didn’t ‘misread’ what I was pressing, and the function readout is sharp. The T9 is accurate with your interactions.

What’s exciting about the T9 is that it comes with a room sensor. This sensor allows you to focus on a specific room when it comes to the temp. For example; you might have the thermostat in a hallway but that hallway temp is a far different temp from your bedroom or entertainment room which means you have to compensate temp degrees. By putting that T9 sensor in the other room, you can now tell the thermostat to keep that room at the desired temperature that you want without having the thermostat taking precedent over the desired temp that you want in the said room. The T9 allows you to add several more sensors to other rooms of your home if you want to. The sensor will also detect if there are additional people in the room or home and adjust the temperature flow to what it senses. It’s pretty impressive.

The T9 offers me the ability to set the temperature for specific times of the day. You might yearn for an average temp while you sleep but you want to wake up to a warmer or cooler temp, you can program the T9 to activate at a different temperature. The options of programming the T9 are plentiful and I’m sure that I haven’t discovered them all at this point. There’s even a password option in case you don’t want anyone else adjusting the temperature that you have set.

And then there’s the luxury of remote options with the T9. We’ve all been in those moments where we are suddenly too hot or cold but don’t want to make the effort to get up and change the thermostat temp. I can either use the Honeywell Home app to change the temperature without getting up or I can order Google Assistant to change the temperature while keeping my laziness intact. The T9 is also compatible with Alexa. I can change the home temperature via the Home app when I am not at home. And yes, you can even turn off the thermostat from the app. I think this will afford a lot of people the peace of mind when the weather suddenly becomes unexpected. I’m anxious to see how much money I will be saving here on out because of the temperature balance feature of the T9.

I honestly believe that the Honeywell Home T9 is a needed investment in comfort and savings.

    SUCCESS No C-Wire Needed

    Honeywell T9

I have been looking at these types of thermostats for a long time. The one thing that has held me back is the need for a C-wire. As my current thermostat connection only uses a green (G), yellow (Y), red (R) and white (W) wire, I was fairly confident there was no C-wire connection. Running a new wire from my furnace control panel to my current thermostat in the second floor hallway was not a task I wanted to take on. This Honeywell T9 thermostat was advertised as no C-wire needed. I am happy to say THIS IS TRUE.

Unboxing: The components come packaged well. You receive the thermostat and back-plate, room sensor with a device to attach it to the wall, and the C-wire conversion kit. There are instructions for installing the thermostat, room sensor and the C-wire conversion. They are written very clearly and easy to follow.

Installing: You must turn off the power to your furnace and air conditioner while wiring the thermostat. As I was not 100% sure if I did in fact have a C-wire and it was not being used, the first thing I did was remove my current thermostat and check the wiring. A ray of hope came upon me as the instructions say to look for an unused wire and I had an unused blue (B) wire. So I wanted to run a test and connected the G, R, Y, W and B wires per the instructions. The thermostat did not turn on to the welcome screen. I checked the wiring and found a blue wire connected to the Y on my furnace. Tracing the wires back I found the installer had changed from a 5 wire to a 4 wire and connected the Y to the B. I then installed the C-wire conversion kit. This was easy and took maybe 10 minutes. It is very nice having the wire insulation cut on the conversion kit so you do not need a wire stripper. Turn it on and still no power to the thermostat. Unfortunately I did not read the instructions clearly enough I guess. I still had the original connections to the thermostat back-plate. After using the C-wire conversion kit, I needed to remove the B wire – change the connection of the G to the C connection – change the Y to the K connection. After completing this simple change, I turn the power back on the welcome screen is displayed. SUCCESS!!! Install the Honeywell Home app on my Android phone and complete the installation. I connected the provided room sensor and placed this in my main floor living room.

Using: You have two options for using the smart thermostat: schedule and geofencing. I was most interested in the geofencing. For this option all you do is set three things: 1) the heat or cool temperature when you are home; 2) the sleep time and heat/cool temperature; and, 3) the away heat and cool temperature. For each of these you also set the room priority and fan setting. This works really well! There is one thing to be aware of that impacts me and likely very few people. The radius for the geofencing is 500m. One of us works less than 500m from the house. So it does not determine we are away when at work. This is the minimum setting. I wish I could set it to 300m. It would then work perfectly!

Using a schedule is similar to what you may be used to. The one difference is you can also set specific days. One thing I did not like about my old thermostat was there was a weekday and weekend schedule. Well Friday and Saturday night are the same for me but Friday is on a weekday schedule and Saturday on a weekend schedule. Similar issue for Sunday night as this is on a weekend schedule and is the same as Monday for me. The scheduling is very flexible and you can set each day, or group days, any way you desire.

Conclusion: I give this Honeywell T9 thermostat 5 stars. It can be installed with on C-wire. You have flexible geofencing or scheduling options. It includes a room sensor for another location. The Honeywell Home app is intuitive and easy to use so you can control it from anywhere using your phone.

Advanced - Smart - Brilliant Design

This is my third Honeywell Wi-Fi capable thermostat, dating back several years. All have performed extremely well and are well designed. The T9 is a brilliant evolution of the Honeywell series.

The drop-down menus are well laid out and understandable, an impressive improvement in the T9 system. Configuring personal preferences, system priorities, scheduling, device sensors, Wi-Fi, and beyond are easily accessible and intuitive. You can even see the future forecast for your area in the menu. Kudos Honeywell.

Installation and setup from basics to Wi-Fi worked flawlessly, simple and smooth. Like that.

The new T9 model changes the shape of Honeywell Smart Thermostats in more ways than one, first the shape has a new face lift. Rather than being a horizontal unit the T9 is vertically shaped, which makes sense when using the touch screen interface and scrolling through menus. Like the aesthetics, looks nice on the wall.

Love the new sensors and the ability to mange your whole home from sensors throughout the home. The sensor system can detect which rooms are being used and throughout the day will adjust the climate control to operate more efficiently. Like the ability to select a priority room for climate management and have the temp and humidity read out on the thermostat screen.

Myriad of ways to control and monitor the system from the phone/tablet app or your PC as well as integrating with either Alexa, Google Home, Cortana, and more. The T9 uses Geofencing, which in a nutshell means it knows when you are coming and going by monitoring your phone and can adjust your system automatically.

    Additional features that stand out:

    - Does not require a C-Wire.

    - Includes Wi-Fi 5 GHz.

    - Indoor humidity sensing.

    - Honeywell usage reports.

The T9 is by far the best designed and engineered thermostat that I have ever used, Honeywell hit a home-run with the T9.

    Straightforward Thermostat with some smarts

The Honeywell T9 is the latest Honeywell smart thermostat to hit the market. It also comes with one remote sensor to get temperature, humidity, and motion information from another room in the house. Additional sensors are sold separately that allow for multiple rooms to be monitored.

First of all, installing a thermostat is not as straightforward as other smart home projects can be. In my case, with a home that was built fairly recently, it was straightforward enough, but older homes or those with more complex wiring may find that it is a bit daunting. I would highly recommend checking your existing thermostat for a “C” wire, if you don’t have one, it is going to involve using the included C wire adapter to get it working. Installation will involve powering off your HVAC system, removing the old thermostat being sure to map which wire went where, potentially stripping wires back a little, pushing the wires into the new mount, attaching the mount to the wall, pushing the thermostat on to the mount, and powering everything back on. And probably painting and patching your wall where the old one was.

The thermostat has an understated design that will fit into most homes. The flange means that it looks like it comes out organically from the wall, instead of sitting like a wall wart that just comes straight out of the wall.

After getting it on the wall and powered up, it will run through a setup wizard and get connected to your WiFi. Surprisingly, it supports 2.4 and 5ghz wireless, which is welcome if you have a lot of interference. For me, I am using 2.4 for most of my utility devices as the better coverage from 2.4 is more important to me. Be sure to install the app and create an account. The app will find and register the thermostat, and you are ready to go! At this point you can pair the included sensor, or wait for another time.

If you have an existing Honeywell thermostat, you are going to feel right at home. All of the options that Honeywells have had for years are right there and the learning curve is almost zero. Using the app or the thermostat, you can set modes and schedules, fan options, and room priority. The touchscreen is responsive enough, but I found the viewing angles to be odd on the display. Looking down at it causes the screen to wash out, and since many thermostats are below eye level, it means leaning down to really get the best view of the display while using it.

As for the “smarts”, this thermostat is what I would consider semi-smart. It can use geofencing if you trust that kind of thing and can be connected to Alexa or Google assistant. There is no integration for Apple HomeKit or Siri as of the time of this review, although it may come later. It has remote sensors that can prioritize rooms or give priority to active rooms, and there are a lot of schedule options. Beyond that…it doesn’t do much. You can’t see how often your HVAC was running or get recommendations to make your home more efficient. I would like it to track when the system was running, so I can see that maybe if I adjusted the temperature a little during the times it is running the most I can make my home more efficient, but it doesn’t seem to have that feature.

One thing that you may like, or hate, is that unlike Nest, this thermostat isn’t acting as a remote information gathering sensor for Google. If you are completely into the Google ecosystem this may not bother you, but if you are more of a skeptic, this may be a big advantage to the Honeywell. Additionally, it comes from a company that has been making sensors and controls for years, so it is likely to be a reliable device that will serve for a long time.

Overall, the Honeywell T9 is a decent smart thermostat that has a very low learning curve. Keep in mind that installing it will be a little more involved than most smart home devices, but when done you will have more control over your home HVAC system from home or afar. If Honeywell added some features to track system usage so you can make more educated decisions on your system schedule and see the impact of changes, it would be an excellent device, and I hope those features are added in the future.

    I'm a fan for sure

This is my first wi-fi / smart thermostat. After some challenges with getting it fully installed and operational, I am very pleased with its functionality and features.

Due to the way my system is setup, I did have to utilize the C-wire adapter and that is where I was originally snagged. A 10 minute call to the customer service number to clear up where one of the wires needed to connect and I was back on track.

Once I had the wiring setup at the furnace, I started the work on the wall and wiring for the thermostat. This was very easy due to the way Honeywell has setup their T adapter. All of the wires were labeled based on the instructions and I was able to put everything in place very quickly.

I ran into a snag based on how the previous box was mounted and I now have a little work to do in order to make it look nice but that is for another day. (See picture)

Once everything was in place, I turned the power back on and everything came up very easily. I configured wi-fi after downloading the Honeywell Home app and registering my userid and other information. Once the device was fully configured for use, I put in my home, away and sleep schedules and I was all done.

It has been running for a couple of days and although we're not ready to be using the A/C, I did test that and have both my heating and cooling configured to be automatic.

    I would get this again.

Check to see if you have a “C” wire behind your current thermostat before purchasing. If not, be prepared to spend another $30 to get a C Wire Power adaptor which requires rewiring the thermostat wiring in your furnace. It’s not rocket science but you need to be comfortable doing this. Once installed, worked well with WiFi access just as advertised!

    Just what we needed!

We wanted the ability to control the thermostat from upstairs without having to trudge down the stairs from the bedroom, etc. This thermostat was exactly what we were needing. We didn't want the full-blown "smart home" type that cost 2-3 times more. This one is basically just like our old one, just with the ability to control it with a smartphone app. The only trick was figuring out how to run the "Common" wire from the furnace/AC to the thermostat. Lucky for me, there was already a multi-wire bundle behind my old thermostat. I just had to figure out which terminal at the furnace/AC fed the needed constant 24V to power the "C" terminal on this thermostat. Easy peasy - but an electrician or HVAC company would happily do the same for you if you're not comfortable with that level of Do-It-Yourself. You'll love the result, regardless!

    Clean and simple, nothing fancy

Got this to replace a 15 year old thermostat because I wanted to control my thermostat remotely through Google Home. The installation was mostly smooth, except I discovered that my old thermostat's C-Wire was not plugged in on the furnace side after the Home app reported that there was no power on the C-Wire. I was able to get it wired correctly on the furnace and then everything worked fine. I'll also note that I had to plug in a few of the wires on this unit a few times before they were all detected, so it was a little finnicky.

This is a simple smart thermostat and doesn't have as many features as the more expensive Nest Thermostat or Ecobee. But, I don't really need any of those features. I just want to change the temperature through Google Assistant. The thermostat was quickly recognised by Google Home and worked flawlessly once I got the wiring issues worked out.

I'm not a huge fan of the wall plate that you have to buy at extra cost. It just looks weird how it curves away from the wall. But, it's fine. The Thermostat had a shiny mirror finish to the screen which can have some glare. Also it turns off when you walk away so you can't see the temperature from far away. But you can always just check the Home app on your phone.

Overall, this is a fine entry level, simple smart thermostat. I used an energy rebate to get $100 off, so check for that as well.

    Highly recommend.

Pretty cool device! I’m glad I got this model and not the most expensive one. This does the job. I can change my temperature from my phone even in the middle of the night without getting out of bed or from the car on the way home from work! It’s easy set up and easy use! I love the graphs it shows of how much energy I used and how much I saved. Very reliable!

I like how I can control the thermostat from my phone very convenient and easy to install if you know what you doing. You definitely will need to purchase the face plate if you had a wider thermostat.

STAY AWAY! Not enough power for 2-wire connection

I bought two of these when they came out on Nov 1, 2020 to upgrade from old honeywell programmable sensors. I have two (2) 24V wire connections: 1 red and 1 white for running my oil furnace.

When I first installed them, I didn't see a problem with them, but soon discovered that they were leeching the battery to run. Fortunately, I could still return them and get money back on my card due to the extra time on the holiday return window. However, it took over a month to see this problem and by that point you wouldn't be able to return them under the 15 day policy.

I ended up splurging and getting the 3rd Generation Nest Learning Thermostat. It's only been running for a couple of days now, but I have them installed upstairs and downstairs and I'm not seeing any battery leech.

If you have 3 wires, you'll probably be fine as you can use one as the C-wire to power your unit. But if you're like me with only 2 wires then my recommendation is to stay away from this model.

Leak detection warning, accurate, easy install

This is one of those devices that you might think "do I really need that?". Well, if we ever have a leak I think we'll be glad we do; not to mention just for the times we leave the hose running by mistake! Since installing it I'd have to say it's interesting to see our water usage and to view what the usage patterns and amounts are.

Before you buy ensure you have access to inlet water supply with a minimum of 6" of clean, straight pipe, power outlet and wifi. Use of the Streamlabs app is required to use this monitor.

Installation for us was very smooth. I would recommend taking a picture of the back of the monitor so you have an easily accessible record of the serial number, etc. because once the unit is installed it is not accessible. The steps for installation are basically as simple as the easy to read and illustrated manual outlines. Download their app, connect, sync, attach the monitor to pipe, and adjust and set alerts. We had no installation issues.

The Streamlabs monitor has been in use for about a week now and we have gotten alerts based on our chosen app settings. Some have occurred when I had the hose running and some in the middle of the night when our water softener is running its cycle. I've not found the alerts to be overkill or obnoxious.

The app will show current water flow (gpm), historical usage for the day, month and year, comparative usage for a day/week/month and recent alerts. Like many wifi connected devices with apps I'm sure Steamlabs will continue to enhance their app over time, but more detail, different format options for data or exclusions for day/time for alerts by users might be helpful.

In summary, the Streamlabs SmartHome Water Monitor is a pretty cool device just considering the fact that it can track water flow via ultrasound technology and is an easy to install device that involves no need for tools or plumbers. We dropped one star off the rating due to app limitations, bit pricey and packaging that is just too much of a good thing. The packaging looks nice, but the box is way bigger than necessary for the size of the monitor. Hopefully this product will help us be more mindful of our water use which would be good for the environment, so why add to waste with so much packaging?

    Water Monitoring Made Easy!

The Streamlabs Wi-Fi Home Water Monitoring and Leak Detection System is a sleek product that runs inline on your main waterline allowing you to monitor water consumption at your house and also detect any potential leaks that might occur.

First off, the packaging is some of the best I've seen in the retail industry, I felt like I was opening a product much more expensive than it is (The exterior box might just be a little overkill though, no mater how nice it is. Soft touch oversized boxes looked and felt fantastic. I appreciate this attention to detail being a Graphic Designer. Once past the packaging you are left with a minimalist 'Apple-like' box with simple black and white instructions.

You DON'T need any tools, you DON'T need any plumbing skills and you DON'T need to panic when installing the system. It clips onto the outside of your pipes using included zip ties. One word of warning in the instructions and on the label on it's underside, do NOT slide the monitor around on the pipe, you'll damage the sensors. Thankfully Streamlabs includes a spare set of sensor pads for when you do exactly this.

I chose to set up my app BEFORE hooking up the monitor to the pipe, in the cool comfort of the house, and not in the heat of the garage. This was a smart move, highly recommended if you live in a hot climate. Once the app is set up, it asks you to calibrate the monitor, which is when I moved to the garage and installed it on the pipe I wanted to monitor in less than 3 minutes, and had a reading from the monitor almost as soon as I connected it to the app and tapped calibrate. The monitor detects the type of pipes you have, and gives you instructions to turn off the water, it will calibrate, and then asks you to go and flush a toilet or turn on a faucet. The monitor has two LED lights on it, one blue one for wifi connection and one green one showing waterflow monitoring. That's it. No other lights or sounds are emitted from the unit.

The app has a nice user interface using the Streamlabs corporate palette of black, with white graphics and blue accents. It's a good looking and easy to use app.

The home screen lets you know how many gallons of water you've used today, whether there is water running or not and the ability to switch between home and away modes, and also an alert status. IF you click on your daily usage, you then see a live 'gallons per minute' reading, the temperature of the room (which is very useful in a garage, if the temperature gets below 40 degrees, the system will alert you), and then an hourly monitor with little blue dots whenever you've had water running. Below that are comparative graphs for today, yesterday, last week, and last month.

You can also connect your Streamlabs monitor to Alexa, to then enable the home and away features of the system. In 'home' mode, the system monitors water usage as you would expect. In away mode, it will alert you if a toilet is flushed for example, when it wouldn't flush ordinarily, if you were away. Those notifications will be incredibly useful, especially if you are away, and you don't expect a toilet to be flushing.

I have the slow leak notifications set at 0.5 gpm for longer than 20 minutes and my major leak alerts set to 4.0 gpm for longer than 5 minutes. You can adjust these settings as you so choose.

All in all, a great little 'piece of mind' monitor that allows you to track your water usage, so you can compare it to your latest water bill, but more importantly, you can be notified of potential leaks in your water system that could save you thousands of dollars in repair bills, when you are able to catch that leak before it gets too costly.

Piece of mind in a small package, does exactly what it says it will.

Excellent investment for peace-of-mind it provides

    PROs:

    - Relatively simple setup; app provides a step-by-step wizard for setting up the unit on your home network (including trouble-shooting and diagnostic) and pictures for each physical installation step

    - More than leak detection/warning; the app will provide easy-to-read and interpret real-time monitoring of water usage and the ability to compare usage at daily, weekly and monthly intervals

    - Not just a water monitor--you can set alerts for ambient temperature warnings if your room temp drops below 40 degrees

    - Smarthome installation was quick and painless and actually kind of cool--once I connected my Streamlabs account through the Alexa app, I can tell Alexa to change the monitor's operation from home (alert after certain time/flow-rate limits) to away modes (any water running at all for more than 15 seconds) without having to do anything in the separate Streamlabs app

    - Default alert settings start with slow leak (1/2 gal per min for longer than 20 minutes) and major leak (4 gal per min for longer than 5 mins) detection, but the app includes a "smart alerts" feature that monitors typical usage over the course of a week and sets up a customized (but also manually defeatable) alert schedule accordingly

    - Though I don't have need to monitor more than just a single water main in a house, the app can monitor several Streamlabs units at once and has options to customize settings for home, office, apartment, condo, and even "something else" (outhouse, barn, etc.) with zip code-based comparisons against typical water usage in the area to establish a baseline

    - The unit will auto-sense the type of pipe it's attached to (who knew there were several options?)...between that and the auto-calibration of the house's water pressure, there's nothing you really need to know ahead of time to complete installation

    CONs:

    - You can't really separate the unit from the network/app--there are no audible alarms or LED warning indicators (LEDs about water flow--there are two LEDs indicating wifi connection and flow monitoring errors in the unit itself) so if you don't have your smartphone handy or your power/network is offline, you're kind of dead in the water

    - Setup requires a separate Streamlabs account creation (in addition to Alexa or Nest if you want Smart-home integration)--not a big deal, but that's another login and password to keep track of!

    - As others have indicated, you need to check your installation area BEFORE you purchase and install as this device is not entirely self-contained or low-profile--you need at least 5-6 inches of straight/exposed pipe after the main shutoff valve but before any branches, about 3-4 inches of clearance on the sides/top of the installation location to accommodate the bulbous device itself, access to a nearby power outlet, and decent wifi reception...lacking any one or more of these where you intend to install it, and you should look elsewhere

    - You must ensure a SOLID pipe connection to successfully get the ultrasound flow-rate signals running--though not difficult, I had to run through portions of the setup procedure about 3-4 times before I finally got the unit on the network and secured tightly enough to the pipe itself to get a good signal

    Summary review:

It's maybe just a bit pricey given what it does; but for peace-of-mind, it's definitely a nice-to-have unit, especially if your home suffers from pipe-endangering cold snaps or lots of potential sources of sneaky water leaks. Installation was relatively painless for me though I had to re-cinch and tighten down the zip-ties about 3 times before I finally got the "good flow detection" LED blinking properly. The thin plastic zip ties included in the kit MAY stretch over time so it's likely at some point I'll get an error notification in the Streamlabs app that my sensor isn't reading properly and I'll have to re-tighten the ties again. It wasn't a big deal, but it was the only real snafu I experienced during installation, so if you're having trouble getting the green "water flow" LED to light up properly, you may need to tighten the unit against the pipe even further before proceeding with installation.

Heed the installation suggestions regarding pipe space, side/top clearance, power, and wifi reception before you purchase and install this device or you will definitely be disappointed and frustrated. That said, don't be fooled by the absurdly large packaging into thinking you're going to need 2 feet of mounting space, either. The actual product is much smaller than the Russian nesting-doll style packaging and hat-box sized container it ships in would lead you to believe...that's the main sending unit down there next to my key fob in the attached photo.

So far, I haven't had a real water leak to be concerned with (thankfully) so I've spent the last few weeks adjusting alert thresholds, turning on away monitoring, running a constant low stream from a faucet, turning off all water sources, etc. and seeing if the app would provide me the information/problem notification I would expect (or not bug me when it didn't need to)--I can say with a great degree of satisfaction that it has worked as advertised and as I would have expected. For example, during a shower, the app's main page will rightly tell me the water is running and give me a quick overview of how much water I've used during the day so far, and whether any new alerts are present. I tap that main display and then I get an easy to read/interpret speedometer style indicator of gallons per minute flowing at that time, bar graphs of water usage and usage peaks throughout the day, a real-time room temperature reading, comparative usage readings for the day/yesterday, this week/this time last week, this month, and this time last month, and a readout of any recent alerts. That's a lot of information...more so than I really need for my own purposes; but if you're trying to monitor/conserve water, it's a very useful tool to give you a sense of just where/when you might focus on controlling your usage.

Now turn on 'away monitoring' and then, say, flush a toilet, and I get an alert on my phone as I would hope/expect. When I open up the app to see what is amiss, the whole read-out is red (VERY attention-getting), and I can then drill down to get a sense of what's going on--how many gallons have been used since the alert began, how long it lasted, etc...and, when the water stops flowing because the tank filled back up, the display returns to normal and the alert ends. All told, the Streamlabs unit is the water monitor and early warning system it purports to be--through the app, it provides an informative, useful, and easy-to-interpret readout of what's happening/what's happened with your home's water system and gives you warning when there's a potential leak or when usage deviates from what's normal (i.e. you left the water running to fill the pool). Although I get why a battery backup probably isn't part of the sensor unit (if the power supplying this unit is out, it's likely the power to your wifi router would be affected as well), it would have been a re-assuring inclusion given that the modern home is starting to accommodate UPS/power backup capabilities on various key devices like modems and wifi routers. That very VERY minor observation aside, the Streamlabs system is a pretty solid investment for both water-conscious and leak-concerned consumers out there...recommended!

Serves its purpose with a minor "tolerable" glitch

I have had mine online/inline for almost a year. No major issues to speak of, but a minor issue I would like to point out.

After about 6 months the unit started detecting usage every hour of .3 to 1.4 gallons. First thought, A leak! Nope, no leak. No flow through the city's water meter, no drips anywhere. Just an anomoly, I guess. I am thinking maybe RFI? In the photo note the unexplained burst of usage. It happens mulitple times per hour every hour, every day, and NO water flow is present.

This a 4 unit apartment building and everybody was gone for the summer when I did my testing and experiments.

Main thing is it alerts me to excessive usage and or running toilets and for that I am happy.

Last year I had a tenant (student) flush the toilet and unknown to him the chain got stuck under the flapper and he went home for the weekend and the toilet ran for 3 days. Cost me $95.00 in EXTRA water.

This product is a sucessful countermeasure to that scenario. Anomoly or not, I like this unit.

Setup was easy enough. Has never lost wifi connection during its tenure. Recovers from power failures better than other hardware I have.

Deserving of 4.5 Stars all day long.

Useful and cool all at once!

Thanks Streamlabs - now my family hates me. Yes - I'm addicted to seeing how much water my family uses on a daily basis. I can easily monitor how much water is used when one of the kids takes a shower. I can see how much water the washer uses. I can see what happens to my usage when I water the lawn. Oh boy.

Really though - what a great product. Meant to help monitor for water leaks and measure usage as well - this super-easy-to-install product simply "clamps" onto your main water pipe and away you go!

I've got a complicated house with lots of water-using things - like ice makers, water softeners, sprinkler systems, Reverse Osmosis system, etc - the later is the one that set off the Slow Leak Detection events - as the RO system uses a small water stream to create that super-clean water.

Wifi integration is easy and clean. I had to run it once or twice to get it to stick - but was simple enough.

If you're looking for leak detection or just want to freak out your family - this device is for you!

Helpful IoT Gadget for Water Usage/Leak Detection

The Streamlabs Home Water Monitor is a relatively inexpensive insurance policy against flooding due to major pipe leaks as well as a long term money saver by detecting small water-wasting leaks.

By connecting to its smartphone app via wi-fi, Streamlabs will notify you on your phone if it detects water running for a certain amount of time, as determined by you and initially set to 20 minutes. You can also monitor real-time water usage and compare to the same time of the previous day, week, and month. It also shows charts of water usage on a daily, monthly, and yearly basis. All very cool stuff to help train yourself to reduce water usage.

Setup is done without the need for a professional, and is pretty easy, but there are a few things to note before buying this product. The first thing to note is that you will need to plug this into a wall electrical outlet. Mine is using a really long extension cord right now because I don’t have an outlet nearby. The second thing is that you’ll need to have good wi-fi reception where this is installed. If it’s in a basement or crawl space, make sure you get good wi-fi there before proceeding. The last thing to look for is to make sure you have enough straight water pipe space to fit the unit. You need at least five inches of straight pipe before getting to any branches to place the unit. You also need enough space around the pipe to accommodate the unit. As long as you meet all those requirements, you’re good to go. It’s just a matter of placing the unit on the pipe, securing with zip ties and following the instructions on the app.

I’ve been using this for over a week now and it’s been a real eye opener as to just how much water we use on a daily basis and what actions use the most water.

If you’re into IoT devices, are interested in saving water, or want to protect yourself from major damage from leaks, the Streamlabs Home Water Monitor is a very useful product.

    Spot on

I purchased this unit in response to a leak experienced in our lawn sprinkler. After finding a suitable installation location (the 2nd time around) as we have water softener units that I did not originally consider. I find the unit works very well, detecting any water flowing from the tanks into the house. Setup, while sensitive, was easy.

I think the unit is a good value when you consider the price you pay for water. If I can get my spouse to appreciate the information available in the easy to understand graphic display then this unit will pay for itself in 6 months to 1 year.

My only issue now, is a separate one in that my lawn sprinkler is not attached to the house plumbing (that's an entirely other concern I've been made aware of now).

    ---- Review ----

    Installation:

Included in the box are the thermostat, power wire (for installation without a C-wire), mounting screws, wall anchors, wire labels, wall plate, and mini screwdriver. This was my first time installing a thermostat, and I was pleasantly surprised by how easy the process was. After turning off the circuit breaker to my heating/cooling system, I removed the faceplate from my existing thermostat, labeled the wires with the cleverly included wire labels, and removed it from the wall. After that, I attached the LUX thermostat’s base to the wall and the wires to their matching terminals then snapped the thermostat to its base and proceeded with the setup process. My system has a C-wire, so I can’t speak to the installation process using the power wire, which looks a little more complex. Nonetheless, you don’t have to have a C-wire to install this LUX thermostat. The part that took me the longest was drilling holes and covering up the previous ones because I preferred not to use the included wall plate that’s quite large. Depending on the size difference between your existing thermostat and the LUX thermostat, and whether you prefer to use the wall plate or not, the time it takes to install will vary, but I like that there are just a few steps clearly defined in the installation manual. I didn’t experience any hiccups during installation.

    Design:

I’m disappointed with the design and quality of this LUX smart thermostat. Put simply, it looks and feels cheap, which is not what I’d expect from a smart thermostat. The pictures look nice online, but it gives off a different vibe in person. Even something as simple as the buttons are offputting to me due to a loud click noise upon pressing them. Though it’s on the low end of the smart thermostat price range, there are similarly priced ones with better build quality and a modern look. This thermostat looks outdated and seems to be mostly made of lightweight plastic. Though a thermostat doesn’t need to durable or be a beautiful art piece on your wall, it just seems that there wasn’t much thought put into the design of this LUX thermostat, and that’s a shame because the features of it contend with alternatives on the market.

    Features & Mobile App:

Where this LUX thermostat stacks up with the competition is features. I like the “geofencing” feature that switches the system to energy-saving mode when you’re not home and the ability to set temperature schedules in the mobile app. Both of these features help save energy and money. Additionally, I appreciate the ability to change the temperature from anywhere via the app, as well as the Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant support. These add convenience to changing the temperature. In my case, I use Google Assistant and it works great. Alerts are a feature I haven’t tested (and hopefully will never have to), but having alerts gives me peace of mind because they can warn you of dangerous freezing or heat conditions. Filter change reminders are a nice feature to have as well. When it comes to features, there’s really not much more I could ask for in a smart thermostat. However, like the thermostat’s design, the app could use some work. It was pretty easy to set up, and I haven’t experienced any glitches, but it’s very basic and not an elegant user interface. That aside, I think this LUX thermostat provides plenty of helpful features that add convenience to my life and help me save energy.

    Verdict:

I really wanted to like this thermostat more than I do. It has all the features I look for in a smart thermostat, like scheduling, controlling from anywhere, Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa support, and home/away awareness. Additionally, I was relieved to find that the installation process was simple. What makes this thermostat difficult to recommend is the lackluster design. If it’s appealing to you, I’d say this is a good smart thermostat that’s worth your consideration. I understand that design preferences vary from person to person. I just think some of the other similarly priced smart thermostats on the market have the same features but much more premium, modern looks. With that in mind, I can only give this thermostat a three-star, “average” rating.

Needs work - there are better options out there

I own another brand of "smart" thermostat so I am comparing my experience with the LUX to that other product which is 3 years old.

I still had a "dumb" thermostat upstairs so I was anxious to get it replaced with something I could control by app or voice.

My experience with the LUX did not start well as the Quick Start instructions had the wrong phone number printed on it. I know this because I called the phone number, got the message saying "The number you called is no longer in service," researched the support number through a Google search and called the correct number which is one digit different from the one published on the accompanying Quick Start sheet..

I was immediately greeted with a recording that said that, "We are aware of issues with our app and therefore you may experience a long wait time." - another red flag.

I did not have to wait too long to speak to a technician. The technician explained that the company had recently been purchased by Johnson Controls and it was the JCI Marketing team that had sent out the wrong number. Mergers are always tough and they do not always produce the best customer service, especially in the short term, but the JCI acquisition for me was another red flag based on my personal experience with them as a conglomerate.

From there, the tech answered my question and I was able to wire the thermostat. Connecting to WiFi took several attempts. I imagine most of the problems they are experiencing related to the app have to do with this connectivity.

Finally, I got it to work. The app is not very elegant - basic dashboard info, slider for selecting the desired temp, and then Statistics, Settings and Schedule tools across the bottom.

As for Adding additional users was as easy as sending them an email.

Unfortunately, I was never able to connect it to Alexa - it would not be discovered after several attempts. There may be a more "manual" way to do it, so I will have to wait until a day that I have several hours free to be able to call their Tech Support and work through their app connectivity problem.

Bottom line - it is better than using a "dumb" thermostat, but there are far better alternatives out there.

    cheap and it shows

The Lux thermostat is a great idea on paper. A low-end, low-price thermostat that costs a fraction of the high end thermostats, but does the same job? Sounds awesome!

Unfortunately the performance of the Lux thermostat was on the low-end. Out of the box it's a pretty straight-forward thermostat installation. There are lots of helpful videos online should you run into any issues. I had no problem getting it on the wall and getting power to it. It did take me several tries to get it to connect to my wi-fi system. The app kept telling me the firmware was updating, while the thermostat kept saying it wasn't connected. I've had the app tell me several times since then that my wi-fi wasn't on or that it couldn't find the thermostat. My wi-fi is very close to the thermostat. I have checked several times after receiving that message, and the other devices in my home were getting a fine signal. The Lux has had difficulty staying connected for some reason.

After that it has been hit or miss with how well it works. The app is very 'clunky' and figuring out how to set the schedule took a while. Once I did get it set it seems to stick to it fairly well....most of the time. There have been a couple of times it just didn't follow it, or the display on the thermostat would show a temperature that didn't match the app.

Most frustrating is it doesn't always shut off when it hits the set temperature. There have been a handful of times that I've had to manually shut it off because it was still running, even though the house was a couple of degrees warmer than the setting--see the picture. It's not obvious, but it was running when I took this.

The picture also shows the other big issue with this thermostat--frankly, it looks cheap. I'm assuming the big trade off in getting a wi-fi, voice controlled thermostat at this price is losing a lot of the information that most smart thermostats can show you--outside temperature, humidity levels in the home, etc. It's very 'low frills,

The voice control also has a huge issue--I use Alexa and the app in Alexa seems to be new, and it's not great. The few times I've tried to change the temperature for even a short time it puts the entire schedule on hold and won't return to it until you manually go into the app and take it off hold. That's incredibly inconvenient (not to mention annoying the first time you discover it). The app can't tell you what your current temperature is in the home, or what the thermostat is set to. Not returning to the schedule (rather than simply be a temporary override) makes it way more trouble than it's worth for something that's supposed to be convenient.

Overall I wouldn't recommend this unless you are in a situation where you must have a programmable or app-controlled thermostat and don't want to spend a fortune on it (maybe caring for someone who has difficulty getting around)--it is affordable. I've seen this thermostat on sale at prices that compare to non-smart thermostats, so it's definitely a great value---so long as you are prepared to give up a lot for that price.

    Good Value Wifi Thermostat

I like that this thermostat offers WIFI control in a package that is traditional and familiar, but also clean and modern. My biggest issue is that some of the settings and features are not covered well in the included documentation.

    Pros

    - WIFI connection and control via app work well

    - Basic functions and controls are intuitive and work well

    - Large backlit display

    - Setting up and managing a basic schedule from the app was no issue

    - Usage data available via app is useful for comparing run time and temperature settings

    - Offers app based geofencing for location aware home and away modes

    - Connected to Alexa with no issue - voice control works for changing temperature, but is limited (tip: you have to enable the Lux Products skill to allow Alexa to find your thermostat)

    - Installation was straight forward and a small screw driver to tighten the terminal wires is included (make sure you turn off the power and label the wires or take a picture before removing your old thermostat)

    Things to Consider

    - No battery option - you must have a C-wire or purchase a separate power kit

    - Two features I found really useful in my old thermostat are missing: no humidity sensor and no service reminders based on run time (the only reminder available is for the air filter based on days)

    - No touch screen and only 3 physical buttons means a lot of clicking to change some settings locally

    - Some features are not well documented, requiring a visit to the FAQ or a bit of internet searching (see below)

    - Auto heat/cool mode only works properly when running a schedule, it blocks temperature changes from the app with no warning that this command is not available (you must switch modes first via the app then change the temp), temperature changes at the thermostat cause strange behavior in Auto (the heat and A/C constanly toggle) until you return to the schedule - again no warning, it has no awarness of outside temperature and it is recommended not to use it if it is colder than 50F outside to prevent A/C damage.

    - Many settings (reminders, calibration, heat/cool temperature limits, run time delay, temperature swing, display) cannot be changed via the app and are a bit cryptic due to the limited display/instructions.

The basic functions of this thermostat work well and are easy to use. I did have a few minor issues, but it offers a lot of value and is a good choice if you like the design.

Easy to read, works with digital assistant

Installation is simple if you read and follow the instructions carefully. Be sure to take the before picture of your wiring and you’re good to go. As soon as you flip the power back on, the unit scans your setup and walks you through steps to bring it online. It takes several minutes to upgrade the firmware once connected to your Network.

The app is okay, prettier than it is functional. They could have made scheduling a lot easier, and changing the temp would be easier with simple up down arrows than the pseudo dial in the app.

The thermostat itself is simple enough—large buttons, even larger print. No need to grab your readers to see when adjusting manually. You can read it across the room. One thing I dislike is the big side graphic and logo. Very gaudy and unnecessary.

There is no mention of how to pair it with your digital assistant. I assume most folks will know how to do that with there assistant of choice, just as they pair it to other devices. Once installed and paired, it’s simple to adjust the settings from anywhere through the app or by command.

A good unit; works well. Good support people.

A good unit; works well. Their support people are also good. My issue is with their instruction book. It has errors; it addresses every type of installation (oil hot air, gas hot air, various HVAC configurations, etc.) with fast forwards to other parts of the book and is difficult to follow.

A separate complete discussion of each type of installation would greatly simplify installation. Also,, there is little help with the WiFi part once the install is completed. They refer you to the app which is not self explanatory.

    A Good Thermostat

This is a pretty good thermostat. It was easy to install. Setup was simple using a smartphone. It is accurate. It has a modern art deco look to it. You can control it fairly easily directly via the three physical buttons, or you can use the app. It can also be linked to Google or Alexa. Overall I like this thermostat.

    Likes:

    1.) Easy to install

    2.) Simple to setup

    3.) Has a unique look

    4.) Alexa and Google support

    Dislikes:

    1.) Not touch screen

2.) No date, time, or weather on the display

    Defective

Bought refurbished considering it’s Google product from Best Buy. It was defective, could not recognize correct wiring and fan stayed on only to pop an error code. Returning and switching back to old Hineywell thermostat for now. Looks like they recycled a defective product from a previous return without much certification. Disappointed. Will look into some other brand for a smart thermostat.

    Disappointed

I bought 2 of these refurbished nests - one worked and the other did not.

The one that did not work could not find WIFI nor would it charge even after being plugged directly into an electrical socket for several hours. 2 issues that I thought would have been found during refurbishment.

I returned the faulty nest but customer service credited the wrong credit card (one that had expired) and not the one that was charged for the product. After several phone calls, I still have not been reimbursed.

    Does not work.

Don’t waste your money. This product does not work as intended. I hooked it up as instructed and still had issues with the battery on a new Google nest thermostat. I called Google and they were unable to assist — they haven’t been trained on this product. Additionally, if you own a 3rd generation learning thermostat, there’s no functionality to check to see if the power connector is actually installed.

So, today I just used the extra blue wire that was not connected to my furnace board and wired it as a c wire. There’s plenty of YouTube videos showing how this is done.
