Fantastic upgrade for 2015/2017 Shield TV Owners.

Coming from using the Shield TV Remote from 2015, I was getting a little tired of having to constantly find it after the wife looses it in the couch every other day. That and the fact that it does not have an IR blaster to power on/off/control the sound system made it time to upgrade just for my family's own sanity.

In comes the new Shield TV Remote from 2019. This one has a few super nice benefits even though I liked the old ones small sleek design and function.

Firstly, this one lights up which is helpful when using it or looking for it at night.

Second, this thing uses 2 AAA batteries so no longer are you needing to charge it every week or so.

Thirdly, the shape and size of the device is very nice to hold and use, and keeps itself from falling into the abyss of the couch because it is wide enough to sort of wedge and stay on top. And if it does happen to get lost, you can locate it from the Shield TV itself (Though since mine is a older 2015 Pro, I need to use another remote to get to that option, which I have plenty of others via gamepads and such so this is not a con in any way).

Lastly, the device has an IR Blaster so it only takes one remote to power up the Shield, TV, and Logitech surround sound and get to viewing.

Overall it's a fantastic little upgrade to an already fantastic Android TV device.

    Obvious choice is obvious

Don't over-research questionable alternatives. This updated Nvidia Shield remote is OEM and works with the 2017 Pro Model.

It also is able to control the volume of your TV and or soundbar in addition to the power through CEC.

In other words, one remote is all you need now to control everything.

Should've been the original 2015 remote

Got this for my 2015 Shield. I also have 2019 Shield & 2019 Pro Shield so I already knew what I was getting. Definitely worth the $30 if you are still using the old rechargeable style. Everything about this new remote is better. This is the remote that should've been standard from the beginning.

    Great little TV remote

I travel for work 100%, always changing hotels. I don't even use the hotels remote once I reprogram this thing for the current room I'm in. Usually takes less than a minute to program to a new TV. Not sure how I ever got along without it. I've been using this remote attached to my Fire TV remote for almost a year and a half. I think I've changed the batteries once.

Attaches very nicely to Fire TV remote. Easy to program, has necessary button functions. Only con so far is the Fire TV remote slides up and down very easily and does come out completely if not careful. Other thing to think about is that it only has channel up/down buttons, so it takes a little while to go through your channels without your actual remote, so if you’re gonna watch regular tv, you may still find yourself bringing out your native tv remote.

    Less clutter more convenience!

When I first spotted this product on kickstarter I knew I needed it and now having it I know I was right. We are a family of five who ditched the cable bill and opted for internet streaming instead, but it was becoming a pain to try and locate the tiny Amazon remote and then also having to locate the tv remote and the remote for the receiver. No matter how hard we tried to keep things together the pile of remotes would magically scatter amongst the many couch cushions. Now we just have the one remote that does it all and is wide enough to not get lost but still small enough to be convenient. It comes with standard remote buttons for power, volume, channel, source, and then two buttons that you can program as you desire. Setup is very easy! Just need to hold down buttons till the light flashes and then pair the old remote. I am completely satisfied with my purchase and highly recommend it for anybody using Amazon or Roku.

Does The Job After Learning Curve

This review is for someone like me who has never used a fancy-pants programmable remote like this Harmony 665. Until now, the only "universal" remote I've used is whatever my TV provider gave to control their set-top box along with basic TV functions like on/off and volume. I had no idea what I was missing. The Harmony 665 is a very capable device, but there is a learning curve if you’ve never used one of these. Frankly, most of this learning curve comes from trying to navigate Logitech's MyHarmony support site and their desktop software (needed to program the remote). It would have been nice if their support site had a search function like on their user forum. The summary is here followed by a more detailed review:

    • Ability to program multiple steps into a single button

    • Large database of controllable devices

    • Remote glows in the dark, with the exception of a few critical buttons

    • Easy-to-open packaging

    • Though not difficult, cumbersome to set up, especially for a first-time user

    • The “Exit” key functionality is not intuitive

    • Allowed me to map Sony Playstation 3 controls, even though PS3 is not supported and doesn’t work

    • Logitech’s MyHarmony support site needs improvement.

Though the Harmony 665 can handle a lot, my setup is pretty basic: Comcast Xfinity box, Samsung Smart TV, Vizio soundbar, and Sony Playstation 3.

    First Impression

The packaging is easy to open – no need for a chainsaw to rip it apart. This package has perforations on the back, making the remote simple to pull out (see photo). The device is lightweight, albeit a little slippery.

    Getting Ready

I dutifully read the sparse instructions in the package. I could hardly believe the warning to set aside 45 minutes for setup, but it turned out to be a good estimate. I had to download software from their site to my Mac. Logitech’s software site also referenced an iOS app. I wasted time looking at the iOS app only to discover it does not apply to this remote. Once installed, the desktop software required me to create an account so that settings can be saved and reloaded if needed. I used my password manager to generate a strong long password, but the software would not let me copy/paste the password. I ended up annoyingly retyping it. Oddly but thankfully, it has no issue with copying/pasting passwords for subsequent logins.

    Adding Devices

At this point, I gathered the model numbers for my devices. It took me a while to find the manuals since I could not easily move my equipment to see what was on the back. The Harmony software accepted the model numbers for my Sony PS3, Comcast box, Vizio soundbar and even the Samsung TV which had a Costco specific model number. Once entered, the Harmony software recognized the Vizio as an "amp" instead of a soundbar – clearly written by an engineer instead of a product manager. Note: the software allowed me to add the Sony PS3 though I later discovered the Harmony 665 cannot actually control it. Also note, the Logitech web page to check supported devices is buried and difficult to find within the MyHarmony site. I cannot reference it here as Best Buy does not allow URLs in reviews.

Harmony can be used to control each device individually (as if using multiple remotes). But Logitech encourages you to program activities like "watch TV," or "listen to music." Each activity then issues all necessary commands for that activity. There are several shortcut buttons that can be mapped to these activities. For example, I programmed the "listen to music" activity button to turn on my soundbar and switch it to bluetooth so I can play music from my iPhone. Similarly, the “watch movie" button turns on the TV and brings up the Samsung Smart Hub so I can select a TV app like Netflix or YouTube. It works well and is what separates Harmony from simple universal remotes. Exactly how much you can program varies depending on Harmony's features and the device controllability. For example, even though using “watch movie" brings up the Samsung Smart Hub, my Samsung TV will not let it select a specific app like Netflix – that I do manually. Another useful feature is Harmony’s keys are automatically reprogrammed to work with the chosen activity. That means when in “watch movie” activity, the play/pause/rewind keys act like my TV remote and let me control what I’m watching on Netflix, YouTube etc… But in “watch TV” activity, those same keys control my Comcast DVR. Before Harmony, I was constantly switching remotes.

    Actual Usage

I love using the activity keys. It’s a much better experience than constantly switching Harmony to function like a specific device remote. But, there’s a hurdle in the “exit” key functionality. If I’m "watching TV" and then switch my activity to “watch movie” on Netflix, I can exit the Netflix app via the “exit” key on Harmony as expected. Even though I’ve exited the Netflix app, the remote stays mapped in “watch movie” activity, and the keys are still programmed for the Samsung TV remote. That means the guide button will not bring up the Comcast guide, nor will it now control the Comcast DVR. Intuitively, I expected that by exiting Netflix, Harmony would reconfigure itself as the Comcast remote. Instead, I have to press the “watch TV” activity button or manually set it to act like the Comcast remote. This issue comes up quite a bit on the Logitech community forum, and while some folks discovered a way to program a better exit, it did not work for me. If all else fails, you don’t have to use activities; Harmony can easily be configured to work like each device’s native remote via the handy 4-button center display. Finally, I was very pleased that the remote glows orange in the dark, though inexplicably not for the power or activity shortcut keys. That’s a very strange design decision given how much Logitech wants us to use activities.

Overall, the remote is 4 stars and the Logitech software/website are 3 to 3.5 stars. The product is very nice but the experience needs some tweaking. Regardless, now that I have it set up, it’s a keeper.

    Great product, wears out fast!

Logitech makes great products, but their remotes don't last last more than a year. Poor build quality, wears out fast. I keep buying because the product is great, remember to get the extended warranty, I've used it 3 times already, pays for itself!!! This time the buttons are wearing out, had this only 7 most. Good Mult-Functional Controller

I had the opportunity to review the Harmony 665 Controller and overall I was impressed with the customization and the extra care they took in button quality. The controller could appear overwhelming for those who are use to simple controllers however I can assure anyone who is on the fence that the learning curve is very small. The package includes 2 AA batteries, a short USB Cable, instruction booklet and easy to open from the back packaging (which made it very easy to take out the controller instead of fighting the plastic).

Well made controller with good feel buttons and click when pressing

Buttons glow in dark for easy to see/read

Packaging and batteries easy to remove/add if needed

LCD is easy to read and customize the menu to your liking

Programming Commands/Functions very easy to customize.

Harmony 665 can "learn" from other controllers

Software very easy to use with helpful walk-through

Software does not come packaged, have to download

Button glow paint can wear over time

Change Input does not work on some older TV Models be sure to check internet of your TV model with this controller

    Controller Itself -

The button arrangement is well thought out and the click you feel when you press in a button helps you now it was fully pressed. The buttons have a rubber feel however I am concern if the picture will rub off over time. The buttons pictures glow in the dark so it is easy to see what you are pressing, however I would have preferred to lighting buttons as the glow paint can wear over time. The controller feels good to hold as the placement of the batteries gives you a good grip and evenly distributes the weight. The controller is divided into 3 sections with the most used programmable buttons/LCD window top, basic navigation/volume controls in middle and video/interactive playback on the bottom. The LCD screen is easy to read and turns on/off based on motion of the controller which is nice to not waste battery. It takes 2 AA batteries that go underneath and there is a nice addition of a strap to help when needing to remove the batteries. The controller also has an IVR on the bottom to "learn" from other controllers if the software does not recognize the device you are registering to the controller.

The controller comes with instructions to go online and download their software to program the controller. This may be an issue for those who are on data caps or limited to internet access. This software is needed to have a functioning controller and will not work with the tv without a first time setup. The software is about 35MB in size, easy to install on my Win10 machine and does require registration. The software is easy to use and allows for deep customization for more advance users. You can setup up to 10 devices to control or interact with each other. The software is also a one stop shop if you have multiple Logi Controllers as it will store all information under your registered account. You can even go as far as set up the millisecond delays for each command for older TV's that takes time to warm up. However the software at times does have issues discovering that the Harmony 655 controller is plugged in and it requires to unplug/replug for the software to see it. I have also discovered the "input" command to change which input to go to when programming does not work on some older TV's. Unfortunately this is a risk as there is no way to tell until after performing all the setup/configuration then testing it on your TV.

    Programming Devices:

The programming is really easy to use/setup. With just one click of a button it can turn on all your devices (TV , Stereo Receiver, PS3) and set your inputs to have it all set to just insert a movie. Once you use one of the program buttons the LCD screen turns into an option window you can navigate for any additional commands you may need. You can even customize the command list to display the most commonly used ones first.

Overall I would recommend this product for anyone who wishes to cut down on the amount of controllers they use and want an easily programmable controller.

    Logitech Universal Remote

This is a replacement for an older model which lasted more than 15-years and it probably would have lasted longer if it were not for butterfingers. This model provides several additional functions that allow us to replace other remotes such as our Roku service. I am disappointed that this model seems to loose its functionality on a regular basis, causing us to remove and reinstall the batteries several times a day.

    Ok but has flaws

Universal remote has been solid so far but does take some time to get use to but once you understand it is fairly easy to use. A negative I have is if I have a new tv then I would have to connect it to a computer or laptop to change it. I wish there was a option to do it on the remote itself. Another negative is the durability is not good at all. I have not had the remote for five months and the numbers and other buttons the symbols are rubbing off. I would avoid this remote if possible. If other Harmony remotes are more durable I would choose those. But it is a solid option if you need one immediately and for short term then this a great performer.

I purchased it to use a Visio Smart TV due to Purchasing one with out a remote, It was able to turn on the tv and Change inputs, but did not have the ability to use any smart functions or even change major tv settings, but I will say it is great for other devices, and as a quick replacement. but Not meant for Smart TVs post 2014

    Easy Remote!

This remote was insanely easy to program, gives me all the basic features that I need (volume, channel changing, menu, DVD, info options...) and so far works great.

    The downside:

It does state that it comes with batteries and it does NOT. I’m grateful to have read a previous review that stated this so when I ordered it I was able to order batteries too. The backlighting on the key pads is also kind of janky. It only highlights the circle in the center of the remote and the power button. But for an easy, programmable remote control, that is really affordable - a girl can’t complain too much!

    Would recommend & purchase again.

    False Advertisement

So I ordered this remote online to pick up in store. Online it said it needs 2 AAA batteries, and it said they are included. I didn't buy batteries because it said there are batteries included. I opened up remote and there are NO batteries included! That is false advertisement! Please fix this! I now have a remote with no batteries and I now need to go another day without.

    Not for 2 TVs though.

I bought it because it’s supposed to control up to 3 devices. My purpose was to register 2 televisions and my roku. It can only register one television at a time plus my roku. However, I believe a third device can be a dvd•vcr. Setup was easy though; you don’t have to input codes you can easily hold down the device button on the control, while

Pointing it to a powered on device, until the power buttons blinks and stops. Then device is registered. Many brands are compatible! See pics. Buttons are firm enough where you do not have to press super hard to get a response.

Broke right after the warranty expired.

I had this remote for a little over a year. I first used it with the 3rd gen ATV remote, later switching it to the 4th gen ATV.

The left part of the remote has a broken plastic lock that won't allow the 2 parts to click and stay together.

Not worth the price and the lifespan. Don't bother.

    Buy this now!!

    Best Apple TV accessory ever.

Bought two of these, one for my 4th gen Apple TV and one for my 3rd gen in the basement. Does exactly what it says it does. I’ve got all 8 buttons programmed on my home theater setup upstairs. I’ve got it programmed to turn on my TV, turn my amp on and select the output I have Apple TV assigned to, turn the volume up and down. I’ve also got another button programmed to select the DVR output from my amp and the last two buttons programmed to change the channel up or down on my DVR remote.

You can also charge your 4th gen remote with Sideclick, a lot of thought definitely went into this. It makes the Apple remote easier to hold and harder to lose as well, huge plus.

Looks like they also have one for Roku and Amazon Fire TV, if I ever buy a Roku or Amazon Fire TV I'll for sure be getting a Sideclick for those as well.

This little device is a game changer. It protects your Apple TV remote if dropped. Especially helpful if you have hard floors. Replacement remotes are expensive. Also, I programmed it to control the volume on my audio receiver so I can keep that other remote tucked in the drawer.

    Eh, it's okay..

I had seen reviews for this remote and everybody seemed to make it seem like this attachment was going to change my experience with my TV. I didn't really love my experience with it all that much. I ended up removing it from my Apple TV remote a few months ago after having it connected for quite some time. Some of the things I didn't like about this attachment were how bulky it made my Apple TV remote. It added unneeded weight to my remote. It also made it awkward when you were handling it. I felt like it fell out of my hands more often then not. I don't think I'd recommend this. However, this was my experience and others probably love the additional functionality it adds to their TV's, but for me, I'm going to pass on using this going forward.

    I think it works

I wish i could give a more complete review. The box reads that it works for Soundbars. So, I bought it to connect with a Samsung Soundbar that I was given. What I can say about the item is it does seem to have codes to connect to almost any tv model and disc player. For some reason, even though the box reads soundbars, there are zero codes in the massive manual for Soundbars or Audio. I only messed with it for around an hour. After some digging online, there seems to be a code that can be used, but I didnt have any luck. This could be due to me not knowing what I am doing though. The pairing steps are a bit silly and its hard to even guess if you're doing it right, so Ive never gotten a chance to use it. This could be because of my own stupidity, but I havent had this issue before. If you are buying for a TV or Disk player, you should have better luck than I did since those are the only codes provided I guess, the only positive experience I've had was that it DOES come with batteries, so... theres that. Yah know? I'll give it 3 stars instead of zero because Im sure it CAN work on certain items. A zero rating from me would be a bit unfair.

    Great Universal Remote

Purchased this for my older model garage TV that I got for free but with no remote. After having memorized the buttons On the TV and pretending it was the early 80’s for a few months, I decided that I needed a remote. This fit my needs perfectly, easy set up, thin, lightweight, lights up and most importantly, it works with the TV controls, all the menu and input items as well as the volume and stations! The only downside is sometimes I pick it up and it is upside down so I have to flip over to push the buttons...

I was given a TV that I hooked up my Shield to and wanted to use this attachment to control said TV. Unfortunately, this device isn't programmable via remote codes. It can only be programmed by directly copying infrared signals from the remotes it is going to replace, meaning you need to have the working remote in the first place just to use this. Not cool. pretty good but not worth the cost

I have had my share of universal remotes, from infra red to almost every model of Logitech. Most of them have issues. Some much more than others. This remote is a good one, but here are the negatives. Way too expensive. You cannot control or change it on a computer or otherwise. Must have the geek squad to come in and via computer they have things fixed, changed, added through their division. So you cannot re sync it or do anything on your own.The screen is way to small, so if u need glasses and don't wear them, forget seeing anything on the screen..When the antenna device included goes red, u can forget about the remote working.Sometimes u need to change its location.

Solved the problems I was having with prior remote

I have had this remote for a short time however it seems to have resolved the issues I was having with the prior remote with the signal being received/recognized by the components. The set up process is somewhat lengthy and required the Geek squad to come out to my home twice in order to complete the set up which is why I rated ease of set up as a 2. The instruction booklet does not provide adequate information on the functions of the remote so I have been learning by trial and error. However, that being said, I am pleased with how the remote has performed thus far. As to its durability time will tell although it appears to be well made and durable.

My previous remote broke due to it's rechargeable battery freezing up. It was made by a company that went out of business since I purchased it about four yrs ago. This remote works on AA batteries; hence never needs to be charged. If batteries die, just replace them. Even with daily use, battery life seems to be easily several months or more. No need to remember to leave in charger. Remote works flawlessly.

    Very powerful and efficient.

The remote does what it is designed to do. I wish there was an instructional training video. The instruction given earlier today was excellent (thorough, approachable instructor, understandable, intuitive to my requests AND built upon them), but I am concerned that due to expected time away from the remote I will forget some of the instruction.

I wish the screen was larger to permit better viewing. I wish there was background button lighting to permit use in a dim lit room. However, it is wonderful to see the screen of our television and not have numerous electronic equipment about the room. To turn on other equipment from anywhere in the house blows my mind. Thank you for such an innovative remote.

Great for a range of ages

We have more than one generation watching TV, so we needed a remote that was easy to use. This one has clear prompts, so everyone is comfortable with it. And it movies fairly smoothly between inputs, which has been an issue in the past. The one challenge is that it has to be programmed by Best Buy, so if you add a component or need a custom setting, you have to go back to them. For us, it's been well worth this trade-off.

IR only but a great supplement

You're limited to TVs that use only IR. Some TVs like mine use Bluetooth for all the functions besides power and volume, which the chromecast remote works fine with. So try and look up compatability first. I mainly wanted this to control the TV source but it didn't work on my TV

    Fewer remotes!

If this is compatible with your setup so you don’t need to help your TV remote around. Works best with older TVs that use IR only or see if your TV can get in to IR mode.

    Nice add on

Adds a lot of features to the remote. Also make it very easy to orient the device - simplifying the use of the remote's buttons.
