    It was well worth it

This SSD was well worth it I've gotten one for my Xbox One X and I'm getting one for my PlayStation 4 Pro. I don't know about anyone else but not only did I get better load times. But I am getting better graphics and performance especially with textures as well as some other stuff. Now I'm not saying it's all next gen enhanced but it is definitely different. I noticed this from playing cyberpunk 2077 on internal HHD and switched to playing it on SSD. I did the same thing with Assassin's Creed Valhalla. Definitely seems to unlock a little extra console potential.. when it comes to games get you a good SSD it changes everything. I honestly don't see the need to even get the new generation consoles right now with an SSD an late last gen consoles..

Samsung T5 at Best Buy: Great external backup!

Best reviews. Trusted brand name. Great quality. Fast backups. Bought this to make a backup. Plugged it in and it did the rest. Upgraded OS from Yosemite to BigSur (skipped everything in between; what an improvement). A keystroke and all my files and photos were back in place. Clean install. It’s now like a new computer. I didn’t need the one terabyte external drive because I’m only using 100 megabytes and have 1.1 terabytes free space on my internal hard drive; however, still I’m glad I decided on the one terabyte Samsung T5.

So far it’s perfect, I’m using it with my Mac to store end edit video files, so that the Mac is not full right away. I even tried a few 4K videos and haven’t noticed any performance issues.

    Perfect Storage Solution

I’m using this for my Xbox One X and find that it significantly improves load times and texture pop-in on Forza Horiza 4 and Call of Duty Cold War.

Word of advice: Be cautious when using the back USB port. I found that the back ventilation warms up the USB port. I’ve moved it to the front USB and problem solved. SSD can warm up so standing it up would be ideal for long gaming.

    Diminutive "Mighty" Drive

Originally I was skeptical about this diminutive drive. I needed a small "Big" drive to download field data from non connected systems where wifi and cell signal don't reach.

It is perfect for a cramped backpack!

It's shorter than the SanDisk 1TB drive but slightly wider and thicker.

    Faster time machine backups

Purchased for backups for a mac mini after looking at all the reviews on wire cutter. Made sure to format it for time machine with Mac OS extended (journaled) and GUID portion map scheme. It works great and is so much faster than my old drive. With my older model, was happy to see that the adapter cord for USB was included. Like the small LED light on it so I know when backups are occurring.

    Fast external NVMe drive

This drive is seriously fast. I read the reviews, and when I received it and tested it, did not disappoint. I am running apps and games from this thing with no hiccups or anything. Regular USB flash drives tested anywhere from 2-30mb/40mb read/write speed, this thing clocked at 960/1000mb read/write speed—it honestly maxed out my USB-C port, have not tested on the rated 2000/2000 read write bus speed yet (I need a new computer!)

    Fast. Really Fast.

Admittedly the games for XBox these days are just beyond huge, rivaling and sometimes surpassing the size of their PC equivalents, so it's easy to find yourself running out of storage but not wanting to remove a game just to install something new. This is a concern because most external drives of any reasonable size are slow and with the performance one expects from the XBox, it's hard to live up to that performance with an external drive that's anything other than SSD with USB 3.2 Gen 2 performance.

Enter the WD_BLACK 1TB external USB-C drive. This really is the solution to running out of disk space but not wanting to remove some games to install others. In terms of packaging and looks, it's actually very very small, due to the fact that it is an nVME SSD on the inside so it's smaller than even all standard SSDs. It comes with a vertical stand which is really personal preference on whether you want to use it. I've included a picture of it next to a standard Blu-Ray case to show the size.

The performance from the drive is phenomenal. I connected it to my PC just for benchmarking purposes and it consistently reaches very near the advertised performance numbers, mine topping out right around 893MB/s. Included is a screenshot of expected performance numbers. It's really quite good for an external drive.

In terms of gaming performance, I connected it to my XBox One S and loaded it up with Plants vs Zombies Battle for Neighborville which, to me, has always had somewhat of an obscene load time. I can tell you that this drive is at least equal in terms of loading and performance with the onboard drive in a real-world type scenario. In timing the loading of the game the difference was negligible as to not even be able really see the difference of the external vs internal drive.

Really this is the solution to an undersized Xbox drive and not wanting to constantly reinstall games, particularly with the size of the installs and downloads these days. I strongly recommend this to anyone in the market for an external drive.

Fast, Solid Expansion for Series X/S

Right out of the box, the drive is ready to use. I'm connecting to a Xbox Series X console, and once plugged in using the included USB cable, the Xbox recognized the drive and asks if you want to use it for game data, or media data (like pictures, songs, etc.) I'm using mine for game data, so after one click of the button, the drive was ready to use.

The drive has a very minimal footprint, super small compared to standard non-NVME external drives of the same storage capacity. The speed of the drive is outstanding, I was able to move/copy/save game data of multiple GBs from my internal drive to the WD drive and back again at blazing fast transfer speeds.

One thing you need to understand, is that you cannot play Series X games directly from this drive. The Series X will only "Play" games from its internal drive or from the official Xbox expansion drives that use the same architecture. A drive like this is perfect for storing your apps or older games. You can also play your older games directly from this drive, and in some cases I find the performance is actually better. I was playing Mortal Kombat XL and NASCAR Heat 5 directly from this drive, and I found the load up and wait times were shorter compared to playing directly from the internal drive. I also found that running apps directly from this drive seem to do the same, shorter load times, so bonus!!!

    As expected, solid!

I have used this brands portable SSDs before so my expectation was high for the console version. I was hoping it didnt take a long time to set up or format, and it didnt. It comes with all attachments youd expect such as USB-C to USB cord which goes from SSD to console. It even comes with a little stand that snaps into place and allows the drive to showcased. All in all if you have, or have not used a SSD before, this unit is one that is very intuitive to set up and use. Worth picking up!

Great External Storage for your XBox

WD is pushing hard into the external USB storage gaming market, especially for consoles since games are so big nowadays, typically 50GB but up to 100GB for some titles.

Even though you have 800GB-1TB of fast NVME storage, that's still not enough if you have a decent game library or have a few games you play frequently along with a few you are just playing through.

Enter the ability to add affordable, yet still faster than download speed storage devices like the WD Black D30.

There are some limitations on what games you can play off of the external storage device, it seems like most XBox Series S/X optimized titles cannot be played directly from the external D30, but XBox One titles an be. This is most likely due to the way these next-gen consoles architect gameplay around the extremely fast storage subsystems and the ability to seamlessly stream content and assets.

In terms of performance and compatibility, I actually hooked up the D30 to my PC laptop as well just to verify the speeds and also compare against some other storage methods I have access to.

The internal m.2 NVME SSD of the Dell XPS obviously blew away the externals at 2.8GB/s but that was to be expected. The D30 came in just as advertised at 900MB/s Seq. Read/Write speeds. It also stacked up favorably to the more expensive WD Black P50 which came in around 1000MB/s Read/Write, albeit part of this is due to the fact my laptop does not have the USB 3.2 2x2 required to get the full 2000MB/s advertised speeds.

Also of note, this D30 drive can also be used with the PS5 and seems identical to the unbranded version of the D30, other than the XBox branding as well as a trial key for XBox Game Pass Ultimate, the only downside is you need to format the drive to work with the PS5 while the XBox and PC are interchangeable without having to format.

In terms of build quality, the D30 is light and rugged feeling but slightly bulkier in width compared to the P50, which is metal, heavier and more premium feeling. Still, for the difference in price I would probably go for the D30 in 2TB over the faster P50 in 1TB if I had to choose. 2TB of fast SSD storage means you can quickly shuttle your primary games over to your XBox's primary storage and move them back when you're not playing, and you've nearly tripled your total storage in the meantime.

Overall you can't go wrong with this fast method of storage and while you can get an HDD version from WD with a LOT more storage space, you're not going to get as much performance or copy speeds to/from the spinning HDD platform.

The fastest external drive I've tried for Series X

The Xbox Series X has easily become my go to console, having owned every generation of hardware produced and being an Xbox Live member is day one. I say this, because my constant gripe has always been the amount of storage space available for content on each system. With GamePass, it’s now easier than ever to fill up the 1TB of internal space on the Series X and using external mechanical drives to transfer games isn’t quick.

So, when WD launched the new external D30 Solid State Drive, I was eager to try it over my previous P10 5TB external WD Black drive (which you can also buy at Best Buy). In the box, you’ll find the D30 SSD, a clip on stand, the USB C to A cable, and the warranty/manual. The drive was plug and play, immediately being recognized by my Xbox when plugged into the Super Speed port on the rear of the console. Once you’ve formatted the drive (which took seconds), it was ready to begin taking data from my internal drive.

The first thing I did was move over my copy of Call of Duty MW, a game I continue to play even as Cold War has come out. It’s a large installation on my internal drive (around 200 GB), but moving the game from my internal drive to my SSD took only a handful of minutes, as opposed to 30 min with my mechanical HDD. Some add on files transferred so quickly, they went from queue to transferred, to disappearing from the queue list on the Xbox in a matter of a few seconds. Load times on CoD also improved over the mechanical HDD that I used previously, which is why it ended up on the internal drive in the first place. Load times are nearly non-existent with this drive, and while not being as fast as the internal SSD, they’re more than fast enough to load the older content.

The included stand isn’t required, but nicely compliments the look of the casing. It has this tough aggressive look and feel to it, while weighing next to nothing. The LED on the case pulses softly when data transfer is happening, otherwise off when idle. It’s only bright enough to be seen and understood without screaming into your eyes in a dark room. If you don’t need this for your Xbox, you can also connect this to a PC or Mac and format the drive for super transfer speeds.

Will this play optimized Series X/S games directly, no. What it will do, is give you another 1Tb of fast storage, allowing you to very quickly free up space on the internal drive, while preserving a copy of your game; thus avoiding another download. Otherwise, you can use this external drive for your Xbox One or Backwards compatible games for fast load times; especially compared to your Xbox One or an external mechanical HDD.

Portable and easy to set up

Out of the box - well made and solid. I was impressed with the size and how portability of the drive and not to mention that it is a 1TB SSD.

I have the XBOX version - the set up was easy however when in use there was some lag but I would not say it would be a deal breaker. The price for an external 1TB SSD from WD is reasonable and this drive looks really cool.

Overall, its a cool set up and look for a gaming station. Portable and well made. The speed can be better for an SSD and if you are not concerned with look you can go with something thinner and faster. This is the reason for 4 stars.

    Doubled my storage!

The timing in getting this drive couldn't be more perfect. I already had an Xbox One X and was just able to get my hands on a Series X. So my plan was to copy most of what I had on the One X, then just leave it connected to the Series X, essentially doubling the storage capacity.

Upon first hooking it up to the One X, it had a little trouble being recognized. I don't know if maybe I had a dusty usb port or what, but I had to unplug and replug the drive a couple times and into a different usb port before it recognized what it was and gave me the option to format it for Xbox.

At that point is was quick and easy. Being new the formatting took seconds. Then from there I went through my games and apps and picked out everything I wanted to move. This was so much faster than re-downloading them on the Series X. One of these games was Forza Horizon 4, taking up 77.3 GB of space. I timed the transfer and it took just under 24 minutes to copy it to this drive.

With everything copied over from the One X, it was time to setup my new Series X and then plug the drive in. The Series X recognized it first time and it worked right away. I was able to play the games I copied over from the One X directly from the drive on the Series X, no need to transfer them over.

One thing I noticed though when playing a game or app from the drive is that you first get a pop-up saying the Xbox is getting it ready to play and may take a minute. It's really more of an annoyance though since by the time you can react to it, the game is ready. I'm not sure the cause of it but it only pops up when I'm playing something stored on this drive.

Also, it seems to always be powered on. Even when my xbox is turned off (i keep it in energy saving mode versus the always ready mode), the green light on the drive slowly flashes.

The flashing light and the look of it doesn't really matter much though. Since this is devoted to full time use with my Series X I just tuck it in the back so that you don't even really see it.

Overall this is a great drive. It's fast, works as its supposed to, is cheaper than other options and literally doubles the storage of the Series X, which desperately needs it seeing as how large some of the games are like Forza and Flight Simulator. And as a bonus, it comes with a code for 1 month of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, and it's not just for first time users. I previously had Game Pass Ultimate since it first came out (and regular Game Pass before that), but just had to cancel it the other month to cut down on expenses. I put the enclosed code in and it gave me a full month.

    Speed Worth Your Time

    --- SETUP ---

The WD Black SSD drive for Xbox is quick to install but requires formatting prior to your first use. After turning on your Xbox, it will ask you if you want to use it for: media storage or for Xbox games. Choose Xbox Games and you’ll be set in about 1 minute or less.

    --- FEATURES ---

This SSD features 10 Gbps for quick transfer of large files, a USB-C interface, 1 TB of storage, fast load times, and a mini-dock. It includes one month of Xbox Game Pass

    --- EXPECTATIONS ---

    - Saves Xbox Series X/S games but you can’t play them from the WD SSD drive.

    - Saves Xbox One X games and provides faster load times.

    - Can transfer games very fast from SSD to Xbox Internal storage.

    --- PERFORMANCE ---

You can install Xbox Series X/S games, but they can’t be played off of the WD SSD drive. Only games installed on the Xbox Series X/S internal storage or in an official Xbox expansion card can play Series X/S games. The load times will be faster than using an external HDD, but not as fast as the internal Xbox storage. You also won’t get the benefits of optimized games Fallout 4 which now support 120 FPS. That being said, it is still great to have this external NVMe SSD storage because the Xbox’s internal storage is also NVMe. This means that the transfer speed between the two is amazingly fast. I was able to transfer 20 gigs of data (Vampyr game) in 2 minutes and 40 seconds. I set this SSD as my default installation for new downloads. This way, I can download or preload games that will be released soon and I can transfer them back and forth as needed. If you have fast internet speed, your game will download faster because it will be installed to the drive at a faster rate.

Another great and undersold feature of this device is that, once formatted for Xbox, you can use it on any Xbox that you encounter. As a recent example, my friends invited us to game night at his house. He has an Xbox but doesn’t own the games I do, like all 7 Jack Box Party Pack games. Instead of carrying my Xbox or redownloading all 7 games to his, I just took the WD SSD and plugged it in his Xbox. We were ready to play faster than having to download the games. Essentially, this is now my travel companion for game nights.

    --- VALUE ---

For the storage, speed, and portability, this is a great get.

    --- APPROVAL ---

If you transfer games back and forth from your Xbox’s internal storage to an external one, it would be best to do it with this SSD which will improve your transfer speeds dramatically. If you plan to take your game to several Xbox’s, this is a mostly hassle-free solution.

    EXCELLENT - FAST SSD

The SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD V2 is SanDisk’s newest model of small, portable, high-capacity Solid State Drives (SSD), with a notable improvement in data transfer speed capabilities over its predecessor the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD V1. SanDisk and its parent company since 2016, Western Digital have long been a highly respected and popular manufacturer of computer storage including hard disk drives, flash memory products and SSD devices. I rely on Western Digital and SanDisk for many of my own storage products because they have always proven to be very reliable products with excellent performance. SanDisk has cultivated an outstanding reputation for their flash memory cards and drives and for their solid state drives. The new Extreme Portable SSD V2 excels in several important ways!

The Extreme Portable V2 is available in 500 GB, 1 TB and 2 TB models. The black enclosure appears to be constructed of non-metallic composite which is clad on five sides by a silicone rubber material which from appearances should prove to be both rugged and durable. This is a mostly sealed device which is IP 55 rated for dust and water resistance. The IP 55 rating does not certify that a device is waterproof or submersible. An IP 55 rating indicates that a device is protected from limited dust ingress and from low pressure water jets. The USB-C port does not have a sealing cover however. The dimensions of the Extreme Portable V2 are 4 7/8” in length x 2” in width” x 7/16” in thickness. It is both light weight, and compact.

Portable SSDs are extraordinarily convenient and useful for many purposes. Video content producers find them to be essential. Given their large capacity and high data transfer rates they are ideal for those purposes as well as data backup and storage, and notably, for use as a portable file store when using multiple computers, and particularly when travelling away from home or primary workplace.

The SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD V2 is generally well suited to working when away from a primary computer. When travelling “light”, the SanDisk Extreme SSD is a good accompaniment to an extremely portable 13.3” Chromebook, as long as the SanDisk Extreme is not utilizing password protection / data encryption security with the included, SanDisk Security Software. That compact, lightweight pair obviously can’t run AutoCAD, but they easily accommodate working with Microsoft Office files, Adobe Acrobat files and other functionality not requiring hauling around a large, heavy and powerful laptop. However, if SanDisk Security Software is utilized, only Windows and Mac OS computers are supported.

Most users will probably choose to utilize password protection and data encryption, and therein lie additional minor nuisance issues that I encountered, beyond the inability to utilize the SanDisk Security protected SSD with a Chromebook.

The SanDIsk Security Software installation exe file for Windows computers and a zip file for Macs is located on the drive. The SanDisk Security Software installs on a host computer via that executable file on the SSD. The installed software is required in order to create, change or remove password protection and AES 256 Bit encryption on the SanDisk Extreme Portable V2 SSD. Unlocking the SSD can be accomplished with the SanDisk Security software application. However, the SanDisk Security software is not required to unlock the SSD. The SSD can also be unlocked on any Windows or Mac computer, without the SanDisk Security Software, via the SanDisk Drive Unlock Utility, which creates a Virtual CD Drive on the attached computer. Unfortunately, neither the SanDisk Security Software application, nor the SanDisk Unlock Utility work with Chrome OS.

The SanDisk Security Software offers the option to “Auto-Unlock”, on an attached computer with the full SanDisk Security Software installed. A convenient option, but antithetical to maximum access restriction security for the data on the SSD.

When using the SanDisk Security Software I found that the time for the mounted SSD to be recognized by the Security Software averaged approximately 33 – 41 seconds. After entering the password, there was an average wait of approximately 8 – 10 seconds for the SSD to unlock. This period of roughly 50 seconds seems like a long delay when you are attempting to access your files. I am compelled to remark that when utilizing a competitor’s 1 TB SSD, which similarly provides AES 256 Bit encryption and password protection, and also includes a biometric security feature, that drive is recognized immediately, and unlocks instantly.

Furnished in the box with the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD V2 is one, 6” USB 3.2 Gen 2 cable, terminated at both ends with USB Type C connectors. Also included, is a USB Type C to USB Type A adaptor. A 6” USB cable is absurdly short and is an impediment. Additionally, the small adaptor may easily be misplaced. Another SSD that I own included two, 17.5” long USB cables (both a USB Type-A to USB Type-C cable and a USB Type-C to USB Type-C cable). The SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD should have two cables of decent, practical length, as well. There is a printed SSD Safety and Warranty Guide included, which includes a URL (http://www.downloads.sandisk.com/downloads/um/ssd-install-guide.pdf) for downloading the PDF User Manual from the SanDisk website. Unfortunately, the URL printed in the guide is non-functional, and I could not locate a User Manual for this model anywhere on the SanDisk Support site. Perhaps the User Manual should have been included on the SSD.

While exploring the SanDisk Support site, I downloaded and installed the SanDisk Dashboard, Version 3.1.2.5.. I was disappointed to discover that the SanDisk Dashboard software did not interact properly with this SSD. It did not display Drive Health, Temperature or S.M.A.R.T. passthrough data, etc. Nor did the diagnostics work with this SSD. Perhaps you will have better results with the Dashboard application; I ultimately uninstalled it.

The SanDisk Extreme SSD is preformatted in exFAT, with 512 byte sector size. There is no visual indicator for drive activity or power on the SanDisk Extreme SSD. I believe that an LED power / drive activity annunciator would be beneficial.

The high transfer rate specifications for the SanDisk Extreme SSD V2 are a very impressive 1050 Mbps for Sequential Reads and 1000 Mbps for Sequential Writes. Those fast data transfer rates are attributable to the PCIe (Peripheral Component Interconnect Express) bus, NVMe (Non-Volatile Memory Express) memory and USB 3.2 Gen2 connectivity. However, those data transfer rates are only achievable when the host computer is similarly equipped with USB 3.2 Gen2 ports. (The SanDisk Extreme PRO model SSD is rated at 2000 Mbps transfer speeds). My test speeds were limited by the USB 3.0 ports on both of the laptops available for testing. USB 3.0, data transfer rates were measured with Crystal DiskMark 7.0 at 458 Mb/s Sequential Reads and 449 MB/s Sequential Writes. Nevertheless, based on anecdotal observation, the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD V2 was extremely fast. Very large file transfers were very fast. Data transfer rates did not appear to be affected at all by AES 256 Bit software encryption.

The SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD V2 does become palpably warm when attached to a computer, even when idle, and generates heat in proportion to activity when it is actively in use. Large data transfers generate a lot of heat. I would presume that SanDisk employs a single layer PCM (Phase Change Material) to somewhat mitigate the heat generated by use (presumably encapsulated paraffin wax). Nevertheless, the SanDisk Extreme SSD runs hot, and perhaps it may retain heat, rather than dissipate it effectively, as a consequence of the silicone rubber cladding which is likely insulative.

Overall, the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD V2 is a very good portable SSD. It offers large capacity and very fast data transfer rates. The IP 55 rating is a valuable asset for portable SSD drives particularly when travelling. SanDisk provides a five year warranty on the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD V2, which certainly bests the typical three year warranties. The SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD V2 is certainly worthy of consideration and I am comfortable recommending it!

    A rugged, super fast solution!

If you're anything like me you've learned that SSD is the way to go on a PC, especially when it comes to PC games. Once you've used an SSD then you will never want to go back to a regular old mechanical hard drive. So the idea of installing internal SSD drives are likely something many of you have already done, much like myself. However, there comes a time when you really need a portable SSD drive on the go and that is where the Sandisk Extreme drive comes into play.

Receiving this drive it looks a little larger than one would expect but it definitely seems very, very rugged and my guess is it would be able to withstand a good bit of playing rough by dropping it before there would be any sort of real issue. It just seems like it is a very tough case that it is in and offers me real peace of mind for taking it on the go on the occasion when I travel for work.

The drive comes already formatted and setup and ready to go. All you do is plug it in and begin using it. If you don't have a USB-C port there is an adapter included to use the old style USB-C port but realize you are losing a lot of your speed. Once you get it up and going the only real software on it is Sandisk security for encrypting the drive contents, which I chose not to use since I have nothing of a confidential nature on my drive.

Moving on to actual use: now I am no professional video game player or content creator but one thing I do like to do is play PC games and stream, albeit just so that my friends can join in to see what I'm playing. And this drive has done an amazing job in keeping up with streaming to the drive both in real time and for saving it for later use.

I've been using the drive on and off now for playing and streaming games and it seems like it's super fast, I've never noticed any slowdown in any regards and it's been reliable as ever. I think this is a great drive for gamers and professional content creators and streamers, especially for those who are on the go at times and want something really rugged that can stand up to being moved alot. I applaud Sandisk for this product and happily give it a five star rating. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Portable, Lightning Fast NVMe performance … to GO!

    Bottom Line Up Front:

    =========================================================

SanDisk delivers another yet another high performing, rock solid storage solution – only now it’s completely “pocketable” and faster than ever. If your looking for a semi-rugged, take anywhere, ultra-fast portable storage then the SanDisk Extreme Pro should definitely be on your list – HOWEVER, even with IP55 dust/water/shock – RESISTANCE… I don’t think this bad boy is as “rugged” as it may initially appear (if that that happens to be your primary point of consideration).

    Unboxing, Styling & Functionality:

    =========================================================

The Sandisk Extreme 1TB External NVMe drive comes with everything you need to start transferring/saving/moving your files and content right out the box. The drive is backed by a nice 5 year manufacturer’s warranty. Seeing as how the Extreme NVMe drive is a USB-C device, SanDisk is kind enough to throw in a female USB-C to male USB-A (read old school “square” shaped) adapter in the box in addition to the single mandatory USB-C cable. I was a little disappointed in the “length” of the included USB-C cable, and I estimate its about 6-8inches in length – way to short in my eyes. If you plan on connecting this to a traditional tower or taller PC/device it will be potentially “dangling” by the cable -however if you use a laptop or have a top case mounted USB-C/USB-A port you should be fine. I can’t help but feel this is one of those areas where a little more thought could have been placed by SanDisk to better suit a wider swath consumer devices – even if I have to pay a dollar or two more to get a little more cable length as a result.

As soon as you hold the SanDisk Extreme in your hand though, it just feels so cool – literally…I guess that in large part due to the soft touch silicone/rubberized coating that wraps around almost three quarters of the device. Only the topside facing portion of the drive is made of what feels like dimpled/textured plastic. The drive has a decent sized carabiner loop on the upper right side of the device, and only has a single female USB-C port along the lower right corner. The whole unit feels light, yet satisfyingly “well built” at the same time to me. Sadly, I worry that as nice as the rubberized surface may appear, I have experienced significant wear on surface like this from other devices in the past. Its only been a few days of regular use, but I do worry about the long-term physical “appearance” over repeated travel and uses outdoors or on less than “ideal surface/environments. Additionally, it is for those reasons that I wouldn’t want to actually “clip” this device on anything… or anything “onto it” – since I fear it will only wear/scratch/rub the coating off as well. As I just said – so far so good, but only time will tell.

    Performance & Usage:

    ===================================================

The Sandisk Extreme has performed flawlessly in all my file, image, and project transfers so far. I work with large Virtual Machine files/images in addition to very large image files for web/photo design and development and I have to say that the SanDisk Extreme 1TB was a welcomed step-up from my current traditional 1TB/2TB “Platter” USB hard drive setup I use to move around stuff from various workstations and personal machines. From a professional standpoint – I was impressed how much performance increased the NVMe technology has increased file transfer speed and reduced file write times. The Extreme 1TB literally cut my transfer times by around 40% to 50% and that adds up when your transferring RAW image files or 20 Gigabyte VM files upwards of 40 times a day.

I did note how WARM (borderline HOT) the Extreme 1TB can become – particularly on large file transfers – and interestingly stays mildly warm while plugged into a USB port. I can’t help but wonder what a little more metal or heatsink consideration could be taken into place -because I know for some people this may be a weak/sticking point – especially if your using it ina “rugged” outdoors setting, in hotter climates, during the peak of the warmer seasons. It does make for a nice hand warmer in a cold server room though! Even on my large 20+ Gigabyte transfer files (as you can see in my photos) I was still getting a respectable 400MB+ write speed, so to me that’s great!

While using it to transfer smaller batches of not professional grade images and documents at home for personal “fun” use – I think the SanDisk excels more than anyplace else. It is formatted as a exFAT – obviously…so that it can be “compatible” with a wider range of consumer Operating Systems and devices – but if you’re working on Windows machines AND looking for more performance AND have a mind for enhanced security/file permission/system administration (like I do) – I suggest you format the drive for NTFS before you start to use it.

Interestingly, and unsurprisingly – the USB-C female port has mange to build a small amount of lint and “crud” from being traveled with in my Day-to-Day activities. I am not the most gentle with my portable drive – to be fair – so I can’t say that there is anything inherently bad about the Extreme 1TB design – other than potential cosmetic material durability concerns. While IP55 certification covers most accidental water accidents, this does not mean you can submerge the drive, or expect to survive a dip in the pool/lake/river either. As nice as the Carabiner look – I find myself a little perplexed to its inclusion for actual outdoors style activities. Especially because that USB port has no cover as I previously mentioned – yes I know the device is mostly “sealed” and as I previously stated has IP55 dust/shock/water resistance – but call me old school – and that doesn’t mean your USB cables and device ports are necessarily certified that level either.

    Closing thoughts:

    ===================================================

I found it interesting that the device has no plug or dust cover for the USB-C port on the drive itself. I can’t help but think as “rugged” or “portable” as the device is – that relatively inexpensive rubber/silicone dust cover would go a long way in preventing the amount “crud” and/or pocket lint that ends up inevitably building up inside the female end of the internal port …particularly after being placed in a bag or pocket. I really like the way the Extreme 1TB feels and “looks” in my hand or w I Just worry it won’t “look” that way for long after a few months of being tossed in my photography bag, my gym bag, my pocket (along with my keys), my backpack ..you get the drift. While the “heat” generated by the NVMe drive may be mildly off putting – its been my experience that most NVMe drives get warm under usage. It would be nice if SanDisk maybe could a little more thermal consideration into the design (perhaps a metal top plate instead of plastic). Regardless, SanDisk stands behind their products with a 5-year warranty and I personally never had a SanDisk drive fail on me without cause.

The SanDisk Extreme 1TB has knocked it out of the park where it counts most in my book – performance. Its faster and lighter and takes up way less space than my older traditional USB platter disk drives (you can see a photo of my older drives with a Nomad Case for comparison). The Extreme has convinced me its time to upgrade the rest of my older portable USB drives so that I can travel lighter, and spend less time waiting for things to get done – be that for work, or just documents and image manipulation at home. I find myself now doing more in less time – even if it is not as “rugged” as I though it should be.

    Best SSD drive I've used!

I 1000% recommend this hard drive. I am a wedding photographer so the security of my raw images is my top priority. I have used LaCie, Western Digital passports and other external hard drives and have had 3 drives fail on me before. I have never had a problem with these Sandisk's. They are small, durable and fairly quick for editing on the go. I will always use SSD from here on out and these drives are my go-tos! I have three of these and will probably be ordering another one soon lol.

    This is perfect for Windows to Go installations;

This SSD is blazing fast and when it's on sale, it's a great deal. Using for Windows 11 To Go USB, which can be booted on any Windows or MacBook that allows external boot USBs.

If they put that 2TB on sale ... I need it.

    Small but mighty

This external SSD is a must-have! It's easy to use and super fast to transfer/retrieve pictures and videos within seconds. I had an old external hard drive and it took forever to backup/transfer data. Also, you don't have to worry about losing your data since there are mechanical parts. Plus, it comes with a USB-C cable and a USB-C to USB-A adaptor.

    Seems to work

I'm sure I don't know what I'm doing, but it took several hours to back up my computer the first time. We will see if it takes less time the next time. My other problem is more with my computer. I have a MacBook and it only has 1 port. My battery got down to almost nothing before this finished the backup. Otherwise, I will never know if this really works well until I need to restore my computer or buy a new computer.

Brought it home, plugged it in and immediately started using it - no setup/installation hassles. Seems very rugged - it sits on top of my tower pc without sliding around. I'm not worried if it falls off (yet) since it'll only hit the rubberized casing surrounding the device. Only time will tell how reliable and rugged it is; I'm trusting the brand here.

Great alternative to more iCloud storage!

I wanted to keep all my photos and videos but not use up all my computer storage and didn’t want to pay for iCloud forever so I bought this. Best thing ever! Now I record as many moments as I want cause I know I have the space fore it. I use it to back up my MacBook Pro at the same time. So when I think it’s time to back up the whole computer, done or when I just want to add extra photos Of important files to a safe place its done

    Reliable and super-portable

Takes the reliability and power of G-technology and puts it into the slimmest possible container. Hard to believe it holds a full 1TB considering its size, which is about half the thickness and weight of its competitors.

Western Digital Drive for Half the Cost!

This drive is a wonderful value for anyone who wants a high-quality Western Digital drive without the high price tag to match. It comes with two USB cables (USB-C to USB-C and USB-C to USB) in the box and feels solid and well constructed. I have used this in a dual partition with my Mac and Surface Laptop 3 and and it works flawlessly! Highly recomend.

Great SSD for gaming with good loads.

WD made a very reliable and solid SSD. The drive performs very well with loading up games and data at a fantastic speed. D30 works with a decent amount of devices that gives you 1TB of storage. It works with the PS4, PS5 (PS4 games only), Xbox, and PC. So far for PC games, it does the job it needs to. Played a ton of games from Steam and Epic game store on the device.

The SSD is nicely designed but nothing too special. It gives a rugged vibe to its design and seems to take falls pretty well. D30 does have a "gamer" look to it but it's also portable where you can just slip it into a laptop bag and go. Comes with a USB-C to Type-A cable but I'm using USB-C to USB-C on the device. I was just happy that I could just whip this around from device to device with ease. it also comes with a Stand to prop it up next to your gaming device.

What is more to say? it does everything it advertises to do and with ease. everything just worked fine, games loaded up rapidly, Plug and Play. WD BLACK D30 is just a great drive and a brand I'll buy from now on.

    It’s all about space

Simply put, I was tired of deleting games and then adding back on later. Never thought I would need more internal storage. It’s fast when transferring back and forth. If you have PS4 games, you can play those on the storage which most of us have. I’m using this on my PS5. I learned that with PS5 games, you can only store and/or transfer to and from the internal. You cannot play PS5 games on it.

If your tired of deleting games, this storage is for you.

    Not a Black drive

WD has a performance Black high end drives that has generally great reviews. So riding on the praise of the Black NVMe is this drive clinging to the Black brand. No. This drive contains a WD Blue NVMe, the older WD SN500. A cheaper, but still respectable, NVMe drive that performs up to 1/2 what a true Black drive can. While I do love the Blues as an inexpensive option in my builds, it's sad they they use the Black branding on a device that has no Black drive in it. Keep that in mind if you purchase this.

I got the D30 to mainly use on my Xbox One S. Coping about 100GB of games (all two games, lol) took about 20 or so minutes - I had to walk away during the copy. Load time was faster, but I forgot to time the load time off the internal HD so I compare. Having extra space in a small form factor is a nice feature for my Xbox.

Now, you can use the D30 on a PC, but you can't swap back and forth without formatting. On a PC I only tested with the stock cable as I couldn't find my C to C 3.2 cable. Peak read was 462 read with 440 write. Even the random tests were respectable. Overall, this is a great external drive for everyday use or gaming. I do wish the case were smaller to take advantage of the NVMe's size.

WD is building a history of deception as bad as cellphones use the word "unlimited." First was the relabeling of Green drives as Blue and having the ridiculous high load count and slower platters. Recently, selling SMR drives in their Red NAS drives instead of CMR which gives reduced reliability in a server environment. I wish they'd clean up their act and get back to what made them a good company. Because of the shady practices, this drive only passes as average, but I'd still recommend it as long as the buyer knows they're not getting a Black drive.

    Finally A PS5 Storage Solution

Being one of the lucky people to find a PS5 last year was a double edged sword: I had the hottest new console on the market but I had slightly less than 700GB of drive space. Now while there aren’t many PS5 games available it still plays all the PS4 backlog I’m working through or that my kids refuse to move away from. Being able to trial run a WD Black 1TB Gaming SSD was a possible solution but I’d heard that some external drives don’t run as well as the internal or worse the PS5 locks up if you use them. I’m ecstatic to report that isn’t the case with WD Black!

First, the drive size is really small, about half the size of my Galaxy phone. Second, it comes packed with a stand to clip onto it so it will sit upright along the long edge instead of just flopping over wherever the cord lets it go. Finally, and best of all, the drive performs as well as the internal drive with my PS4 games. I transferred all 500GB of my stored games to the WD drive which took a while but I don’t think it was more than an hour (I forgot to check the clock when I started but its not bad! Certainly not PS3 transfer speeds thank goodness!). Once they’re loaded up they perform fast and flawless no matter if they were digital only games or digital versions of your standard disc games (Skyrim, Lego Marvel Heroes, Last of Us 2, etc.). I put them in sleep/standby mode and woke the system the next morning and jumped right back where I left off without lag or freezing! Its amazing and makes me super happy!

Setup is simple, just plug the drive into the base and the cord into the drive, set it near your console (it’s a standard 12 inch cable so it’s gotta be close), and plug the drive into the BACKSIDE of the console (no fighting over the front port for charging your controller, extra awesome!). Once plugged in it should prompt you or you can navigate and format the drive for PS5 storage format then you’re good to go! Super easy, barely an inconvenience!!! There’s not much else to say besides that its function is awesome and it looks even cooler with the rugged looking plastic shell (its not drop proof, you can feel its just a cool shell not actual protection).

Hightly recommend, if you have a new system then you NEED this drive to keep space for all your games.

    Realiable speed!

With the increase in the size of the new video games, the gaming consoles' storage capacity remains at 1TB, such as the new Xbox series X and PS5. So the only option that remains is to download one or two games to play, and when completed, I have to delete and download another. Personally, I'm not too fond of this solution because I often like to go back to my old games to play. In such cases, extended storage is the practical solution. This WD Black D30 1TB is a definitive remedy to the storage capacity issue since the high graphics games are taking much space. WD SSD D30 size is compact and looks excellent and sits in place "thank you for the base." My experience has gone smooth and flawless. First, I hooked it up to my PS5 using the front USB-A, and once connected, I got the message of a need to format the SSD drive to use it as external storage. Next, I moved one pre-installed game from internal to external storage, and the transfer rate was significant fast, and 57 GB of game size was completely transferred in 8-10 minutes. However, I reversed the process by moving the game back from my WD SSD to PS5 internal storage, and here the transfer time was cut down to 5 minutes. Another attempt is to hook up my WD D30 to my Xbox series X using the front USB-A, but the first attempt did not go so well as the SSD drive was shown as media storage only. Then I noticed the USB cable was not securely plugged into the Xbox USB-A port, which tells me if the USB is not plugged in completely, then the SSD drive shows media storage only. Once the cable is connected, the pop-up screen has shown up, and I went to settings/ system/storage and saw the new external storage listed right below the internal. I went ahead and installed a new game (Valhalla) on the WD SSD drive; after 10-14 minutes, the download was complete, but the game did not load up, so I installed it again on my internal, and the game worked just fine. I thought about moving another game just to give it a try because if this SSD is only to store games on it, then to me, it is useless; I moved Tom Clancy's The Division 2, and Voila! It worked immediately, and I was amazed that the game loaded up from the external drive and was smooth and with no lags. My conclusion was that certain games could be installed and played directly from this WD SSD, and others can only be stored, and whenever I need to play them, I just move them to the internal storage as the time of moving them is shorter than redownloading them again—excellent and reliable speed.

Optimized for Xbox Series X|S games WON'T play

It’s clear that disc based media is quickly becoming extinct, particularly with respect to console and PC gaming.

Solid State drive technology is light years faster than its platter-based HDD predecessor, however SSD drive space is severely limited in the lower price regions, while being insanely expensive once you get above 4 TB, or 8 TB.

The new generation of video game consoles only offer 1 TB internal storage, while graphic intensive games now routinely clock in at 50 GB to 100 GB or more. While it’s not too much of a problem to delete a game and just re-download it later over high-speed internet, certain ISP broadband providers have implemented data cap (1.2 TB / month on Comcast for example).

It is for this reason that this product category exists and is thriving in fact based on these being back ordered at the time of this writing.

My intention for the WD Black D30 was to avoid having to delete my Forza and other games from the Xbox Series X internal drive, and install the new MSFS Flight Simulator 2020 on the WD. Unfortunately I was notified that games optimized for Series X must still run from the internal drive. The 102 GB game (before 35 GB updates) did transfer quickly from external to internal, though I did have to shuttle games off the internal defeating the purpose. This is more cumbersome than planned.

By contrast Seagate offers a 1 TB extension card (for about $50 more) that is designed to use the dedicated expansion port on the back of the console, instead of a USB port. This allows the drive to be an invisible extension of the internal drive, which will then run next gen titles optimized for Series X.

    PROS

    + compact size

    + super fast speed

    + solid state storage

    CONS

    -does NOT “extend” drive storage

-must be formatted for either Xbox or PS5

-must still move Optimized titles to internal drive

    CONCLUSION

While this 1 TB SSD drive is very fast (like all solid-state), it DOES NOT allow you to play Optimized for Xbox games. Seagate’s 1 TB expansion card costs more but is a better option with less manual intervention. On the flip side, Samsung T5 and T7 external SSDs are less expensive at the 1 TB size, or slightly more for double the external storage (though would still require shuttling games between drives)

    Not recommended buy

    Easy set up

It felt like a plug and play to my PlayStation.

I’ve had one before and decided to upgrade.

1TB is a perfect size since I’m not a serious gamer but I’m don’t buy actual disc games and this storage is perfect for all the games I purchase and save. Easy to navigate.

The actual size is very small and bulky so I feel comfortable traveling with it. Overall great addition to my PlayStation setup

Easy to use and works great.

This drive is very easy to use and I was up and running in minutes. To use it you simply plug it into the PS5, go to settings and storage and you'll see it available as USB Extended Storage. Once formatted you can default it to always install PS4 games to the USB Extended storage where they can stay while you play them. For PS5 games, as the product description explains, they can only be stored and not played while on this drive. The process to copy the games over from the PS5 is simple and just as simple and fast to copy them back. The convenience on a PS5 game then is it frees up storage when you aren't going to be playing the game for an extended period and then allows you to quickly copy the game back to the PS5 when you do want to play. The process to copy the game back to the PS5 is much quicker than another long installation of the game.

Overall the drive works exactly as explained and is easy to use while more than doubling the amount of space you have to store games on your PS5.

A must have for someone running out of room on their PS5.

    Good Price! Amazing quality!

Price was good and product was identical to actual product with cables and ssd drive (no Samsung box!). No issue. Test speed just like the benchmark online and it totally solved my problem with my XBOX One X which was really slow on some games such as Cyberpunk 2077. Also, most of the enclosures and other drives keep getting disconnected with Xbox One (and One X) but this one literally no disconnection even when it goes to sleep. Cannot be happier with this product and also paid less because it was a certified refurbished.

    Great for Xbox

I learned about the benefits of an SSD for an Xbox and decided I needed one. I'd just bought Battlefield V which is a huge game and has some long load times. So according to Google and hard-core gaming nerds an SSD will significantly reduce game load times and make games run smoother. I don't own a lot of games so I don't need much space. Just enough for a few games I'm currently playing. I wanted a type C cord to go with my phone so I went this route. I didn't do any tests or clock the load speeds. I did get Forza 4 and ran it a few times off the console's hard drive before transferring it to the SSD. Wow, definitely a huge improvement when loading the main menus! The size is perfect too. I live in hotels 85% of the year and this fits perfectly in my Xbox's card case.

Refurbished T5 Samsung 500GB External SSD Drive

Initially, when I first plugged in my new refurb'd drive my computer didn't see it and I thought that I had a defective unit. After further online investigation I found that often with a new external drive you have to get into the computers disc management system and assign the new drive a letter designation, Example - D:, once this is accomplished the new drive functions perfectly every time I plug it in. It is a nice little SSD drive with lots of available space for mass storage. I am certainly not a computer ops nerd but was able to figure this out quite quickly. I recommend this drive to all that need extra storage space to back up your documents!

SLOW - okay for small file transfer home use

I needed a USB A and C flash drive and this was on sale.

    Build Quality:

The pictures make it look attractive. However, the plastic shell and release buttons on the sides feel really fragile. I guarantee you drop this it'll crack. For office and little use its fine, but if you'll be traveling a lot with it and use it constantly not sure how it'll hold up

The mechanism can sometimes be a struggle to push in\out the USB A or C connectors.

    Performance:

PNY listed this as 150MB/s read speeds. I get close to those speeds at about 120MB/s. However the Write speeds is incredibly slow at only 15MB/s if i'm lucky.

    Overall:

If you are transferring small files, using it at home, and need USB A\C -- for the sale price under $15 it's fine. But if you want speed and better quality, then spend a little more for the.

I went with the Samsung DUO second time around - a little more expensive, but it's double Read Speed and 3 times faster write speed. Samsung DUO also has a better built.

This is a very mediocre flash drive. The sequential read speed is as advertised, 13MB/s. The write is okay, at around 37MB/s.

Its neat that it has USB C since that is the future and macs only have taht now, Android phones also have C so it can work with smartphones in a pinch. same with some new iPads.

    Great SSD, Poor Cable Condition

I bought this SSD as a Geek Squad refurbished product. The USB Type C to C cable gave me problems right away when plugging it into my 2017 MacBook Pro. It would give me different results no matter what end of the cable I was plugging in. The blue light indicator on the SSD would be blinking when it was working properly but it would usually either turn solid blue and not be detected by the computer or it would not turn on at all. The cable would also come out slightly if I was moving my MacBook for a more comfortable position and this would mark an error for not ejecting properly (this can cause file problems). The other cable that came with this was the USB Type C to A which worked fine but I needed to use my adapter (a.k.a dongle) which isn’t very convenient. I wish I made this review sooner or made a request for a new cable but my loss can be your gain. Check everything and don’t settle for something that works half the time.

The external SSD is compact in size and transferring video files to it happened extremely quickly. The videos were on my iPad Pro, and I used the included USB-C cable for the file transfer. The unit itself feels sturdy; I'm sure it'd survive a small drop.

Port is not USB-C (it's type-B, with adapter)

I bought this because I was looking for a drive with a USB-C port. That is the port on 2018 and later Macs. This drive says it's USB-C, but all that means is that it comes with a USB-C adapter for the

    Type-B cable.

USB-C provides faster transfer rates than earlier USB standards. Since this drive's port is Type-B, I assume I'm not getting those rates. The drive is fine, but don't pay a premium for faster transfers, because you won't get them.

    Does its job.

Does its job and was extremely cheap when I purchased on sale. It isn’t really a USB-C hard drive though so shouldn’t be advertised as such. It is a regular USB 3.0 device that ships with an adapter. Meaning speeds aren’t anything special.

    Support is sorely lacking

This device apparently is working as intended, the best I can tell. Files and folders are showing as backed up, either by dragging and dropping or automatically. But instructions and user guides are sparse, and technical support is nowhere near adequate. I have emailed several questions to Seagate several times, and have had only a couple of questions clearly answered. The instructions for one problem — an error message saying that I needed to “unmount the drive and proceed with the security request” — were to reinstall the software. I tried that, and it didn’t work. I still don’t know exactly what that error message means, and why it reoccurs. In our last email exchange, the support rep said to let him know if I needed a “call back” for more help. I replied that I would like that, and provided a phone number. I’ve heard nothing since then. If I had known how confusing this product would be to use, and how little support there would be, I would not have bought it. Although it appears to be working, I can’t be sure if it is working as it should.

Does the job but has a couple annoying quirks

The unit arrived quickly (I was not in a hurry and there's a pandemic but lo and behold it arrived quickly). The design is nice, sleek, and you get what you need. I have run it once and it does what it is supposed to do. This review covers my work with the unit in DEC 2020/JAN 2021. And I'm writing this on 2/13/21.

There are 2 minor things I do not like about it. 1. You have to go online and download the software. It is minor but it's another step. Other units come with the software on the device, saving me a few precious minutes. No big deal, just letting you know what to expect. 2. On my Lenovo Yoga 2 laptop, which is about 7 years old, running Win 10.... always the latest..... the software windows do not fit my screen. So I cannot see the options to make the selection to "ok" or "Cancel". I know I can hit "enter" and that should work (and it did) to run the backup. But that's pretty annoying. The solution from Seagate was to uninstall and then re-install the software. I haven't done that yet. The irony is that you cannot resize the window yourself the way you can with "normal" software systems. You cannot highlight/click/drag the edges or corners. And my laptop is a touch screen and with other applications I can also resize the view by "pinching" the screen (or track pad) - this does not work on the Seagate software. Clearly the software engineers engineered that option right out of this product. Sigh. I'll keep it but when it comes time for the next backup external drive, I'll look to something else.

Works as expected and WD honors warranty

I bought this to replace a pair of 6TB drives that I had been manually keeping synced. Seemed better to have a mirrored drive and more space at the same time. Now I have one cable and one power supply. I haven't had this unit long enough to truly rate it.

However, this is my 2nd one of these. I bought one a year previously. I use this first one as my media drive. After 10 months it reported that one of the drives had failed. As a mirrored unit, it continued to work with no loss of data. But I had no clue which drive had failed. The WD Drive Utility would not tell me and WD Support told me it was supposed to, After too much time on the phone with the helpful Support person, he decided I should return the drive. I backed it up, shipped it to WD, and received a "new" refurbished one in return. I give these drives a good rating since I lost no data and WD honored their warranty. I also like that the WD Drive Utility provides so much more information that you can normally get for an external drive on with MacOS.

Best external drive, speed and usability...

I can not say enough. I bought this drive and am very happy. It performs very well and without issue. The speed is comparable to having the drives internal to my pc. Never have I found that. I get the same speed regardless of the connector or cable I have used. It is roughly 200MB/s. The USB hub feature works great. Just remember to have the main drive recognized before you connect your external drives. The software, everything is top notch. Came with two RED NAS drives with the 256MB cache made in Thailand. It is a newer RAID software so it did not accept a WD RAID built in another WD device. That was not expected.

    Great external hard drive

It's an external hard drive and does what it is supposed too. This is my 3rd one and it works great. The first two where of the older design.

The first thing I did was change the configuration to RAID 0 so I have 8TB mirrored instead of 16TB striped. This gives me data protection without having to run a separate data backup process.

Data transfer is fast and they have been very reliable. They are on 24X7 and I have not had any issues since purchase a couple years ago.

    Great Backup Drive

I bought this as a backup drive. When it is formatted in RAID 1, there is about 7.5TB of space. For me that is plenty. In terms of value, most people will want to stick to a lower capacity version unless they absolutely need all of the space.

    Lotta storage

Works well once going, but after reboot of the computer, the drive is not reconized by the system until I unplug the drive from power, wait awhile, and power it up again after the computer is fully booted up first. Does not work to just unplug usb cable and an plug back in. Drive itself has to be restarted to work. Not a huge thing for me since my computer is mostly running all the time. Otherwise, works well once recognized. A ton of storage space.

    Not too bad.

It works just fine. The setup process took a bit longer than I expected. It doesn't come with a booklet and you have to go online to follow the setup process. With the MAC it worked out, i just think the setup steps should be more clear.

The RAID system simplified my backups!

After years of dealing with multiple external hard drives to back up 7 TB of data (plus, more hard drives to backup my backup), I love the RAID system!

    1) My Book duo gives me the storage capacity I need with fewer cords and less required plugin space than multiple external hard drives.

    2) The ability to set up a "mirror" effect so the second hard drive automatically backups the first hard drive is pure genius, thanks to the RAID system.

    3) If one hard drive dies, I can remove it and install a new drive.

    4) Plus, this system seems to transfer data faster than the 8TB or 10TB external drives I used in the past.

Great 2TB External SSD at an Excellent Price!

I've been using an external SSD drive as my main macOS boot drive on my 2018 Mac mini for a few years now. Unfortunately a few weeks ago, the drive I had been using failed (Google "Samsung T7 leaking" - it's crazy!). I needed a replacement ASAP and there was no way I was going to give Samsung any more of my business. I've always been a fan of Crucial's memory products and had never heard anything bad about their SSDs so I decided to give them a shot.

Luckily the 2TB Crucial X8 happened to be on sale for a ridiculously low price and Best Buy had it delivered the very next day! While the specs are similar to the Samsung T7 drive it replaced, I am finding that the transfer speeds on the Crucial X8 are slightly faster. Overall, I am very happy with this purchase.

    Gamers must have!

So I am running an Xbox Series X and S and even with the storage expansion cards, I was filling up space fast so I decided to get an external SSD this time around to save money and too also have another form of storage to backlog games. I was fortunate to take advantage of the 2TB sale that was going on at the time and got my hands on one. I am so so pleased with how fast the transfers are to and from this SSD! If you are looking for alternative storage as I was, I can’t recommend this enough, especially if you can get the 2TB

I just got a bad drive. It happens.

    I got a dud, I guess

Wouldn't stay connected in Windows via either USB-A adapter or USB-C. Returned it.

Crucial X8 is a great external SSD!

Absolutely great performance for the price. I’ve never had an issue with products from Crucial, and in my experience, their products only continue to get better. To be fair Western Digital makes great products too and their products are usually faster, but Crucial always hits that sweet spot for price and performance and that is great for all consumers.

LARGE CAPACITY - SMALL SIZE - FAST SSD

The Crucial X6 4TB USB External Solid State Drive (SSD) is a new model in the Crucial X6 product series with an enormous 4TB capacity, a compact and lightweight profile and a claim of up to 800 MB/s sequential read speeds. The other available capacities offered for the Crucial X6 are 1TB and 2TB models which claim sequential read speeds of up to 540 MB/s. Presumably, the significant difference in speed is predominantly, if not exclusively attributable to the difference in controller/bus technology. The 1TB and 2TB models are known to be SATA drives, while the new 4TB version is evidently PCIe/NVMe. The faster PCIe/NVMe technology is also available in the Crucial X8 SSD series, which also claims faster speeds. This important information pertaining to utilization of PCIe/NVMe technology in the X6 SSD is not published by Crucial in any of the marketing literature, nor is it listed on the Crucial website, including the Support page.

Crucial, whose parent company is Micron, is a well-established and well-respected manufacturer of flash memory and SSD consumer products. I have purchased Crucial memory for several PCs through the years, and the factory installed SSD in one of my Dell laptops is a Crucial SSD .

The Crucial X6 case is manufactured of black plastic, with rounded-over edges all around. Although the only apparent opening for potential admittance of dust or liquid is the single USB-C connector, the device does not carry an IP rating as a sealed device. Crucial claims that the X6 SSD has been drop tested to 6.5’ on a carpeted floor, but there is no listing of testing certifications or standards in support of that claim. The dimensions of the Crucial X6 are approximately 2-20/32” (67mm) x 2-1/2” (64mm) x 3/8” (8mm) thick at the edges. The Crucial X6 weighs only 1.4 oz (41g). It is both lightweight and compact.

Furnished in the box with the Crucial X6 “Special Edition” is an almost 9-1/2” cable terminated with USB-C connectors on both ends and a USB-C to USB-A adaptor. The multi-language printed insert which is also included provides nothing more than the terms of the Crucial Warranty, and the Crucial website URL for support. The Crucial X6 carries a three (3) year warranty, however some other Crucial products carry a five year warranty.

Portable SSDs are extraordinarily convenient and useful for many purposes. Video content producers and photographers find them to be essential. Given their large capacity and high data transfer rates they are ideal for those purposes as well as data backup and storage, and notably, for use as a portable file store when using multiple computers, and particularly when travelling away from home or primary workplace.

The Crucial X6 is generally well-suited to working when away from a primary computer. When travelling “light”, the Crucial X6 is a good accompaniment to an extremely portable 13.3” Chromebook. That compact, lightweight pair obviously can’t run AutoCAD, but they easily accommodate working with Microsoft Office files, Adobe Acrobat files and other functionality not requiring hauling around a large, heavy and powerful laptop. Of course, even when travelling with a Windows laptop, the Crucial X6 SSD is an excellent choice for an external SSD to tether to the laptop. It is extremely useful to be able to “take it all”, and 4TB of capacity is a substantial amount of storage.

An important aspect of the selection criteria for portable drives can be data security. The potential for compromised or exposed sensitive or private data, through loss or theft of the drive may be an important consideration, particularly when travelling. Unfortunately, the Crucial X6 does not offer any physical security, such as a biometric fingerprint reader, nor is there any hardware or software based data encryption included with the drive.

The Crucial X6 is preformatted in exFAT, which is appropriate for both Windows PCs, Chromebooks, Macs and many gaming systems. It can easily be quick-formatted to NTFS if desired.

Crucial has a very useful drive management application named Storage Executive, which is available for download from the Crucial website for use on Windows 64 BIT systems, only. Unfortunately Storage Executive does not recognize the newer 4TB model of the X6 drive. Crucial represents that it currently recognizes the older, 1TB and 2TB versions, and the X8 drives.

There is no visual indicator for drive activity or power on the Crucial X6 SSD. I believe that an LED drive activity lamp would be a nice feature.

The high transfer rate specifications for the Crucial X6 4TB SSD are an impressive 800 MB/s for Sequential Reads, however no specification is provided for Sequential Write speeds. Notably other large capacity PCIe/NVMe based SSDs, including the Crucial X8 2TB portable SSD as well as portable SSDs from Samsung, SanDisk and others are rated for 1050 MB/s Sequential Reads and 1000 MB/s Sequential Wrties. The Crucial Support representative with whom I spoke declined to address the roughly 20% difference in specifications. Fast SSD data transfer rates are attributable to the PCIe (Peripheral Component Interconnect Express) bus, NVMe (Non-Volatile Memory Express) memory and USB 3.2 Gen2 connectivity. However, those high data transfer rates are only achievable when the host computer is similarly equipped with USB 3.2 Gen2 (10 Gb/s) interface. My test speeds were limited by the USB 3.0 ports on both of the laptops available for testing. USB 3.0, data transfer rates were measured with Crystal DiskMark 7.0 at 449 Mb/s Sequential Reads and 435 Mb/s Sequential Writes. Those speeds were only about 1% - 3% below what I measured for the faster Samsung and San Disk drives utilizing the identical test platform. Nevertheless, based on anecdotal observation, the Crucial X6 4TB SSD is very fast. Of course there are even faster SSD drives available, notably those models which are rated for up to 2000 MB/s speeds.

The Crucial X6 does become warm when attached to a computer, and generates heat in proportion to activity when it is actively in use. Large data transfers generate palpable, but not uncomfortable or alarming levels of heat. Typically, this type of drive employs a layer of PCM (Phase Change Material) to somewhat mitigate the heat generated by active use (presumably encapsulated paraffin wax).

Overall, the Crucial X6 4TB SSD is excellent. It offers large capacity, fast data transfer rates and a compact and lightweight profile. I find it to be an excellent drive for photography and videography. The Crucial X6 4TB SSD is certainly worthy of consideration and I am comfortable recommending it!

Format SSD before using to get fast transfer rates

*Reformat your drive with NTFS or exFAT using the Default allocation size prior to using* I got very disappointing transfer rates before I reformatted it.

Pro: Compact 4TB Fast SSD Storage! I easily got 500MB/s+ write speeds for large files, and ~100MB/s for smaller files (4-5MB photos) Much faster than 4TB Rotating disk external drives. The included cable is convenient for both USB-A and C

Cons: The drive format out of the box is complete garbage. I was only getting 5-10MB/s transfer rates for small photos and was about to return the drive. The transfer rates for photos were slower than a rotating drive out of the box. After I reformatted with NTFS or exFAT using the default allocation size, the write speeds approached those expected of an SSD.

so much space for a little thing

first impression after seeing the box was, wow this a small product, and then you open it and see how small this crucial X6 really is, i was impressed how compact this SSD the device is 4TB it has this matted black finished and its very simple, you have the name at the front and another name at the back that also listed with 4TB markings. the packaging is very simple it comes with USB C cord thats a bout 4 inc, and an extra USB C to USB A incase your computer doesnt support USB C.

4TB is huge space, crucial mention that you can upload up to 20,000 photos, 100 hrs of videos it will be awhile before i could even test those, mainly using this SSD to transfer my games from my PC hardrive. at the front of the box they also mention that reading speed of X6 is up to 800MB and they from my test its pretty close which is amazing. going back on how small this SSD its so compact that if youre the type of person who travels alot id make sure to keep your eye on this little monster, its small and light enough for to lose it, be very careful, but wow im just impressed on how much technology have changed, comparing this to my older HDD 2TB the size difference in size is massive. the other great thing about this the X6 is that you can also use it for your gaming consoles, PS5 does have USB C so you wouldn't technically need the extra adapter they provide, but if you have Xbox consoles, it doesn't have USB C, which mean you'll need the USB C to USB A that Crucial provided in the box. i have notice loading speed on my console games after using X6, from transferring game files to loading a game there's definitely a difference

i highly recommend X6 i think its a great small device that can offer up to 4TB with an amazing speed, couldnt think a single negative thing to say about this product, it does what it say it can do and the extra USB C to USB A adapter thats included in the box which would make this a solid 5 star, Crucial didnt have to provide that but they did it anyway. thank you Crucial, satisfied customer here.

    Small but Mighty

Let’s start with the most obvious - and this is likely going to echo many other reviews - but this thing is incredibly compact. It’s hard to believe 4TB of data can actually fir into such a small form factor. This is going to be the first thing anyone who owns one of these notices as they open the package, and by far the most surprising aspect for myself. I was actually afraid I might lose this due to its size. This easily fits just about anywhere.

To go along with the small size - this portable storage drive is astonishingly light. So much so that I had concerns surrounding the durability. However, the build quality is solid and those concerns were quickly alleviated. To be honest though, due to the compact size and extreme lightness, I find myself being cautious in my handling of the device - which isn’t a bad thing.

In my review I am not running speed tests and giving you all the “technical numbers”. If you want those you can certainly find other reviews and even visit Crucial’s site. My review looks at this from a practical, everyday user standpoint.

In the box you will find the SSD, USB-C cable, and a one page information sheet. You can order a USB-C to USB-A adapter but it is not included as part of the standard packaging.

I was supposed to receive the USB-C to USB-A adapter, however that never arrived. So all of my use and testing has been done utilizing the USB-C to USB-C connection.

I used and tested this SSD on the following devices:

    + iPad Pro 12.9 (2020) running iPadOS 14.5.1

    + MacBook Air

    + Dell Inspiron 27” i7 w/ 12GB RAM running Windows 10

Connecting to each device was seamless. No issues or concerns. The SSD was recognized with each device right away.

Writing to the SSD was rather quick, even with large single files and multiple files. Not having used a Crucial SSD before, I was not sure what to expect. I was very pleasantly surprised on all three platforms. A 146.8MB transfer which included multiple high-resolution photos and 4K 60fps video clips taken from iPhone 12 Pro was completed in mere seconds. A standard HD full length movie (65m duration) uploaded in right at one minute. Now I’m sure you may find drives that are faster, or reviewers who could nit pick at some technical level jumbo jumbo. As I said earlier - this is a real world user review. So let me just say, uploads are fast - pleasingly fast.

What about read speeds? Again, no technical jargon here. Everything I uploaded - files, photos, movies, programs - all uploaded perfectly, quickly and were able to be used just as fast. Was it identical to the read speeds on my device’s onboard SSDs? Not quite - but close. I could pick out the smallest of delays when reading from the Crucial SSD versus my device drives. But that is NOT to say it lagged or was clunky. Opening and closing multiple file types and quickly moving between those files was just as impressive as the upload speeds to the device.

Switching the Crucial SSD between devices showed no issues.

I really can’t find anything to be unhappy about with the Crucial SSD. You get a TON of storage in a very compact form factor, portability, solid build quality, excellent read / write speeds, excellent device compatibility - including gaming consoles. What more does the everyday user want to need? This is an excellent external SSD with a lot to like.

I would absolutely recommend this device to anyone.

    Very Small, Not so fast

When I unboxed the X6, I was really impressed by the diminutive size. It is undoubtedly the smallest 4tb external drive I currently own. It's tiny size makes it great for traveling with a large video library for entertainment, and still leaves plenty of room for photo transfers and work. The drive has a smooth service that makes it easy to drop. A rubber band fixes that issue, but Crucial should consider a more rubberized or rougher surface. A corner lanyard loop wouldn't go amiss either. A device this small is going to be easy to lose.

I transferred numerous video files of varying size on this drive and never came close to the advertised 800mb per sec maximum data transfer rate. The maximum read rate was listed at 800mb per sec, and my average read rate was 18mb over 3 different video files transferred multiple times. I'm sure text files transfer much faster, but those were my results with videos. I think this device is perfect for travel, but it's not as fast as expected.

No PW protection as promised & no padding in box

This SSD does not come with password protection. Before I made the purchase I contacted Seagate and they told me it indeed comes with PW protection. Upon receiving it, there was no PW protection. I contacted Seagate again and they apologized for the bad info. We worked out a deal and I got a Lacie with PW protection. One more thing, Best Buy packaged this with no padding in the box. It arrived at my doorstep and rattled around in the large box. What's up with that? Hard drives should be packaged with padding!
